Tom Brady catches own pass, throws completion to Mike Evans

A Tom Brady pass was batted back to the quarterback, who threw a completion to Mike Evans

This is about as bizarre as it gets.

Tom Brady threw a pass that was batted by the Rams’ Terrell Lewis. The deflection wound up back in the hands of Brady, who quickly threw another pass — on the same play — that went for a completion to Mike Evans.

However, you can’t throw two forward passes on the same play, which caused a penalty flag to be thrown.

The Rams declined the penalty, deciding they would rather have it as fourth-and-2. So, Brady to Evans was an eight-yard completion.

3rd & 10 at TB 34

(12:17 – 4th) (Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass short middle to 12-T.Brady to TB 25 for -9 yards. T.Brady pass short middle to M.Evans to TB 42 for 8 yards (J.Johnson III). Penalty on TB-T.Brady, Illegal Forward Pass, declined. Statistically, no completion for first pass as a result of the declined penalty

The rule book:

Item 1: Illegal Passes. Any other forward pass by either team is illegal and is a foul by the passing team,

(b) For a second forward pass from behind the line, or for a forward pass that was thrown after the ball returned behind the line: Loss of five yards.

Because the penalty did not involve loss of down the Rams actually benefited by declining the penalty and having the Bucs eventually pung

Watch: Jordan Fuller pick of Tom Brady set up Rams’ touchdown

Rams rookie DB Jordan Fuller picked off a Tom Brady pass

Jordan Fuller has been splendid in the Los Angeles Rams’ secondary. The sixth-round pick from Ohio State made another big play Monday night, picking off Tom Brady in the third quarter of the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Not sure who Brady was looking for on the play as the pass went directly to Fuller, who made his first career interception. Fuller returned it 37 yards.

The Rams then marched 37 yards in five plays before Jared Goff found Cam Akers, who scored his first career touchdown. After the Matt Gay PAT, the Rams led, 24-17.

Watch: Rams’ rookie Van Jefferson scores 1st NFL TD

Jared Goff found Van Jefferson for the rookie’s first TD reception in the NFL

The Los Angeles Rams were playing from behind in the second quarter. Jared Goff needed a score to tie the game and he went to a rookie for the play that accomplished it.

Watch as rookie Van Jefferson runs a quick pattern and Goff delivers the ball to the former Florida star in the end zone.

The PAT made it 14-all in what shaping up as a terrific Monday Night Football game.

Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams play host to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The media got around to asking the coach what he thought about the incredible play a while back that saw the Seahawks’ DK Metcalf run down the Arizona Cardinals’ Budda Baker as he headed toward the zone after picking off Russell Wilson.

It sounds like McVay was impressed.

Watch: Dolphins score 2 touchdowns in 75 seconds

The Miami Dolphins scored on a long fumble return against the Los Angeles Rams.

Emmanuel Ogbah separated the ball from Jared Goff with a crushing hit and Andrew Van Ginkel was happy to pick up the gift and take it 78 yards to paydirt in the second quarter of the Miami Dolphins’ game with the Los Angeles Rams.

The strip-sack into a touchdown came plays after Myles Gaskins of Miami had fumbled to set Los Angeles up inside the Dolphins’ red zone.

Ogbah came off the line and went untouched into the Rams’ quarterback, who had the ball jarred from his grasp.

Van Ginkel, a second-year linebacker from Wisconsin, picked up the gift and was off and running.

It is the second-longest fumbled return for a touchdown in Dolphins franchise history. Jason Taylor had an 85-yard return during his Hall of Fame career.

The Dolphins’ Jakeem Grant then took a Johnny Hekker punt 88 yards for the longest punt return in franchise history as the Dolphins grabbed a 21-7 lead in 75 seconds.

Watch: Tua Tagovailoa arrives in style for first NFL start

Tua Tagovailoa makes his first NFL start for the Miami Dolphins.

Tua Tagovailoa will make his first NFL start Sunday as the Miami Dolphins play host to the Los Angeles Rams. The first-round pick out of Alabama paid tribute to his Hawaiian heritage as he arrived for the game.

Adam Schefter of ESPN added some information into why the Dolphins made the surprising move to Tagovailoa away from Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Per ESPN.com:

The Dolphins need to know what they have in Tagovailoa as they enter the 2021 draft with two picks in each of the first two rounds, courtesy of their trade last year that sent left tackle Laremy Tunsil to the Texans.

“That’s definitely a part of it,” one source close to the Dolphins’ thinking told ESPN, regarding Miami’s recent decision to replace popular veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick with Tagovailoa. “Whoever told you that is right.”

… Because they have Houston’s first-round pick, the Dolphins could be in prime position for one of the draft’s top-rated quarterbacks, be it Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State’s Justin Fields or North Dakota’s Trey Lance.
