Report: Cardinals cut CB Chris Jones

He had 22 tackles and six pass breakups in 2019. He could be brought back to the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals, as of Saturday morning, had to cut another 16 players from their roster to get to the required 53 by 1 p.m. Arizona time. According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, they have 15 to go now.

They are reportedly cutting cornerback Chris Jones.

Jones was an undrafted rookie out of Nebraska who spent time with the Cardinals for two seasons. Last year, he appeared in 11 games, starting three and had 22 tackles and six pass breakups.

Pelissero believes he could be claimed off waivers. If not, he would be a candidate for the Cardinals to bring back to the practice squad.

With Jones getting cut, it would appear to clear the way for Ken Crawley and Kevin Peterson to make the roster, with undrafted rookie Jace Whittaker getting a shot as well, depending on how many they keep on the roster at that position.

Report: Cardinals 2018 1st-round pick Josh Rosen to be cut by Dolphins

He will be jobless just two years after being drafted 10th overall by the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals believed they had a potential franchise quarterback when they traded up to select Josh Rosen with the 10th pick of the 2018 draft. After a rough rookie season and getting traded after the Cardinals selected Kyler Murray first overall in 2019, Rosen is without a team.

According to Adam Schefter, he is being released by the Miami Dolphins.

Perhaps it should not be seen as a surprise cut. The Dolphins reportedly unsuccessfully tried to trade him. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the starting quarterback and Miami selected Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in the draft.

Rosen never really had a chance.

He started 13 games as a rookie, going 3-10, passing for 2,278 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The Cardinals dealt him to the Dolphins for a 2019 second-round pick and a 2020 fifth-round pick. They used those picks to select Andy Isabella and to acquire Kenyan Drake from the Dolphins midseason in 2019.

In 2019, He started three games, losing all three. He had 567 passing yards, one touchdown and five interceptions.

He has certainly not performed at a high level, but he has had a very unfortunate career arc so far.

He was on the league’s worst team in 2018 coached by a man who was fired after one season. He had two offensive coordinators in Arizona. Miami was expectedly bad in 2019 and changed coordinators before this season.

Since 2015, he will be on his eighth offensive coordinator and ninth if you include the few weeks he had with Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Unless he can find stability with a team and develop the way many believed he would, his story will end up being very similar to Matt Leinart, another quarterback the Cardinals drafted 10th overall and saw become a bust in the league.

Report: Cardinals shopped pair of O-linemen; Justin Pugh discussed

The Cardinals reportedly were shopping Max Garcia and Joshua Miles. Justin Pugh’s name came up in talks.

The Arizona Cardinals have apparently been busy trying to work out some trades to make building their final roster a little easier. According to SI.com’s Albert Breer, they were shopping multiple offensive linemen.

The names that have come up are veteran guard Max Garcia, second-year tackle Joshua Miles and starting left guard Justin Pugh.

The surprising name on here is Pugh, but Breer clarified. Pugh’s name came up in trade talks. It doesn’t appear that it was initiated by the Cardinals.

The Cardinals don’t have a ton of space under the salary cap and Pugh is a solid starter.

Dealing Miles would be similar to what the Cardinals did last year when they traded Korey Cunningham. With third-round draft pick Josh Jones, the Cardinals probably see Miles as a luxury, or as a young asset.

Moving Garcia would free up more money, as he is due $910,000 with $450,000 of it guaranteed.

He is projected to be their main interior backup, but is they are willing to move him, it means they trust Justin Murray and perhaps recently signed Koda Martin.

We will see if a deal actually gets done over the weekend.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim already impressed by 2020 draft class

He raved about the rookies’ maturity in an interview on the radio in Phoenix on Friday.

The Arizona Cardinals have yet to take the field in 2020 and play any real football, but they are getting positive returns for the six players they selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. General manager Steve Keim spoke about the rookies in an interview on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM on Friday.

“This draft class has been extremely impressive,” he said. “Just the maturation of some of these young guys and the commitment and passion. It’s just a nice mix to have in the locker room right now.”

One of the areas of focus for the Cardinals with their draft class was to select mature players who were leaders.

While not everyone will play this season, the Cardinals feel like they have a very mature group of players in the locker room, even if many lack playing experience in the league.

Report: Cardinals unsuccessfully tried to trade Hakeem Butler before release

The former fourth-round pick had no takers despite his size and speed.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a few of their initial cuts on Friday, as they must get the roster down to 53 players by Saturday afternoon. Among those cuts were receiver Hakeem Butler, their fourth-round pick from a year ago.

They didn’t want to necessarily cut him. While they didn’t want to keep him on the final roster, they attempted to get something for him.

According to SI.com’s Albert Breer, the Cardinals were shopping Butler, seeking trade him to another team. They were unsuccessful in doing so.

Butler never got to play a down for the Cardinals. He had one preseason appearance in 2019 before suffering a hand injury that landed him on injured reserve before the season, ending his rookie year before it started.

With no preseason this year, no team had the opportunity to scout him.

While he has a rare combination of size, speed and athleticism, he never was quite able to stand out.

He was highly thought of coming out of the draft but was considered raw. Perhaps he was just unlucky to get hurt when he did and then to have the pandemic change the game this offseason, but he will surely get another look with someone else at some point.

Cardinals release WR Hakeem Butler, others on eve of final cuts

Last year’s fourth-round pick is let go even before the final day to make roster moves.

The Arizona Cardinals entered the day with 74 players on their roster and have until Saturday afternoon to get get it down to 53. They announced five moves on Friday to get the roster down to 69 players.

They released four players outright, including last year’s fourth-round pick, receiver Hakeem Butler.

Getting released along with Butler were offensive lineman Sam Jones, defensive lineman Miles Brown and punter Ryan Winslow.

Offensive lineman Brett Toth was waived/injured. He has an issue with a hamstring. If he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve.

Butler is the most prominent player to get cut. Brown was the only undrafted rookie to make the team last season, but when the Cardinals signed Jordan Phillips and drafted Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence, it was going to be hard for him to make the team.

Jones and Winslow never really had a shot at the roster.

That leaves 16 cuts the Cardinals will need to make by Saturday at 1 p.m. Arizona time.

After final cuts are made, they will be able to assemble a 16-player practice squad.
