2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic best value prop bets for 3 golfers

3 golfers to profit on at the 2022 Rocket Mortage Classic, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Golf Club hosts the 4th 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic starting Thursday in the penultimate PGA Tour event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin. Below, we tab the best value prop bets on a trio of golfers among the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Reigning champion Cameron Davis (No. 67 in Golfweek/Sagarin rankings) won last year’s tournament in a playoff against Troy Merritt (No. 61) and Joaquin Niemann (No. 24). Other notable golfers include Sunday’s 3M Open winner Tony Finau (No. 25) and Patrick Cantlay (No. 2).

The 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic will be played at the Detroit Golf Club’s North course, which is a par 72 with a 7,370 yardage, and the winner takes home $1.512 million of the $8.4 million pool.

2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic best bets

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 7:37  p.m. ET.

Chris Kirk

Kirk is the top-ranked golfer per my numbers and we’re getting a good price for him at the Classic because he missed back-to-back cuts at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open Championship across the pond.

Otherwise, the 40th-ranked Kirk had 6 top-20 finishes in his previous 11 tournaments, including 4 top-10 finishes with a 5th-place finish at the 2022 PGA Championship.

Strokes Gained (SG): Around-the-green (ARG) play a bigger factor in a golfer’s scoring at the Rocket Mortgage Classic than most PGA Tour events because the greens are harder to hit than the tour average. Kirk is 3rd in SG: ARG over his last 50 rounds, per FantasyNational.com.

Also, your wedge-game needs to be on-point at the Detroit Golf Club since there are a lot of 2nd shots on the North course and Kirk is 8th in this field at Proximity: 100-125 (FantasyNational.com).

Finally, Kirk has the 4th-best SG: Total in the Classic field with a 12th-place finish in 2021 and a 21st in 2020.

  • $12.50 for winner (+5000) to earn a $625 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+1200) to earn a $150 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+600) to earn a $150 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+280) to earn a $280 profit

[tipico]

Russell Henley

Henley’s iron- and wedge-games are insane and rank 1st in this field for both SG: Approach and Proximity: 75-100 over the last 50 rounds, according to FantasyNational.com.

The reason Henley is going for a modest price is because he missed the cut in his only Rocket Mortgage Classic played (2019) and he’s just 47th in SG: Total over his last 24 rounds.

However, Henley has struggled over that span because those 24 rounds included all 4 majors, THE PLAYERS Champion and Genesis Invitational, which are all very difficult events.

The 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, on the other hand, should be a birdie-fest and Henley is 4th in this field for SG: Total at events with easy scoring conditions and 2nd in SG: Total for comp courses used.

  • $12.50 for winner (+5000) to earn a $625 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+1200) to earn a $150 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+550) to earn a $137.50 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+260) to earn a $260 profit

Cameron Young

Young is one of the top young golfers in the world and he’s 3rd in SG: Total for this field over his last 24 rounds with a 2nd-place finish at The Open Championship, 3rd at the PGA Championship, 2nd at the Wells Fargo Championship and 3rd at the RBC Heritage.

Also, Young has picked up strokes ARG in 8 of his last 10 events and is 1st in this field for both Opportunities Gained and Birdies-or-better Gained. Young has put up some low rounds this season and that’s the type of golfer I’m looking to stake in the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

  • $12.50 for winner (+3000) to earn a $375 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+500) to earn a $62.50 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+270) to earn a $67.50 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+125) to earn a $125 profit

2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

Analyzing the golf odds to win the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

After many players took last week off following the 150th Open Championship in Scotland, several big names are back in the field this week for the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, including Patrick Cantlay and Will Zalatoris. Detroit Golf Club (the North Course) will host the event for the 4th time since it was added to the tour schedule in 2019.

Below, we look at the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Last year’s winner, Cameron Davis, will try to defend his title and is among the favorites with the 5th-best odds to win. Cantlay, the 4th-ranked player in the world, is the betting favorite, followed by Tony Finau, who won the 3M Open Sunday. Max Homa, Cameron Young and Adam Scott are among the other notable names in this week’s field as we inch closer toward the FedExCup playoffs.

Detroit Golf Club isn’t an overly long course, playing around 7,350 yards as a par 72. It typically makes for some easy scoring conditions, with the winning score the last 3 years being 18-under, 18-under and 25-under. It has wide fairways which puts more emphasis on approach shots rather than accuracy off the tee.

Rocket Mortgage Classic – Expert picks

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 10:38 a.m. ET.

Will Zalatoris (+1500)

Zalatoris seems to thrive when conditions are difficult, which is why he performs so well in the majors. But he can also go really low thanks to his excellent iron play, knocking approaches close consistently. He came in 77th last year in his tournament debut, but Zalatoris’ ball-striking typically keeps him in contention more often than not.

Davis Riley (+4000)

Riley will be looking to bounce back from a missed cut at the 3M Open last week, and his debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic is a great opportunity for him to do so. He’s been one of the better iron players on tour this season, despite slipping to 64th in Strokes Gained: Approach. I like his chances this week after making 8 straight cuts and finishing in the top 10 three times prior to last week’s slip-up.

[tipico]

Rocket Mortgage Classic picks – Contenders

Russell Henley (+6000)

Henley has faded a bit this season, finishing outside the top 40 in his last 5 events. But he also hasn’t played a lot, so his opportunities have been limited. Like Riley, he’s an excellent ball-striker, ranking 3rd on tour in Strokes Gained: Approach and 23rd in total strokes gained.

Cameron Champ (+6000)

Champ is a bomber off the tee, and with wider fairways this week, errant tee shots won’t cost him as much as some other courses. After missing the cut 5 starts in a row, he tied for 16th last week at the 3M Open. He should keep up things up this week in a tournament he’s finished T-12 before.

Rocket Mortgage Classic picks – Long shot(s)

Harris English (+10000)

English missed most of the season due to injury, sitting out from February to the middle of June. But he’s back now and has made the cut in 3 of his last 4 starts – including a T-19 at the Travelers Championship. Now that he’s knocking some rust off, English could find himself in contention this week where the scoring conditions won’t be terribly difficult.

Callum Tarren (+10000)

Tarren fired a 63 in Round 2 of the 3M Open and wound up finishing T-7, his 2nd straight top-25 finish. He was in contention at the John Deere Classic where he tied for 6th, and he also played well at the U.S. Open. This might be the week he breaks through and pushes to win his 1st tour event at age 31.

2022 3M Open final-round odds, golfers to watch

Analyzing the golf odds entering the final round to win the 2022 3M Open in Blaine, Minn.

The 2022 3M Open may be lacking for big names, but not for quality golf. Three rounds are in the book and 10 golfers are at 10-under-par or better. Below, we look at the 2022 3M Open odds entering Sunday’s final round of the 4th tournament being played in Blaine, Minn. Check back throughout the season for our PGA Tour picks, predictions and bets.

Scott Piercy, who opened at +10000 to win, shot a 5-under 66 at rain-soaked TPC Twin Cities on Saturday in a round that was delayed more than 6 1/2 hours to take a 4-stroke lead at 18-under 195 on the course (7,431 yards, par 71). Piercy is the No. 208 player in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

Pre-tournament favorite Tony Fina (+1200 before the opening round) is tied for 3rd at 13-under. Defending champion Cameron Champ, who won last year at 15-under 269, is tied for 41st at 3-under after rounds of 75-68-67.

2022 3M Open – Final pairing

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:31 a.m.  ET.

Scott Piercy (-140)

It’s the 6th time the 43-year-old pro has held at least a share of the 54-hole lead, and he’s won 2 of those events. Piercy, who will try for his 5th career title and first since 2018, take s 4-shot lead into the final round after rounds of 65-64-66.

Emiliano Grillo (+500)

The 29-year-old pro from Argentina will need to make up some ground to win his 2nd tour title. He fired a 67 Saturday, which included an eagle on the par-5 6th hole for the 2nd straight day, to go with rounds of 67-65 for 14-under 199.  The No. 222-ranked player opened at +5000 too win.

Doug Ghim (+900)

The 26-year-old Illinois native starts 5 shots back in his quest for his 1st tour title at 13-under after rounds of 67-68-65. The 175th-ranked Ghim opened at +9000 to win.

[tipico]

2022 3M Open – In the hunt

Before the final group tees off at 12:35 p.m. ET, here are 2 other players to watch as they try to chase down the leader.

Tony Finau (+500): The pre-tournament favorite starts at 13-under after rounds of 67-68-65. He’s the 32nd-ranked player in Sagarin’s rankings.

Tom Hoge (+2000): He’ll start 6 shots back at 12-under 201 after rounds of 67-68-66. The 130th-ranked Hoge opened at +9000.

2022 Open Championship – Props update

Before the tournament started, we mentioned a few prop bets worth considering a play on. Let’s take a look at 2 of them.

J.T. Poston (+900 to make top 5): The 165th-ranked golfer is tied for 11th place at 9-under after rounds of 71-69-64.

Brice Garnett (+400 to make top 20): The 263rd-ranked golfer is tied for 16th place at 7-under after rounds of 67-71-68.

2022 3M Open prop bet picks and PGA Tour predictions

Analyzing the odds for the 2022 3M Open with PGA Tour picks and predictions for the top prop bets.

The PGA Tour is back in Minnesota this week for the 3M Open, which will be played at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn. It’s the 4th year of this event, which joined the PGA Tour schedule in 2019. Cameron Champ won this event last year and will be in the field to defend his title

Below, we search for the best value prop bets among the 2022 3M Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

It’s a somewhat weaker field this week, which is to be expected considering we’re only days removed from the Open Championship in Scotland. However, several players who teed it up at St. Andrews will be playing this week in Minnesota, including Tony Finau and Hideki Matsuyama.

Matsuyama is the highest-ranked player in the field in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, coming in at No. 8. Finau ranks 32nd while Maverick McNealy (No. 26) and Sungjae Im (No. 22) are also among the favorites.

3M Open – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 5:27 p.m. ET.

Davis Riley (+550)

Riley has been one of the best ball-strikers on tour this season, ranking 50th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-green. It hasn’t translated to a win yet, but he does have a 2nd-place finish and 5 other top-10s, including 3 top-5s. In a field that’s lacking some firepower, I like Riley’s odds to notch another top-5.

Sahith Theegala (+550)

Theegala has knocked on the door of his 1st win a few times already in his rookie year, finishing 2nd, 3rd and 5th. He’s been playing some of his best golf lately, making 8 straight cuts and finishing no worse than T-34 in his last 3 starts.

J.T. Poston (+900)

Poston has a win and a 2nd-place finish this year, putting together a solid season. He also tied for 28th in this event last year, his 1st appearance in the 3M Open. I like the way he’s been trending and would take him to finish in the top 5 this week on a course that won’t hurt his lack of length too badly.

[tipico]

3M Open – Top-10 picks

Chris Gotterup (+425)

Gotterup’s length isn’t a question, but his accuracy off the tee can be. Already notching 2 top-10s this season, Gotterup could grab another this week if he can keep the ball in the fairway. He tied for 4th at the John Deere Classic 2 weeks ago.

Cameron Davis (+280)

Davis missed the cut in his 1stt start here, but he’s gone T-12 and T-28 in the 2 years since. Very quietly, he’s put together a solid last 2 months of play, making 6 straight cuts with 3 top-10s, including his last 2 starts at the John Deere Classic and Barracuda Championship.

3M Open – Top-20 picks

Brice Garnett (+400)

If you look at Garnett’s recent results, you might get scared off. He missed the cut in 4 straight tournaments before finishing T-16 last week, and has only made the cut 3 times in his last 11 starts. But this is a good time to buy low heading into an event he’s had success in. In 3 starts at the 3M Open, he’s gone T-23, T-26 and T-16.

Maverick McNealy (+125)

This is a safer play for a guy who’s performed well in recent weeks, finishing no worse than T-16 in his last 3 starts. In his 3M Open debut last year, he tied for 16th, so he didn’t have a lot of trouble with the track at TPC Twin Cities.

3M Open – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold.

  • Hideki Matsuyama (-120) vs. Sungjae Im (+100)
  • J.T. Poston (-110) vs. Martin Laird (-110)

I admittedly don’t love many of the matchups this week, but two stand out to me. Im has been struggling lately and hasn’t been playing a lot, either, missing the cut at the U.S. Open and Genesis Scottish Open before finishing T-81 at the Open Championship. He was playing well prior to this recent stretch, but I like the form Matsuyama is in more.

Matsuyama also finished T-7 in his only 3M Open appearance in 2019. Im was T-15 that year, his only time playing the 3M Open.

3M Open – First-round leader

Tony Finau (+3000)

Finau had a good week at the Open, and though he’s the favorite this week at the 3M Open, I don’t like his outright odds (+1200) enough to bet him to win. I’d rather take a shot on him leading after Round 1 at +3000, which is a far better value.

Cameron Champ (+6000)

Champ didn’t have one exceptionally low round when he won this event last year, but he did go 69-67-67-66, so he improved as the week went on. I don’t know if he can hold up for 3 rounds again, but his power makes him a candidate to go low on Thursday and take the 1st-round lead.

More expert prop bet predictions

Group A winner: Sahith Theegala (+400)

Theegala is tied for the longest odds in this group, which features Finau (+250), Matsuyama (+320), Im (+350) and Adam Hadwin (+400). I don’t know if Theegala is going to win this week, but you can play it a little bit safer by taking him to win the group of the top favorites.

2022 3M Open best value prop bets for 3 golfers

3 golfers to profit on at the 2022 3M Open, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

The 4th 2022 3M Open tees off Thursday, July 21 at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota. TPC Twin Cities is a par 71 that plays at 7,431 yards and the winner brings home $1.35 million out of the $7.5 million prize pool.

Below, we tab the best value prop bets on a trio of golfers among the 2022 3M Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

The 3M Open 2021 champion Cameron Champ (No. 233 in Golfweek/Sagarin rankings) returns to defend his title against one of the softest fields for any event on the PGA Tour this season.

Most of the world’s best golfers are taking an off week on the heels of last week’s 150th Open Championship. But, notables in the 156-golfer field include 2021 Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama (No. 8), Sung-Jae Im (No. 16) and Tony Finau (No. 33).

Davis Riley

Riley is one of several impressive rookies this year on the PGA Tour, and that’s saying something. He has 6 top-20 finishes in his last 10 events including 4 top-10s and a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship after losing in a playoff to Sam Burns.

On top of that, Riley is 2nd in my custom stat model and 4th in my mixed model provided by FantasyNational.com. Riley is 1st in Birdies-or-Better Gained (BoB), 5th in Strokes Gained (SG): Par 4, 8th in SG: Off-the-tee (OTT) and 9th in SG: Ball-striking over his last 36 rounds.

Lastly, Riley is 2nd in SG: Total over his last 24 rounds, 10th in SG for both the comp courses used and courses longer than 7,400 yards, according to FantasyNational.com.

  • $12.50 for winner (+2000) to earn a $500 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+550) to earn a $68.75 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+260) to earn a $65 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+125) to earn a $125 profit

Brendan Steele

I’m shopping for OTT for the 3M Open since the 2021 (Champ) and 2019 (former PGA golfer Matthew Wolf) winners are currently 1st and 2nd in driving distance on the PGA Tour. Steele is 1st in SG: OTT in this field and 2nd in Good Drives Gained, per FantasyNational.com.

Steele is playing well coming into the 3M Open, ranking 5th in SG: Total over his last 24 rounds, per FantasyNational.com. This includes impressive finishes at tough courses in competitive fields such as the Memorial (10th), 2022 PGA Championship (9th) and THE PLAYERS Championship (13th)

Furthermore, Steele’s game fits TPC Twin Cities nicely. Steele is 9th in my mixed model, which includes the 7th-best SG: Par 4. In fact, Steele finished 53rd in the 2019 3M Open because he dropped 6.3 strokes on the greens but picked up 8.2 strokes T2G, per FantasyNational.com.

If Steele can just have a decent putting week at TPC Twin Cities, he’ll be a threat to win.

  • $12.50 for winner (+3000) to earn a $375 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+700) to earn a $87.50 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+350) to earn a $87.50 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+125) to earn a $125 profit

[tipico]

Emiliano Grillo

Grillo finished 3rd at the 2020 3M Open and was 2nd in the John Deere Classic earlier this month. The John Deere Classic is also played on an easy-TPC course and has the same “player quality measures” average (minus-0.8) as the 3M Open, according to DataGolf.com.

Furthermore, Grillo has played well at the PGA events that have lower “player quality measure” averages than the 3M Open such as the Puerto Rico Open, Corales Puntacana Championship and the Barbasol Championship.

He finished 11th (2021, 3rd (2020) and 2nd (2015) in 3 of his 5 Puerto Rico Open appearances, 6th at the 2021 Puntacana and 10th at his only Barbasol Championship played in 2015.

Finally, Grillo is 7th in both SG: OTT and SG: T2G at courses longer than 7,400 yards and 1st in Proximity: 200-plus. There are more approach shots longer than 200 yards at this course than at your average PGA event because of all the water hazards forcing golfers to lay up.

  • $12.50 for winner (+5000) to earn a $625 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+1300) to earn a $162.25 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+550) to earn a $137.50 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+240) to earn a $240 profit

2022 3M Open odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

Analyzing the golf odds to win the 2022 3M Open, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

After an absolutely thrilling finish at the 150th Open Championship, won by Cameron Smith thanks to a final-round 64, some of the players who teed it up at St. Andrews will be back in action this week for the 2022 3M Open.  Below, we look at the 2022 3M Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Tony Finau (+1200) is the favorite, followed by Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im (+1500). TPC Twin Cities will host this event once again, the third-to-last tournament before the FedExCup Playoffs.

Maverick McNealy, Adam Hadwin and Cam Davis are among those teeing it up at TPC Twin Cities. The always-exciting Sahith Theegala is also in the field as he seeks his first PGA Tour win. Last year’s winner, Cameron Champ, is back to defend his title in Minnesota.

TPC Twin Cities is a par 71 and plays at 7,431 yards. It has hosted this event the 1st 3 years of the tournament’s existence. It was first played in 2019 when Matthew Wolff won it, still holding the 72-hole tournament record at 263.

Sahith Theegala (+2000)

This feels like a great time for Theegala to come through with his first PGA Tour win. He’s come close already, with a tie for 2nd, 3rd and 5th this season, but he hasn’t yet claimed that elusive victory as a rookie. His putter has let him down too many times this year, but he’s coming off a strong week at the Open and has made cuts in each of his last 8 starts.

J.T. Poston (+3000)

Poston missed the cut at the Open but only by 2 shots after shooting 73 in each of his 2 rounds at St. Andrews. That came after a T-2 at the Travelers Championship and a win at the John Deere Classic, a solid 2-week stretch for Poston. TPC Twin Cities doesn’t require players to bomb it off the tee, which bodes well for Poston (115th in driving distance).

His putter is red hot and I think that’ll continue this week.

[tipico]

3M Open picks – Contenders

Chris Gotterup (+4000)

Gotterup has only played 6 events this season but he’s made the cut in 4 of those and finished in the top 10 twice – including at the John Deere Classic 2 weeks ago. He can fill it up in a hurry, shooting 17-under in the John Deere Classic, so a birdie fest is something that suits Gotterup well.

He needs to keep the ball in the fairway because he can absolutely bomb it off the tee, and his putter has to be better than it has been.

Doug Ghim (+7000)

Ghim has been a bit up and down lately, finishing T-16 at the Scottish Open before getting cut at the Barracuda Championship last week. He also notched a T-18 last month in the RBC Candian Open, one of his 3 top-25 finishes.

He’s certainly not one of the longest players on tour, but he’s tied for 54th in driving accuracy and ranks 49th in Strokes Gained: approach the green.

3M Open picks – Long shot

Brice Garnett (+10000)

Garnett is a horse for this course, finishing T-16, T-26 and T-23 in his 3 starts in this event. That’s the logic behind picking him as a long shot who could contend. He’s also coming off a T-16 at the Barracuda Championship, snapping a streak of four straight missed cuts following a T-15 at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

2022 Open Championship final-round odds, golfers to watch

Analyzing the golf odds entering the final round to win the 2022 Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Three rounds are in the book at the 2022 Open Championship and with an elite field for the season’s final major it’s a packed leaderboard as expected. Below, we look at the 2022 Open Championship odds entering Sunday’s final round of the 150th tournament, being played for the 30th time on the Old Course  at St. Andrews. Check back throughout the season for our PGA Tour picks, predictions and bets.

Pre-tournament favorite Rory McIlroy (+900 before the opening round) is tied with Viktor Hovland (+5000 to start), at 16-under 200. Both golfers shot 6-under 66 Saturday to open a 4-shot lead entering the final round at the Old Course, which plays 7,313 yards as a par 72. McIlroy is the No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings while Hovland is 12th.

Defending champion Collin Morikawa, who won last year at 15-under 265 at Royal St. Georges, missed the cut after rounds of 73-72.

2022 Open Championship – Final pairing

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at Saturday 11:15 p.m.  ET.

The Open Championship will be contested at Royal Liverpool in 2023 and at Royal Troon in 2024.

Rory McIlroy (-125)

The 33-year-old pro will try for his 5th major title and his first in 8 years. McIlroy has 21 wins on the PGA Tour, including 2 this season and 7 top-10 finishes. He and Hovland start Sunday’s final round with 4-stroke lead after rounds of 66-68-66. His Saturday round included an eagle on the 10th when he holed out from a fairway bunker.

Viktor Hovland (+200)

The 24-year-old pro from Norway is in position to challenge for his 1st major title. The 3-time tour winner, including 1 this year, carded 4 consecutive birdies on the front 9 to highlight his 3rd-round, bogey-free 66 to go with a 68-66 start. He and McIlroy are at 16-under 2000.

2022 Open Championship – In the hunt

Before the final group tees off at 9:50 a.m. ET, here are 3 players to watch as they try to chase down the leader.

Cameron Smith (+1000): The 2nd-round leader is 4 back at 12-under after rounds of 67-64-73. The 7th-ranked player in Sagarin’s rankings opened at +3000.

Cameron Young (+2000): The PGA Tour rookie starts 4 shots back at 12-under 204 after rounds of 64-69-71. The 76th-ranked player opened at +10000.

Scottie Scheffler (+2000): The Masters champ will have to come back from 5 shots down after rounds of 68-68-69. The 3rd-ranked player opened at +1500.

2022 Open Championship – Props update

Before the tournament started, we mentioned a few prop bets worth considering a play on. Let’s take a look at 2 of them.

Xander Scahuffele (+180 to make top 10): The 6th-ranked golfer is tied for 24th place at 5-under after rounds of 69-70-72.

Tony Finau (+185 to make top 20): The 33rd-ranked golfer is tied for 55th  place at 2-under after rounds of 73-71-70.

Tiger Woods: 2022 Open Championship prop bet picks and predictions

Analyzing Tiger Woods’ odds and prop bets for the 2022 Open Championship with PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Tiger Woods played the first 2 majors of the year before skipping the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. He’ll tee it up this week in the Open Championship, which is very likely to be his final official start of the season. Below, we break down Tiger Woods’ 2022 Open Championship odds and prop bets and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

The Old Course at St. Andrews is a course he’s won on, claiming the Open Championship in 2000 and 2005. So he knows how to make his way around this track, which is very flat and easy to walk. That gives him a chance to compete against all of the top players in the world, even if he is only playing a limited schedule.

Woods isn’t among the favorites to win, and understandably so. He withdrew in his last start at the PGA Championship and shot 78-78 on the weekend at the Masters, though he did make the cut in both tournaments. Woods has put a lot of time and effort into this championship, which could be his last time playing the Open at St. Andrews.

Tiger Woods’ Open Championship odds and predictions

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. ET.

To win (+7000)

Woods probably has as good a chance to win this week as he did at Augusta. Take that as you will, but it’s a similar story. A course he’s won on multiple times, and one that requires course knowledge and smart shots instead of a bomb-and-gouge approach. I’ll sprinkle on Woods to win, just to have a rooting interest if he plays well. No one wants to miss out on that storyline.

Top-5 finish (+1500)

I’ll pass here after wagering a tiny bit on Woods to win. I just don’t see enough value to take him top-5 instead of to win.

Top-10 finish (+650)

He tied for 6th at the Open in 2018 before missing the cut a year later, and he didn’t play last year. It’s not a bad idea to sprinkle on this wager, too, because even though he might not win, a top-10 is fairly realistic.

Top-20 finish (+300)

A similar thought process as taking Woods for a top-10 finish. He’s probably not sharp enough to win, but a top-20? Why not? He won at St. Andrews in 2000 and 2005, and then tied for 23rd in 2010.

[tipico]

More Tiger Woods’ odds and predictions

Will he make the cut? Yes -140 | No +110

This line has been moving quickly, going from -190 to -140 in a matter of hours. That’s good news because I think he will make the cut, just as he did in the first two majors of the year. And really, who’s going to bet against Tiger at St. Andrews?

Top former winner group (+1300)

The group of former winners is deep, from Rory McIlroy to Louis Oosthuizen, as well as Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry and Collin Morikawa. All of them could win this week, and I think they all have sizable advantages over Woods this week.

Top American finisher (+3000)

I’ll pass here, knowing Morikawa, Spieth, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler could all be in contention. The same goes for Will Zalatoris and Justin Thomas. I’d rather just take Woods to win outright instead of being the top American.

Tiger Woods’ Open Championship first-round odds

  • Leader +7000 (bet $100 to win $7,000)
  • Top American +3000 (bet $100 to win $4,000)
  • Top 5 +1500 (bet $100 to win $1,500)
  • Top 10 +750 (bet $100 to win $750)
  • Top 20 +380 (bet $100 to win $380)

Tiger shot 71 in the first round of the Masters and 74 at the PGA Championship, so he didn’t exactly come out firing in those starts. The benefit of taking Woods’ first-round lines is that fatigue won’t set in like it could on the weekend.

Top-20 is a decent value at +380, knowing it only takes one good round for that bet to cash.

2022 Open Championship best value prop bets for 3 golfers

3 golfers to profit on at the 2022 Open Championship, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

The 150th Open Championship tees off Thursday on the Old Course at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. The winner will receive a record-breaking $2.5 million and the Claret Jug. Below, we tab the best value prop bets on a trio of golfers among the 2022 Open Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

This is the 4th and final major of the PGA season with reigning champion Collin Morikawa (No. 27 in Golfweek/Sagarin rankings) vying to be the 1st back-to-back Open winner since Irishman Pádraig Harrington (ranked 205th) in 2007-08. The Old Course is a par 72 playing at 7,313 yards.

The 156-golfer field includes Masters champion Scottie Schefler (No. 3),  PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas (No. 5) and U.S. Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick (No. 11).

2022 Open Championship best bets

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 5:21   p.m. ET.

Cameron Smith

Let’s buy the dip on Smith, who missed the cut at the 2022 U.S. Open, finished T-48 at the RBC Canadian Open and has a minus-0.62 Strokes Gained (SG) vs. expectations over his last 5 events, per DataGolf.com.

Otherwise, Smith is 4th in the world for total SG this year and 1st in expected PGA Tour victories, according to DataGolf.com.

Smith is among the best putters in the world and ranks 3rd in SG: Approach and 1st in Par 4 Efficiency 350-400 in this field over the last 36 rounds, according to FantasyNational.com. There are 7 par 4s within 350-400 yards at the Old Course.

Lastly, the Open Championship tends to be a birdie-fest. The last 6 Open Championships have an average winning score of 14-under as do the last 5 Open Championships played at St. Andrews. Smith is 3rd in this field for both birdies-or-better and birdies gained over the last 36 rounds.

  • $12.50 for winner (+3000) to earn a $375 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+550) to earn a $68.75 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+300) to earn a $75 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+130) to earn a $130 profit

Will Zalatoris

Zalatoris missing the cut last week at the Genesis Scottish Open stunk, but in reality that’s the most likely reason for Willy Z’s juicy Open Championship odds. He has bounced back from his 2 previous missed cuts with a 5th at the Memorial and 2nd at the PGA Championship.

More importantly, Zalatoris is playing well and his game fits St. Andrews. Zalatoris is 5th in total SG over his last 24 rounds and is gaining more than 2 strokes per round on the field in windy weather conditions for his career, according to FantasyNational.com.

Zalatoris’s putting has been his Achilles heel but that hasn’t been the case in majors. He has gained 4.5 strokes on the greens in the 3 majors this year, per DataGolf.com. Zalatoris is 9th in the field over his last 36 rounds in 3-putt avoidance.

Finally, Zalatoris is 3rd in SG: Total over the last 36 rounds in my custom stat model courtesy of FantasyNational.com with the 2nd-best SG: Ball-striking (BS) and Par 4 Efficiency: 350-400.

  • $12.50 for winner (+3000) to earn a $375 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+550) to earn a $68.75 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+300) to earn a $75 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+135) to earn a $135 profit

[tipico]

Tony Finau

Finau’s performance in majors has been a blemish on his career resume but he’s finished in the top-20 in 4 of his 5 Open Championship appearances, including 2 top-10 finishes.

Finau has been locked in lately. He is 3rd in SG: Total over the last 24 rounds, and top-7 in SG for Off-the-tee, BS, tee-to-green (T2G) and short game, according to FantasyNational.com. Finau has 4 top-10 finishes in his last 7 events and 3 top-5 finishes.

In addition, Finau is 9th in SG: Par 4, 7th in 3-putt avoidance and 4th in Scrambling over the last 36 rounds. SG: Par 4 was used since 14 of the 18 holes at the Old Course are par 4s and scrambling is an important stat for any major.

We are getting a good price on Finau because of his poor track record in majors and this is Finau’s 1st Open at the Old Course. But, Finau’s game is perfect for links-style golf and it wouldn’t be surprising for Finau to win his 1st major and the Claret Jug.

  • $12.50 for winner (+4000) to earn a $500 profit
  • $12.50 for top-5 finish (+750) to earn a $93.75 profit
  • $25 for top-10 finish (+380) to earn a $95 profit
  • $100 for top-20 finish (+200) to earn a $200 profit

2022 Open Championship prop bet picks and PGA Tour predictions

Analyzing the odds for the 2022 Open Championship with PGA Tour picks and predictions for the top prop bets.

The Old Course at St. Andrews will fittingly play host to the 150th Open Championship this week, the year’s fourth and final major. The field goes 156 players deep, as always, featuring all of the biggest names in golf – including Tiger Woods.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets among the 2022 Open Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite (+900) to win this week, and he’s also the No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Jon Rahm is 2nd followed by  Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay and Justin Thomas. Reigning Open champion Collin Morikawa is at No. 27 while the current U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick ranks 11th.

The Old Course (7,313 yards, par 72) features a bunch of shorter par 4s, wide fairways and huge greens that emphasize 3-putt avoidance. Players can get away with wayward tee shots (to an extent), but they must get creative when approaching these undulating greens.

Open Championship – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 5:12 p.m. ET.

Jordan Spieth (+425)

Spieth has as good a record as anyone in this event, with zero missed cuts and 3 top-5s, including a win in 2017. He’s simply a very good links player and has the creativity to pull off tough shots around the greens when he does miss them.

Jon Rahm (+425)

Let’s not forget about Rahm just yet, even though it hasn’t been the banner year that he had in 2021. He’s deadly with his driver, which will make these shorter par 4s much easier for him compared to the field. He just needs to get his putter going.

Tony Finau (+750)

Finau has 1 top-5 to his name in this championship, which came in 2019. However, he’s never finished worse than T-27. He’s coming into this week playing well and he’s shown in the past that he can navigate links courses.

Other T5 contenders (in order from longest odds to shortest):

  • Shane Lowry (+480)
  • Matt Fitzpatrick (+425)
  • Rory McIlroy (+250)

[tipico]

Open Championship – Top-10 picks

Xander Schauffele (+180)

Schauffele has won his last 2 starts, including last week’s Scottish Open. He has short odds to finish in the top 10, but I really like his chances. He tied for 2nd in 2018 and has never missed the cut in the Open.

Will Zalatoris (+300)

Zalatoris hasn’t proved he’s figured out links golf yet, but neither did Morikawa before he won last year. I’ll take his ball striking and suddenly strong putting in majors any day, anywhere. In 7 major starts where he didn’t withdraw, Zalatoris has 6 top-10s. That’s good enough for me.

Robert MacIntyre (+1000)

All Bobby Mac does is make cuts in majors, doing so in all 9 of his starts. No major fits his game better than the Open Championship, either. In 2 appearances he has a T-8 and T-6. At +1000, how can’t you take him to make it 3 times in a row?

Other T10 contenders (in order from longest odds to shortest):

  • Joaquin Niemann (+480)
  • Cameron Smith (+300)

Open Championship – Top-20 picks

Tony Finau (+185)

I’m going back to Finau to finish in the top 20, which he’s done in 5 of his 6 starts in the Open Championship.

Max Homa (+220)

Homa tied for 40th in his Open debut last year, and I think he’ll improve on that finish this time around after performing pretty well at last week’s Scottish Open.

Other T20 contenders (in order from longest odds to shortest):

  • Joo-hyung Kim (+450)
  • Robert MacIntyre (+380)

Open Championship – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold.

Tony Finau (-110) vs. Louis Oosthuizen (-110)

Both players have good records in the Open Championship, but only 1 of them has had even an average season: Finau. Oosthuizen’s odds everywhere are juiced because of the location of the tournament, which is where he’s won once before and lost in a playoff. But his form this year stinks.

Hideki Matsuyama (-110) vs. Viktor Hovland (-110)

Hovland is terrible on and around the greens, whereas Matsuyama does a great job making up-and-down and avoiding 3-putts. Matsuyama hits it a mile high, which doesn’t work well at St. Andrews, but he’ll find a way to navigate the wind if it picks up.

Jon Rahm (-110) vs. Scottie Scheffler (-110)

I do like Scheffler this week, just not as much as Rahm.

Open Championship – Top left-handed player

Robert MacIntyre (+155)

Brian Harman (+240), Phil Mickelson (+330) and Garrick Higgo (+380) are the only other lefties in this bet. I don’t think Phil or Higgo will contend, and MacIntyre is a way better fit at the Old Course than Harman.

Open Championship – Top Spanish

Jon Rahm (-150)

Sergio Garcia (+330), now on the LIV tour, has missed the cut in 3 of his last 4 PGA Tour starts. I don’t really see him pushing Rahm much in this category, nor will Pablo Loarrazabal (+500) or Adri Arnaus (+500).

Open Championship – First-round leader

Rory McIlroy (+2000)

McIlroy has actually started well in this year’s majors, contrary to recent years. That should continue at St. Andrews, where it could turn into a birdie fest. He’s also in the morning wave on Thursday, which may yield lower scores before the wind picks up and the course dries out.

Cameron Smith (+4000)

Smith ranks 6th in 1st-round scoring average this season, has an early tee time Thursday and makes birdies in bunches. At +4000, he’s an excellent value to put up a low round.

Open Championship – To make the cut

Suggested play in bold.

  • Tiger Woods: YES (-140) vs. No (+100)
  • Brooks Koepka: NO (+170) vs. Yes (-250)

More expert prop bet predictions

Group D winner: Tony Finau (+330)

This is a really good group, with Louis Oosthuizen (+330), Sam Burns (+330), Joaquin Niemann (+330) and Max Homa (+380) all in it. The close odds should tell you how competitive the scoring in this group should be, but I like Finau.

Top debutant: Joo-hyung Kim (+1500)

Kim is a name to know after finishing 3rd in the Scottish Open, which vaulted him inside the top 40 of the Official World Golf Ranking. Seamus Power (+900) is the favorite among debutants, with Mito Pereira (+1000) and Cameron Young (+1000) also in that group.
