Spurs ‘dream offseason trade’ is playmaking for Victor Wembanyama

The San Antonio Spurs’ “dream offseason trade” should be to put an elite playmaker next to Victor Wembanyama.

As the San Antonio Spurs have adapted to playing with Victor Wembanyama at the helm, they’ve made some significant improvements throughout the season. The 20-year-old rookie has been incredible on the defensive side of the ball, and his offense has taken some serious strides, too, especially as the team’s chemistry has improved.

Following their weird Jeremy Sochan-at-point-guard experiment at the beginning of the year, they’ve gone to a more traditional look, moving Tre Jones into the starting lineup. In addition, they’ve put Wembanyama at the center position full-time rather than having a second big next to him and having him run forward.

As the Spurs look to improve the team around Wembanyama this summer, Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report believes their “dream offseason trade” would be adding playmaking next to the star big man.

“When Wembanyama has shared the floor with Jones, the Spurs have posted a plus-4.0 net rating,” Buckley wrote. “Only six teams have that mark surpassed this season. If that degree of competitiveness is doable with Jones, just imagine what Wembanyama could do with a high-end option at point.

“That’s what the Spurs have already done by poking around Atlanta for a Trae Young trade. With a draft pick collection as strong as San Antonio’s, this franchise should be able to afford a floor general of Young’s ilk—if not Young himself.”

Pairing Wembanyama with an elite playmaker should be the Spurs’ goal.

Would a Trae Young trade be perfect or disastrous for Spurs?

Should the San Antonio Spurs trade for Trae Young?

When the San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama, they embarked on a quest to build the perfect team around him. He was one of the most hyped-up prospects in recent memory, and yet somehow, he’s managed to outperform many of the expectations placed upon him. But what’s next? How can the Spurs improve the team around him?

One idea that was reportedly explored was a potential trade for Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young. Pairing Young’s elite offensive game with Wembanyama could be a great combination, but there are an equal number of concerns that should be acknowledged with a potential Young trade. Most notably, his subpar play on the defensive end.

The NBA Swish YouTube channel recently discussed whether a Spurs trade for Young would be great or a disaster.

San Antonio will likely explore potential moves this summer, but is a trade for Young the right direction to go in?

Lack of point guard trade labeled ‘regret’ for Spurs post-deadline

If the San Antonio Spurs could have a redo, maybe they would have made a move for a point guard upgrade at the trade deadline.

While there was a bit of smoke heading into it, the San Antonio Spurs didn’t end up making any significant moves at this year’s trade deadline. They moved Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers for a second-round pick and Marcus Morris, who they subsequently bought out, but that’s not a big-time impact deal.

San Antonio isn’t gearing up for a playoff push or anything close to that, but they could have looked to add more talent in an attempt to spearhead Victor Wembanyama’s development. Most notably, adding an upgrade at the point guard position would have been a huge help for the 20-year-old rookie.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report wrote an article listing every team’s post-deadline regret, and for the Spurs, he said it was their lack of a move for an impact point guard.

“San Antonio, of course, has time to find its offensive initiator, but if the Spurs had been able to add one at the deadline, they could’ve used the stretch run to see what this group could do and what it still needs to eventually get on a championship track,” Buckley wrote. “Instead, they won’t find their floor general until this offseason at the earliest, meaning it might be a while before San Antonio even starts building a blueprint for constructing a contender around its young star.”

The point guard position continues to be the biggest area of need for the Spurs.

San Antonio Spurs trade tier list: Which players should be traded?

Which players should the San Antonio Spurs hang onto, and who should they trade immediately?

The San Antonio Spurs knew they were going into a rebuild, but even they probably hoped they would be a bit better than what they’ve been this season. They’ve been the worst team in the West for almost the entire year, and based on everything we’ve seen, it seemed highly likely that’s where they remain for the rest of the season.

In turn, they should be looking to make significant improvements heading into next year. Wasting any of Victor Wembanyama’s career should be viewed as a huge mistake, even though he’ll only be heading into his sophomore season next year. They should still look to get better.

With that, what players should the Spurs be looking to trade, and who should they hold onto? The CLAN the SPURS fan YouTube channel recently compiled a Spurs trade tier list, ranking all the players based on who he thinks the team should get rid of.

What should fans make of the Spurs-Trae Young trade rumors?

Are the San Antonio Spurs-Trae Young trade rumors real?

The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the worst teams in the league this season, and they didn’t make any moves at the trade deadline. However, they were linked to an All-Star: Trae Young. Reports have indicated that the Spurs showed an interest in Young and that interest isn’t expected to go away anytime soon.

San Antonio could revisit a potential Young deal this summer, as the Atlanta Hawks look destined to shake things up following another underwhelming season. The Spurs supposedly top the potential list of Young trade suitors heading into the summer, and the star point guard has shown an interest in playing with Victor Wembanyama.

But should fans take these rumblings seriously? The Locked On Spurs podcast recently discussed that very topic.

Young’s offensive talent would help Wembanyama immensely, and the Spurs big man could help mitigate some of the undersized guard’s defensive weaknesses with his length and talent on that end.

But are the rumors real? Or is it all smoke?

Report: Spurs, Hawks discussed Trae Young trade ahead of deadline

The San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks reportedly discussed a Trae Young trade ahead of this year’s deadline.

The San Antonio Spurs had a pretty quiet NBA trade deadline. They moved Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers, but other than that, their team remained the same. However, they were reportedly in discussions about a trade that would have completely changed the landscape of the NBA.

Long-time NBA insider Marc Stein of “The Stein Line” recently reported that the Spurs are set to top the list of potential Trae Young trade candidates this summer. The Atlanta Hawks could try to shake things up sometime soon, and trading Young would help them completely reset the roster in any way they see fit. But the deal was almost expedited.

According to a league executive who spoke with Howard Beck of The Ringer, the Spurs and Hawks discussed a Young deal ahead of this year’s trade deadline.

“One exec said Atlanta discussed a potential Young trade with San Antonio before last week’s deadline,” Beck wrote. “The Hawks were also well known to be shopping Dejounte Murray, their other star guard, before the deadline, but never found a deal they liked. It’s considered a near certainty that they will part with one, or both, this summer.”

The Spurs supposedly also showed a level of interest in a Dejounte Murray deal earlier this season. At this point, it seems inevitable that San Antonio and Atlanta will talk about a potential move for at least one of the star guards again this summer.

Report: Spurs ‘tops the perceived list’ of Trae Young trade spots

The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly at the top of the list of potential Trae Young trade suitors this summer.

While the San Antonio Spurs have survived at the bottom of the Western Conference this year, that was always the likely outcome of this season. For the Atlanta Hawks, who entered the season hoping to make a big for the playoffs, this season has been a rough one. They’re in the Play-In race, but just barely.

They decided to stand pat at the trade deadline, but this summer, they could look to seriously shake things up. According to long-time NBA insider Marc Stein and his newsletter, “The Stein Line,” reported that the Hawks have “convinced various rival teams that a Dejounte In/Trae Out course is going to be legitimately considered.”

In tandem with the notion that a Young trade could be considered this summer, Stein revealed that “San Antonio tops the perceived list” of potential trade suitors. And the feeling is mutual.

“The Spurs have circulated for months among prominent league observers as a viable destination for Young’s offensive gifts,” Stein wrote. “In Victor Wembanyama, they also seemingly possess precisely the sort of long and rangy defensive anchor who could mitigate Young’s defensive deficiencies. It is likewise believed in some corners of the league that Young would have interest in South Texas as a destination if he were forced to leave Atlanta.”

Young’s elite offensive talent would pair beautifully with Victor Wembanyama’s skillset on both ends of the court.

Andrew Nembhard listed as ‘last-minute trade target’ idea for Spurs

Indiana Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard was suggested as a potential San Antonio Spurs trade target.

It seems unlikely that the San Antonio Spurs will make any huge trades at this year’s deadline, but adding some depth at positions of need could be a worthwhile strategy, as could selling some veteran players who may not be in the team’s long-term plan. The point is that there are some trade ideas that make sense.

The point guard position has been a contentious topic throughout Spurs discourse this year, as they’ve gone through a few different options at that spot. Jeremy Sochan wasn’t the right fit, and while Tre Jones has been solid, adding depth at the position could help them figure out a long-term solution.

Dan Favale of Bleacher Report wrote a list of five “last-minute trade targets” for every team around the league, and one of the guys he mentioned for the Spurs was Indiana Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard.

“Nembhard may be too important to the win-now Indiana Pacers as a reserve playmaker and defensive try-hard. Still, the Spurs have a peppering of good-not-great draft picks to peddle if Indy’s looking to restock its cupboard on the heels of the Pascal Siakam trade,” Favale wrote.

With Tyrese Haliburton dealing with some injuries this season, Nembhard has had to step up into a bigger role at times this year, even starting some games in the All-Star’s place. He’s played pretty well in his sophomore season.

The 24-year-old is averaging 8.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists while shooting 48.3% from the floor and 32.1% from beyond the three-point arc. Nembhard’s ability to play on and off the ball would also be a useful tool in San Antonio.

Spurs listed among ‘best fits’ for potential Davion Mitchell trade

The San Antonio Spurs were listed among the potential “best fits” for Sacramento Kings guard Davion Mitchell in a trade.

As the San Antonio Spurs prepare to tackle the impending trade deadline, big-time moves shouldn’t be expected. The Spurs currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with no realistic chance of making a playoff run. However, any trade they decide to make this season could help them prepare for their future with Victor Wembanyama.

Outside of the rookie Frenchman, one of the biggest talking points of the Spurs’ season has been the point guard positon. Tre Jones has assumed the starting role, but adding talent in that spot could help the Spurs out both right now and moving forward.

According to Sam Vecenie of The Athletic, who recently concocted a trade board of the players most likely to be moved at the deadline, San Antonio is one of the “best fits” for Sacramento Kings point guard Davion Mitchell.

“It says a lot about Mitchell’s offensive struggles that the Kings have found it hard to get his defensive energy and aggression on the floor,” Vecenie wrote. “He’s still an absolute menace on defense, flying around with reckless abandon and causing issues at the point of attack for opposing perimeter players. However, he’s been one of the worst offensive players in the league so far this year, posting awful shooting percentages from the field and from 3.”

The other top potential fits Vecenie noted are the Toronto Raptors, Memphis Grizzlies, and Detroit Pistons. He seems to be in need of a second-chance home at this point.

Adding Mitchell’s defensive-minded game to the Spurs rotation could give them a much-needed boost on that side of the ball.

Dominick Barlow reflects on path to NBA career with Spurs

San Antonio Spurs two-way big man Dominick Barlow recently detailed his journey to the NBA.

The San Antonio Spurs have been in the news all season long. Despite having one of the worst records in the NBA, the presence of Victor Wembanyama has been enough for them to garner a ton of media attention, as everyone wants to watch the 20-year-old Frenchman during his first season in the league.

And while Wembanyama is sure to have a long, fun career, there are some other players on the Spurs who deserve positive media attention, too. There are the more obvious ones, like Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan, but behind every NBA player, there is a great story.

Spurs two-way big man Dominick Barlow recently detailed his journey in an interview with Isabella DiAmore of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“Respect to my younger self, like if you saw me now just knowing that I made a promise to myself of getting to the NBA and I stuck with it,” Barlow said. “Being able to stay the course while dealing with COVID, going underrecruited, and having to go through all that stuff made me stronger mentally.”

The NBA was always a dream, but Barlow didn’t believe it until he got there.

“I probably would have thought I would be a college student right now,” Barlow said. “The NBA is like a dream; it almost doesn’t feel real sometimes. My friends remind me sometimes and put perspective in me — I’m grateful for that.”

While he may not be getting a ton of minutes for the Spurs, he’s shown some real promise, and his story is undoubtedly awesome.
