Away from home, Saints are Week 1 underdogs vs. Packers

Away from home, Saints are Week 1 underdogs vs. Packers

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://saintswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The New Orleans Saints’ regular season kickoff is going to look weird. They’re “hosting” the Green Bay Packers all the way out in Jacksonville, at the Jaguars’ TIAA Bank Field due to the impacts of Hurricane Ida on New Orleans. While previous listings from oddsmakers gave the Saints a homefield advantage against Green Bay at the Caesars Superdome, the game’s relocation puts the Saints in a tough spot.

Tipico Sportsbook has the Saints opening as underdogs, with the visiting Packers favored to win by 4.5 points. The over/under of 50.5 projects a final tally in the neighborhood of Green Bay 28, New Orleans 23. That would be a seven-point drop for the Saints over their regular season scoring average the last three years (30.1), as well as the total they scored against the Packers in last season’s matchup (a 38-30 loss at home).

It’s not unwarranted, though. Jameis Winston has his work cut out for him against a Packers defense eager to prove themselves. Winston will be working without his best wide receiver while Michael Thomas continues to recover from offseason ankle surgery, meaning second-year pro Marquez Callaway has the unenviable task of running against Green Bay’s best cover corner Jaire Alexander (who won Pro Bowl and All-Pro second team recognition a year ago). And that doesn’t even get into the challenge New Orleans’ defense faces in Aaron Rodgers and his strong supporting cast.

Oddly, all three of the other NFC South squads are favored to win this week. Sam Darnold and the Carolina Panthers are 5.5-point favorites against his old New York Jets team. The Atlanta Falcons have an easy (on paper) matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, which they are favored to win by 3.5 points. And the reigning Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, of course, are 7.5-point favorites over the visiting Dallas Cowboys in the 2021 season opener — can both teams lose that one?

The Colorado launch marks the company’s second U.S. state after it went live in New Jersey in December. Tipico Sportsbook was able to expand into Colorado through support from Century Casinos, Inc., a Colorado-based gaming company.

“We are thrilled to announce Tipico’s continued growth within the United States,” Adrian Vella, CEO of Tipico U.S., said in a release. “We look forward to continuing to grow our U.S. footprint with exciting announcements in the pipeline that will change the game for avid sports fans and bettors.”

Tipico is a U.S. sportsbook originally founded in Europe in 2004.

Users can download the app at the Apple and Google Play stores and begin placing bets on a variety of leagues. Tipico allows users to wager on live sports markets across the globe, with odds managed by the company’s in-house trading team.

Tipico, the leading sports betting provider in Germany and one of the top sports betting companies worldwide, said it plans to expand into other U.S. states in the coming months. The sportsbook offers digital and mobile betting entertainment across 30 different sports.

Tipico USA Technology announced an exclusive agreement with Gannett Co. in July to provide new sports betting content throughout the USA TODAY Network.

Saints are unfortunate home underdogs vs. Packers in Week 1

The Saints are considered home underdogs to open the 2021 season, with the visiting Packers favored for Week 1 by Tipico Sportsbook:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://saintswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Just how successful will the New Orleans Saints be this season? Oddsmakers aren’t expecting much of them, at least in their season-opening home game with the Green Bay Packers.

According to Tipico Sportsbook, Green Bay is favored for that Sept. 12 kickoff at Caesars Superdome (on FOX at 3:25 p.m. CT) — by 2.5 points, nearly a field goal. Odds were widely unavailable over the summer during Aaron Rodgers’ prolonged absence, but now that he’s leading the Packers again there appears to be little confidence in the Saints.

That isn’t too shocking considering Rodgers’ squad got away with a 37-30 win last season when they visited New Orleans. Tipico’s over/under for the follow-up has been set at 50.5 points, which is tied for the sixth-highest scoring game of Week 1.

Last year, the Saints ranked fifth around the league with 30.1 points scored per game. Green Bay ranked best in the NFL with a 31.8 per-game scoring output (which, combined, equals a weekly average of 61.9).

We’ll see if New Orleans can cook up similar production without Drew Brees, Michael Thomas, Wil Lutz, potentially Deonte Harris, and neither of last year’s co-starters at tight end. They may need even more from Alvin Kamara than the 197 scrimmage yards and pair of touchdowns he contributed last year. Whether it’s Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill starting under center against Rodgers, here’s hoping they and their supporting cast are up to the challenge.

Advice and prediction

We are going to see everybody’s A game and with the home crowd backing up the Nets, Joe Harris particularly will be able to find that much needed confidence to break out of his shooting slump. His impact will be the most important factor in this game. Shooters shoot no matter what and I expect Harris to show the world how elite of a shooter he really is by finding his rhythm despite the great defense Milwaukee has been playing on him. This should be enough get Brooklyn over the hump. Home teams are the overwhelming favorites historically in Game 7s. Take the Nets -1.5.

Prediction: Nets 118, Bucks 106

Place your legal, online sports bets in VA, CO, IA, IN, NJ, PA, TN and WV at BetMGM.

Advice and prediction

We witnessed an offensive masterpiece from the Nets in Game 4. They took advantage of a depleted Celtics squad and, more importantly, they responded to adversity for the first time in the playoffs. With the way they won in Game 4, it’s easy to see all the momentum is on Brooklyn’s side for Game 5. Take the Nets minus-12.5.

Prediction: Nets 136, Celtics 112

Advice and prediction

With no minute restriction on James Harden, Kevin Durant most likely getting his minutes ramped up and overall the Nets being healthy there shouldn’t be a reason to not take the Nets -8. It’s hard to not see at least two of the three players on Brooklyn’s big three go for 30 points. The depth for the Nets will also be incredible amidst Chris Chiozza’s return.

Prediction: Nets 128, Celtics 106

Saints schedule ranked among 10 toughest based on projected win totals

The New Orleans Saints have one of the toughest 2021 strength of schedules based off of projected win totals, but they’ll be ready for it.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://saintswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The NFL is preparing to put on a show for its 2021 schedule release in prime time on Wednesday night, but the New Orleans Saints already know their opponents. And it’s a tough slate: seven of their 17 games will be played against 2020 playoff teams, including two divisional matchups with the Super Bowl champion Buccaneers (plus tilts with the Bills, Titans, Packers, Seahawks, and Washington). And four of those games will be played away from the Superdome.

Pro Football Network crunched the numbers and found that the Saints are tied with Washington for the seventh-toughest strength of schedule in 2021. But New Orleans is well equipped for the challenge. Of the teams ranked within the top ten, only the Rams (tied for ninth) are projected to win more games than the Saints.

BetMGM has the Saints with nine projected wins, which places well amongst their peers. It’s worth remembering that while the Saints do have a challenging schedule ahead of them, they’ll be a tough out for every other team they face, too.
