Jon Jones hired one of the sharpest advisors in boxing, longtime analyst says

Richard Schaefer has the ability to make a big impact in helping Jon Jones deal with UFC president Dana White.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] made some waves when it came out he had parted ways with his longtime management team.

He made some more when he brought on Richard Schaefer, a former CEO at Golden Boy, to be his new advisor. And that move, according to longtime boxing analyst Michael Rosenthal, the managing editor at Boxing Junkie, was a good one.

“Richard’s one of the two or three smartest guys I’ve run into,” Rosenthal told MMA Junkie Radio on Thursday. “… He comes from a banking family, but he’s learned a lot (in boxing) and he’s one of the sharpest guys in this business. He hasn’t worked in MMA, but maybe that doesn’t matter.”

Jones, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, has run into a logjam with UFC president Dana White in terms of negotiating a fight in his move up to heavyweight. It was expected Jones would challenge new champ Francis Ngannou for the title, but Jones’ financial hopes didn’t seem to jibe with White’s.

Now Jones appears to be set to wait upwards of a year while he bulks up to heavyweight. But with Schaefer on his side helping guide the negotiation, maybe that timeline could change – particularly since White appears to like him.

“Dana respects Richard, and I understand why,” Rosenthal said. “He’s made a lot of deals behind the scenes. He knows how to negotiate. He knows how to work with people.”

Check out the video above to hear Rosenthal break down the Jones-Schaefer-White situation, as well as the current boxing landscape – including Triller.

Alesha Zappitella’s goals include becoming Invicta FC’s first double-champion

Alesha Zappitella’s goals go far beyond defending her atomweight title at Invicta on AXS TV.

[autotag]Alesha Zappitella[/autotag]’s goals go far beyond defending her title on Friday.

Zappitella (8-2-1), who claimed the Invicta FC atomweight belt with a fourth-round finish of Ashley Cummins this past September, is set for her first title defense when she meets Jessica Delboni in the co-main event of Invicta on AXS TV, which takes place at the Police Athletic League in Kansas City, Kan. The two-hour main card will air on AXS TV and Invicta FC’s YouTube channel at 8 p.m. ET.

With the strawweight title currently vacant, Zappitella wants to make history with Invicta FC. Not only that, the 26-year-old is also eyeing another promotion’s titleholder, Rizin FF super atomweight champion Ayaka Hamasaki, as she aims to cement herself as the greatest atomweight in the sport.

“Past this fight, I have a couple of things I want to do,” Zappitella told MMA Junkie Radio. “I want to become the first ever Invicta champ-champ. There’s never been one of them, and the 115-pound belt is vacant, so I would love to fight for the 115-pound belt. The next thing I want to do is I want to prove that I am absolutely the best atomweight in the world. So, with that being said, I want Invicta to fly out Ayaka Hamasaki to come and fight me in my cage.”

Zappitella said that ONE Championship has also expressed interest in having her participate in their upcoming atomweight grand prix, but “Half Pint” says her loyalty lies with Invicta and the promotion’s president, Shannon Knapp. Zappitella likes her growth with the company and thinks it’s the perfect home for her career.

“I was actually contacted by ONE to be in the grand prix, but if I’m being completely honest, Shannon cares about me,” Zappitella said. “She cares about all of her fighters, and I completely believe in absolutely everything that Invicta is doing, and I think that Invicta is the place to be if you’re a woman – especially a 105er.

“I want to get famous in America so being signed to ONE really didn’t seem like the smartest decision for me. I’m going to ride it out, and I’m going to just build my legacy in Invicta and then go on to work for Invicta afterwards. I want to be an interviewer, a broadcaster, a commentator, so I really think Invicta is the place that I can do it.”

Arjan Bhullar eyes double-champ status at ONE Championship – but not until he defends heavyweight title

Newly crowned ONE heavyweight champion Arjan Bhullar has aspirations of hoisting up two belts someday.

Newly crowned ONE heavyweight champion [autotag]Arjan Bhullar[/autotag] has aspirations of hoisting up two belts someday.

Bhullar (11-1) recently made history by becoming the first fighter of Indian descent to win a title in mixed martial arts when he stopped Brandon Vera in the second round to claim the heavyweight belt at “ONE Championship: Dangal” in Singapore.

Having competed at heavyweight for his entire pro career, Bhullar is now seeking a move down to light heavyweight to chase after a second belt – but not until he’s defended his heavyweight title first.

“I’m always looking for another challenge and to make history and grow,” Bhullar told MMA Junkie. “Vera tried to go down and was unsuccessful, so there’s never been anyone from ONE that’s gone down and got the light heavyweight belt. Definitely that’s on the radar, and that’s something that I would want to do.

“Immediately, no. I want to defend this, and we actually got some stuff cooking in the oven with pro wrestling, as well, but that is on the radar. I’m always looking for new and exciting stuff, rather than rinse and repeat.”

[lawrence-related id=610684]

When Bhullar made the walk against Vera, it was his first fight since October 2019, marking the longest time away from competition since childhood for the lifelong wrestler. Currently riding a four-fight winning streak, the 35-year-old Bhullar aims to be an active champion.

“This is the longest layoff I’ve had of my entire life since I was a little toddler from competition,” Bhullar said. “I’m not used to sitting around for a year, year-plus. I want to compete, so that’s going to happen, and that’s going to happen quick. I just want to enjoy this for now. I finally got out of quarantine, and get some fresh air and sunlight, and we’ll get back into it.”

Anthony Johnson breaks down his ‘piss-poor’ and ‘dumbass performance’ at Bellator 258

After four years away, Anthony Johnson returned Friday with one of the biggest knockouts of many on an already packed highlight reel.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – After four years away from the sport, Anthony Johnson returned Friday with one of the biggest knockouts of many on an already packed highlight reel.

Johnson (23-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) shut down Jose Augusto (7-3 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) 90 seconds into the second round with one massive right hand and a quick follow-up on the canvas in the Bellator 258 co-main event. And with it, Johnson punched his ticket to the light heavyweight tournament semifinal round, where he’ll get a shot at current champion Vadim Nemkov.

Yet after the fight, Johnson had one idea on repeat at the post-fight news conference: He thought his performance was no good because Augusto dropped him in the first round and nearly finished him before Johnson mounted a comeback.

“(I’m) pissed,” Johnson told MMA Junkie after the fight. “He hit me. I don’t mind getting hit, but I got hit and I dropped. I mean, what the hell? That ain’t me. That was a piss-poor performance on my part. I’m better than that. I know I’m better than that. You guys know I’m better than that. I’m not going to call it a lucky shot – he hit me. He caught me slipping. He got in on me. That was all on me and I’m pissed at myself that he hit me.

“I’m getting mad at myself. That was a dumbass performance.”

But that “dumbass performance” culminated in a knockout, even though Johnson had to go through plenty of first-round trouble against Augusto at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Augusto, who filled in for Yoel Romero in the fight on short notice, likely broke his right hand in the first round against Johnson. But he continued fighting and hurt Johnson in the opening round. In his post-fight interview with John McCarthy on Showtime, Johnson said he didn’t remember getting dropped by Augusto when he saw the replay.

But regardless, his win in the second punched his ticket to the next stop in the tournament: a semifinal bout against light heavyweight champion Vadim Nemkov.

“Fighting Nemkov, though – that’s an honor to fight him,” Johnson said. “He’s a beast. He’s the most complete fighter of this tournament. He can strike, can wrestle, can submit people fairly easy. I’m a big fan of his.

“You’re only as good as your last performance. If I fight Nemkov, I definitely have to be better than I was tonight – and I will. I know that.”

Merab Dvalishvili ‘would love to fight’ Marlon Moraes after UFC mentioned it as possibility

Merab Dvalishvili is riding a six-fight winning streak and wants to keep his momentum going against a big name.

[autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag] says the UFC is ready to offer him a former title challenger for his next fight.

Dvalishvili (13-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC) notched his sixth consecutive win when he defeated Cody Stamann this past Saturday at UFC on ESPN 23, and he wants a step up in competition. He stated in the post-fight news conference that he’s targeting either Sean O’Malley, who’s been booked since, or former champions T.J. Dillashaw, Jose Aldo, Cody Garbrandt, and Dominick Cruz.

Looking to make a quick turnaround, Dvalishvili said the UFC came to him with not a former UFC champion, but a former title challenger in [autotag]Marlon Moraes[/autotag] (23-8-1 MMA, 5-4 UFC).

“They mentioned Marlon Moraes, and I would love to fight with him,” Dvalishvili told MMA Junkie Radio. “Big respect, he’s a great fighter, he’s a knockout artist, he submitted (Raphael) Assuncao. They mentioned his name, but who knows? Maybe he doesn’t want to fight me because he’s a big name. He’s a former WSOF champion, and he fought for the title against Henry Cejudo. He has a big name, so I don’t know.”

[lawrence-related id=607629]

Dvalishvili, who fought three times in 2020, is aiming for another active year. He’s right back in the gym and looking to compete against a top contender within the next couple of months.

“I was gonna go on a 10-day vacation to my country, but I’m not going,” Dvalishvili said. “I’m staying here, and I’m training, and I’ll be ready if anything (happens). I’m healthy, no injuries, and I wan to fight. I should fight somebody who’s a big name because now six straight wins, and I should be 8-0 in the UFC.”

He continued, “I may fight soon, maybe one month, two months. I just want to be ready.”

Video: How can Kamaru Usman not rematch Colby Covington next?

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman apparently prefers another fight over a rematch with Colby Covington.

Welterweight champion [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag], coming off an emphatic knockout of Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261, is in the middle of carving out quite a legacy for himself.

Usman’s second victory over Masvidal represented his fourth consecutive title defense since claiming the belt from Tyron Woodley in March 2019 – a list that also includes [autotag]Colby Covington[/autotag] and Gilbert Burns. Many people believe Usman’s next move is clear: a rematch with Covington, who was up on at least one judges’ scorecard before he was TKO’d late in the fifth round in one of the most exciting fights of 2019. Since then, Usman has three more title defenses, while Covington rebounded to stop Woodley in their September 2020 clash.

Behind No. 1 contender Covington are fighters who Usman already has defeated (Burns, Masvidal and Leon Edwards) or who haven’t quite entered the conversation for title contention – until now, as it appears Usman would entertain fights with either Michael Chiesa or Vicente Luque.

Are these fresh matchups the way to go, or is the Covington rematch a must? The “Spinning Back Clique” panel of “Gorgeous” George Garcia, Brian “Goze” Garcia and Nolan King broke it down with host John Morgan.

Video: Jiri Prochazka all the rage after UFC on ESPN 23 knockout. Title shot automatic?

The UFC light heavyweight division was put on notice this past Saturday at UFC on ESPN 23: Jiri Prochazka is the real deal.

The UFC light heavyweight division was put on notice this past Saturday at UFC on ESPN 23: [autotag]Jiri Prochazka[/autotag] is the real deal.

Prochazka, a former Rizin FF champion making just his second UFC appearance, scored a “Knockout of the Year” contender by obliterating ex-title challenger Dominick Reyes with a spinning elbow in the second round of their main event. It was, without a doubt, a statement-making performance from the 28-year-old Prochazka (28-3-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) who has a strong case for a title shot.

Unfortunately for him, champion Jan Blachowicz is booked to defend his title Sept. 4 against Glover Teixeira. If he waited for his shot, it likely wouldn’t be until the end of the year that we’d see Prochazka compete again.

So, should he wait, or should he stay active and take another fight – but against whom? The “Spinning Back Clique” panel of “Gorgeous” George Garcia, Brian “Goze” Garcia and Nolan King broke it down with host John Morgan.

Video: The most impressive UFC 261 title fight performance was …

Did Kamaru Usman, Rose Namajunas or Valentina Shevchenko leave the biggest impression on your coming out of UFC 261?

UFC 261 gave us three championship fights in which the winners all delivered impressive finishing performances.

In the main event, welterweight champion [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] knocked out Jorge Masvidal with a vicious right hand to retain his title. In the co-headliner, [autotag]Rose Namajunas[/autotag] became a two-time strawweight champ after she dropped Zhang Weili with a beautiful head kick and finished her with some follow-up punches. And in the night’s third title fight, women’s flyweight champ [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] continued her reign of dominance by beating Jessica Andrade with a grappling display that led to a ground-and-pound finish.

[lawrence-related id=606278,606317,606319]

There’s no question each of those performances was impressive. But which one was most impressive? The “Spinning Back Clique” panel of “Gorgeous” George Garcia, Brian “Goze” Garcia and Farah Hannoun broke it down with host John Morgan.
