Cowboys News: Possible COVID fine for Cooper, Fassel stands by Zuerlein, should Dallas sign Antonio Brown?

The Cowboys roster thins out further for Week 18, Antonio Brown could be a fix for the Dallas offense, and a maskless Amari makes waves. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Twenty-two months after the pandemic started, COVID is wreaking more havoc with the Cowboys than ever. Two new starters have tested positive; they’ll join Micah Parsons in watching the season finale from home. Amari Cooper, who’s already missed time with the virus, could soon be missing a nice chunk of change for ignoring league rules about the virus. The COVID cases are already thinning the ranks of players available for Saturday’s game in Philadelphia; four additional key contributors are questionable with other issues.

Elsewhere, the Cowboys coordinators say they’re locked on the Eagles despite the Jaguars holding on Line 1, we’re troubleshooting Dak Prescott and what he needs to do to get back on track for the postseason, John Fassel is standing by his kicker after an up-and-down year, and whatever happened to that promise by Jerry Jones to put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor? We’re giving out final grades for the Arizona loss, remembering an unsung hero of the first great Cowboys teams, and cracking open a cold one developed by the most decorated passer in team history. Here are the News and Notes.

Cowboys News: Parsons on COVID list, DFW hosting another Super Bowl?

COVID continues to impact the landscape of individual teams and now it’s spread could be changing February plans for the league as a whole. | From @StarConscience

Micah Parsons is two sacks away from breaking the NFL’s rookie record but unfortunately, the sensation will likely miss out on his opportunity to achieve the milestone. His status for the Week 18 regular season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles in doubt. COVID cases are rising across the country and while the focus has been on how individual absences can affect any team, it could also lead to a change of venue for the Super Bowl. A possible replacement destination? AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys are 11-5 and heading to the playoffs but they have been consistently inconsistent, leading to questions to how far they can advance. Kicker Greg Zuerlein being a major liability heading in the playoffs, observations from the Cowboys loss to the Cardinals, and more highlight the news and notes.

Cowboys News: OL’s mediocrity, Elliott’s struggles, Zuerlein’s misses

With 52 penalties, the O-line is a shell of its former self, Zeke wants 1,000 yards, and the photo the Cowboys never wanted you to see. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys have a postseason berth sewn up… but things in Dallas feel like they’re coming apart at the seams. The outlook around the team is downright dire following a Week 17 letdown against Arizona, with plenty of blame to go around. Is it an offensive line that is now just a shell of its former self? Is it an ineffective run game? An offensive coordinator who’s in over his head? The kicker who’s having consistency issues? It just might be all of the above… at the worst possible time.

Elsewhere, Dak Prescott’s Comeback Player of the Year campaign isn’t such a sure thing anymore, Blake Jarwin is closer to a return just as Dalton Schultz is coming into his own, and the team takes a tumble in the power rankings. Jerry Jones wants to play the starters against Philadelphia, Ezekiel Elliott wants 1,000 yards, and Nate Newton achieves football immortality. All that, plus the story behind the 44-year-old photo that the Cowboys never wanted you to see. That’s all up in News and Notes.

News: Cowboys starters to play, Eagles’ COVID list grows, seeding scenarios

Dallas plans to play its starters in Week 18, while Philly is running out of starters. Fallout from Sunday’s loss, plus playoff what-ifs. | From @ToddBrock24f7

To play or not to play the starters. That is always the question this time of year. With their playoff berth secured and their seeding largely out of their hands, the Cowboys won’t benefit much from putting their A-team on the field on Philadelphia in Week 18. But they plan to anyway. Their opponent, meanwhile, may not have very many starters to work with after the Eagles added a dozen to its COVID list on Monday. Oh, and the game will be played a day earlier than originally thought.

Meanwhile, lots to unpack from Sunday’s fall-flat performance against Arizona, including confirming the worst news for Michael Gallup, rehashing the officials’ role in the loss, finding a bright spot, and what the result means now for the Cowboys’ playoff seeding. Blake Jarwin is nearing a return, Kellen Moore will be interviewing with Jacksonville during the short week, and we now know who (almost) all the Cowboys’ opponents will be in 2022. All that, plus a few more Madden stories with Cowboys connections. That’s ahead in News and Notes.

Cowboys GameDay News: Dan Reeves passes, 53-man roster shuffle for flexed Cardinals game

The Cowboys are all set to take on the Arizona Cardinals but they and the NFL world mourn a family member. | From @StarConscience

While the Cowboys were deep in preparation for their big Sunday matchup, the NFL world was shaken by a second major passing in less than a week. Former Cowboys’ running back and assistant coach Dan Reeves sadly lost his life on Saturday at the age of 77. Reeves had been a part of nine Super Bowl appearances, the majority with Dallas.

Wide receiver Amari Cooper calls this season’s version of the Cowboys rare and he recognizes the opportunity they have to achieve something special as one of the top contenders in the NFC. Cornerback Trevon Diggs has terrorized quarterbacks all season by snagging 11 interceptions, and he recently spoke on how Cowboys’ secondary coach Al Harris and his guidance have gotten his game to its current and future levels. A look at how COVID and injury have shaped the Cowboys’ 53-man roster for Week 17, especially at linebacker, keys to victory and more highlight the news and notes for the first game of the new year.

Cowboys News: Prescott’s legs, Lawrence’s foot, rugby technique pushing run game

Team leaders telling teammates to be smart with COVID, New Year’s; plus a punt block for TD sparks debate regarding the players’ bet. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Dak Prescott torched the Washington Football Team on Sunday, racking up passing stats good enough to earn him yet another weekly award and move him higher in the Top 10 of quarterbacks leaguewide. But it may actually be his legs that prove to be the missing piece to the offensive puzzle this season.

Elsewhere, we look at Wednesday’s practice for status updates on Tyron Smith and DeMarcus Lawrence, plus several Cowboys players get roster upgrades as the Cardinals come to town. The math calls for a close game, and the locker room leaders are calling on their teammates to play it smart and safe this time of year as the stakes get ever higher. We’re looking at the rugby technique that is helping push the Dallas run game in short-yardage situations, debating whether the special teams’ punt block-for-TD should count (and for whom) in the players’ popular bet, and examining Dan Quinn’s reported decline of the offer to interview before the end of the season in Jacksonville. All that, plus mock drafting in the Sooner State. Here’s the News and Notes.

News: Cowboys clinch playoff spot, Cooper frustrated with offense

The Cowboys will make their first playoff appearance since 2018. Amari Cooper is frustrated with his lack of opportunities lately. Meanwhile, Randy Gregory’s journey has come along swimmingly. | From @StarConscience

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t played in Week 16 yet, but still had their ticket to the postseason punched for the first time since 2018. Wide receiver Amari Cooper has seen his targets take quite the dip over the last month, and the four-time Pro Bowl selection voiced his displeasure on Thursday stating he feels he can be a big help in crucial moments, especially on third downs.

Defensive end Randy Gregory is having the best season of his career in 2021 by tying several career highs with three games to play. He was rewarded for his efforts by being named an alternate for the Pro Bowl. The COVID train has yet again made another appearance on the Cowboys roster as free safety Malik Hooker and running back JaQuan Hardy tested positive for the virus which puts their availability for Week 16 in doubt. Film study of the Cowboys struggling offense, upcoming free agents set to hit the market in 2022, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence getting his groove back, and more sit at the forefront of this edition of the news and notes.

Cowboys News: Hooker’s impact, playing a home game in Mexico, offense back?

Washington made headlines in the wrong way, Malik Hooker is a budding star for Dan Quinn and the offense is on the right track in Dallas. | From @CDBurnett7

The Dallas Cowboys have a duel with the Washington Football Team coming up in Week 16 so it’s only right that Washington finds a way into the headline, even if it’s making fun of them. Somehow, the Football Team decided copying the Cowboys’ travel benches was a great idea and they’ll make the trip to Dallas after an unsuccessful stop in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Safety Malik Hooker has become a sight for Cowboys’ fans eyes with his physical ability and range on the field in Dan Quinn’s defense. After getting his first interception of the season with his opportunities growing, is this just the beginning of a career resurgence?

While the Dallas defense is the star of the show, rightfully so, the offense is getting its legs back. 21 points against New York isn’t perfect but in context, it’s a solid performance from an offense that has had their points boosted on the road thanks to defensive scores. It seems like an offensive explosion may soon arrive.

Cowboys News: Defensive dominance, playoff seeding scenarios, home-field value

The Cowboys’ ugly wins courtesy of the defense, moving up to No. 2 in the NFC and how Dallas’ offense needs home-field advantage. | From @CDBurnett7

The calling card of the 2021 Dallas Cowboys has become their gritty defense. Tied for the most takeaways and outright No. 1 in interceptions, Dallas’ backbone is no longer the offense that has carried them at times in recent seasons.

With this in mind, the defense has dominated on the road, relieving the Cowboys of any stress when the offense has lost their momentum and even put them in a hole like they did in Washington. The return of defensive end Demarcus Lawrence has been one of the biggest stories and the ugly wins have paid dividends, even moving Dallas up in seeding.

Tampa Bay and Arizona had tough losses in Week 15 and it’s moved the Cowboys up to No. 2 in the NFC and just a Green Bay loss from taking over the top spot. But can one of their final three opponents take down Aaron Rodgers? Looking at the Dallas offensive stats at home compared to away, it’s imperative to have the home-field advantage when the red-zone success is putrid on the road. Here are all the latest news and notes.

Cowboys Gameday News: Headlining LBs, Pollard’s return, No. 1 seed hopes

Micah Parsons’ haunting New York, Jaylon Smith facing Dallas, Tony Pollard’s return and No. 1 seed hopes in the Cowboys’ gameday news. | From @CDBurnett7

Front and center on Sunday for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants will be two linebackers headlining the contest. Jaylon Smith will be making his first appearance against the Cowboys while linebacker Micah Parsons will continue to haunt New York for passing on the DPOY candidate.

After avoiding COVID issues during the week, Dallas added two big pieces from their defense with hopes there isn’t a bigger outbreak on the horizon. On the plus side, running back Tony Pollard is making his return after a week off due to injury and a healthier Ezekiel Elliott makes for a return-to-form for a struggling rushing offense.

New York will have a long list of practice squad players seeing consistent snaps and the Cowboys just have to handle business in a potential win that would all but seal the NFC East and set Dallas’ focus towards stealing the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the playoffs.
