Kliff Kingsbury tried to convince Aaron Donald to retire, Cooper Kupp to hold out

At Sean McVay’s wedding, Kingsbury tried to keep the Rams from inking the new contracts they did this week with Kupp and Donald.

The Los Angeles Rams made a pair of big announcements this week, inking defensive tackle Aaron Donald and receiver Cooper Kupp to huge contract extensions. Donald will make $95 million over the next three seasons and Kupp will get $110 million over the next five.

Before those deals went down, Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury tried cause some problems.

He attended Rams head coach Sean McVay’s wedding last weekend and, when he spoke with reporters on Thursday, said he tried to convince Donald to retire and Kupp to hold out.

“I told (Donald) he’s accomplished all he can accomplish and it’s a great idea to go out on your own terms,” Kinsgbury said, “and I told Kupp, ‘I know you and Sean are friends, but stop taking that McVay discount, hold out for the first three weeks and get something sorted out.'”

“Obviously that didn’t work out,” he added, as both deals went down the week after the wedding.

Kingsbury shot his shot, but it wasn’t enough. He and the Cardinals will have to deal with Donald and Kupper multiple times for the next few seasons.

Division rival Rams do it again, sign WR Cooper Kupp to big contract extension

Kupp will now get $110 million over the next five seasons and $75 million in guarantees.

The Los Angeles Rams, one of the Arizona Cardinals’ NFC West rivals, continue to do big things this offseason after winning the Super Bowl. The latest is a big contract extension for wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

He gets a three-year extension that now pays him $110 million over the next five seasons and nets him $75 million in guarantees. His contract sets the record for total guaranteed money for a wide receiver.

This is on the heels of signing defensive tackle Aaron Donald to a contract extension.

Kupp led the NFL in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947) and touchdown receptions (16). He was Pro Bowler, first-team All-Pro, NFL Offensive Player of the Year and the Super Bowl MVP.

The Rams have given big extensions to Kupp, Donald and quarterback Matthew Stafford. They also added receiver Allen Robinson and linebacker Bobby Wagner to big free agent deals.

They continue to make big moves and pay big money while the Cardinals have been doing much less, re-signing their own free agents and, so far, getting no contract extensions done, although one for quarterback Kyler Murray is expected this summer.

The Cardinals will face Kupp at least twice a season for the next five years.

In eight career regular-season games against the Cardinals, Kupp has 54 receptions for 606 yards and four touchdowns. He had five receptions for 61 yards and a score in the Rams’ playoff win over the Cardinals this past season.

NFC West foe Rams give Aaron Donald big raise to ensure his return to team

The Rams gave Aaron Donald a three-year, $95 million contract, $40 million more than he was due to get over that same period.

Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald said if his team won the Super Bowl, he would consider retiring. They won the Super Bowl and, despite continuing to be arguably the best defensive player in the NFL, he put pressure on the Rams to give him a new contract despite having three years remaining on his current deal.

He will be back in 2022 and will continue to terrorize opposing quarterbacks, including the Arizona Cardinals.

The team announced a new contract with Donald, one that pays him $40 million more but doesn’t extend his deal.

Apparently, the threat of retirement was real enough to force the Rams to just give him more money.

It is a three-year, $95 million contract. $65 million of that is fully guaranteed over the next two seasons. His previous deal had $55 million remaining in the contract over the next three seasons.

This means quarterback Kyler Murray and the Cardinals will have to face him at least four more times over the next two seasons and have to deal with his constant disruption at the line of scrimmage.

The world champions somehow come up with money to pay another star, keeping them looking like the favorites in the NFC.
