Bill Belichick drops a casual Dwight Eisenhower quote during press conference

Only Bill Belichick.

Only Bill Belichick could casually drop a Dwight Eisenhower quote during a longwinded answer about in-game adjustments.

The New England Patriots coach was asked how often he has to tweak his plans on the fly during a game and how much he trusts quarterback Tom Brady and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to react to unexpected situations from opposing defenses.

“I would say in this league, you never really know what they other team’s going to do. I know there’s a lot of experts that have it all figured out. Unfortunately, I’m not in that group,” Belichick said Wednesday during a press conference. “It’s like Eisenhower said, preparation is important for the war. Once the war starts, you just throw it all out the window.”

The actual Eisenhower quote was, “In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” But we’ll give Belichick a pass for paragraphing.

Bill Belichick gets snarky over question about Antonio Brown’s apology to Patriots

Bill Belichick was short with the media when asked about Antonio Brown.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick didn’t want to discuss Antonio Brown during his press conference on Wednesday.

Belichick was informed Brown had issued an apology to Patriots owner Robert Kraft earlier this week on social media after Brown criticized Kraft on Twitter in November.

Belichick was asked if he will monitor Brown’s status amid the league’s investigation.

“You’d have to ask Robert about that,” Belichick said on Wednesday at Gillette Stadium during a press conference. “I mean, every week you guys ask me about a player that’s not on our team, so every week it’s going to be the same answer.”

Brown is facing an NFL investigation amid allegations of sexual assault and rape by his former trainer Britney Taylor. Not long after Taylor filed a civil lawsuit, Brown also faced accusations of sexual harassment. When those accusations made the news, Brown sent intimidating text messages to the second accuser. This all transpired between the time the Patriots signed him on Sept. 7 and released him on Sept. 20.

Despite the investigation, Brown is currently a free agent, and can sign with an NFL team. The allegations he is facing — combined with his long-standing erratic behavior — are surely playing a role in his unemployment.

Patriots’ Jake Bailey earns second AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award

For the second time this season, Patriots punter Jake Bailey has earned the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award.

For the second time this season, New England Patriots punter Jake Bailey has earned the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award.

Bailey won the award for his performance in Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he punted eight times for 381 yards — with an average of 47.6 yards. Six of those punts landed within the 20-yard line, and three of those landed within the 10-yard line.

The Patriots drafted Bailey in the fifth round this season and trusted him enough to release three-time Super Bowl champion Ryan Allen. By drafting Bailey, Bill Belichick also went against his norm of having a left-footed punter.

Bailey has also had some help from Pro Bowl special teamer’s Matthew Slater and Justin Bethel.

Josh McDaniels pleased with N’Keal Harry’s debut game vs. Eagles

Patriots offensive coordinator was happy with N’Keal Harry’s debut performance.

First-round rookie N’Keal Harry played his debut game for the New England Patriots in Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

He was placed on the injured reserve list with an ankle injury during the preseason and was activated ahead of New England’s Week 9 matchup. The Patriots decided him not to play him against the Baltimore Ravens, but they felt comfortable with his progress ahead of the Eagles game.

Harry didn’t put up extraordinary numbers in that game, but he did finished with three receptions for 18 yards. After Phillip Dorsett left the game with an injury, Harry’s playing time increased and he finished the game with 32 snaps.

Josh McDaniels had a lengthy response on Harry’s first game during a conference call on Tuesday.

“It was good to get him out there and into the game,” McDaniels said. “I thought he was ready to play. He had a good week of practice last week. In any rookie’s first opportunity to play in the National Football League, there’s probably going to be some good and then some things to work on and that you learn from those experiences in the game. There’s no way you can simulate that in practice or walkthroughs or what have you, so to go in there in a game and compete against other players in that type of situation under pressure, I think it’s a great experience and great exposure for him.

“He made a few catches for us and helped us move the ball. He tried to block in the running game effectively and did a decent job there, and at the same time, there’s definitely things that we’ve been able to see through the film that we’ll improve on and he’ll work towards being better at as we go forward. Every rookie starts at the same spot when you’re going out there for your first time — you’re excited to play, you’re eager to go out there and help your team make an impact. I thought he did some good things, and there’s definitely some things that we’ll be able to work on going forward to make N’Keal a better player and help our offense even more.”

Harry has a short period of time to catch onto the offense and the flow of the NFL before the postseason begins. Fortunately, he has McDaniels, Tom Brady and Mohamed Sanu to get him up to speed.

Watch: Rob Gronkowski does hilarious cheerleading routine with Laker Girls

Rob Gronkowski is thoroughly enjoying his retirement.

Rob Gronkowski is thoroughly enjoying his retirement.

The former New England Patriots tight end is well-known for being an entertainer on and off the field. On Tuesday night, Gronkowski, Venus Williams and James Corden joined the Laker Girls and performed a cheerleading routine.

This video isn’t the slightest bit surprising for Gronkowski.

He also announced on Tuesday morning that he will be hosting a music festival called Gronk Beach on the Saturday before Super Bowl LIV.

This was just another typical day in the life of Gronk.

Patriots activate Isaiah Wynn, place Gunner Olszewski on IR

The Patriots are activating left tackle Isaiah Wynn and placing wide receiver Gunner Olszewski on the injured reserve list.

[jwplayer 6Q40ShvH-ThvAeFxT]

The New England Patriots have officially activated left tackle Isaiah Wynn from the injured reserve list. Subsequently, they placed wide receiver Gunner Olszewski on the injured reserve list because of lingering ankle and hamstring injuries.

Wynn was placed on the injured reserve list with a toe injury after New England’s Week 2 victory over the Miami Dolphins. He missed the entirety of his rookie season due to a torn achilles. He is healthy now and the Patriots can play him as soon as this week against the Dallas Cowboys — giving New England’s offense a considerable boost.

Olszewski hasn’t played since Week 8 and he became the team’s primary punt returner. He had an unlikely path to the NFL and finished his season with 20 punt returns for 179 yards. Mohamed Sanu took those responsibilities over in Week 11.

Tom Brady and the offense has struggled with instability on the offensive line, so Wynn will provide much-needed security on his blindside.

Antonio Brown apologizes to Robert Kraft, Patriots in Instagram post

Antonio Brown sent an apology on Tuesday morning to Robert Kraft and the Patriots organization.

Antonio Brown has had mixed feelings about the NFL and certain individuals throughout this season.

He went back and forth between wanting to be in the NFL and saying that he’d never return. Brown was extremely excited about joining the Oakland Raiders, until he posted his excitement about leaving the Raiders. He bashed Robert Kraft on Twitter after getting cut by the New England Patriots, and now he’s apologizing.

Brown sent an apology on Tuesday morning to Kraft and the organization.

Mr. Kraft I apologize sincerely to you and your organization! All I wanted to be was an asset to the organization; sorry for the bad media and drama! Thank you sincerely AB

Although the Patriots desperately need some offensive firepower this season, it’s still very unlikely that they reconsider and sign Brown. He isn’t expected to play again this season, because the NFL would likely put him on the commissioner’s exempt list if a team signed him.

Brown played one game with the Patriots and recorded four catches for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Rob Gronkowski won’t rule out an NFL return, but it won’t happen in 2019

“I wouldn’t say ‘never coming back'”

It’s clear that the New England Patriots could use Rob Gronkowski, but that won’t happen this season.

Gronkowski happily retired last season after completing a career that gave him three Super Bowl rings and a bid into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He’s teased the idea of returning multiple times throughout this season and he’s also thoroughly shut that idea down. He has until Nov. 30 to make a return, but he’s decided to enjoy his retirement instead.

He hyped up a ‘big announcement’ for Tuesday morning, but that turned out to be a music festival called ‘Gronk Beach’ that’s set for Feb. 1 in Miami. He spoke with ESPN on Tuesday and made an official statement about his future as an NFL player.

“I wouldn’t say ‘never coming back,'” Gronkowski said. “I’m 30 years old. I’m young. I still stay fit, still watch the game whenever I can, still enjoy it. I’m feeling good, but you know, one year off could possibly be the case. Or maybe two years off, man.

“It’s always an option in the back of my head. It’s not like I’m not staying in shape and not doing anything. I’m never stressed over it.”

Gronkowski has dealt with lingering injuries throughout his entire career and this is the first time that he’s let his body heal. He even partnered with a CBD company to endorse and help spread the message about receiving pain with this product.

He’s been paying attention to his former team that is currently 9-1 and No. 1 in the AFC.

“The defense is just tremendous, the way they’re coming together with the veteran leadership they have there, and the skill set they have,” Gronkowski said. “With the offense, they’re finding ways to make it work like they’ve always done, putting guys in the right situation to make plays. But man, they’re missing some guy who is 6-6, 260 [pounds]. They’re missing that guy, for sure.”

Most NFL fans are missing that guy, but Gronkowski sent a reminder that everyone should be appreciative of what he was able to do in his nine years.

“Many of them say they want to see me back on the field, but I take it more deeply to the heart when they tell me they appreciate the nine years with the team and they just want to see me happy and healthy,” Gronkowski said.

Rob Gronkowski will appear at Super Bowl LIV, but not as a player

Rob Gronkowski shut down the possibility of a 2019 NFL return on Tuesday morning.

[jwplayer 9SMId7hu]

Rob Gronkowski shut down the possibility of a 2019 NFL return on Tuesday morning.

The former New England Patriots tight end previously said that he had a ‘big announcement’ to make on Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. ET. With a deadline to return to the team on Nov. 30, many people hoped for Gronkowski to announce that he was coming out of retirement.

That wasn’t the case. Gronkowski announced that he’ll be in Miami during Super Bowl LIV weekend for a music festival called ‘Gronk Beach’. The festival will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1 on Miami Beach.

This isn’t exactly the news that Patriots fans were hoping for, but it’s definitely not uncharacteristic of Gronkowski to hype up the event in this fashion. He hasn’t ruled out a return to the NFL in the future, but he’ll thoroughly enjoy his retirement for now.

The Patriots offense has its identity and it’s obvious why Tom Brady doesn’t like it

“I don’t think it matters what I think, it matters what we do.” -Tom Brady

[jwplayer 6Q40ShvH-ThvAeFxT]

Tom Brady’s and Bill Belichick’s postgame press conferences couldn’t have been more different after the New England Patriots’ 17-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Patriots coach stepped up to the podium with a lot to say. He subtly took a jab at Lane Johnson and dropped jokes about Julian Edelman’s touchdown pass before touting punter Jake Bailey at length. Then Brady stepped up to the mic, and said fewer words in total (146) during a nine-question press conference than Belichick said in one answer about Bailey (263).

Does Brady have thoughts on the red zone offense?

“I don’t have anymore. I don’t know,” he said Sunday.

And the offense as a whole?

“Up and down,” Brady said. “That’s what it looks like to me. We could probably do everything better.”

Is he concerned?

“I don’t think it matters what I think, it matters what we do,” Brady said, adding that the defense is “keeping us in every game.”

The body language was downtrodden. The words weren’t necessarily negative, but Brady definitely flirted with pessimism, even after a loss. His discontent showed on and off the field after he completed 55.3% of his passes, his second-lowest percentage this season, for 216 yards at 4.6 yards per attempt, his lowest average on the season. Brady admitted there was “frustration” on offense. Brady said on WEEI what we’ve all noticed: “The strength of our team is our defense and our special teams.”

The strength isn’t the offense — and it’s not Tom Brady. And that must be weird for the Patriots quarterback, who is accustomed to being not just the best player on his team but also in the NFL. With the defense excelling and winning games, Brady hasn’t gotten to do as much as he likes. And with the offense still trying to find its footing, Brady has been relegated to the role of game manager. They’re trying to run the ball well (though they’re struggling at 3.3 yards per carry). They’re trying to dink and dunk on high percentage throws. But that’s not working as well as in past years.

So there seems to be a message to Brady? Do less. Don’t take risks. Don’t do anything Alex Smith wouldn’t do. And Brady doesn’t seem to love that.

“On offense we just have to take advantage when we get opportunities and understand where our strengths lie and try and play to them — not giving any short fields, not turning the ball over and try and take advantage when we get into the red area to score touchdowns,” Brady said on WEEI. “That is kind of where our offense is. That is kind of where our team is.”

Brady sounds like Belichick is treating him like Old Yeller. And perhaps that’s what Brady fears. The Patriots quarterback is heading into a contract year, with his deal expiring after the 2019 season. It’s likely the Patriots will retain Brady. But contractually, anything can happen, however unlikely those scenarios might be. So if Brady is thinking about his future — and wondering whether he might move on from New England (or it might move on from him) — then he’s not looking at a formidable body of work in contract negotiations this summer.

He’s Tom Brady. If he hits free agency, he’ll be a man in demand. But he’s also 42 years old. If Brady looks like he’s on the decline, perhaps his options are more limited than if he’s coming off another impressive season that makes him look ageless. Perhaps he entered a situation like Brett Favre had with the 2008 Jets, rather than what Peyton Manning had with the 2012 Broncos. And even if Brady has no intention of testing the market, he’ll need a good year to get a respectable contract out of Belichick and Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio.

But there’s hope that this offense has upside. Receiver Mohamed Sanu seems to have taken quickly to the offense after joining the Patriots in a deal with the Falcons before the trade deadline. His progress could be a welcome development. New England also seems committed to getting running back Sony Michel involved in the passing offense. This might prove to be a mistake, as Michel has lacked explosiveness and elusiveness. But if Michel can display the big play ability he demonstrated at Georgia, perhaps he’ll make a difference in this offense. (And if Michel stinks, the Patriots can turn to running back Damien Harris, a 2019 third-round pick.) Rookie receiver N’Keal Harry made his NFL debut in Week 11, with three receptions for 18 yards. He was a first-round pick, and should have a more significant role in the offense in the coming weeks. Finally, Brady will get better protection on the blindside when Isaiah Wynn returns to left tackle — he’s likely to start in Week 12 after spending eight weeks on injured reserve.

But that’s all projection. Those players need to step up in a big way if this offense is going to be a product that Brady can be proud of. He seems to have extended a challenge to his teammates, because he’s not happy with what he’s got. He’s not ready to defer to the defense.
