Arizona State vs Stanford Game Preview, Pac-12 Tournament

Why Arizona State Will Win

The Sun Devils have finally started to win.

They played well throughout the year – especially on the defensive side – but there wasn’t any payoff in loss after loss. That all changed around the middle of February, and now it comes into the Pac-12 Tournament on a 7-1 run.

The defense continues to be fantastic – no one has hit 70 points on the Sun Devils over the last eight games, and getting to 60 has been a grind. That includes a win over Stanford a few day ago..

Arizona State might not be hitting enough from three, but the defense is suffocating. Stanford only hit 37% from the field and couldn’t seem to get anything going in the 65-56 loss, but …

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford can hit the boards.

It’s not shooting well and scoring has been a problem. Fortunately, this isn’t going to be any sort of a shootout – the Cardinal should never be out of this.

As long as it can play a grinding game and win the rebounding battle – it was +10 against the Sun Devils – Stanford should be dangerous. It was able to win the first meeting back in late January even though it didn’t shoot well, but …

Arizona State vs Stanford: What’s Going To Happen

Stanford has apparently decided that it’s done scoring for the 2021-2022 college basketball season.

It hasn’t hit 70 points in a few weeks, it’s not getting enough from three, and it’s not doing a thing to manufacture points from the free throw line.

This isn’t going to be anything remotely pretty, but it’ll look just fine for an Arizona State defense that should take over early on.

Arizona vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford is having a few problems, only beating lowly Oregon State over the last six games and putting up just 39 points more than you did against Cal a few days ago.

However, the team can still hit the boards.

Arizona might have all the talent, the scoring, and the pop to score in surges, but there’s no shot to hang with this team if you can’t rebound.

Stanford gets a ton of offensive rebounds because there are plenty of changes, but it’s second in the Pac-12 behind Arizona in rebounding margin. It came up with nine more than the Wildcats in the first meeting and …

Why Arizona Will Win

And Stanford lost 85-57.

There’s just no scoring punch with the Cardinal right now. It shot well against the miserable Beavers, but they couldn’t buy a basket. They’ve had major issues just to get 60 points over the last several weeks, and they’re about to struggle against the Wildcat defense, too.

Arizona is fourth in the nation in field goal percentage allowed, and not it’s getting a team that hasn’t come close to hitting 40% of its shots over any of its last three games.

The Wildcats average over 84 points per game. Stanford has scored more than 80 once since pushing past Dartmouth in overtime in mid-December.

What’s Going To Happen

At some point Arizona is going to give everyone a rest.

It already has the Pac-12 regular season title locked up, and there’s still a date with Cal in a few days as the home finale, but the focus should still be there.

Stanford will be plucky, and it’ll be able to hang around a bit, but it’s just won’t score enough to pull off the shocker.

Stanford Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cardinal miss from the Pac-12 South Division?

As it if wasn’t enough of a kick in the teeth to have a schedule full of Power Five teams in 2021, Stanford gets the worst beat in the Pac-12 this year – it misses Arizona and Colorado from the South.

That means the team has to deal with defending Pac-12 champion Utah, USC, Arizona State, and UCLA – the four likely top teams in the South. Worse yet, the Utah and UCLA games are on the road.

If that wasn’t bad enough …

Stanford Football Schedule What To Know: The North isn’t any better

Seriously, Stanford. What did you do to tick off the scheduling gods? Again, last year was brutal enough, and now there’s the problem getting all the top teams against the South, and the conference season opens up against Washington and Oregon … on the road.

The Cal game is on the road, but that’s just up the highway a bit. Oregon State and Washington State as home games is fine, but that means the tougher dates are out of Palo Alto.

Stanford Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

No, seriously, Stanford. Who hates you this much? As if that Pac-12 slate isn’t enough, there’s a trip to Notre Dame to make it three road games in four weeks. If that and the Pac-12 season weren’t enough, the regular season ends against BYU.

It’s going to be a fight to get to six wins. Colgate should be a layup, but there aren’t any sure-thing wins the rest of the way.

UCLA vs Stanford Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

It’s been a rough last few games against Arizona and Arizona State, but that was coming off a dominant 66-43 win over Stanford early last week.

The Bruins didn’t shoot all that well inside, couldn’t hit from outside, and they still won in a walk because the Cardinal couldn’t make a thing.

Everything has to be prefect from the field for Stanford. It’s just 2-6 when it shoots under 42% – it made just 37% from the field in the first game and was a disastrous 4-of-29 from three.

The Cardinal don’t do enough on the free throw line and turn it over way too much to not shoot well, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Stanford Will Win

If UCLA could lose to Arizona State, could it continue to have problems on the road?

It allowed a normally mediocre ASU offense to play relatively well, the Arizona game was an emotional fight, and now comes a third road game in a row.

On the flip side, Stanford has been home for three games since the loss to UCLA on January 29th.

The Bruin defense hasn’t been as good as it needs to be at dealing with the three. Turnovers haven’t been an issue, but the team isn’t rebounding quite as well as it should.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford should be a bit peppier than UCLA at home, and it should be able to hold its own on the boards. Can it shoot well enough to pull this off?

Not in the second half.

UCLA won’t do anything amazing, but it’ll get past the tough grind of the last two games by busting out of an awful funk from three and doing a better job on the line.

2022 College Football Schedules: All 130 Teams

The February version of college football National Signing Day doesn’t have the hold on the sport like it used to – it’s the landline phone line in a 5G world – but it closes out the recruiting season.

Sort of.

Some programs were already done recruiting back in December, but everyone is always pitching and holding on to their own guys with the transfer portal a bigger deal now.

Why bother with a whole slew of young prospects when you can go shopping and get the mature guys you need?

But recruiting high school players is still a big deal for your base.

No, not everyone is going to transfer, and no, you can’t live off of getting guys through the portal. You need the cake to put the transfer portal frosting on.

Texas A&M destroyed it this recruiting season. Shock of shocks, Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Penn State – the normal big guys did big recruiting things. But you knew that.

What teams off the normal recruiting radar crushed it this season? More to the point, which schools and coaching staffs bounced back massive after a mediocre 2021?

5. Stanford Cardinal

It certainly helped a wee bit that USC and Oregon are in a transitional period and need a year or so to get back up to speed in the high-end recruiting world, but it’s not like Stanford is competing for the same guys as the rest of the Pac-12.

David Shaw’s 2020 class wasn’t bad, but the 2021 haul was a bit lacking.

There were a few nice parts, and the Cardinal always gets a star lineman or two, but it missed the WOW factor for a program that started to fall off. After a 3-9 season coming off a four-win 2020 – granted, there were only six games – and 4-8 2019, the reciting class needed guys.

Shaw hasn’t done a whole lot in the transfer portal, but he did what he must for the program and got the right guys from across the country for the right spots.

When Stanford rocks, its lines are dominant and the running game works. In come the infrastructure players with both lines improving, Sam Roush out of Tennessee is a top tight end, and he’s got two terrific-looking offensive tackles in Lucas Heyer and Fisher Anderson.

Again, it’s different because some programs aren’t quite there yet, but Stanford had one of the best recruiting runs in the Pac-12.

UCLA vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Okay, Stanford, now do that to the other team in Los Angeles.

The Cardinal pulled off a mini-shocker with a 64-61 win over USC on Thursday night. They shot well enough from the field, were good from three, and they clamped down when they absolutely had to.

They don’t have the offensive burst to keep up in a shootout, but UCLA will be without Johnny Juzang (COVID) and it’s about to play its third game in five games and its fourth in seven.

Stanford has to keep this simple. Control the possessions, continue to be good from the field, and own the rebounding margin. UCLA isn’t all that great on the boards, but …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why UCLA Will Win

Stanford makes a TON of mistakes.

It kept the turnovers to a minimum with just six against USC to go almost with only 13 fouls. It was by far the team’s cleanest all-around game of the year, and it was a total aberration.

Stanford is usually good for at least 15-to-20 turnovers a game, and the normally has a massive fouling problem.

UCLA doesn’t have to overextend itself. It doesn’t normally turn the ball over for easy points, it should have enough scoring pop to be okay, and it shouldn’t have a problem hitting from three on the Cardinal D.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

How tired is UCLA?

This is a different-style of team than USC, and it’s going to give Stanford a whole lot of problems with plenty of forced errors and a whole lot more scoring. As long as the legs and interest are both there, the Bruins won’t have a whole lot of problems.

They’re going to be too good from the outside.

It takes at least 80 points to beat UCLA, and Stanford won’t get there.

USC vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford has to clean up every possible opportunity.

The Cardinal have been awful from the field lately, they haven’t done enough from three – and despite the whopping 32 made free throws against Arizona State in the 79-76 win, they’re not all that great on the line.

Fortunately, USC is even worse at shooting free throws.

This isn’t the type of team that’s going to bomb away from the outside, but when it does, the Cardinal have to pounce. They should be able to negate USC’s strength on the defensive boards.

There’s a whole lot Stanford can’t do, but it’s amazing on the offensive glass. However, that’s because …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why USC Will Win

Stanford can’t shoot.

It has the size inside to create easy opportunities, but it doesn’t move the ball around all that well, turns it over a ton, and it doesn’t have the consistency from three to make up for the other issues.

It has gone ice cold from the field over the last few games – it didn’t get to 40% against either Arizona or Arizona State – and it has only been 50% from the field once since mid-December.

Again, winning on the boards is a must for Stanford, but USC is third in the nation at defensive rebounds. If there are a ton of one-and-done possessions, this will get ugly fast.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

After losing 75-69 to the Cardinal up in Palo Alto a few weeks ago, this will get ugly fast.

How did Stanford do it? Lots and lots and lots of USC fouls.

Stanford will try to force more hacking this time around, but it’s not going to work.

The USC defense is too good, it should at least hold serve when it comes to rebounding margin, and it shouldn’t take too much of a push to get up fast and put this away with a good run.
