Notre Dame vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Stanford is awful.

How’s this for a season? It starts 3-2, it basically got Clay Helton first with a win over USC, it got to 2-1 in the Pac-12 with a thrilling win over Oregon, and then …

Nothing. Six straight losses, the offense scoring more than 14 just once, and with a shocking inability to do anything defensively. There aren’t any tackles for loss, big takeaways to turn games around, and the run defense just doesn’t work.

On the flip side, Notre Dame is humming.

It’s balanced, it’s ruthless, and it’s picking a wonderful time to play its best football of the year with a six-game winning streak, highlighted by the last three wins by a total of 117-9.

Get up early and Stanford won’t have anything in the arsenal to keep up.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Stanford Will Win

It’s been a shocker of a season with the parts the Cardinal have in place, but there have been a few okay spots during this late losing streak.

The passing game has been okay at times. It’s the last game of year, so here come the big bombs to stretch things out and take a few chances.

The Irish offensive line still allows plenty of plays in the backfield, it’s not like the team has beaten anyone that great since the loss to Cincinnati, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Notre Dame will run for a bajillion yards if it wants to. Stanford’s defensive front has been a total disaster as the season has rolled on.

Offensively, the Cardinal went from two turnovers in the five five games to 15 in the last six – with two or more in every one of the six, but it’s the run defense that’s the real issue.

Stanford has allowed 200 or more rushing yards in nine of the 11 games. There are at least 250 more about to come from the Irish.

Cal vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

It’s been an interesting time for Cal football.

Just when it was finally starting to turn things around with two nice wins over Colorado and Oregon State, it got hit with a COVID outbreak that gutted the team for its loss at Arizona.

The USC game got postponed, there was some question about the future of head coach Justin Wilcox – maybe it was time to move on, maybe the Washington gig would be a fit – and now it’s Stanford week.

As rough as things have been for the Bears, they’re playing one of the few teams that should make things easier.

Stanford has been awful since the stunning win over Oregon.

The passing game has been bad, the rushing attack worse, there’s been no run defense, and it’s getting uglier and uglier allowing close to 900 rushing yards over the last three weeks.

Cal hasn’t been great at running the ball, but it’s about to give it a go.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Stanford Will Win

It’s been an interesting time for Stanford football.

It had the team returning from 2020 to be much, much better than the Pac-12’s speed bump.

The defense never showed up – it allowed 200 rushing yards or more against everyone but USC and Washington State – the offense lost its passing game groove, and now the future of David Shaw with the program is being questioned.

As rough as things have been for the Cardinal, they’re playing one of the few teams that should make things easier.

Cal is still trying to get back up to speed. Even before the issues the defense was struggling on third downs, the offense had a rough time closing out drives with points, and the O line was struggling a bit too much. But …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford is a total mess.

The offense is bad, the defense worse, there’s a massive problem with turnovers, and it doesn’t get better from there.

Cal might not be fully functional, and it’s coming off a rough few weeks, but it’ll slug its way through with just enough of a running game against the depleted Cardinal D to pull this off.

Don’t expect pretty.

Utah vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

Can Stanford run the ball? No?

Then what are we doing here?

Utah is simple. Run the ball for 200 yards or more on Utah, beat Utah.

San Diego State did it. Oregon State did it, and so did BYU – the Utes lost all three games. Who else ran for 200 yards on the Ute D?

No one, and Utah won all five of those games.

Stanford ran for over 200 yards on Vanderbilt and that’s the only time the ground game worked all season. It ran for 156 yards total in the last three games.

Yeah that’s just a stat, but it goes to what takes Utah out of its style and rhythm. When the defensive front is holding up, everything else on this team works.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Stanford Will Win

Okay, so Stanford won’t do much on the ground against the Utah D. However, it’s got enough of a passing attack to make things interesting, and it’s getting Utah on the road.

For whatever reason – beyond the inability to stop the run – all of Utah’s losses came on the road, and the one time it came up with a road victory was against a USC program in turmoil.

Stanford has the type of team that will keep pressing with the passing game, will hang around for a full four quarters, and it’ll take advantage of that one opportunity to make something happen.

It went four straight games without a turnover, and then it melted down with eight in the last three games – all losses. Utah will apply the pressure, but it doesn’t take the ball away enough.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Tanner McKee is banged up.

The Stanford quarterback has been questionable all week – at best – and no matter what his status is, there’s just no running game to pick up the slack.

Utah isn’t going to get too funky here. Rely on the defense, get a few early scores, rely on the defense some more, and don’t take any big chances …

And rely on the defense.

Washington vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The pass defense continues to be terrific.

There are a whole lot of issues with the Huskies in their maddeningly disappointing season, but but the secondary has stepped up after giving up over 300 yards against Cal. Oregon State, UCLA, and Arizona were all able to run well, but none of them were able to get their passing games going.

The Huskies have the biggest issue against teams that can run. Stanford can’t run.

The Cardinal passing game has been solid, but they ran for 13 yards against Arizona State and 76 against Washington State. That made it four times on the year with under 100 yards on the ground, and the production won’t suddenly crank up this week.

On the other side, Washington’s offense might be hit-or-miss, but when the team needed something big, the downfield passes were there to get out alive against Arizona. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Stanford Will Win

Washington needed to work really, really, really hard to get out alive against a miserable Arizona team.

Washington hasn’t been bad – the losses to Oregon State and UCLA were close – but the offense just isn’t consistent enough with no ground game to rely on and under 330 yards of total O in each of the last four games.

Stanford’s D has hardly been a rock, but it has the biggest issues against the run. That’s not going to be a concern with the Dawgs failing to get to 100 yards on the ground in three of the last four games.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Will having two weeks off rejuvenate a banged up Stanford team that hasn’t won since beating Oregon at the beginning of the month and has just that won win since beating Vanderbilt on September 18th.

Neither team does everything quite right, and they both have massive flaws to expose, but Washington’s lack of a consistent offense will shine through in the fourth quarter.
