USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 softball rankings

Unbeaten teams half of top 10 in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Unbeaten teams comprise half of the top 10 teams in the latest USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

Texas 5A titlist Lake Creek (41-0) leads the way as the top-ranked team for a 14th week, while Roncalli (33-0) and Benton (32-0) in the next two spots also had perfect 2022 campaigns.

No. 6 Rockridge (35-0) and seventh-ranked Monroe-Woodbury (26-0) are the other two teams in the poll who did not lose a game this season. Rockridge is the first Illinois team to have back-to-back unbeaten seasons, while the New York state Class AA titlist Crusaders will look very different next year without star pitcher Brianna Roberts and potentially also her mom, head coach Penny Roberts, who is mulling whether she wants to continue leading the squad.

Utah’s Riverton (28-1) and Ohio’s Anthony Wayne (30-1) remained highly regarded despite having one blemish on their record in the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, while No. 8 Donovan Catholic (30-1) suffered its lone loss to fellow state titlist Haddon Heights in New Jersey’s Tournament of Champions. The Griffins had just won a third-straight state Non-Public A crown and were riding a 48-game win streak at the time.

Ninth-ranked Lakewood Ranch (30-2) avenged two early losses to Lake Brantley with a 8-2 victory over the Patriots in the Florida state Class 7A championship, and No. 10 Oaks Christian (34-1) closed the year with three California playoff triumphs after a mid-May loss to Los Alamitos snapped the Lions’ 31-game win streak.

State rankings submitted by the 2022 NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality, strength of schedule, and active NFCA membership.

USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 softball rankings

Roncalli solidifies No. 2 spot in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A second straight Indiana Class 4A crown helped Roncalli solidify the No. 2 spot behind Lake Creek in the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

Texas 5A titlist Lake Creek (41-0) continued as the top team for a 13th week, while the (33-0) Royals stayed right on their heels with last Saturday’s 16-0 rout of Harrison in the state final.

Keagan Rothrock, the Gatorade National Player of the Year for a second straight season, tossed a two-hit shutout in the championship game, striking out 15 of the 24 batters she faced on 94 pitches. She broke a number of her own single-season school records from Roncalli’s 2021 title run, including wins (28), strikeouts (382) and shutouts (19) in the circle, and had 14 home runs and 55 RBI (tied with fellow junior Abbey Hofmann) on offense.

Roncalli will enter 2023 on a 46-game win streak, just one from matching Lake Central’s record 47 straight, and is only the second team in state history with 40 consecutive victories.

Meanwhile, No. 7 Monroe-Woodbury (26-0) completed its undefeated season with two victories last Saturday. The Crusaders first beat Lancaster, 4-3, in the New York state Class AA semifinals, then topped Liverpool, 4-2, in the championship. Senior Brianna Roberts threw 160 strikes among her 222 pitches across the two contests to close her stellar high school career.

A loss to Exeter in the New Hampshire state Division I final cost Concord (26-2) two places this week, falling from 15th to No. 17, which was the only movement in the rankings.

USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 softball rankings

State champ Lake Creek still No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lake Creek capped a perfect season with its first state championship and remained atop the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 for an 12th week.

The (41-0) Lions beat Rock Hill, 8-2, in last Friday’s Texas state 5A semis and then blanked Georgetown, 7-0, on junior Ava Brown’s one-hit shutout in Saturday’s title game.

No. 2 Roncalli (32-0) can claim a state crown of its own when it faces Harrison in Saturday’s Indiana Class 4A championship. The Royals defeated both Pendleton Heights and Shelbyville last Saturday to advance in the tournament.

Unbeaten schools Rockridge (35-0) and Monroe-Woodbury (24-0) moved up to the sixth and seventh spots, respectively, following Donovan Catholic’s shocking loss in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions. Rockridge repeated as the Illinois 2A titlist, becoming the first team in state history to compile consecutive perfect seasons. Monroe-Woodbury won its regional game and plays Lancaster in the New York state Class AA final four on Saturday.

Donovan Catholic (30-1), meanwhile, slipped to No. 8 after following up last Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Mount St. Dominic for a third-straight state Non-Public A title with a 6-1 loss to Haddon Heights on Wednesday. The defeat halted the Griffins’ 48-game win streak and stopped them two wins short of becoming the first New Jersey squad to finish a season unbeaten since 2014.

Elsewhere, No. 10 Oaks Christian (34-1) won its CIF SoCal Division I final, 6-5, over Roosevelt, 14th-ranked Eastern Alamance (28-2) beat North Buncombe in the best-of-three North Carolina state 3A championship, and No. 18 Lakota West (29-3) beat Springfield, 9-2, to capture its first Ohio state Division I title.

State rankings submitted by the 2022 NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality, strength of schedule, and active NFCA membership.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —Undefeated Lake Creek swept its latest playoff series to remain atop the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 for an 11th week.

The (39-0) Lions closed out their best-of-three series with Santa Fe with a 7-2 victory last Thursday and advanced to Friday’s Texas Class 5A final four matchup with Rock Hill. The winner will play either Aledo or Georgetown in Saturday’s state championship.

Meanwhile, the rest of the top eight remained unchanged. No. 2 Roncalli (30-0) plays Pendleton Heights on Saturday for a berth in the Indiana state 4A semis later that night, while fourth-ranked Riverton (28-1) defeated West, 14-0 and 11-1, in the best-of-three championship series to win its second straight Utah Class 6A crown.

Sixth-ranked Lakewood Ranch (30-2) defeated Lake Brantley, who had dealt the Mustangs their only two losses of the season in March, 8-2, in last Saturday’s Florida state 7A final. Afterward, the coaching staff had more softball on their minds, as T.J. Goelz and wife Liz hopped on a plane to Blacksburg, Va., to see daughter Avery, a sophomore at the University of Florida, go 2-for-2 with three RBI to help the Gators advance to the NCAA Women’s College World Series. Another daughter, Kinsey, is a redshirt senior for Florida.

New York’s Monroe-Woodbury (23-0) was this week’s big mover, going from 17th to ninth on the strength of a 12-0 state Class AA subregional rout of North Rockland that extended the Crusaders’ perfect season.

No. 14 Watkins Memorial (28-2) is the lone newcomer to the Super 25. The Warriors play an Ohio Division I final four game against Springfield later today for the right to possibly face No. 25 Lakota West (27-3) in the state final.

State rankings submitted by the 2022 NFCA High School Steering Committee are used to compile the USA TODAY Sports/NFCA High School Super 25. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality, strength of schedule, and active NFCA membership.
