Why Penn State Will Win

Did the Nittany Lions find its running back to work around?

They haven’t had a lick of luck keeping their backs healthy, but freshman Keyvone Lee carried the offense though the Michigan game with 134 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries – he finally started to get the ball more after running for a score in each of the previous two games.

Penn State is actually moving the ball. It’s good on third downs, the secondary has been fine, and considering this is the worst start in the program’s history, the team hasn’t been all that awful.

Why Rutgers Will Win

Penn State turns the ball over way, way too much.

It starts with an offensive line that isn’t getting the job done in pass protection, and it hasn’t been able to do enough for the running game on a regular basis.

Penn State turned it over eight times in the first five games – going -9 in turnover margin – and it was clean against Michigan.

Rutgers doesn’t have a pass rush, but it’s active, it comes up with a slew of tackles for loss, and it’s good at keeping the turnover margin within range.

The seven takeaways against Michigan State were flashy, and there have been just four forced turnover since, but the team is 2-0 when winning the turnover margin.

What’s Going To Happen

Penn State is still struggling, and this isn’t going to be the layup the program is used to against Rutgers, but the Michigan win will be when the pivot comes.

The Nittany Lions should’ve been the winner against Indiana, they weren’t that awful against Ohio State, and …

They’ve struggled. That was more of a negative momentum thing – combined with the injuries and inconsistencies on the O line – but it’ll struggle through its second win of the season with a running game that takes over early on.

Why Rutgers Will Win

The defensive front continues to keep bringing it in the backfield.

This isn’t a rock of a D – the talent and depth aren’t there – but there are a whole slew of tackles for loss and just enough pressure on the quarterback to be effective.

Purdue doesn’t have a running game to worry about, there’s no pass rush to bug Rutgers, and the O as a whole has been a bit hit-or-miss. On the other side, Rutgers just had a big game through the air.

How big a deal is it that the Scarlet Knights threw for 381 yards in the overtime loss to Michigan? It was just the third 300-yard day in more than four seasons, and they were the most passing yards since throwing for 386 yards against Indiana in 2015.

Purdue has allowed well over 200 yards through the air in every game.

Why Purdue Will Win

Rondale Moore is pretty good.

The NFL first round prospect missed the first three games, but he was back against Minnesota and took off, catching 15 passes for 116 yards for a passing game that keeps on rolling.

The Boilermakers lead the Big Ten isn passing, the offensive line is doing a good job of keeping teams out of the backfield – the O gets the ball out of the hands of the quarterbacks in a hurry – and there aren’t a whole lot of giveaways.

What’s Going To Happen

You think Purdue wants to get back on the field after that against Minnesota?

It was a weak call on a late pass interference penalty that would’ve given Purdue a touchdown – TE Payne Durham did extend his arm, though – but there were several missed opportunities to pull out the win, or at least force overtime.

Rutgers will once again keep bringing the effort for a full four quarters, but the Purdue offense and system will be enough to negate the strengths of the Scarlet Knight D.

It’ll be a fight, but Purdue will be more consistent, and PK JD Dellinger will make amends for last week’s key miss with a big day.

Why Michigan Will Win

So where’s the positive in this mess?

Injuries on the lines aren’t helping, and morale appears to be at rock-bottom – at least that’s the way the team played against Wisconsin – but there are still enough good parts there to turn this around fast.

There’s a chance Wisconsin is just that good, and there’s a chance last week’s disaster was just a one-off bad day.

The passing attack put up the yards against Michigan State and Indiana, there aren’t a slew of giveaways, and when the offense is able to throw, the downfield plays are there.

There’s no Rutgers deep passing attack, there are way too many penalties, and even though the team is better, it’s still just 1-3 and it took seven takeaways against Michigan State to make that happen.

Why Rutgers Will Win

The passing game might not do anything deep, but it’s okay when there aren’t a ton of mistakes.

Noah Vedral isn’t careful enough with the ball – he threw three picks against both Indiana and Illinois – but he also is able to be just enough of a baller to put up a few yards.

He’s still the starter after an up-and-down day against Illinois, and as long as he doesn’t throw picks, the team has a shot.

The Michigan offensive line isn’t a total mess, but there’s no running game for the Scarlet Knights to worry about. The Rutgers D is the best in the Big Ten at getting into the backfield and being a bother, and it’s able to overcome a slew of problems with pressure.

What’s Going To Happen

It seems like the two storied programs that were around when college football got started should have a long history of over 100 matchups beginning around the 1800s, but this is just the seventh meeting ever.

Rutgers won the first one back in 2014, and Michigan has absolutely dominated in the last five.

This might be a down Michigan team, but over the years it has a habit of flipping a switch after rough moments. Look for the offense to get a whole lot more physical, but if the team doesn’t match the energy or Rutgers … uh oh.

Michigan will win, but it’ll be one of those games that keeps all the program’s question marks going – particularly at quarterback.

The running game hasn’t been bad. It’s not dominant, and it’s not making up for the other issues across the board, but it’s been getting progressively better, with 181 yards last week against Minnesota.

The defense is taking the ball away, coming up with a Big Ten-high five over the three games, and the offense needs it. The downfield passing game is the best in the conference – averaging 14.35 yards per completion – and that running game is good enough to win with, and …

Why Rutgers Will Win

Illinois is way too awful in too many areas, starting with the inability to do anything right on either side of the ball on third downs.

The passing game is the most inconsistent in the conference, the lack of third down conversions are leading to the Big Ten-worst 21:05 in time of possession with no ability to go on long marches.

Rutgers is tied with Illinois with eight takeaways – most of them in the win over Michigan State – the pass rush has been a killer with a whole lot of plays behind the line, and the team is playing with more of a spring in its step and more energy. The team is finding ways to be interesting and stay in the fight now, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Rutgers isn’t doing anything offensively.

It might be more interesting on the offensive side this year, and it’s scoring a whole lot more, but after three games last year the O gained 1,059 yards, and this year it has 896.

Fortunately, Illinois doesn’t have the offense to take advantage of the punchless Scarlet Knights, and the defense doesn’t have to worry about any sort of consistent Illini passing game.

It’ll be a whole lot of ugly, but Rutgers will get its second win in an interesting fight.

Why Rutgers Will Win

The defense really has been solid.

Michigan State couldn’t run at all on the Scarlet Knights, and Indiana only cranked up 347 yards of total offense. The seven takeaways against the Spartans made the most splash, but the ability simply get off the field has been the biggest difference.

Last year’s defense allowed teams to connect on 44% of their third down chances, and this year after two games it allowed just 32% so far. Michigan State converted 7-of-17 chances, and Indiana was held to converting 2-of-11 tries.

The pressure into the backfield has been outstanding, there’s a good pass rush, and Justin Fields won’t be able to feel totally comfortable. But …

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Rutgers offense is still a problem.

It’s scoring – it scored 21 points or more pure three times last year and it has already done it twice in two games – but the O managed just 276 yards against Michigan State and followed it up with 247 against Indiana. The talent and ability just aren’t there to keep up with an Ohio State team that’s rolling.

Penn State has a fantastic defense that’s going to end up statistically being among the three best in the Big Ten. It got hit for 526 yards against the Buckeyes. Rutgers is about to get hit for around that many if the OSU O keeps trying.

Justin Fields has been every bit the Heisman talent he’s supposed to be, completing 87% of his passes for 594 yards and six scores with no picks, averaging close to 11 yards per throw. He might not bomb away against the Scarlet Knights, but if he’s just okay, the offense will be fine.

What’s Going To Happen

How much does Ryan Day want to run it up? If he felt awful about a final unnecessary Buckeye touchdown against Nebraska, what will happen against Greg Schiano?

It’ll be a fast start with a few early scoring drives to make this easy, but the Rutgers defense will keep this from getting totally out of hand. However, the offense just won’t be able to do much of anything unless the D comes up with a slew of takeaways that won’t be coming in bunches.
