Seahawks beat Cardinals 30-18, further cement 1st place in NFC West

The Seattle Seahawks once again faced a divisional game with major implications for first place… and once more they delivered. Seattle went to the Valley of the Sun to defeat the Arizona Cardinals 30-18 to further cement their spot atop the NFC West.

Easily the most complete game since the 34-14 drubbing of the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7, the Seahawks were in complete control once they took a 10-7 lead after their first of two back-to-back interceptions in the first quarter. The turnovers, paired with two rushing touchdowns from Zach Charbonnet – who was nothing short of dominant – helped build a 24-10 halftime lead for the Hawks. Charbonnet, in relief of the injured Kenneth Walker III, rushed for 134 yards on 22 carries.

Seattle was not as explosive in the second half, but they did more than enough to nurse their two-score lead. The Seahawks only scored two field goals on their five possessions, yet it helped keep the lead well out of reach from a Cardinals team falling back to Earth at a rapid rate.

Geno Smith and Co. played incredibly efficient in the second half, avoiding any crucial mistake or momentum-shifting giveaway. Smith completed 24-of-30 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown to help Seattle claim their fourth-straight win, and seventh-straight over Arizona. In his career as the Seahawks quarterback, Smith is now a perfect 6-0 against the Cardinals.

Next up, the Hawks return to the friendly confines of Lumen Field for a Sunday Night Football showdown against the Green Bay Packers. This game will be a bit of a playoff preview. As it stands, the Seahawks currently occupy the No. 3 seed in the NFC, and would play the No. 6 seed… which is currently occupied by the Packers.

First half recap: Seahawks lead Cardinals 24-10

First half recap: Seahawks lead Cardinals 24-10

The Seattle Seahawks need a victory to maintain their perch atop the NFC West, and so far they are playing like they want to win the division today. Seattle has come out firing against the Arizona Cardinals, powered by their stifling defense and efficient offense.

After surrendering an opening drive touchdown, head coach Mike Macdonald’s defense clamped down. Seattle snagged interceptions from quarterback Kyler Murray on back-to-back possessions. To the relief of every 12th Man, Woman and Child out there, the Seahawks took full advantage of both turnovers. Geno Smith found JSN for a 19 yard touchdown strike, and Zach Charbonnet scored on a creative goal line play design.

Speaking of Charbonnet, he has been on a tear this first half. The second year back, starting in relief of the injured Kenneth Walker III, is reminding everyone why Seattle spent a second round pick on him in last year’s draft. So far on the day, Charbonnet has 87 rushing yards, including a 51-yard dash for his second touchdown of the game.

Seattle had six possessions in the first half and scored points on four of them to give them the 14-point lead. The Seahawks will get the ball back to start the second half.

First half stats:

  • Geno Smith 15-of-18 for 151 yards, one touchdown
  • Total Yards: Seahawks 272, Cardinals 156
    • Rushing: Seahawks 121, Cardinals 47
    • Passing: Seahawks 151, Cardinals 109
  • Total Plays: Seahawks 32, Cardinals 28
  • First Downs: Seahawks 12, Cardinals 8
  • Time of Possession – Seahawks 16:40, Cardinals 13:20

The Seattle Seahawks went on quite a tear in the first quarter, thanks to a pair of interceptions from Ernest Jones IV and Coby Bryant. Seattle took full advantage of both turnovers. After the first, Geno Smith found Jaxon Smith-Njigba 19 yards down the field in the end zone on the next play.

On the second, it took the Seahawks a little longer to score… all of five whole plays this time! What stood out is how creative the play design was at the goal line to get running back Zach Charbonnet into the end zone. Seattle’s short yardage offense has struggled this year, but kudos to offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb for thinking outside the box on this one.

But Charbonnet was not done. He enjoyed the taste of the end zone so much he wanted another bite of the apple, and he took a big one. Leading 17-10 in the waning moments of the second quarter, Charbonnet took the ball and was off to the races as he sprinted 51 yards down the field for his second touchdown of the afternoon.

There is plenty of game left, but I have a strong feeling who is going to make the Studs list today.

Watch: Seahawks snag back-to-back interceptions in the first quarter

The Seattle Seahawks have had an explosive first quarter, and it has been fueled by the defense forcing turnovers. The Cardinals drew first blood with an opening drive touchdown, but that was where their highlights ended in the opening frame.

On Arizona’s second possession, quarterback Kyler Murray threw a dart directly to Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV. It was the first interception Jones has snagged as a Hawk.

One play later, Geno Smith found Jaxon Smith-Njigba to give Seattle the lead.

The fireworks did not end there for Seattle’s defense. On the Cards’ ensuing drive, pressured by linebacker Derick Hall, Murray tried to escape pressure. Unfortunately for him, his hurried pass landed in the waiting arms of safety Coby Bryant.

Two weeks ago, Bryant won NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his interception and subsequent touchdown return. While this didn’t make it back to the house this time, the Seahawks still took advantage by finding the end zone five plays later behind the legs of Zach Charbonnet.

Can RB George Holani make an impact for the Seahawks?

Can RB George Holani make an impact for the Seahawks?

The Seattle Seahawks were dealt a brutal blow on Saturday when it was announced running back Kenneth Walker III was ruled OUT. Seattle will have to compete in the Week 14 rematch without their best ball carrier. With Walker no longer active, filling his place is rookie running back George Holani, who was elevated off the practice squad.

Holani turned plenty of heads this preseason, when he rumbled his way to 66 total yards on 17 carries in his three games. He even managed to find the end zone twice, including the first touchdown of the exhibition season for the Seahawks. The question now shifts to Week 14 – can Holani make an impact for a Seattle offense struggling to run the ball?

The Seahawks have not had more than 285 total yards of offense in four of their last five games, and are really struggling getting anything going on the ground. The main culprit of this problem is of course Seattle’s atrocious offensive line. Surely backup Zach Charbonnet will get the lion’s share of carries in Walker’s absence, and I would not be surprised if third-stringer Kenny McIntosh gets some looks as well.

However, I don’t think Holani should be ignored from the game plan. He has only suited up in one game this year, a Week 2 road trip to play the New England Patriots. The Seahawks, at times this year under Ryan Grubb, have abandoned the run far too early. Yes, they struggle to get things going on the ground, but there are other times where they move off the run when they do not have to do so. Perhaps Holani can provide a bit of a spark to a Seahawks team that are underdogs for an eighth-straight week.

Seahawks win was a historic loss for Kyler Murray

Seahawks win was a historic loss for Kyler Murray

The Seattle Seahawks took care of business against the Arizona Cardinals, defending home turf with a 16-6 win over the Red Birds. Seattle’s defense was truly suffocating, limiting the Cardinals to only a pair of field goals in the crucial NFC West showdown. The only other time Arizona was in striking distance of points was at the game when they attempted a long field goal in a long-odds effort to make it a one score game and hope for a successful onside kick. The field goal missed.

As a result, the Cardinals were prevented from reaching the end zone even once, making it a specifically rare loss for quarterback Kyler Murray. Ever since he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, Murray has been the starter when healthy. Typically, Arizona’s offense with Murray under center has not been the problem. But in Week 12, his unit stalled, and for only the fourth time in his tenure as a starter, the Cardinals failed to produce an offensive touchdown.

Why is this historic? Well, because of the now-four times this has happened, the Seahawks have been responsible for half! Obviously, one was the 16-6 victory on Sunday. But the other time it happened was in 2022 when Seattle defeated Arizona 19-9. Weirdly enough, Week 12 of this season capped off a somewhat bizarre trilogy of low-scoring, 10-point wins for the Seahawks over the Cardinals at Lumen Field.

  • 2024: Seahawks win 16-6
  • 2023: Seahawks win 20-10
  • 2022: Seahawks win 19-9

The only other times Murray’s offense has been kept out of the end zone was a 31-9 loss to the Saints in 2019, and a 20-12 loss to the Rams in 2022 as well.

This was a incredible performance by Seattle’s defense. We will find out soon enough if they can replicate this performance when these teams face off against one another in less than two weeks time.

First half recap: Seahawks lead the Cardinals 7-3

First half recap: Seahawks lead the Cardinals 7-3

Another week and yet another slow start for the Seattle Seahawks and their offense. Week 12 between the Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals has become quite a defensive struggle, which is what the last two games between these teams at Lumen Field were.

The game started with six-consecutive drives ending in punts. Arizona struck first blood on their fifth possession of the day, with a 35-yard field goal. Seattle responded with another punt of their own. However, the defense, which has been playing outstanding today, held their own once more.

The Seahawks offense finally got things cooking right before the two minute warning, when Geno Smith hit Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 46-yard reception to set Seattle up at Arizona’s 3-yard line. Two plays later, Smith and JSN sealed the deal with a touchdown.

The Cardinals, in their final possession of the half could not do much with limited time, and punted once more. In this game, there have been nine combined punts. The only time

First half stats:

  • Total Yards: Seahawks over Cardinals 145-110
    • Rushing: Cardinals over Seahawks 28-20
    • Passing: Seahawks over Cardinals 125-82
  • Total plays: Seahawks over Cardinals 32-27
  • First downs: Seahawks over Cardinals 8-5
  • Time of Possession – Seahawks over Cardinals 16:12-13:48

Geno Smith has completed 11-of-16 passes for 150 yards. JSN leads the team with 4 receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown. Kenneth Walker has 20 yards on eight carries, unable to get much going. Defensively, the Seahawks have sacked Kyler Murray three times. Unfortunately, Arizona has gotten to Smith four times themselves.

The Seahawks will get the ball to start the second half. Be sure to follow @TheSeahawksWire and @KoleMusgrove23 for more highlights, analysis and updates.

Golden Tate believes the Seahawks can ‘shock the world’

Golden Tate believes the Seahawks can ‘shock the world’

It is simply amazing the world of difference even a single win can mean in the NFL. The Seattle Seahawks likely saved their season from going under with their 20-17 upset win over the San Francisco 49ers. It may only be a single win, but it was the difference between falling to 4-6 or improving to 5-5, which puts them right back in the middle of the NFC West hunt.

Folks around the league are noticing it, such as former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate. On Good Morning Football, Tate explained how this team can potentially “shock the world” given the opportunity presented to them in the near future.

Namely, the Arizona Cardinals, who Seattle faces twice in the next three weeks. Including this weekend, for a crucial divisional showdown.

When Tate says the next few weeks could “make or break” the Seahawks’ season, he is not exaggerating. Arizona is the only team in the NFC West with a winning record, but they are only 6-4. Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco are all close behind with identical 5-5 records. In fact, the NFC West is the only division in football where not one team is below .500 on the year.

Facing the Cardinals twice in a three-week span is a tall order, but an excellent opportunity to potentially find a way to get back into first place.

Right now, the NFC Playoff picture looks like the North is going to send three teams to the postseason – Detroit, Green Bay and Minnesota. In the East, the Eagles look back to their usual winning ways, but the Washington Commanders are perhaps the shock team of the conference. Should all those teams qualify for the playoffs, then the only path for a West team to get in the dance would be to win the division outright.

So, why not Seattle? Like Showtime Tate said, it’s make or break time.
