The NFC West was dominant in Week 1, going 4-0

The NFC West went 4-0 in Week 1. A look at each of the team’s Week 1 games and results.

All but one game of the Week 1 schedule for the NFL is complete and if there is one thing to take away from the 15 games that have been played so far is that the NFC West is going to be very competitive.

All four teams played on Sunday. All four teams won their season opener. All four teams scored at least 28 points. The only team not to win by double digits were the San Francisco 49ers and that was because of garbage-time scores.

The four teams combined to have a +65 point differential after one week.

Here are what the NFC West standings look like after one game. The 49ers and Rams have conference wins so they are ahead of the Cardinals and Seahawks, who both played AFC teams in Week 1, and the Rams had a better point differential than the 49ers, so that is why the Rams are in first place.

  1. Los Angeles Rams 1-0
  2. San Francisco 49ers 1-0
  3. Arizona Cardinals 1-0
  4. Seattle Seahawks 1-0

The details for each of the games the division played are below.

Rams RB Cam Akers suffers season-ending injury while training

The expected featured back for the Los Angeles Rams now will miss the season, which affects the outlook of the NFC West.

We have our first significant injury of the NFC West for 2021 and training camps have not even started. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers suffered a torn Achilles while training, which will end his season.

This is a big blow to the Rams offense. Akers was expected to be their starting and featured back after playing well at the end of his rookie season in 2020.

He was sidelined for a bit last season with a rib injury and then an ankle injury. In 13 games last season, including five starts, he rushed for 625 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

He added 221 yards and two scores in two playoff games.

The depth chart for the Rams behind Akers isn’t strong. Darrell Henderson presumably will move into the starting role, although he was limited in the offseason with an undisclosed injury.

This will mean the Rams will have to lean even more on the passing game and quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The Rams are the favorites to win the NFC West. This injury will make it easier for challengers like the Arizona Cardinals to overtake them.
