49ers are NFC West champs after win over Seahawks

The 49ers have won seven straight games after starting the season 3-4.

The NFC West has been won. The San Francisco 49ers clinched the division title Thursday night with their 21-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks. They improved to 10-4 on the season.

They started the season 3-4 and now have won seven straight games, including the last two with seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy at quarterback.

They are 5-0 in division games with only one remaining in Week 18 against the Arizona Cardinals.

They have done it with great defense — ranked No. 1 in yards and points allowed — and a top-10 offense.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals are now just trying to stay out of the cellar and make improvements for the rest of the season. They might be eliminated this weekend completely from playoff contention.

49ers extend lead in NFC West in Week 14 with Brock Purdy

Despite no Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers extended their lead in the NFC West to two games with four left in the regular season.

The NFC West is officially a two-team race. The Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams are both eliminated from competing for the division title.

It comes down to the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks, and the 49ers extended their lead in the division in Week 14.

This is what the NFC West standings look like entering Week 15.

  1. San Francisco 49ers, 9-4 (4-0 division)
  2. Seattle Seahawks, 7-6 (3-1 division)
  3. Arizona Cardinals, 4-9 (1-4 division)
  4. Los Angeles Rams, 4-9 (1-4 division)

The Cardinals are technically ahead of the Rams in third place because they hold a common games tiebreaker, as they split the season series with each other and have the same division record now.

The 49ers improved to 8-4 and maintained their lead in the NFC West but lost QB Jimmy Garoppolo for the rest of the season.

The NFC West didn’t change at all in Week 13, at least in terms of the standings. Three of the four teams played, two won and one lost. One team, the Arizona Cardinals, was idle on the bye week.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo out for rest of season, will miss Week 18 game vs. Cardinals

The Cardinals play the 49ers in Week 18. They won’t face Jimmy Garoppolo, who suffered a broken foot against the Dolphins.

The NFC West race just got more interesting. The division-leading San Francisco 49ers have lost quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for the rest of the season.

He broke his foot in the team’s 33-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and will have season-ending surgery on his foot.

The Cardinals still have one game remaining against the 49ers in Week 18, so it means they will not have to face Garoppolo.

Brock Purdy is now slated to be the starter at quarterback for the 49ers. Against Miami, he had 210 yards, two touchdown passes and an interception in relief of Garoppolo.

The 49ers are 8-4 and lead the NFC West by one game over the Seattle Seahawks, although they do hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Seahawks.

Assuming Purdy is healthy and playing relatively all right, the Cardinals will face him instead of Garoppolo to end the regular season.

The 49ers have now had both Trey Lance and Garoppolo suffer season-ending injuries.

Cardinals could open Week 14 in last place in NFC West

If the Rams beat the Seahawks in Week 13, they would tie the Cardinals at 4-8 and hold a divisional tiebreaker.

The Arizona Cardinals are idle in Week 13. They have their bye week and will reload next week to get ready for their Week 14 home game against the New England Patriots next Monday night.

The are 4-8 and in third place in the NFC West.

However, they might be in last place after today.

The Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams play each other Sunday in Los Angeles.

The Rams are 3-8 and the Seahawks are 6-5.

While a loss by the Seahawks would push them closer to the Cardinals in the division and conference standings, a win by the Rams would put them ahead of the Cardinals.

If the Rams win, they improve to 4-8 on the season, tying the Cardinals’ record. But because the Cardinals are 1-4 in the division and a Rams win would make them 2-3 in NFC West games, the Rams would hold the tiebreaker and push Arizona into the cellar of the division.

Which is better for the Cardinals and their almost nonexistent playoff hopes?

They need to start passing other teams, so a Seattle loss is more helpful over the course of the rest of the season than a Rams loss.

The ideal scenario is to have Seattle lose but then the Rams to lose more games in the weeks to come.

In Week 12, the 49ers gained a game over the rest of the NFC West, as they were the only team in the division to win.

The NFC West did not have a great weekend in Week 12, except for the San Francisco 49ers. All four teams played in Week 12 and only the 49ers won.

As they were already in first place, they distanced themselves from the rest of the division by a game.

The NFC West continues to look a bit backward. Following their week 8 games, the Seattle Seahawks, believed entering the season to be in a rebuilding year and could compete for the worst record in the NFL, are the only team in the division with a winning record and lead the West with a 5-3 record.
