NFL Super Wild-Card weekend matchups are set

The six Wild-Card round matchups are set.

The trio of AFC and NFC matchups on Super Wild-Card weekend is set, almost.

The question is who will the fifth-seeded Tampa Bay Buccaneers play from the NFC East. It will either be the Washington Football Team or New York Giants playing host to Tom Brady & Co., depending on what happens in the Sunday nighter between Washington and Philadelphia.

A WFT win and it gets the division crown.

Meanwhile, the other NFC matchups will see Chicago at New Orleans and the Los Angeles Rams at the Seattle Seahawks.

The Saints beat the Bears, 26-23 in the regular season.

The Rams and Seahawks will be going a third round as they are NFC West rivals.

In the AFC, there will be an immediate rematch and third go-round for the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. This one will take place at Heinz Field.

The other two Wild-Card games will see the Indianapolis Colts at Buffalo and the streaking Baltimore Ravens at the AFC South champion Tennessee Titans.

The times and dates will be announced by the league once the NFC East is settled and everything else takes shape with networks.

Watch: Rams’ Troy Hill takes pick back 84 yards for a touchdown

Troy Hill sent the Rams into halftime with a lead after an 84-yard Pick-6

The Rams need all sorts of help from their defense as the offense is moving against the Arizona Cardinals in Los Angeles on Sunday.

John Wolford is doing fine, running for nearly 50 yards and moving the offense. However, it can’t find the end zone.

He got a huge boost before the half when Troy Hill picked off Chris Streveler, in for an injured Kyler Murray, and returned it 84 yards for a score. The PAT made it 12-7 as LA needed a win to be in the playoffs or a Bears’ loss.

The Rams had gotten a safety earlier when the Cardinals were flagged for offensive holding in the end zone.

Tony Romo off Cardinals-Rams due to COVID-19 protocols

COVID-19 protocols will keep Tony Romo out of the broadcast booth for Week 17

The week has been besieged by players and coaches who will miss Week 17 of the NFL season due to COVID-19 protocols.

Now, via a CBS Sports announcement, comes news Jim Nantz won’t have Tony Romo by his side as the Arizona Cardinals meet the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

The culprit? COVID-19 protocols, of course.

CBS did not say whether Romo tested positive or was exposed to someone who did.

He will be replaced by Boomer Esiason, who usually is on the NFL Today panel.

John Wolford: A hero will rise for the Rams!

John Wolford might get the start for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday in a must-win. Could two throws from his AAF days be why?

Arguments built on small samples sizes are bad.

Arguments condensing an already small sample size into two plays are worse.

But that is what I am going to attempt here today as I introduce you to John Wolford, the new starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams and their hope for securing a playoff spot in the season finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

Now, I cannot claim to be the world’s foremost expert on the former Wake Forest quarterback and one-time AAF standout. That title is held by the brilliant Mina Kimes who is more than prepared for this moment in NFL history:

So I’ll leave the heavy lifting to Mina. But the news that Jared Goff’s thumb injury has the Rams looking to Wolford did drive me to turn on some AAF games from last season. (As an aside, YouTube basically has every AAF game from the now-defunct league if you’re ever bored, looking to fall asleep, or needing to study a sudden starting quarterback in Week 17 of a strange and bizarre NFL season).

It did not take long for me to craft a case, flimsy as it may be, that Sean McVay might see something in Wolford.

We have seen over the years that teams have found perhaps the “blueprint” for stopping McVay’s offense. Yes, that word gets thrown around far too often. I mean, thinking you have a blueprint for success in the NFL when we’re really talking about loosely-controlled chaos is a fool’s errand. But dating back to 2018 one of the ways defenses have approached the Rams is to ignore the pre-snap motion and eye candy, play zone coverage in the secondary (often quarters/Cover 4) and force Goff to make reads and throws in the pocket. It started with Matt Patricia and the Detroit Lions – of all teams – back in 2018 and continued through Super Bowl LIII, and to this day.

In fact, before Super Bowl LIII I highlighted some of these issues with a piece focusing on how the Patriots could “exploit the hesitation” from Goff, and earlier this season I highlighted Goff’s struggles against such “middle-of-the-field coverages” in this video breakdown.

So when I turned on Wolford’s first AAF game, a start against the Salt Lake Stallions where he completed 18 of 29 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns, I quickly saw a play that made me do this:

This is the play in question:

The Stallions play Quarters technique to one side of the field, and as luck would have it the Hotshots have a Quarters-beater called. The inside receiver runs a deep curl which the safety is forced to cover, and that creates a good opportunity for the outside receiver’s post route working against a cornerback using outside leverage.

Wolford sees it and does not hesitate to throw the post, as you can see from the replay angle:

If you find this play on YouTube you’ll be treated to a lovely discussion of Cover 4 versus Cover 6 or “quarter-quarter-half” from the commentators in the booth.

Wolford notched his first AAF touchdown against a similar coverage, although this looks more like a bust from the safety:

Yet again, you see Wolford read the coverage, hit his drop and attack the middle-of-the-field open coverage with zero hesitation. Here’s the replay:

Wolford also shows nice pocket movement here as he steps around the edge pressure before making a good throw to the post route for the TD. Oh and if you look this play up on YouTube you’ll be treated to a comparison to, and I kid you not, Drew Brees. But stylistically on this play, I can almost see it…

Now, a few things. Is this an absurdly small sample size? Absolutely. Do I believe McVay and the Rams are looking at these two plays as the reason to trust Wolford? Gosh I hope not! But are these the kinds of plays the Rams need their quarterback to hit given the coverage looks they are seeing from opposing defenses? Yes. Has Goff hit these kinds of throws consistently? No.

So, there’s at least that Rams fans. Now go read everything Mina has to say about Wolford.

Report: Jared Goff could miss Rams’ regular-season finale with dislocated thumb

Jared Goff has an injured thumb on his throwing hand and it concerns the Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are not a lock to make the playoffs after losing to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Adding injury to insult, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports starting quarterback Jared Goff injured the thumb on his right throwing hand and could miss the regular-season finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

There are ways the Rams could not secure a playoff spot should they lose to the Cardinals. The Chicago Bears, who finish against the Green Bay Packers, also figure into the Wild-Card playoff spot scenario.

John Wolford is the other QB on the Rams’ roster.

What NBA player’s jersey did Russell Wilson wear?

Russell Wilson arrived at SoFi Stadium for the Rams game in style

The Seattle Seahawks are visiting the Los Angeles Rams in a must-win NFC West clash for both teams.

Russell Wilson arrived in style for a game in Los Angeles, donning a Kobe Bryant jersey.

Not just any jersey, one with “8” on the front and “24” and Bryant on the back, offering tribute to the late, great Los Angeles Lakers star.

Not the first time Wilson has paid homage.

Anatomy of a Rematch: How the Rams attacked Seattle through the air in Week 10

Mark Schofield dives into the film to look at how the Los Angeles Rams attacked the Seahawks through the air in their Week 10 win.

With the NFC West on the line the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams will square off in a rematch of their Week 10 on Sunday. In that game, the Rams emerged victorious as quarterback Jared Goff completed 27 of 37 passes for 302 yards and did not throw an interception.

The Seahawks this season have been a heavy zone coverage team, playing over a mixture of Cover 3, Cover 2 and Cover 4. Many teams utilize Cover 4 when playing the Rams, as a way to neutralize all the pre-snap movement from the Rams offense and take away the bevy of crossing routes that Sean McVay calls for Goff.

In that Week 10 matchup, however, the Rams found ways to make plays against those zone coverage looks, attacking their coverage rules and showing Seattle what they were looking for, but with minor variations. In this video we’ll look at three different ways the Rams attacked Seattle’s zone coverages through the air back in Week 10:

New York Jets stagger Los Angeles Rams for their first win

The Los Angeles Rams somehow came up empty against the New York Jets, who won their first game.

Disbelief. Shock. What else can you say when you hear the New York Jets won their first game of 2020, stunning the Los Angeles Rams, 23-20, at SoFi Stadium.

Did the Rams get caught looking ahead to next week’s game with the Seahawks? They got caught cold by the New York Jets, who surged to a 20-3 lead and held on for dear life.

The final dagger came when Frank Gore, all 37 years of him, caught a short pass and turned it into a first down at the two-minute warning.

That left the Rams without any timeouts and all the Jets had to do was have Sam Darnold take knees. Somehow, that happened without a turnover and the Jets are 1-13.

Remember, this is the same Jets team that lost to Seattle last week, 40-3, and had to head to the East Coast before returning to the West Coast,

The joy you heard probably was coming from Jacksonville, where the Jaguars realized they have company at 1-13 as teams battle for the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

And, if you were wondering where things stand between the Jets and Jags:

In situations where teams finished the previous season with identical records, the determination of draft position is decided by strength of schedule — the aggregate winning percentage of a team’s opponents. The team that played the schedule with the lowest winning percentage will be awarded the higher pick.

Jaguars opponents currently have a .554 strength of schedule compared to .593 for the Jets’ foes. That gives the Jags the edge for now.

After beating the Rams with former USC star Sam Darnold, who needs Trevor Lawrence?

Watch: Jalen Hurts with fantastic touchdown run

Jalen Hurts with a big-time run for a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals

Jalen Hurts has injected life into the Philadelphia Eagles with his arm and his legs.

The latter was used to help Philly tie Arizona at 26 on Sunday.

Hurts takes off and somehow bulls his way to the end zone through the Cardinals’ defense.

And, of course, the PAT was missed to the game remained deadlocked.
