Social media reacts to Aggies ending Notre Dame’s season

Survive and advance! As cliche as this motto may be, the Aggies have yet to stumble with their backs against the wall as they’ve now won their second consecutive elimination game in Omaha – a 5-1 win versus Notre Dame to set-up a rematch against Oklahoma in the Men’s College World Series Final Four.

While adversity hit this 2022 squad early in Omaha – an opening round loss versus the Sooners – the Aggies are the only team to have played entirely out of the elimination bracket and make their way to the Final Four (Texas A&M, Texas, Stanford and Auburn). If this doesn’t prove the fight in this group, I don’t know what else will.

With the Aggies’ season on the line, facing one of their fiercest rivals, in the 2022 Men’s College World Series’ first elimination game, #5 Texas A&M defeated #9 Texas by a score of 10-2 – continuing the team’s trend of limiting back-to-back losses.

After finding themselves down 2-0 early in the 2nd-inning, the Aggies powered their way to a decisive victory after scoring four of their own in the bottom of the second – the beginning of what would become 10 unanswered runs to end the Longhorns’ season and set-up a meeting with Notre Dame, in their second consecutive elimination game, on Tuesday, June 21 at 2:00 PM ET/1:00 PM CT on ESPN.

Antonio Johnson named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-American Team

Antonio Johnson named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-American Team

Antonio Johnson has been named to the Walter Camp Preseason All-American Team as one of four defensive backs selected to the First Team Preseason Defense, including Cam Smith (South Carolina), Keelee Ringo (Georgia), and Eli Ricks (Alabama).

This preseason recognition is no surprise, as Johnson has been one of the best defensive backs in the nation dating back to last season, primarily playing in the slot cornerback position for the Aggies, recording 79 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and 1 interception during the 2021 season, resulting in PFF grades of 84.7 in total defense, and an 88.7 coverage grade.

Johnson is also expected to enter the NFL draft after the 2022 season as one of the highest-graded cornerback prospects due to his speed, quickness, length, and coverage ability, with the versatility to potentially play safety depending on the team that ends up selecting him. Currently, Johnson is seen as a high to mid-first-round draft pick with the opportunity to bolster his stock and add on to what was already a stellar 2021 season, playing with one of the deepest and most talented defensive backfields in the nation.

Antonio Johnson truly exemplifies what it means to be an Aggie, and has already created a legacy for himself as one of the hardest working players to ever wear the maroon and white, and with all the expectations coming his way as we inch closer and closer to the new season, I can safely say that Johnson will give it everything he has every Saturday, and make it known that he is one of the best players in the entire college football landscape.

Three Aggies named to Phil Steeles preseason All-American teams

Three Aggies named to Phil Steeles preseason All-American teams

Every summer, legendary sports writer Phil Steele names his college football preseason All-American team, representing the entire college football landscape and giving a number of high-profile players the recognition they deserve as they continue to work towards their goals for the upcoming season.

For Texas A&M, the expectations have never been higher, and as many observers see the defense as the strength of the team, Steele believes otherwise, selecting three Aggies on the offensive side of the ball, and three names that every Texas A&M fan will likely agree deserves the most representation:

  1. Devon Achane (Fourth Team All-Purpose Back): During the 2020 season, tallied 43 rushes for 364 yards and 4 touchdowns, with 5 receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown. He shared snaps with former Aggies running back, Isaiah Spiller, recording 130 rushes for 910 yards and 9 touchdowns, and 24 receptions for 261 yards and a touchdown while returning a kick return for a touchdown against Alabama on October 9th
  2. Ainias Smith (Third Team Wide Reciever): Broke out as a receiver during the 2020 season, accumulating 43 receptions for 564 yards and 6 touchdowns, also running the ball  49 times for 293 yards for 4 touchdowns. He was the starting slot receiver during the 2021 season, recording 47 receptions for 509 yards and 6 touchdowns, and notching 8 rushing attempts for 26 yards on the year. He was also the primary punt returner, returning 23 punts for 259 yards and a touchdown.
  3. 3. Layden Robinson (Second Team Offensive guard): During the 2020 season, Robinson appeared in 10 games, playing 32 snaps at the right guard position, starting at right guard the next season in a permanent fashion. Robinson had his best season to date in 2021, starting 10 of 12 games (sustained an injury that resulted in two missed games) at the right guard spot, and was recognized by the coaching staff at the end of the season with the Offensive Toughness Award and Offensive Aggie Award for strength & conditioning at the annual Aggie football team banquet at the end of the season. Robinson is one of the top offensive line prospects going into the 2022 season.

Aggies drop College World Series opener to Oklahoma

Aggies drop College World Series opener to Oklahoma

The Aggies dropped their first game in the 2022 College World Series – a 13-8 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners. After sweeping their way through the College Station Regional and College Station Super Regional, being on the losing end of results has foreign since May 28th.

Aggies starter Nathan Dettmer got off to a rocky start and it seemed to be 5-0 before viewers settled into their seats. Joseph Menefee was looked at for relief much earlier than anticipated and the score became 8-0 before the Aggies could get their second at-bat.

This group will never be one to give up, rattling off three of their own in the bottom of the second, but the top of the 4th-inning seemed to make a potential comeback nearly impossible when four more runs were given up and Oklahoma found themselves leading 12-3. That 4th-inning proved to be the difference as a four-run 7th-inning cut the deficit to four, only for the Aggies to give up one final run in the ninth.

A reason for optimism, you ask? The Aggies have only conceded two consecutive losses ONE time this season – back-to-back losses at Alabama in early April. While it was a tough outing today, the fight to remain in this game – and prevent a complete and ugly rout – is something to hang our hats on.

Playing out of the Elimination Bracket is no easy feat, but I’ll take this group to keep their season alive on June 19th when they take on the University of Texas at 2:00 PM ET/1:00 PM CT on ESPN. The fight to continue their journey in Omaha will be on the line!

Aggies land in ‘Top-6’ for 2023 5-star wide receiver

Aggies land in ‘Top-6’ for 2023 5-star wide receiver, Brandon Innis

Brandon Innis one of the best overall prospects in the 2023 class, and is the #2 wide receiver recruit in the country. Coming fresh off a 2022 class where Texas A&M landed not one but two 5-star wide receivers, head coach Jimbo Fisher is back at it again.

Innis, the #4 recruit in the state of Florida, played varsity football as an 8th grader, and is ready to continue his career at the college level.

The Aggies are listed in Innis’ top 6 options along with:

If the Aggies are able to pickup a commitment from Innis, they’ll be on their way to another top class in 2023, as Jimbo and company continue the journey towards building a consistent college football playoff contender.

Jimbo Fisher football camp – Thursday highlights

Jimbo Fisher football camp – Thursday highlights

Jimbo Fisher Football Camp created plenty of positive headlines following Thursday’s morning session as many impressive prospects went to work in College Station.

As the second wave of prospective student-athletes worked with the Aggies’ staff in positions drills and cross-over work, there was more than enough to like about this group on Thursday.

With one of the main goals of camp being to evaluate these young men on the playing field, notable prospects found themselves in Jimbo’s office to hear that they’ve received an offer to be the future of Texas A&M football.

Check-out some notable prospects and live reps from camp action in Aggieland.

Where does Joel Klatt rank A&M headed into the 2022 season?

See where the Aggies landed in Joel Klatt’s pre-season rankings.

It’s summer time, and while the college sports world is turning their attention towards Omaha, and the College World Series, the college football season is right around the corner. With that, come the waves of pre-season rankings.

In fact, everyone and their great aunt has a list of who they believe will be the best teams in college football in the upcoming season, and who will contend for, and potentially win the College Football Playoff.

On Tuesday, Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt joined the party, tweeting out his five favorite teams headed into the 2022 season and A&M was on the list!

Let’s take a look to see where the Aggies rank:

How did the Aggies fare against the College World Series field in 2022?

How did the Aggies fare against the seven other College World Series contenders in 2022?

With half of the 2022 College World Series field members of the SEC – all of which residing in the SEC West, ironically enough – one would think the Aggies benefitted in the scouting department. Unfortunately, of the four SEC programs, A&M is the only member school in Bracket #1.

Nonetheless, the Aggies recorded the most wins (6) and share the best winning percentage with Oklahoma (0.60) against the field in their 2022 regular season – albeit facing only one opponent in their current bracket, a 12-9 victory at Texas’ UFCU Disch-Falk Field on March 29th.

As previously stated, with the three remaining SEC schools playing in the SEC West – Arkansas, Auburn and Ole Miss – the Aggies played a best-of-three series against each of them: a 2-1 series loss against Auburn in late March, a 2-1 series win against Arkansas in late April, and a 2-1 series win at Ole Miss in their last regular-season series before the SEC Tournament.

Thus with some unfamiliar faces standing in A&M’s path to the Championship Series, the scouting department will be hard at work, as will the student-athletes learning their opponent, until opening pitch on Friday afternoon as the Aggies take on Oklahoma at 2PM ET on ESPN.
