New Mexico State (0-3) vs South Carolina State (0-2) Game Preview

Why South Carolina State Will Win

It’s hard to have too much fun playing Clemson after it loses – the Bulldogs collected their paycheck in the 49-3 game – but the offense worked in a fun 42-41 loss to Alabama A&M.

The attack has enough of a balance to matter against a New Mexico State defense that’s not doing anything against the run. Worse yet, the offensive side can’t stop screwing up.

It’s bad enough to not have any running game, but the turnovers keep shooting the team in the foot.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why New Mexico State Will Win

There have been signs of life.

The Aggie offense was horrible in the opener against UTEP, but the passing attack pushed the San Diego State D a bit and the attack did enough to make New Mexico work.

South Carolina State is miserable on third downs. New Mexico State has to use this game to start going on a few decent, sustained drives, and the pass rush has to show up to get the D off the field.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the New Mexico State passing game be enough to overcome a slew of other problems?

South Carolina State’s secondary has been awful, but it’ll pick off a few passes to stay in this through the second half. Even so, NMSU will get a win – even if it’s not pretty.

San Diego State (0-0) vs New Mexico State (0-1) Game Preview

Why New Mexico State Will Win

So what went right in the 30-3 loss to UTEP?

Not much, but the defense was able to clamp down a bit in the second half, LB Trevor Brohard turned in a nice day, and …

That was about it. However, the Aggies got in a few games of work in the spring and have a date under its belt before dealing with San Diego State in a strange off-campus location while the new Aztec Stadium is being built.

This remains a San Diego State team that might have to find a consistently dangerous offense, it’s not going to be in familiar surroundings, and …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why San Diego State Will Win

The Aztecs should be able to run wild.

It’s a game to get the passing attack going before dealing with Arizona next week, but to end this fast, they should be able to get the offensive line in place right away for the combination of backs to rip through at will.

UTEP was able to run for close to five yards per carry and showed the type of explosion to the passing game it hasn’t come up with in a long, long time.

Oh yeah, and …

Week 1 NFL Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Be amazed if the San Diego State defense allowed more than 200 yards of total New Mexico State offense.

The secondary has to undergo a bit of an overhaul, but the line is quick, the linebackers can pop, and this should be over by the end of the first quarter.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UTEP (0-0) vs New Mexico State (0-0) Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

The running game should be just good enough to control the game.

New Mexico State’s defense was a disaster in 2019, the team didn’t play in 2020, and the D struggled against FCS teams in its modified spring season, allowing over five yards per carry with five touchdowns in the two games. UTEP isn’t exactly going to be all ground-and-pound, but Deion Hankins is a solid back in a good rotation working behind a veteran offensive front.

The passing attack should be just good enough to keep things moving. The experienced receiving corps should be able to take over once the NMSU defense starts to pay more attention to the ground attack.

On the flip side …

Week 1 College Football Schedule

Why New Mexico State Will Win

The spring games really should matter.

The Aggies might not have played all that well, but considering them live scrimmages for the coaching staff to see what it had to work with.

The offensive line has a few nice parts to build around – Sage Doxtater is a fringe-flier NFL left tackle prospect and former Ole Miss Rebel Eli Johnson is a veteran center who knows what he’s doing.

The quarterback situation will be interesting all throughout the first part of the season, but the JUCO transfer Jonah Johnson has size and upside, and Weston Eget got in some work this spring. They’re not coming in cold.

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico State might have the experience from spring ball, but the two performance against FCS teams were hardly inspiring.

UTEP has more experience, enough depth to matter, and more playmakers and offensive options. The Miners won’t dominate, but they should be able to control the game throughout.

New Mexico State has won three straight in the series, but the O won’t get going in this until it’s too late.

2021 CFN Independent Preseason Rankings

1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Quick Take: There’s a consistency to the Irish now under Brian Kelly with four straight double-digit win seasons and five in the last six, and this year’s team should get there again with a schedule that’s a wee bit easier than it looks. The defensive ends are good, S Kyle Hamilton is great, and the success will be there on offense even if it’s more steady than sensational.
Notre Dame Preview | Schedule

2. Liberty Flames

Quick Take: Just about everyone is back, the skill guys around star QB Malik Willis are outstanding, and there’s a buzz after a breakthrough 2020. Talent-wise it’s a good team, but there’s a little national roll-slowing needing to be done when comparing it to the top 25ish Power Five programs. However, with the veterans in place – and with a manageable schedule – another one-loss season is a doable goal.
Liberty Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532590]

3. BYU Cougars

Quick Take: If was the common refrain last year – “But they didn’t play a Power Five program.” Well, now they do – it wasn’t the Cougars’ fault that no one wanted to play them, by the way – and without Zach Wilson under center. This is still a terrific team with plenty of great parts, but the schedule is tougher – seven Power Five teams on the slate – and there’s some reloading to do.
BYU Preview | Schedule

4. Army Black Knights

Quick Take: Expect a fantastic record thanks to a manageable schedule, but, as always, the O will control the clock and tempo against just about everyone. Also, as always, they’re going to be a very, very tough out for the better teams on the schedule.
Army Preview | Schedule

5. New Mexico State Aggies

Quick Take: The Aggies had the benefit of a spring preseason with a few games to see what they have in place to work with. The answers weren’t all that great, but they have a few explosive parts and should have just enough of an offense to pull off a few wins.
New Mexico Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532468]

6. UConn Huskies

Quick Take: After not playing last year, this is almost a new team in several spots around a few terrific parts. There are just enough good players to build around, but it’s going to be a rough, rough run saved by two FCS games and a few more winnable dates.
UConn Preview | Schedule

7. UMass Minutemen

Quick Take: The bar is set at just scoring. The Minutemen went 0-4 last year against four Group of Five programs, and they were outscored 161-12 with just one touchdown. The defensive side has some decent parts, but it’s going to be a bloodbath offensively over the first half of the season before things ease up.

QB Malik Willis, Jr. Liberty

The former Auburn Tiger has turned into a superstar and interesting pro prospect for Liberty. He’s not huge, but the 6-1, 215-pounder is one of the nation’s top dual-threat playmakers, throwing for well over 2,000 yards with 20 touchdowns along with 944 rushing yards and 14 scores last season. He’s got everyone around him to do even more.

2021 Preseason CFN Independent Defensive Player of the Year

S Kyle Hamilton, Jr. Notre Dame

Hamilton might not be the best defensive player in college football, but he’s not far off. When it comes to what you want in a next-level safety, here you go – 6-4, 219-pound size, big-time hitting skills, range, and the smarts and instincts to always be in the right position. He’s about to get an even higher profile as the star of a rebuilding Irish team.

New Mexico State Aggies College Football Preview 2021: Offense

New Mexico State got the luxury of a dry run. It might have been off in all of 2020, but it got two games of a preseason in 2021, getting shockingly roasted by Tarleton State 43-17 and beating Dixie State 36-29. The offense basically had a few live scrimmages, and now the coaching staff has a better handle on what it has to work with.

Former JUCO transfer Jonah Johnson is a 6-3, 235-pound passer who threw three picks with a touchdown pass in the two games of work, and he adds a little bit of mobility and power around the goal line. He struggled against Tarleton State, but was solid against Dixon State. Fellow big passer Weston Eget is an option, but Johnson should be the main man.

The top three wide receivers from 2019 are gone, but Terrell Warner is a big former JUCO transfer who led the way with eight catches in the early games, and he’s surrounded by more transfers who should help. Cole Harrity had his moments and Robert Downs is the leading returning receiver from 2019.

The offensive line has a few decent options, but the pass protection will be a work in progress. 6-7, 350-pound tackle Sage Doxtater is one of the only returning starters from 2019, there’s hope for JUCO transfer Stephawn Thompson to grow into a guard job, and former Ole Miss center Eli Johnson has the size and just enough experience to be okay.

Jason Huntley was one of the team’s bright spots in 2019, rushing for over 1,000 yards with nine touchdowns. He’s done, but NMSU is able to run a bit.

Juwaun Price is a quick back who averaged close to six yards per carry and Alex Escobar stepped up with 81 yards in his lone appearance against Dixie State. The real hope is for Michigan transfer O’Maury Samuels to step in and take over the gig right away – he wasn’t around for the spring games.

New Mexico State (0-0) vs Tarleton State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Tarleton State Will Win

How quickly can the Texans get back up off the mat after a brutal double-overtime loss to McNeese State to start the 2021 season?

They had it. Everything was working, they were up 14 late, and then came the total collapse. However, on the plus side, the passing game was good, the ground game was able to balance things out, and there was enough of an offense to make this a fight against a New Mexico State team that’s going to be …

Interesting. (More on that in a moment.)

Why New Mexico State Will Win

The Aggies are still the FBS team here, and Tarleton State is still just one game into its life in the FCS.

For all of NMSU’s problems and issues, it has a few decent parts starting with OT Sage Doxtater and what should be an improved line to provide a push for former Michigan RB O’Maury Samuels and JUCO transfer QB Jonah Johnson.

It might take a while for everyone to warm up, but as the McNeese State game showed, it takes a full 60 minutes and the Aggies have more talent. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Really, how is New Mexico State going to play this?

First, because it can’t play in the state of New Mexico this will be in El Paso. The second part of all this is the attitude towards this spring season. Head coach Doug Martin and the staff will use this like a punched-up version of spring football, and while that means keeping everyone healthy is the key, the program needs the work.

How long will the Aggie starters really go?

As long as they have to. It would be ugly if the FBSer loses this.

NMSU gets UTEP in the opener of the regular Fall season, but they’re on the road in four of the next five games before getting Dixie State as a layup in Las Cruces. There’s no time off to enjoy the trip to Hawaii – they get the Rainbow Warriors at home earlier in the year – and there’s really no fun going to Alabama and Kentucky in back-to-back weeks.

However, there’s a winnable game against UMass to close things out to potentially have something positive to close with.
