Troy (4-5) vs South Alabama (4-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Troy Will Win

South Alabama can’t get its running game going.

The Jaguars aren’t getting enough out of their offensive line – the ground attack hasn’t hit 125 yards in any of the last five games – and Troy could use the break.

Okay over the first half of the season. the Troy defensive front has had problems against the better running games in the Sun Belt. This week, Troy just needs to hold its own on the lines.

South Alabama isn’t good in pass protection. If the Trojans can get into the backfield on a regular basis, they should control the game.

Week 14 College Schedule

Why South Alabama Will Win

Why is Troy losing lately – on a three-game losing streak and with four in the last five games?

It almost never has the ball.

Troy’s offense stalled in the loss to Appalachian State, the running game  has been non-existent over the last five games, and it’s all reflected in the time of possession battle.

The Trojans only have the ball for 26:43 per game, and USA has to take advantage of that. It’s not like the Jaguars will or are capable of grinding out the clock, but they’re going to give it a shot.

Don’t turn the ball over, hit the big pass plays when they’re there, and rely on two Troy turnovers – the Trojans are -4 in the last three games in turnover margin.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Which team is going to pull up out of the nosedive to get a bowl bid?

Granted, the bowl system is all imploding this season and who knows what’s going to happen, but considering the Sun Belt’s number of bowl ties, the winner of this will probably get an invite, and the loser is probably out.

South Alabama will get a bit more out of its offense, and being at home will matter. The Jaguars were on a run of four road games in five before coming home, and this is Troy’s fourth road game in five.

Arkansas State (3-6) vs South Alabama (3-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why South Alabama Will Win

South Alabama needs to come up with takeaways and it has to own the clock.

This hasn’t been a great Jaguar team in turnover margin, but it managed to come up with four takeaways in last week’s loss to Georgia State, eight in the last three games, and 11 in the last five games.

The team has to be a +2, and Arkansas State might just make it happen – it’s -4 on the year and has turned it over two times or more five times on the season. The Jaguars need the breaks because …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The South Alabama offense has just sort of stopped.

It wasn’t all that dominant throughout the year, and now scoring points has become a major problem. The Jaguars haven’t scored more than 17 in any of the last four games and managed a total of 30 over the last three.

The O line is allowing way too many plays in the backfield, and Arkansas State has just enough of a pass rush to be a problem.

That, and the Red Wolves lead the Sun Belt in total offense. They have the potential to get up fast and make USA press – that would be a problem.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas State isn’t doing much of anything defensively – the team gave up 47 points and a big pass day to Texas State last week – and it’s struggling on a four-game losing streak, but now it’s back at home after going on the road three times in the last four week games.

The South Alabama offense will perk up, but it won’t be enough as it stalled out just often enough on the road for the Red Wolves to take over.

Appalachian State Battles Coastal Carolina In The Sun Belt Bowl

The Old School Marshall duels the Young Gun Chanticleers this Saturday when Coastal Carolina hosts Appalachian State

At the start of this stupid season, if you had told me that Coastal Carolina would be undefeated and ranked #15 in the nation after 12 weeks of football, I’d have probably said, “Yeah, okay” because Lord Entropy is the Sun Belt’s only master. If you told me Rip Torn would also lead in rushing, I’d have believed it, too.

Yet, the Sun Belt’s Sheriff’s badge still shines on the chest of the Mountaineers, its only blemish a loss to currently undefeated Marshall. Appalachian State may be a bit longer in the tooth than the Chants, but Zack Thomas is still a unit behind center, the defense is as stingy as ever, and the citizens of Boone are plenty surly that anyone would dare question their legitimacy.

Short story shorter, Appalachian State wasn’t letting anyone besmirch the supremacy of the Mountaineers. Respect and fist bumps, App fans.

However, to dismiss the Chanticleers is to make a very big mistake; they are legit good. The Chants shut-out a Georgia State offense that puts up 39 points per game. They’re a member of the Sun Belt’s 2020 Big XII Massacre Squad. They’ve defeated #21 Louisiana in Lafayette. Coastal’s freshman QB, Grayson McCall, has been added to the Maxwell Award watch list.

Coastal Carolina’s proficiency on both sides of the ball reminds me of…Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers are also legit good – and well-rounded. The offense and defense both rank second in the Sun Belt. QB Zac Thomas is having another elite season behind center. And they made Arkansas State look like a division two school in Jonesboro.

Yet, while the Mountaineers have been solid, they haven’t been dominating. Comparing apples, Appalachian State struggled in a 17-13 win at Boone over Georgia State – the same Georgia State that Coastal demolished 51-zero in Atlanta. Sometimes, the Mountaineers’ offense stalls. Coastal always seems to coast.

Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina enjoy an early tee-time in Boone this Saturday on ESPN 2. Whoever wins gets to pin the Sun Belt Sheriff Star on their chests, even if Lord Entropy remains the law of the conference.

Georgia State (3-4) vs South Alabama (3-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Georgia State Will Win

Run well, and good things happen.

Georgia State had problems with several of the Sun Belt’s best teams, but it’s been able to run well throughout the season with 210 yards or more in each of the first four games and with 263 against ULM.

South Alabama isn’t one of the Sun Belt’s best teams, and it’s having huge problems against the run allowing close to 750 yards over the last three games.

Combine that with all the tackles for loss and the pressure in the backfield, and the Panthers have the right mix to control things on both sides of the line all game long.

CFN Experts Picks, Predictions: Week 12

Why South Alabama Will Win

South Alabama has a solid, efficient passing game, it’s able to control the clock, and it doesn’t shoot itself in the foot with a whole lot of penalties and turnovers.

Georgia State might have a good pass rush and it’s disruptive, but the secondary has been hammered very, very, very hard by just about everyone. At 3-5 and at home, the Jaguars are going to turn it loose with a quick-hitting passing game that’s going keep the pressure on.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

There’s something to be said about patterns. Georgia State started the season with a loss to Louisiana, and has gone W-L-W-L-W-L in the last six games. Schedule had something to do with it, and being able to adjust is a big part of it, too.

Georgia State will get the O going after the tough battle with Appalachian State, and the South Alabama offense will have a tough time getting up to speed after three rough weeks.

Louisiana (6-1) vs South Alabama (3-4) Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

The Jaguars might be sputtering offensively lately, but the defense hasn’t been bad. It’s not getting into the backfield enough, but overall it’s doing a nice job of not breaking after bending.

Coastal Carolina was able to rumble however it wanted to, but USA only allowed 23 points – it held up, but the O didn’t help.

The defensive front is just active enough overall against the run, the linebacking corps is solid, and getting off the field with third down stops isn’t an issue. The D has to keep the team alive because …

Week 11 Schedule, Predictions, Lines

Why Louisiana Will Win

The South Alabama O has stopped.

The ground game hasn’t hit 100 yards in each of the last two games and has yet to get past 170 yards on the season. The passing attack is okay, but it’s not explosive enough to make up for the inability to run.

Louisiana’s offense has put up over 1,000 yards combined in the last two games with the balance continuing from the start of the Sun Belt season. Combine the running game with the defense that’s taking the ball away in bunches, and there shouldn’t be an issue if the team gets up early.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be more of a grind than the Ragin’ Cajuns might like, but it’ll be a good, tough win.

South Alabama’s defense will fight the good fight, but the offense won’t be able to take advantage of its opportunities. Louisiana will get up in the first quarter and won’t lose the lead, but it’ll have to battle for a full four quarters.

Coastal Carolina (6-0) vs South Alabama (3-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why South Alabama Will Win

It’s been a solid year with three wins, two of the three losses in close battles, and with the team doing a nice job with an efficient passing game and without a whole lot giveaways.

Only UAB held the Jaguars to under 200 passing yards, and Coastal Carolina has given up yards through the air from time to time. This might be a great Chanticleer defense, but the USA lines have been strong from the start, and there should be just enough of a rushing attack to balance things out.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

The team is getting better.

It had a showdown on the road against a high-powered Georgia State team with the talent and offense to pull off the big win, and instead, it was a total wipeout. The Chanticleer defense stepped up in the 51-0 win, QB Grayson McCall was brilliant, and the team stayed on track to be in the mix for a New Year’s Six game.

Yeah, the defense has allowed passing yards here and there, but it’s been great overall – it leads the Sun Belt – the offense is outstanding at moving the chains, and the team dominates the time of possession battle.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

South Alabama won’t let this be a total wipeout, but the Chanticleers are playing too well in all phases.

Coastal Carolina will be get up early and won’t be pressed too much, and converting on two takeaways will turn it into a runaway in the fourth quarter.

Coastal Carolina Is The Sun Belt Sheriff Now

Have you ever seen a promo for a television show and thought, “How is Blue Bloods still on?” Or, “Who the heck is watching Bull?” Somewhere out there lives a fan waiting patiently for the next episode of “Man With A Plan.”

See, there are infinite universes out there. And in one of those universes (which happens to be ours), Coastal Carolina is the AP #15 program in the land.

Don’t look at me. I haven’t a clue as to how it happened, except that the Chants have quietly improved their play each year since entering the Sun Belt in 2017, the autumn following Coastal’s magic national baseball championship. That should have been a big bucket of foreshadowing, of course. But we’re as clueless as the characters in Bob Hearts Abishola, am I right? (Honestly, I don’t know.)

When Coastal Carolina entered the league, they were coached by some kind of venture capitalist named Joe Moglia, better known for being the CEO of Ameritrade than his X’s and O’s. But Moglia’s Chants paid dividends, and when he sold to Jamey Chadwell, the stock got even stronger.

We should have seen it coming. Coastal won only five games last year, but only lost to the Arkansas State Red Wolves by a point. This year, Chadwell’s cocks pounded A-State 52-23. To show they meant business, Coastal obliterated an improved Georgia State squad fifty-one TO ZERO! Coastal Carolina, we beg for the mercy you will not give!

Coastal Carolina is a perfect 6-0, which includes a pimp-slapping of Kansas. They’re led by a freshman QB, Grayson McCall, whose skills are legit and will haunt the Sun Belt for years. The only serious threats to a perfect season are a game with Appalachian State and a season closer with #25 Liberty. How is this happening? Why is this happening? What is happening?

As the Panthers’ can attest, it’s not just McCall and RB C.J. Marable crushing opponent’s spirits. The front four lead the #14 ranked defense with 20 sacks. C.J. Brewer is unstoppable and should be secured in a steel vault between games. The Chants are so well-rounded, the math department is using the team to calibrate their instruments to pi.

As a Sun Belt original gangster, I view the Chanticleer’s success with gritted teeth. A team so recently removed from FCS should have to pay their dues with winless seasons and years of chagrin. We did! But here we are, eyes blazing from taking in that ridiculous teal field, watching what was once a guaranteed body bag delivering death punch after death punch to cringing opponents. It’s not fair!

But they’re a whole lot more fun to watch than a season of Young Sheldon.
