Kerryon Johnson with great tweet after Lions sign Adrian Peterson

The Detroit Lions are signing 35-year-old Adrian Peterson.

The Detroit Lions saw Adrian Peterson run over and through them for many years as the great running back played for NFC North rival the Minnesota Vikings. Now, the team in Honolulu Blue hopes the 35-year-old will do the same for them.

The NFL’s fifth all-time leading rusher is signing with the Lions, according to reports Sunday.

One of the team’s younger running backs, Kerryon Johnson, was wowed by the move.

Peterson brings 14,216 rushing yards with him to a team that has struggled on the ground for many years. He is 1,053 yards behind former Detroit great and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders for fourth on the list.

The Lions have Johnson, Bo Scarbrough, and D’Andre Swift but no one comes close to Peterson his best day. The question is how many of those the former Oklahoma star has left.

Peterson was released by Washington a couple of days ago after two successful seasons there.

Washington Football Team releases Adrian Peterson

At 35, the great Adrian Peterson is looking for a new team.

Out with the old — age-wise — with Ron Rivera and the new regime. The Washington Football Team announced Friday it has released 35-year-old running back Adrian Peterson.

Peterson tweeted an image the day prior of him in his new helmet with the digits 26 on the side as opposed to the old logo.

Peterson joins Derrius Guice (cut after being arrested) and Chris Thompson (with Jaguars) as the top three rushers from 2019 that are no longer with the team. They had 1,281 of Washington’s 1,583 rushing yards in a putrid 3-13 season.

The top rusher left over is quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who had 101 yards.

The current roster at running back has Peyton Barber, rookie Antonio Gibson, J.D. McKissic, and Bryce Love.

Peterson exits Washington after two seasons that saw a renaissance. He rushed for 1,940 yards and 12 touchdowns.

He currently has 14,216 career rushing yards and 111 touchdowns on the ground. He is fifth on the all-time rushing leader list, behind Barry Sanders, Frank Gore, Walter Payton, and Emmitt Smith.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the former Minnesota Vikings star hopes to catch on with another team.

Report: New Orleans Saints’ owner Gayle Benson tests positive for COVID-19

Saints owner Gayle Benson is battling COVID-19.

New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson has tested positive for COVID-19, it was reported Friday.

Per Nola.com:

Benson, 73, is “under daily medical care, and she continues to feel better each day,” said Greg Bensel, the vice president of communications for both the Saints and Pelicans.

Bensel stopped short of detailing what Benson’s symptoms are but said she had not been hospitalized despite the illness and was “doing very well in her recovery” at her home in New Orleans.

“She’s been participating in daily executive calls as well as NFL and NBA owner calls,” Bensel added. “She’s been active.”

The Saints’ coach, Sean Payton tested positive for coronavirus early in the pandemic and recovered.

In a statement, Benson said she thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

Saints practice with name of ‘Jacob Blake’ taped to front of helmets

The New Orleans Saints had the name Jacob Blake taped to the front of their helmets Thursday.

The protests are taking on different forms across the sports landscape. NBA and MLB teams boycotted games. Some NFL teams are skipping practices. And the New Orleans Saints made their statement on the front of helmets while practicing Thursday.

The Saints players wore the name Jacob Blake on tape across the front of their helmets, making another powerful statement on social injustice and how important reforms are needed.

Blake, of course, is the man who was shot seven times in the back by a policeman in Kenosha, WI, earlier this week. Reports are Blake is paralyzed from the waist down.

Multiple teams also called off practices.

Per NFL.com:

The Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans all canceled their practices, while the Arizona Cardinals, who were not scheduled to practice Thursday, announced they would not hold team activities. NFL Network’s James Palmer reported the Denver Broncos decided not to practice following a meeting that lasted over two hours.

The Washington Football Team announced Wednesday night that it would not hold its scrimmage Thursday.

Report: Texans’ Kenny Stills arrested at Breonna Taylor protest

Houston Texans WR Kenny Stills is facing a felony charger after being arrested at a Breonna Taylor protest.

Houston Texans wide receiver Kenny Stills took part in a Breonna Taylor protest Tuesday in Louisville. He was one of 87 people arrested after the event, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Per the paper:

Stills, 28, was entered into the jail’s booking log just before midnight after having been taken into custody earlier in the afternoon, as he and dozens of other protesters marched to the home of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron to demand action against the police officers who shot and killed Breonna Taylor in March.

Stills was charged with intimidating a participant in the legal process, a felony, as well as misdemeanor disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. His arraignment was set for 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Stills’ charges mirror those that 86 other protesters who were arrested Tuesday are facing. More than 100 marched from Ballard High School in Louisville’s East End to the home of Cameron, who protesters have long demanded charge the three Louisville Metro Police officers involved in Taylor’s killing.

Taylor was shot and killed in March by Louisville police serving a no-knock warrant in March. No drugs were found at the Black ER technician’s home. One of the officers involved, Brett Hankison, has been fired, while two others, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, remain on the force.

Stills is with his third NFL team, having also played for the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins. When with Miami, he was a critic of team owner Stephen Ross’ support of President Donald Trump. Stills has knelt during the national anthem before NFL games several times since 2016.

Saints owner rebranding brew away from Dixie Beer name

Saints owner Gayle Benson is rebranding a famous beer company away from its name that has “DIxie” in it.

New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson announced Friday the name of a fabled New Orleans beer will change. It will no longer be called Dixie Beer — and all Dixie branded products will be changed.

Her husband, the late Tom Benson, purchased the brewing company in 2017, which had been shuttered since Hurricane Katrina. Its product had been brewed out of state since the storm. Gayle Benson said they always intended to return production to the city and did so in January.

In a statement, Benson said she wants to make sure the brand represents the entire community. After research and reaching out to community leaders, she said they felt the Dixie brand would be a sign of rebuilding following the storm.

“Since opening, the brewery has been extraordinarily successful in attracting thousands of people to visit New Orleans East and enjoy good food, great beer and good company in a beautiful setting. We have been gratified to see the diversity of our customers who visit from all corners of New Orleans, our region and from around the country,” Benson said.

“We recognize, however, that our nation and community are currently engaged in critical conversations about racism and systemic social issues that have caused immeasurable pain and oppression of our black and brown communities.”

A bit of the history of the brew: Dixie Brewery got its start in 1907, flowing from what would become a landmark facility rising over Tulane Avenue. Surviving Prohibition, it was eventually the last brewery based in New Orleans. The company itself had fallen on hard times before Hurricane Katrina hit, devastating its brewery with flood waters from levee breaches.

The Dixie beer name has long been part of the city’s restaurant and bar culture, lettered into weathered signs around the city and laced into the kind of stories that circulate in bars. Since the Benson acquisition three years ago, followed by a major relaunch, that name has been applied anew everywhere from grocery aisles to billboard-style ads around the Superdome.

One Nola.columnist, Will Sutton chipped in with an interesting anecdote if you want to understand how significant the decision is:

Wendell Pierce, one of the owners of Equity Media, which owns WBOK-1230AM and is a media partner with the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans, was so excited that he interrupted regular station programming to share the good news. He read Benson’s statement and said, “This is major. First, I have to applaud Gayle Benson. This is a demonstration of an evolved, intelligent, respectful woman who is actually showing her grace. This is grace personified.” He said she came to realize that the brand name is offensive.

This marks another move in an interesting direction for a franchise that was jolted by the controversy created by quarterback Drew Brees’ “disrespecting the flag” comments.

Well played, Mrs. Benson

Fifth-year options for NFL Draft class of 2017

Many decisions have been made about fifth-year options for the 2017 NFL Draft first-rounder. Some remain with the deadline May 4.

Busy time for NFL teams and the players they chose in the first round of the 2017 draft. Rookie contracts for NFL draftees are four years long. Contracts for players picked in the first round, however, carry a team option for a fifth year and if a team wishes to use it, the option must be exercised by May 4.
