Syracuse (9-4) vs Virginia (10-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange were phenomenal in the suffocating 78-60 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday. They were great from the field, didn’t allow much from three, and dominate from the start. This is the right team with the right style to hang with Virginia.

The Cavaliers might have a better offense this year than people think, but they’re all about not making mistakes, and Syracuse forces a ton of them. You have to be able to pass well to hang with the Cavaliers, and no one in the ACC moves it around better than the Orange.

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers struggled to put away Georgia Tech in a 64-62 win on Saturday, but that’s an aberration. The Cavaliers have been winning easily over the last month with the defense forcing a ton of mistakes, the outside shooting a constant, and the team doesn’t miss free throws – it hasn’t missed more than two in any of the last four games.

Syracuse might be built for Virginia, but few teams are built better for the Syracuse pressure than Virginia. It’s more than happy with bogging down, and it’s not going to panic if the shots aren’t falling right away.

The Orange lives off the pressure and takeaways, and Virginia doesn’t turn the ball over.

What’s Going To Happen

These two programs always seem to slug it out. Even when they went to overtime – like they did late last season – they still only managed to combine for 118 points.

Both hit their free throws, both can rebound, and both play terrific defense. However, Syracuse’s defense faltered in its last two road games – both losses – and Virginia will make amends for the tough fight against Georgia Tech with a better overall performance guarding from the outside.

Georgia Tech hit its threes to make it a game. Syracuse isn’t going to be as sharp.

Virginia (9-2) vs Georgia Tech (7-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

It’s one of the better teams in the country when it comes to turnover margin and taking the ball away. The defensive pressure generates a whole lot of points – the Yellow Jackets lead the ACC in scoring – and they like to get on the move.

That’s not Virginia.

It’s not not like the Cavaliers don’t score, but they still what they do so well. Part of that involves playing great defense and not making a whole lot of mistakes, but Georgia Tech can crank up the offense enough to bust the Cavaliers out of their style …

Maybe, because …

Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia always gets tagged with the boring-offensive-team thing, but it cranked it up over the last two games with a whole lot of threes in wins over Notre Dame and Clemson.

The Cavaliers might not crank up a whole lot of shots from the outside on a regular basis, but they hit well over half of them in three of their last four games. As always, they don’t turn the ball over, they don’t give up cheap fouls, and no one moves the ball around better to come up with easy shots.

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Tech is playing well enough to come up with the upset if it three are falling right away – it made up for a whole slew of problems in the win over Clemson by hitting just about everything from the outside – but Virginia isn’t going to give up enough easy points to pull it off.

The pre-spring version of the CFN 2021 rankings with a first look at all the ACC teams.

[jwplayer GOXHcfXn]

2021 ACC Rankings: Pre-Spring

ACC Atlantic Division

1. Clemson Tigers

Why To Be Happy: At the moment, the defense gets all 11 starters back after leading the ACC in total and scoring D. This was a young group up front, and now all the stars return. Linebackers James Skalski and Baylon Spector announced they’re returning for another year, corner Derion Kendrick is back, and on and on and on. Oh yeah … the offense did this last year without a few key receivers who’ll be back.

What To Work On: Turnovers were a bit of a problem – especially fumbling – and the running game wasn’t its normal killer self. Travis Etienne is done, but the veteran O line has to be better at pounding away.

Bottom Line: It’s Clemson. It lost a transcendent NFL QB prospect in Trevor Lawrence, the most productive ACC running back ever in Etienne, and it’s going to be even better.

2. NC State Wolfpack

Why To Be Happy: The defense loses the main man Asim McNeill from the middle of the line, but everyone else of note appears to be back. Throw in a few key transfers – especially at safety – and the Pack should be nasty on that side of the ball.

What To Work On: Most of the offensive skill parts are back – helped by the return of leading receiver Emeka Emezie – but the production has to come. The O was fine, but it wasn’t explosive enough and there were too many turnovers.

Bottom Line: NC State was great at beating the teams it was supposed to, and the experience will be there to repeat the decent level of success of 2020, but big-time playmakers have to emerge.

3. Boston College Eagles

Why To Be Happy: It was a strong first season under head coach Jeff Hafley, and he gets the pieces back for the offense to be even more dangerous. The backfield of QB Phil Jurkovec and RB David Bailey will be great if …

What To Work On: The running game has to start working again. It wasn’t a function of the offensive style, but with all five offensive linemen expected to return to pave the way for Bailey, there’s no excuse for being 118th in the nation in rushing again.

Bottom Line: Just about everyone returns on offense, and the defense that needs a little reworking needs to start getting behind the line more. The Eagles will be stronger.

4. Florida State Seminoles

Why To Be Happy: There needs to be a whole lot of work and a whole lot more production, but almost all of the entire starting offensive 11 from the end of last season is expected to be back. The defensive side loses several key parts, but instant help appears to be on the way from the transfer portal.

What To Work On: Yeah, the offense. The defensive side has to generate some semblance of a pass rush, but the O has to be more efficient throwing the ball and has to figure out how to move the chains.

Bottom Line: 2020 couldn’t have been any worse for head coach Mike Norvell and the national title-level program. There’s experience, there’s a reset mindset, and … there’s a lot of work to do.

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Why To Be Happy: The offense should be even more explosive and more dangerous. The offensive line returns almost intact, the receiving corps is loaded, and Sam Hartman – bowl meltdown against Wisconsin aside – is a terrific triggerman to run it all. There’s more than enough talent back on D to be fine, but …

What To Work On: Losing star end Carlos Basham matters. The pass rush was a problem for the Demon Deacons with him, and now it’s going to take a whole lot of work to get even more out of the D that has to work to hold serve.

Bottom Line: It’ll be more of the same. Dangerous, fun, explosive offense that should be able to keep up with just about everyone, but questionable defense that should have enough issues to make every game a shootout.

6. Louisville Cardinals

Why To Be Happy: The offense is going to be interesting with Georgia Southern option wizard QB Shai Werts transferring in to add another option. Expect more consistency and production from a team that should be able to keep up with just about everyone.

What To Work On: The receiving corps loses Dez Fitzpatrick and Tutu Atwell to the next level, and the linebacking corps has to replace almost all the starting linebackers along with nose tackle Jared Goldwire.

Bottom Line: Coming off a 4-7 season, the Cardinals have to bounce back quickly despite a slew of key departures compared to the rest of the Atlantic Division. Improvement on the O line and limiting the turnovers are a must.

7. Syracuse Orange

Why To Be Happy: The Orange have almost everyone back on offense and on the defensive front seven, and the arrival of Garrett Shrader from Mississippi State should help the quarterback room. The experience is there on both sides of the ball, but …

What To Work On: The secondary loses its top playmakers, and losing receiver and return man Nykeim Johnson to Kent State hurts, and … offensive line, offensive line, offensive line. The Orange have GOT to figure out how to block after not doing enough of it over the last few years.

Bottom Line: We know it’s possible for Syracuse to win – we all saw it a few years ago – but after a lost year with horrible play on both lines, the program has to get the infrastructure right.

Virginia (5-4) vs Virginia Tech (4-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Virginia Will Win

Very, very, very quietly, Virginia has been on a roll. It was a brutal first part of the season, but it got on a nice run starting with the upset over North Carolina, and has kept it all going with four straight wins.

Now it’s coming off of its most complete offensive performance of the season in the 43-32 win over Boston College – the team really is getting better as the season is going on.

And then there’s Virginia Tech – who’s trending in the opposite direction.

The Hokies struggled through health issues early on, and over the last month, the offense has collapsed, the defense is struggling way too much, and there just hasn’t been the slightest bit of luck.

Playing Clemson will make anyone look bad – the Hokies weren’t awful, but they lost 45-10 last week – as a part of a rough run. The O can’t convert on fourth downs, the D is breaking as well as bending, and the secondary had struggled. Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong is coming off of a few sharp performances.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies are still able to move the ball through all of the issues.

There are quarterback concerns after injuries – including a scary incident with Hendon Hooker last week against Clemson – and inconsistencies, and the ground game has stalled, but the passing game hasn’t been bad.

When the O is working, the ground attack is rolling. This starts with getting Khalil Herbert into open spaces and letting him rumble. It’s no coincidence that the team’s struggles kicked in when he got hurt, but now should build off the 21 carries he got last week against Clemson. However …

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

The Virginia defensive front is great at getting to the quarterback and the run D has been fantastic lately. It helps statistically to face a Boston College team that didn’t really run – along with Abilene Christian – but it was able to hold down North Carolina and only allowed over 180 yards once.

This isn’t be as good as last year’s 39-30 classic, but Virginia will pull off a second straight win in the rivalry after losing the previous 15. The Cavaliers are sharper on both sides of the ball, but it’ll be another battle.

Boston College (6-4) vs Virginia (4-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Boston College Will Win

Start throwing, keep throwing, and don’t stop throwing.

Boston College doesn’t have much of a running game – relying on QB Phil Jurkovec and a passing attack that’s not a killer, but it’s good enough to hit 200 yards in every game but the win over Georgia Tech, when the running game rolled.

Fortunately, Virginia has the ACC’s worst pass defense, allowing over 275 yards in six of the eight games. There have only been three picks since coming up with five in the opener against Duke, and it’s allowing way too many deep plays.

And when it wants to, BC can run, too – it came up with 188 last week against Louisville, and is 3-0 when it runs for 100 yards or more.

Why Virginia Will Win

Boston College isn’t getting into the backfield at all.

The program that used to be known for a whole lot of sacks and a whole bunch of big plays behind the line is last in the ACC at generating tackles for loss and doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to matter.

Virginia leads the ACC in tackles for loss allowed and has one of the best pass rushes in the nation.

Boston College might have a good passing game, but Virginia has been rock solid, too, with 200 yards or more against everyone but Miami. Unlike BC, the Cavaliers have a steady ground game, too.

CFN Experts Picks: Week 14

What’s Going To Happen

Very, very quietly, Virginia is on a three-game winning streak as it turned its season around. The Cavalier lines will play better than the Boston College lines, and more offensive balance will be enough to get out with a win.

For those who care about these sorts of pattern things, Boston College has followed up every win with a loss after starting out 2-0. It beat Louisville last week.

Virginia (4-4) vs Florida State (2-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Virginia Will Win

This whole 2020 Florida State season is going just GREAT.

The Mike Norvell era got off to a rocky start before it all began, there’s been nothing positive on the field other than a bizarre upset over North Carolina, and now it’s all taken another after the program made Dabo mad – FSU pulled out of the game last week with Clemson with COVID protocol concerns.

Meanwhile, Virginia is quiet on a three-game winning streak to turn its season around, tuning up even more with a 55-15 win over Abilene Christian last week.

The Cavalier offensive line is playing great, the pass rush is terrific, and the team does a great job of controlling the pace and tempo.

Why Florida State Will Win

Florida State might not be doing a whole lot of things right, but it’s able to control the time of possession, too.

In a game like this with little passing game and less of a defense to rely on, the Noles will be more than happy to try running the ball, letting the clock roll, and keep the score low and make the game go fast.

This isn’t an explosive Virginia team. It comes in with the ACC’s worst pass defense, no downfield passing game to worry about, and with enough of a turnover problem to give FSU several easy chances.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

FSU will keep on trying with the various young parts getting their shot, but this rough year isn’t going to get any better.

It’s not going to be anything pretty, but Virginia will come up with a workmanlike effort on both sides of the ball. It won’t make the mistakes Florida State will, and the run D will hold up a wee bit better.
