MMA Junkie’s “Gorgeous” George and John Morgan walk you through all the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings changes.

It wasn’t the most eventful weekend in MMA history, but nonetheless, UFC on ESPN+ 22 and Bellator 234 are in the books, and there were some items of note:

  • [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag] earned a victory over [autotag]Ronaldo Souza [/autotag] in the UFC light heavyweight main event in Sao Paulo. What does that mean for his spot in line hoping to meet champion Jon Jones?
  • What do you do with “Jacare” after his unsuccessful light heavyweight debut? (Spoiler alert: Continue ranking him at middleweight).
  • Over at Bellator 234, [autotag]Sergei Kharitonov[/autotag], who was an honorable mention at heavyweight, was upset by [autotag]Linton Vassell[/autotag].

What does this all mean for our weekly USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings? Let MMA Junkie’s “Gorgeous” George Garcia and John Morgan walk you through the changes in the video above.

Wisconsin (8-2) vs. Purdue (4-6) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Purdue Will Win

Throw on the Wisconsin secondary, and don’t stop.

Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez was able to hit play after play against the Badgers … but he only threw it 23 times in last week’s 37-21 loss. He was able to bomb away for 220 yards – averaging close to ten yards per throw – but he wasn’t able to connect enough.

Aidan O’Connell won’t have any issues throwing – a lot.

Thrown into the mix with Elijah Sindelar and Jack Plummer out hurt, the freshman winged it 50 times for 271 yards and two scores in the win over Northwestern two weeks ago.

He’s not much of a runner – Martinez gave the Badger D fits – but he’s got the young receivers to spread the ball around to. Wisconsin’s secondary might only give up 154 yards per game, but last year it had a solid pass D, too, and it got hit for almost 400 yards in the wild 47-44 win over the Boilermakers.

Fortunately for the Badgers last season …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Jonathan Taylor had a DAY.

The best runner after three seasons in NCAA history – passing Herschel Walker last week for career rushing yards as a junior – put the Badgers on his back last season, running 33 times for 321 yards and three scores, averaging close to ten yards per carry.

As a freshman, he rumbled for 219 yards averaging over seven yards per pop in the win over the Boilermakers.

How much is the Purdue defensive front struggling? It allowed over 250 rushing yards to Northwestern.

This isn’t a bad Boilermaker D, but the Wisconsin running game picked it back up after the debacle against Ohio State, coming up with two straight 300-yard days helped by an O line that’s playing well at just the right time.

And then there’s the matter of …

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

Wisconsin has won 13 in a row in the series and 15 of the last 17.

Purdue has been competitive over the last two years, and these two have played some classics in the not-too-distant past, but the Badgers need to win to set up a showdown with Minnesota for the Big Ten West title next week.

It’ll have problems with the Boilermaker passing attack early on, but the formula will kick in. In the final home game of the year. Wisconsin will go out doing what it does best and pound away for another 300-yard rushing day.

Tennessee (5-5) vs. Missouri (5-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Tennessee Will Win

Missouri’s offense appears to have ended its 2019 season a bit early.

It doesn’t like scoring touchdowns anymore, putting up a grand total of 27 points in the last four games with no more than seven in any of the last three.

What’s the problem? Playing Florida and Georgia was part of it, but to put it bluntly, it’s just not clicking.

Kelly Bryant was able to connect on enough throws to get over 200 yards against the Gators, but they didn’t seem to go anywhere. There’s no pop or explosion, there are too many missed opportunities, and the absent running game isn’t helping.

Tennessee’s offense isn’t going off, but the defensive line is doing a nice job of getting behind the line and being disruptive, the takeaways are coming, and overall the team seems to have found a bit of a groove over the second half of the year.

It might have lost to Alabama, but it was close to making it interesting late. That was the lone loss since early October – the team is now finding ways to win, after starting off the season creating interesting ways to lose.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Missouri Will Win

It’s Senior Day. Next week the Tigers make the trip to Arkansas, but first, the team has to bust out of its funk in the final home game of the year.

That starts with getting the passing game going and needing Bryant to get hot  right away.

Yeah, the Vols might be on a nice run, but it also helps that the D hasn’t dealt with too many teams that can throw.

It kept Alabama from going ballistic, and it came up with a win over South Carolina despite getting hit for well over 300 yards, but Kentucky, UAB and Mississippi State aren’t being mistaken for LSU offensively.

Jake Fromm was able to connect on 83% of his passes in Georgia’s easy win over the Vols. Florida’s Kyle Trask was red hot, too, in a win.

Bryant has to be patient, keep the chains moving, and just relax for a passing game that has the parts to go on marches against a Tennessee D that’s struggling on third downs.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Mizzou offensive line block anyone?

It’s not generating any semblance of a push for the ground game, and it’s not keeping Bryant and the quarterbacks clean. Unfortunately, the Tennessee pass  rush has been steadily solid.

Don’t expect the Tigers to all of a sudden get it all back.

The Vols aren’t putting up points in bunches, and in just their fourth road game of the season they’re going to struggle and sputter against an inspired Missouri defense.

First one to score wins? It won’t be quite like that, but the Tigers pull up out fo the nosedive just enough to get out with an ugly, ugly win.

Toledo (6-4) vs. Buffalo (5-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams need this, but in different ways.

Toledo has a whole lot of traffic in its way and needs a whole lot of help to win the MAC West, but there’s no shot if it doesn’t get by Buffalo and Central Michigan to close things out.

At least it’s bowl eligible already. Buffalo isn’t.

The Bulls managed to pull off a gag that rivals last year’s colossal disaster in the MAC Championship loss to Northern Illinois. They were cruising along against Kent State, collapsed in the few minutes, and lost 30-27.

Now the MAC East title hopes are done – Miami took the division – and they have to win at least one of their last two games to go bowling. They play Bowling Green next week, but they need to close this off, now.

Considering Toledo failed to show up in last week’s puzzling loss to Northern Illinois, which team will bounce back the fastest?

Buffalo has a pass rush, and Toledo doesn’t.

The UB offense will rip through a Rocket defense that’s giving up 465 yards per game thanks to a secondary that’s getting hammered by anyone who’s trying to throw.

Toledo has to run to win – it leads the MAC in rushing – but it’s going against the league’s best defensive front.

UB will play for a full four quarters this week.

Akron (0-10) vs. Miami University (6-4) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

What’s Going To Happen

How much will the RedHawks care?

Miami University has already won the MAC East title and are off to Detroit after going on a four-game winning streak and getting a little help along the way.

But before that, it has to finish out the home portion of the slate against the worst team in college football.

Just when you think Akron can’t disappoint any more, it finds a way to do it.

The offense has failed to score more than 14 points in six of its last seven games – the only time it didn’t was against a UMass team that’s probably the second-worst team in the country – and hasn’t scored more than six in five of those.

Miami ins’t anything special offensively. It doesn’t push the ball down the field, and it doesn’t have much of a running game, but the defense is dominant behind the line and the O is managing to do just enough to get by.

At home, the RedHawks will win easily, but can they make it two weeks in a row with a blowout after rocking Bowling Green 44-3?

Akron will give up the ball three times and won’t go anywhere against this MU D.

The NFL free previews and predictions for Week 12 from Winners & Whiners

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

NFL Football Free Predictions

Presented by Winners and Whiners in partnership with CFN!

In the NFL, we’re headed to Week 12 after a week that saw no major upsets, though Atlanta crushing Carolina on the road was one. Baltimore continues to roll and New England finds a way to win without an explosive offense. This week is headlined by Seattle at Philadelphia, Dallas at New England and Green Bay at San Francisco.

*Seattle is coming off a bye after playing back-to-back overtime games (both wins). They aren’t demolishing teams but they have won six of seven games. They face an Eagles squad that struggled on offense against the Patriots last week in a 17-10 home loss. They could use WR Alshon Jeffery and RB Jordan Howard, who both missed the New England game. But the extra rest and Russell Wilson will be too much for the Eagles. Take the road dog.

*Dallas has defeated one quality team in Philadelphia and that’s it. Last week, they had to hold on to beat Detroit, who is playing with Jeff Driskel as the starting quarterback. They face a New England team that can’t really run the ball and has struggled passing the ball against quality defenses. New England is just getting by right now due to an outstanding defense. Playing at home for the first time in November will help Tom Brady and company as their offense wakes up against the Cowboys. Take the home favorite.

*San Francisco has just one loss but they were fortunate to beat Arizona by 10 last week in a much tougher contest than the score indicated. The 49ers have a massive amount of injuries on the offensive side. The Packers are coming off a bye and Aaron Rodgers returns to his home base of Northern California. He’ll have a tough time against a defense that is allowing just 142.5 yards per game in the air. Take the home team.

New Mexico Falls to UTEP, 66-63

New Mexico Falls to UTEP, 66-63

Lobos lose a close one in the Don Haskins Center

Contact/Follow @MWCwire

Missed free throws throughout for New Mexico were ultimately the difference in a close one

Daryl Edwards finished with 18 points and four assists and the UTEP Miners defeated the New Mexico Lobos on Tuesday at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas, 66-63.

The Miners got out to a quick start, leading 10-1 early, while the Lobos didn’t hit their first field goal until the 12:57 mark of the first half. The first four points for New Mexico were from the foul line, which is where nearly a third of the Lobos’ scoring came.

A test for New Mexico, the Miners’ defense caused issues especially around the rim, where layups and short jumpers just weren’t falling, resulting in a season-low shooting percentage of 38.8%.

After tying things up 10-10, the game stayed close through the first half, ending with a layup by Efe Odigie to knot the game at 30 apiece. The game stayed within a single possession through much of the second half, including the final minutes of the contest.

Up 62-58, UTEP’s Jordan Lathon was called for a technical foul, sending JaQuan Lyle to the free throw line where he made both, closing the gap to 62-60. A UTEP turnover and foul against the Miners led to a split pair of free throws from JaQuan Lyle and a missed UTEP three pointer allowed for a transition dunk by New Mexico’s Zane Martin, giving the Lobos a 63-62 advantage with just 53 seconds remaining.

But Lathon quickly made up for his previous mistakes with what would be a dagger of a jumper, putting  the Miners back up by one.

A missed three-pointer by New Mexico’s Makuach Maluach followed by a foul and two made free throws by Bryson Williams secured the game for UTEP, despite JaQuan Lyle‘s made (but just a fraction of a second late) half court heave.

New Mexico will stay on the road and head to Las Cruces, New Mexico to take on an injury riddled New Mexico State, which has come out to a rocky start of the season after taking final four contender Auburn to the wire in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Notable Team Stats:

The Lobos out-rebounded the Miners by a 36-31 margin, but were far less efficient offensively than they had been to start the season, shooting ten percent or more below average in about every statistical category (free throws, three point percentage, field goal percentage).

Had New Mexico shot its season average in free throws (74.8%), it would have resulted in three more points, enough to push the game into overtime, or to have prevented the need to foul and instead to have been the team being fouled. The Lobos also posted a season low in assists, tallying only 7 assists in the game.

Although UTEP shot just over a third of the free throws the New Mexico did, the Miners made 84.6% of their freebies, compared with 64.5% mark for the Lobos. The Miners also shared the ball a little better than the Lobos, finishing with 14 assists.

Stat Stuffers:

New Mexico – JaQuan Lyle (19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) ; Carlton Bragg (10 points, 9 rebounds, 1 block)

UTEP – Daryl Edwards (18 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds)

LaVert Hill made the ultimate power move on MSU interception

The Wolverines CB could have scored on his INT, he admitted, but had an amazingly petty reason why he didn’t.

[jwplayer 852nXSj0-XNcErKyb]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It was the fourth quarter in the big rivalry game, and MSU didn’t stand a chance that late in the game. But the Spartans were going to attempt to mount what seemed to be an insurmountable comeback, down 34-10 early in the final quarter of the game.

After all, Michigan State held a 31-10 lead in the fourth quarter over Illinois the previous week and managed to let that game slip away. Why couldn’t the similar happen to the Wolverines?

But then, the dagger. Michigan cornerback and Detroit native LaVert Hill stepped in front of a Brian Lewerke pass intended for Walled Lake (MI) Western standout Cody White. And like that, it was all but over.

The celebration on the sideline for the maize and blue irked the visiting Spartans, and a bit of a scrum ensued before being broken up.

An already chippy game was getting chippier. Something bound to happen when you have a lot of native sons battling it out for intrastate supremacy.

“Yeah, it was real personal,” Hill said. “I know some of the people on the team. Just to be the champion of the state this year, it feels pretty good.”

So, why did the sideline become suddenly crowded, the Spartans’ ire drawn? Well, because it wasn’t just an interception by Hill.

After Hill got the ball in his hands, he started inwards with lots of room and blockers in front of him. But he took a step back, casually went out of bounds and flexed on White.

Even Hill admitted on Tuesday that he could have taken the INT all the way to the house. But with a big rivalry comes petty season, and Hill was intent to let the MSU wideout know who had the better of him on that play.

“I could have scored if I wouldn’t have did what I had to do, but that play is in the past right now!” Hill said. “Oh yeah – I coulda did more, but it is what it is!

“I wasn’t even thinking. Emotions out there, just having fun. That was it.”

Assuredly, petty season will continue in a week and a half, when the Wolverines host rival Ohio State for the regular season finale on Nov. 30. But first, Michigan travels to Bloomington to take on Indiana this Saturday.

Kickoff for the latter is slated for 3:30PM EST.

Why Arkansas Will Win

And thus begins the Barry Lunney era.

It’s been two weeks since the Hogs fired Chad Morris, but will that help make the offense any better?

For all of the losing, all of the embarrassment, and all of the problems, the Hogs have a decent enough secondary to make a few plays here and there, and the offensive line hasn’t been all that bad.

The ground attack ripped through WKU for 253 yards – averaging over nine yards per carry – a week after bothering Mississippi State for over seven yards per pop.

Rakeem Boyd isn’t getting enough work, but he’s been the main man with a few home runs over the last few weeks in his two 100-yard running games. On the year he’s rushed for over 100 yards four times – the first two times were in the two wins – and now he gets to go against an LSU defensive front that just got gouged.

It was against the Ole Miss offense designed by offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez – it’s able to crank out big yards in chunks from time to time – and LSU couldn’t handle it. QB John Rhys Plumlee and company ran for over 400 yards with four scores in the wild shootout.

Arkansas has to turn it loose, because …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why LSU Will Win

The Hog defense is about to be in for a very, very long day.

The Tigers can pick the way they want to get things moving. The Arkansas secondary hasn’t picked off a pass in five games and was giving up well over nine yards per throw before WKU dinked and dunked its way to a blowout win.

Joe Burrow should do his thing – just assume he’ll be connecting on at least 70% of his throws on this group – and then it’ll all be up to the running game.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire is on a run of three straight 100-yard games, averaging over six yards per pop on the season. The Arkansas defensive front cant get behind the line a little bit, but it can’t hold up against the un, allowing 265 yards or more in four of its last five games.

Kentucky ran for 330, Mississippi State ran for 460, and Auburn came close to hitting the 300-yard mark. LSU won’t have to take any big chances – it’ll be able to rip off yards in chunks.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The LSU defense that’s been getting hit hard and criticized over the last few weeks is about to show the world that it really isn’t all that bad.

Granted, it’s against a wounded Arkansas team that’s just trying to play out the year, but it’ll still matter.

The Tiger offense will effectively put this away in the first half, and then the defense will take care of the rest to clinch the SEC West.
