Wyoming (1-0) vs Northern Illinois (1-0) Game Preview

Why Wyoming Will Win

It took WAY too much work for Wyoming to get by Montana State – scoring 16 fourth quarter points to avoid a disaster – but that’s what this team does.

The passing game is always going to be rocky, but the running game is supposed to be better than the 151 yards the O generated. Now the attack should be a whole lot stronger.

It’s the defensive side that should be able to take over. It was great on third downs against the Bobcats, it has the big hitters to tee off against the NIU backs, and grinding games down in a low scoring fight fits what the team likes to do.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

Now that’s what Northern Illinois is supposed to do under head coach Thomas Hammock.

It’s a veteran team that’s never going to blow the doors off anyone with its offense, but it’s supposed to be effective on the ground and opportunistic when it gets its chances.

The O wasn’t great in the 22-21 shocker over Georgia Tech, and the defense had a hard time against a ground game that came up with a slew of gashes, but the D did a whole lot of bending without breaking.

Stop with the penalties – a huge problem for the Huskies last week – control the clock better, and expect the Wyoming offense to stay mediocre. This team can do that.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to be anything pretty, but it’ll be a good battle until late.

Each team will struggle to go on long scoring drives, and neither side will get anything big out of the quarterback.

Former Michigan State QB Rocky Lombardi was steady for NIU against Georgia Tech last week, but the defense won’t be able to hold up quite as well against the Cowboys.

The Yellow Jackets couldn’t throw – QB Jeff Sims got hurt – and couldn’t convert the rushing yards into points. The Cowboys will come up with just enough points on its few good drives to survive.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Georgia Tech (0-0) vs Northern Illinois (0-0) Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

Here comes the payoff – at least that’s the hope.

The Huskies have struggled so far in the Thomas Hammock era – to be kind – but they were really, really young last season and now they’ve got the veterans. It all has to start on the offensive front.

Northern Illinois rocked and rolled over the years when the running game was great, but the O line hasn’t been able to generate enough of a push. Now everyone is back, the top receivers return, and the defense gets back even more experience.

Almost every NIU defender who made a tackle in 2020 is back. However …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Can Northern Illinois stop the run?

Yeah, the Huskies are full of veterans, but those players weren’t all that great last season – now they’re just older.

Georgia Tech isn’t the run-first-run-only team of years past, but it’s still going to do its best work on the ground. The wide receivers are good, the running backs are in place, and QB Jeff Sims appears to be a keeper who can make it all go.

After last season, Northern Illinois still has to prove it can generate a pass rush and do something positive on a consistent basis against the run.

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Georgia Tech offense finally get going?

It’s a new year and these are new teams, but if the Yellow Jackets can’t produce against the Northern Illinois defense, there’s a problem.

The Tech running game won’t be steady, but it’ll hit just enough home runs to make up for it. Northern Illinois will put points on the board against a Yellow Jacket defense that has more to prove than the offensive side.

It’ll be entertaining, but Georgia Tech will own the clock and control the game enough to get by.

2021 CFN MAC Preseason Rankings: East

1. Buffalo Bulls

Quick Take: It’s a new era of UB football under Maurice Linguist, and there’s still enough in place to at least be in the mix for the MAC Championship. The running game will still be good, the defensive back seven is among the best in the league, and overall the machine shouldn’t stop.
Buffalo Preview | Schedule

2. Kent State Golden Flashes

Quick Take: The FlashFast offense is about to be deadlier than ever. The Golden Flashes have the best quarterback in the league in Dustin Crum, the coaching staff is in a groove now, and the defense should be just a wee bit better.
Kent St Preview | Schedule

3. Miami University RedHawks

Quick Take: Defense, offensive consistency, repeat. There might not be a big-time running game, but the passing attack will be fine, the linebacking corps will be great, and the RedHawks will make a big push for the East.
MU Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532453]

4. Ohio Bobcats

Quick Take: Feel more than free to put Ohio at the top of the East list – or at least shuffle it among the four best teams – with a great offensive backfield, what should be a dominant running game, and with a D that should be just good enough to hold serve.
Ohio Preview | Schedule

5. Akron Zips

Quick Take: It’s still a work in progress. Akron needs the lines to be a whole lot better, the offense has to be far more consistent, and there have to be a few things the team can rely on week after week. On the plus side, the experience is there.
Akron Preview | Schedule

6. Bowling Green Falcons

Quick Take: The offense has GOT to start working. Head coach Scot Loeffler knows how to get an O going, but it has to happen already to help overcome a defensive front that’s still going to have major issues.

2021 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Dustin Crum, Sr. Kent State

Really? The Kent State starting quarterback is getting interest from the NFL world? Yup, and that’s because 6-3, 207-pound guys who can run a fast-paced offense and can move work at the next level.

Phenomenal at the end of the 2019 season as he led the team to comeback wins and a bowl victory, he was brilliant last year hitting 74% of his throws with 12 touchdowns and two picks – to go along with 240 rushing yards and four scores – in just four games. Now he should take the FlashFast style of O to another level.

2021 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

DE Troy Hairston, Sr. Central Michigan

The MAC is full of big-time pass rushers and excellent defensive linemen who’ll put up big stats and huge plays. The best of the returning lot is a 5-11, 245-pound undersized end and oversized linebacker who’ll once again play in a hybrid role to make a whole lot of big things happen.

He was okay as a junior, but last year he took off with 42 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss in just six games. It’s going to keep on rolling on a veteran D.

Northern Illinois College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense struggled. It found ways to score, but it couldn’t move the chains, the running game never got going, and the passing attack wasn’t strong enough to make up for the issues. Northern Illinois would love to get back to being Northern Illinois and start pounding again, but …

Northern Illinois was really young. Now the payoff should come up front with all five starting linemen expected back to pave the way for Harrison Waylee and Erin Collins – the top two running backs from last year. Now the ground game needs to do more than 3.45 yards per carry – and it should.

– Can Rocky Lombardi be the answer? The Michigan State transfer should be the main man at quarterback, but redshirt freshman Dustin Fletcher got in enough work last year to be a part of the puzzle. The top three wide receivers are back – led by senior Tyrice Richie, coming off a 53-catch, 597-yard, four-score season – but they all need to stretch the field more.

The pre-spring version of the CFN 2021 rankings with a first look at all the MAC teams.

[jwplayer 6b512Mhi]

2021 MAC Rankings: Pre-Spring

MAC East

1. Kent State Golden Flashes

Why To Be Happy: Sean Lewis is still the head coach. He’s a strong young talent who’s overdue for a next step up job, but he’s around, as is QB Dustin Crum, who’s back for his senior-plus year. All five starters are expected back on the O line, just enough is back on defense to be okay, and landing S Antwaine Richardson from Maryland and WR Nykeim Johnson from Syracuse is huge.

What To Work On: Matthew Trickett was one of the best kickers in 2019 and was fine in his limited work last year. Now he’s at Minnesota, and good backup QB Woody Barrett is in the transfer portal. The D has to be a whole lot better despite losing a few key parts.

Bottom Line: It’ll be a good fight to be at the top of the MAC East, but the Golden Flashes should have too much offense to not make a run to the MAC Championship game.

2. Buffalo Bulls

Why To Be Happy: The team caught a break when RB Kevin Marks apparently decided to come back. He might not put up Jaret Patterson numbers, but he’s All-MAC good. At least seven starters are expected back on defense, and the quarterbacks are in place to be fine, but …

What To Work On: The team has to replace enough talent to be a problem. The O line needs some reworking, the receiving corps has to find parts, TE Zac Lefebvre took off for WKU, and DE Malcolm Koonce is one of the key defensive stars who’s done.

Bottom Line: This is likely going to be a weaker version of the team that should’ve won last year’s MAC title, but it’s still going to be one of the stars in the East if the O line comes together fast.

3. Ohio Bobcats

Why To Be Happy: Thanks to the return of a De’Montre Tuggle for his senior-plus season, the offensive backfield should be terrific. A few of the receivers are gone, and the line has to do some reshuffling, but the defense that was so young at so many parts should be a bit tighter.

What To Work On: Overall, the pass rush has to be a whole lot stronger, the defense has to be more disruptive, and the passing game has to be more dangerous. That’s a lot to fix, but they’re more tweaks than total overhauls.

Bottom Line: Ohio was supposed to be a whole lot better last year, but it should be a player in the MAC East race as long as the defensive line can start making more things happen in the backfield.

4. Miami University RedHawks

Why To Be Happy: The defensive front seven/six should be strong enough with the returning parts to be among the best in the MAC. QB Brett Gabbert is back along with a slew of decent receivers, and there’s a massive get from the transfer portal with Northwestern’s Isaiah Bowser coming in.

What To Work On: The O line needs new starts. Left tackle Tommy Doyle was a senior who’s now off to try out the NFL, and C Danny Godlevske is not an Oklahoma State Cowboy.

Bottom Line: There’s enough defensively to be terrific with a little time, and the offensive backfield will be good enough to shine if the line can quickly replace Doyle and Godlevske.

5. Akron Zips

Why To Be Happy: The Zips get back just about everyone on offense after going really, really young over the last few years, and the defense is almost all back full, too. There hasn’t been a whole lot coming in from the transfer portal – Michigan State RB Anthony Williams should play a role – but the veterans are there to improve.

What To Work On: Akron has to be better on the lines. The defensive front has to start making things happen in the backfield, and the offense needs to be far, far better in pass protection.

Bottom Line: It has been a brutal run over the last few years, but after two rough seasons under Tom Arth, at least the experience is there to potentially make a little bit of noise.

6. Bowling Green Falcons

Why To Be Happy: The offense should be a bit better. Syracuse transfer Drew Gunther is another option at quarterback, Andrew Clair is a veteran back, and this is when all the young receivers should step up. The D won’t be a brick wall, but it’ll be among the most experienced in the MAC.

What To Work On: The passing game has to work. That’s the whole reason for Scot Loeffler to be the head coach – the O is supposed to rock. It has taken a while, but as long as the turnovers slow down, the team will be a whole lot better.

Bottom Line: Baby steps need to be leaps. It’s the third year under Loeffler and this is when the rebuild needs to be complete. The team needs something it can rely on.

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

This is a weird team that can’t seem to put it together.

The running game isn’t moving, and the defense gives up a whole lot of points, but the offense dominates the time of possession battle and the D is great at getting off the field on third down stops.

The passing attack is as good as it’s been in a while for the program, but it can’t keep the chains moving.

There are just enough decent parts to potentially click on the right day – that’s what Eastern Michigan might be for.

The Eagles might be coming off a win, but they’re not playing any defense, the ground game doesn’t really work, and they struggle way too much against the run.

But again …
