Can the Rams rebound after a beating from Duke?

WHO: Omaha Mavericks (2-1) vs. Colorado State Rams (1-1)

WHEN: Wednesday, November 13 — 7:00 PM MT/6:00 PM PT

WHERE: Moby Arena; Fort Collins, Colorado (8,745)

STREAM: Stadium

RADIO: Omaha | Colorado State

SERIES RECORD: Colorado State leads the series 2-0

ODDS: Colorado State -6 per VegasInsider.com

The Colorado State Rams return home to Moby Arena to face the Omaha Mavericks. The Rams are coming off a 89-55 loss to Duke, while the Mavericks are coming off a 90-61 victory over Bethune-Cookman.

The Rams had a kind of a let down performance against Duke, but that was to be expected with such a young team. “I really like my team. I thought our young guys got a ton of experience out there today,” CSU coach Niko Medved told the Coloradoan.

The CSU freshman are going to need to grow up throughout this season in order for the Rams to be successful. The two standouts so far are Isaiah Stevens and David Roddy. Stevens looks to be a good complement to Kendle Moore and Roddy plays bigger than he is; both had 12 points against Duke.

Nico Carvacho had a quiet 11 point, nine rebound night against the Blue Devils. Carvacho is going to need to put that game behind him as he will most likely be matched up against Matt Pile. The Mavericks big man is averaging 14.3 ppg and 10.3 rpg.

Colorado State is favored coming into this game. But if they play sloppy basketball, Pile, JT Gibson, and Ayo Akinwole will make them pay. If the Rams can communicate and play solid defense they should walk away with the win.

Expect a dog fight, with the Rams pulling away at the end. CSU 75-67 Omaha.

Indiana fans loved to see Kentucky’s embarrassing loss to Evansville

No. 1 Kentucky was stunned on its home floor by Evansville on Tuesday.

For the first time in program history, Evansville toppled a AP-ranked team on the road. That team happened to be the No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats, a favorite to win the national championship at the end of the season.

Last season, the Purple Aces won just 11 games, and were picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference this year. Evansville didn’t catch fire from the floor – the Purple Aces shot 38 percent from the field – or win on a fluke buzzer-beater, they outworked the top-ranked team in the nation and played excellent defense at Rupp Arena to pull off a historic upset. For Kentucky, it was the first time the Wildcats had ever lost at home as a No. 1 team to a non-conference opponent, according to ESPN Stats and Info.

College basketball fans roasted Kentucky online, and Indiana fans at Assembly Hall chanted “Evansville” during the Hoosiers’ blowout win on Tuesday.

WHERE: Dreamstlye Arena – The Pit, Albuquerque, NM (15,411)

SERIES RECORD: This is the first meeting between the University of New Mexico and the University of Green Bay.

ODDS: New Mexico -12, per KenPom

PREVIEW: The New Mexico Lobos stay home for a third straight game in a four-game home stand to start the season, hosting the Green Bay Phoenix in non-conference play on Wednesday, November 13 at Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit in Albuquerque.

New Mexico has gone 2-0 to open the season while Green Bay is 1-1 on the season. Most recently, the Lobos had a solid outing against Cal State Northridge, beating the Matadors 97-70 behind a steady offense and stretches of a strong defense. Green Bay last played Wisconsin-Stout, a 115-64 rout against the Division III University.

Through their 2-0 start, New Mexico has been led by Carlton Bragg (15.0 points, 5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks per game) and Corey Manigault (15.0 points 1.5 blocks per game), though six Lobos have averaged double figures in scoring through the small sample size of contests. JaQuan Lyle has demonstrated his passing prowess as advertised, leading the way with 8.0 assists per game through the first two games.

So far the offense has been clicking for New Mexico, averaging a scorching NCAA-leading 60.0% field goal percentage and 22 assists through its two wins (yes the strength of schedule isn’t great and its a very small sample, but still something for the Cherry and Silver to be encouraged about).

So far for Green Bay, scoring has been very evenly distributed through the roster with Kameron Hankerson (12.5 points per game) and Freshman Amari Davis (12.5 points, 1.5 steals per game) leading the Phoenix.

Prior to Green Bay’s blowout win over Wisconsin-Stout, the Phoenix struggled against a good Purdue team to open the season, a 79-57 loss, making it hard to say where this team sits in the fabric of college basketball. Being among the top 30 or so teams in returning minutes should help Green Bay to be competitive in most games, including against New Mexico.

New Mexico’s oft employed start-to-finish full-court press that Weir stuck to in his first two years with the program has not been seen much in New Mexico’s first two games. Instead, he has made a point to help his team improve its half-court defense.

So will this be the first game we’ll see the full-court press?

Noting that the first two teams have been quicker teams, and that his team has struggled against quicker opponents, Paul Weir noted, “Right now, to me, we’ve got to, as a team – whether we’re matchups or no matchups – we would be playing this way (emphasizing half court defense) regardless of anybody because we need to learn to get stops in the half court and as we expand it going forward, we may or may not . . .”

For New Mexico, this is looking like one of those quadrant 4 type games against a team with enough pieces coming back to cause a little bit of trouble if the defense isn’t there. Like I said in a previous article predicting New Mexico’s postseason chances, this is just the kind of game New Mexico can’t lose to look good to the selection committee because of its relatively limited supply of quadrant 1 and 2 games.

As expected, seniors JaQuan Lyle and Carlton Bragg have been key components to New Mexico’s early wins and should continue to produce at a high level. Corey Manigault has shown a high degree of offensive efficiency. His 15.0 points per game have been accomplished in just 18.0 minutes per game with a field goal percentage of 70.6%.

If New Mexico’s excellent inside-out game and ability to move the ball become the story of this game, even an off-night defensively might keep Green Bay in check.

But it’s probably better to be safe and just continue working the half-court defense.

Injuries/Roster Updates:

  • New Mexico: 6’0″ point guard Drue Drinnon has entered the transfer portal to be closer to family. No injuries reported.
  • Green Bay: No injuries reported.

A Jalen Harris Return Was Just What The Doctor Ordered.

Recap: Nevada 80, Texas-Arlington 73

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

Jalen Harris’ presence was definitely felt as Nevada gets a win against UT-Arlington.

After almost two years away from the game Jalen Harris got to play his first full game of basketball on Tuesday night in the Lawlor Events center against a scrappy UT-Arlington Mavericks squad, and he didn’t disappoint. The former Louisiana Tech Bulldog has been a heralded transfer sitting on the bench in Reno since back under the last coaching staff. Many have waited to see Harris on the court and for those of us who watched the season opener anxiously against Utah, we felt a bit cheated.

Harris left that game in the first half and didn’t return going scoreless on 0-4 shooting and wore a boot on his right foot the remainder of the night.

After undergoing X-ray testing last week which came back negative for any kind of broken bones, Harris was scheduled to undergo MRI testing this week. But surprised fans by showing up in the starting line up tonight against the Mavericks.

The junior guard led this Wolf Pack team with 24 points while grabbing 9 rebounds. His scoring provided a much needed break for senior guard Lindsey Drew (7 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists) who was our Mountain West Wire Player of the Week.

Nevada needed another scoring option to go a long with Lindsey Drew and Jazz Johnson, who scored 16 points going 5-11 from the field Tuesday night. Having Harris as a reliable third scoring option changed the offensive dynamic on the court and relieved Johnson and Drew of having to create scoring opportunities for themselves.

Help also came from senior guard Nisre Zouzoua who had a season high 16 points on 6-8 shooting and junior forward Robby Robinson helped out with 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Texas-Arlington looked good in the first half, keeping the game close and exchanging the lead throughout the second half. Radshad Davis led the Mavericks with a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds. Big man Jabari Narcis had 11 points on the night, which included 3 three pointers to go a long with 9 rebounds. Sunbelt preseason first-team guard Brian Warren had a tough night going 1-12 from the field ending up with 5 points.

Steve Alford’s squad still seems to be getting use to each other’s play in live game situations and some guys are getting used to playing at the division one level. But they are doing a great job making adjustments during games and are 2-1 on the season. With Harris back and other players stepping up, it is going to be fun watching this team grow this season.

Next up: The Wolf Pack hosts Southern California on Saturday at home before heading on the road to face Davidson in North Carolina next week. The Trojans boast a fantastic freshmen front court and will be the biggest test of the season for the Wolf Pack thus far.

Aggies set to terminate an old rival Tuesday night before returning to Disney+ binge

WHO: No. 17 Utah State (2-0) vs Denver (1-1)

WHEN: Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7pm (MST)

WHERE: Logan, Utah • Dee Glen Smith Spectrum (10,270)

TV: MW Network

RADIO: Aggie Sports Network

SERIES RECORD: USU leads the all-time series 54-37, including a 19-5 advantage at home.

ODDS: Utah State -23.5

Preview

A pair of throwback rivals will face off tonight in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum for the 92nd time in series history. The Denver Pioneers, winners of three straight against the Aggies, are fresh off a double-digit win over UVU. The Aggies, still ranked no. 17 in the country, were last seen discarding Weber State like a used dryer sheet.

The name to know heading into this Tuesday night matchup is Ade Murkey, a four-year starter and leader of an otherwise young rotation reaching at least nine players deep. Murkey averaged 11.5 ppg last season and boasts a blazing hot start this fall with 48% fg shooting against Denver’s first two opponents (Colorado State, Utah Valley).

Joseph Lanzi and Jase Townsend are expected to handle the bulk of the non-Murkey points scored for the Pioneers, combining for 38 against the Wolverines last week.

With some familiarity between USU’s coach Craig Smith and Summit League opponents from his days at South Dakota, this should prove to be a matchup full of rich storylines for fans to explore while the Aggies run another team out of the building by halftime.

Utah State is off to a healthy 2-0 start to justify its preseason ranking, albeit one that included a scare against Montana State in the season opener. Paraphrasing coach Smith in this week’s press conference, a handful of games every year seem to showcase a team’s floor and potential ceiling — and it appears USU has already given fans a peek at both.

The Aggies average 85 points per game through two games this season while shooting over 47% from the field and holding opponents to just 33% shooting. Also worthy of note — after only 13 assists against Montana State, coach Smith’s increased emphasis on ball movement and exploiting open backdoor cuts produced 26 assists on 37 made shots against Weber State.

Saturday’s matchup against the Wildcats also produced several opportunities for the USU supporting cast to really shine. Abel Porter recorded his first double-double, Justin Bean lead all scorers with 18 mere days after oral surgery corrected his front teeth getting bashed in and Utah State captured its largest margin of victory over a D-I opponent in nearly 50 years.

Sam Merrill’s continued excellence and starts from regulars Porter, Bean and Brock Miller should serve up an easy win tonight as the Aggies continue their five-game home-stand to kick off the year. Expect also to see big man Kuba Karwowski in the starting lineup while Neemias Queta nurses a knee injury still without a timetable.

Prediction:

Utah State 86, Denver 57

Mountain West Wire’s Player of The Year Watch List: Week One

We are tracking each Mountain West performance of this week to determine the player of the year.

[jwplayer 18QegcJn-sNi3MVSU]

Mountain West Wire’s Player of The Year Watch List: Week One

Take A Look At Who Played Well for Mountain West Teams In Week One.

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

Who is in the running for Player of the Year?

The staff at the Mountain West Wire wanted to do something a little different this year. We are going to keep track of the top performers from teams around the Mountain West throughout the year and vote on who had the best performances that week.

How It Works:

Each person will award 15 points in total to five players and should award it as so:

1st place (Player of the week): 5 pts

2nd place: 4 pts

3rd place: 3 pts

4th place: 2 pts

5th place: 1 pt

The player with the most points total will be our player of the week and we will keep track of the point totals every week so that the player who has the most at the end of the year will receive the Mountain West Wire Player of the Year award. Just copy the players below and type your names above it like we do for the pick them docs we get and award your points.

Now some guys made the list and others didn’t. A big thing to think about was consistency throughout the week. Something that hurt some guys was having a decent game one day and a bad one the other day. Guys who made the list had a great game one day and a good one on other days, or good games both days.

This column will come out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings depending on how late some games finish on Sundays.

The order for the first week is as follows:

1. Lindsey Drew, senior guard Nevada (5 points):

30 Points 8 Assists 6 Rebounds against Utah

24 Points 9 Rebounds 7 Assists against Loyola Marymount

2. Derrick Alston Jr, junior guard BSU (4 points):

25 Points 5 Rebounds 4 Assists against Life-Pacific

28 Points 2 Rebounds against Oregon

3. Amauri Hardy, junior guard UNLV (3 points):

15 Points 6 Assists 5 Rebounds against Purdue Fort-Wayne

27 Points 4 Rebounds 3 Assists against Kansas State

4. Jordan Schakel, junior guard SDSU (2 points):

15 Points 4 Rebounds 2 Assists against Texas Southern

19 Points 5 Rebounds against Brigham Young

5. Sam Merrill, senior guard USU (1 point):

28 Points 5 Rebounds 3 Assists against Montana State

14 Points 6 Rebounds 6 Assists against Weber State

Take a look at each team’s opponents for this week and how they did last week.

We seek to take a look at each team’s opponents for the next week while also taking a look at their performance the previous week. These should be coming out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings going forward until the end of non-conference play depending on possible late night games on Sunday or not. And then traditional previews will take over since with conference play comes more familiarity with opponents.

Air Force Falcons

Tues, Nov. 12th

Army Black Knights:

Coach K’s alma mater is 1-1 on the season but that lone win comes against the US Merchant Marine Academy. That lone loss came at the hands of 10th ranked Villanova by 43 points. They are led by senior guard Tommy Funk who is averaging 13.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 4.5 APG. These military academy games mean a lot to these schools and I look forward to the Falcons taking the Black Knights on at home.

Boise State Broncos

Fri, Nov. 15th

California-Irvine Anteaters:

The Anteaters will face a familar face to Boise State fans in Life-Pacific on Tuesday. But after that they take on Boise State in The Taco Bell Arena on Friday. Irvine is 1-1 so far downing San Diego on opening night and losing to Pepperdine on Saturday by 3 points in Malibu. UC-Irvine is led by senior guard Evan Leonard who is averaging 19.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 2.0 APG through two games.

Colorado State Rams

Wed, Nov. 13th

Omaha Mavericks:

The Mavericks are 1-1 on the season but have not won against a division one team thus far. They are led by junior guard Ayo Akinwole who is averaging 16.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 7.0 APG through two games and has junior forward Matt Pile who is averaging a double-double (14.0 PPG and 12.0 RPG).

Sat, Nov. 16th

Loyola Marymount Lions:

Loyola Marymount is coming off of a close loss to Nevada in Reno on Saturday which put them at 1-1 on the season. Eli Scott was the guy on Saturday but the Lions are actually led by sophomore forward Ivan Alipiev who is leading the team with 19.0 PPG and 7.5 RPG.

Fresno State Bulldogs

Tues, Nov. 12th

San Diego Torreros:

San Diego is in a bit of a rebuild after losing a talented group of seniors last year. They are 0-2 on the season and are led by sophomore guard Joey Calcaterra, who is averaging 16.0 PPG in both losses.

Sun, Nov. 17th

California State University San Bernardino Coyotes:

The Bulldogs take on an undefeated Coyotes team who have two wins against division two opponents. They are led by senior guard Jeremy Smith who is averaging 26 PPG through week one.

Nevada Wolf Pack

Tues, Nov. 12th

Texas-Arlington Mavericks:

The Mavericks are off to a great 2-0 start including a 14 point win against Tulsa on Saturday. Watch out for senior forward Jabari Narcis who is averaging 11.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG and 2.0 BPG. If he has a big night in the paint, the Wolf Pack don’t have enough front court depth to keep him in check.

Sat, Nov. 16th

Southern California Trojans:

As Andy Enfield’s seat started to get a bit hot in Los Angeles he went out and got one of the best recruiting classes in the last decade for the Trojans and it’s paying off. His team is being led by his two five star freshman Isaiah Mobley and Onyeka Okongwu, and Big O is showing dominant play while averaging a double-double (20.0 PPG and 11.5 RPG).

New Mexico Lobos

Wed, Nov. 13th

Green Bay Phoenix:

The Phoenix are 1-1 on the season after a 51 point win against Wisconsin-Stout and a loss at Purdue. Watch out for freshman guard Amari Davis who averaged 12.5 PPG in last weeks action and junior guard PJ Pipes who is averaging 2.5 SPG.

Sat, Nov. 16th

Mcneese State Cowboys:

The cowboys are 0-2 on the season and face Wisconsin on Wednesday before taking on the Lobos on Saturday. Look out for junior guard AJ Lawson who averaged 17.5 PPG in two games against Western Michigan and Louisiana Lafayette.

The Nevada Wolf Pack return to action on Tuesday night as they take on the Texas-Arlington Mavericks out of the Sun Belt Conference

The Wolf Pack come into this contest against the Mavericks with a 1-1 record after defeating the Loyola Marymount Lions 72-67 on Saturday night. In that contest against the Lions, Nevada point guard Lindsey Drew had another stellar performance.

Drew scored 24 points and tallied nine rebounds and seven assists in the victory over Loyola Marymount. Combine the performance against Loyola Marymount with his performance against Utah in the season opener, Drew is averaging 27.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists.

Because of Drew’s excellent play in the first two games of the season, he was named the Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday. Outside of Drew, the Wolf Pack are getting production from guard Jazz Johnson who is averaging 18.0 points per game and Nisre Zouzoua who is averaging nine points per game this early in the season.

The Wolf Pack take on a Texas-Arlington team that has a 2-0 record with victories of UT-Dallas and Tulsa. The Mavericks leading scorer is senior forward Jabari Narcis as he is averaging 11 points per game this season. Narcis also leads the team in rebounds and blocks as he is averaging 7.5 rebounds per game and two blocks per game for the Mavericks.

Outside of Narcis, the Mavericks are a balanced scoring team as they have seven players averaging between eight and 11 points per game. The Wolf Pack will have a challenge in going up against Narcis and the Mavericks on Tuesday night in Reno.

College Basketball Rankings: Utah State Remains No. 17 In AP Poll

Aggies go 2-0 and are No. 17

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Utah State remains in top 20

The first week of college basketball is in the books and there were not too many surprises that happened to shake up the rankings. The Champions Classic shuffled the top five since the top four teams played but that is about it.

Utah State is 2-0 after a fairly close win over Montana State and then the Aggies demolished in-state foe Weber State 89-34. Those results kept the Aggies at No. 17 in the latest rankings. The next chance for Utah State to make a move is when they take on No. 23 LSU but that game is not until Nov. 22 in a neutral site game in Jamaica.

San Diego State is getting som consideration by earning two points after wins vs. Texas Southern and a quality win on the road to defeat BYU, 76-71.

The Aztecs have just one game this week against Grand Canyon but they have struggled this year and are 0-2 with losses to Illinois and Davidson. So, a win over GCU may not have that big of an impact in the rankings.
