Oregon vs. Seton Hall

Out West there are just two teams left fighting for a spot in the Final Four. The Pac-12’s Oregon who is a four seed and Seton Hall from the Big East is a three seed.

If the Ducks win it will be the second time that Dana Altman led Oregon to the Final Four and the first time in four years. As for Seton Hall, if they win it will be the Pirates first Final Four since they made it to the national title 1989.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

Final Score: No. 4 Oregon, 84, No. 3 Seton Hall 72

Oregon returns to its first Final Four in four years after topping Seton Hall and it was a strong second half that saw the Ducks score 51 in the second half. The 23-4 run is how Oregon pulled away for the win and while the Pirates made a late surgery they were not able to make it close after that run.

Leading the way for Oregon was the trio of Payton Pritchard, Chris Duarte, and Anthony Mathis who combined for 54 points.

Then there were two teams.

The Sweet Sixteen is in the books of our NCAA Tournament simulation and in the South Region we were provided with two well known basketball names but their seeding does not reflect that this year. Arizona is a No. 7 seed and they are taking on No. 5 Ohio State. The winner moves onto the Final Four in Atlanta for this simulation.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

Final Score: No. 7 Arizona 108, No. 5 Ohio State 98

What a game! Arizona and Ohio State could not miss all afternoon in this game but Arizona missed less. The Wildcats had one of the best performances by shooting for 62.3 percent from the field compared to the Buckeyes who shot a very respectable 50 percent.

Both teams also shot 50 percent from three-point range with Arizona going 10 of 20 and Ohio State 14 of 28, but that amount from the Buckeyes was great but not enough.

The East region is complete and we have our regional champion.

The Sweet Sixteen is in the books of our NCAA Tournament simulation and in the East Region we were provided with a fan favorite this season in the Dayton Flyers the number one seed in the region, going up against a blue chip juggernaut in the Duke Blue Devils. Both vying for a trip down south to Atlanta, Georgia and a Final Four appearance.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

East Region

Final Score: No. 1 Dayton 93, No. 3 Duke 88

New York, NY–This one was a ratings booster as fans all around the country tuned in to watch an overtime thriller featuring the Flyers and Blue Devils in Madison Square Garden.

The game was hard-fought by both sides, as Duke took the lead going into half-time 43-36. But a half-time speech by Dayton head coach Anthony Grant fired the Flyers up as they retook the lead in the second half, outscoring Duke 43-36 to ultimately send this one into overtime.

A match up everyone was on the lookout for was in the post, as two potential future lottery picks in sophomore Obi Toppin and freshman Vernon Carey Jr. battled it out. On paper this battle was won by Carey Jr. junior who used a slight size advantage effectively all night, ending the game with 23 points, 13 rebounds and one block. But games are won by teams not individual players and Dayton outplayed Duke in overtime, outscoring them 14-9 to seal the victory.

It was a team effort by the Flyers who had four starters score 18-points or more on the night. Including two double-doubles, one by junior guard Jalen Crutcher who finished with 18-points and 11 assists. And the other by senior guard Trey Landers who finished the night with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Ultimately taking advantage of continuous Toppin double-teams to scoop up offensive boards and make second-chance baskets.

The Flyers advance to their first Final Four appearance since 1967 when Dayton beat North Carolina 76-62 to advance to the national champion. They would lose 64-79 to a legendary UCLA Bruins team that featured one of the best coaches to ever coach the game in John Wooden and one of the best to ever play the game Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Baylor, Ohio State, Arizona, Bradley

The South Region is up next with a Cinderella team in the mix with No. 14 seeded Bradley taking on a well-known but overachieving, relative to their seed, in the Arizona Wildcats.

The other half of this South bracket has top-seeded Baylor vs. No. 5 Ohio State in what should be a really good matchup for this round.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

Final score: No. 5 Ohio State 80, No. 1 Baylor vs. 71

Down goes another No. 1 seed as Ohio State takes out Baylor by nine points, and the victory came late in the game as the Buckeyes went on a run to pull away to get the win. The Buckeyes had as strong performance from Kaleb Wesson who had 22 points and eight rebounds in the win.

Final score: No. 7 Arizona 74,  No. 14 Bradley 55

The end is over for No. 14 seeded Bradley which lost by nearly 20 points to Arizona. All it took was the first half which saw the Wildcats race out to a 40-22 lead and never looked back.

Arizona was not great but Bradley was worse. The Wildcats shot just 44 percent from the field and made just 3 of 15 from beyond the arc. The Braves were 36 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range. It was just a very off night for Bradley and they also ran into just a better team in Arizona.

Oregon, LSU, Seton Hall, Texas Tech

The West Region is up next out in the Staple Centers and only one West Coast team is playing here with No. 4 seed Oregon. Another quirk is that the top two seeds have already been knocked out with Seton Hall as the top seed.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

Final Score: No. 4 Oregon 94, No. 8 LSU 93

This game ended up being one of the more exciting game to date in the NCAA Tournament with nearly each team scoring triple-digits. Oregon’s final two shots were huge with a three-pointer by Chris Duarte to tie the game with 13 seconds left to tie the game.

Skylar Mays made a pair of free throws but the final shot came as the buzzer sounded with Payton Pritchard. Those two combined for 54 points and over half of what the Ducks put up.

Final Score: No. 3 Seton Hall 83, No. 10 Texas Tech 74

Myles Powell led the way for the Pirates with 33 points including converting 6 of 11 from three-point range. This game was a slow burn for Seton Hall up until they went on a 17-4 run in the middle of the second half to pull away and pull away for good to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1991.

Kansas, BYU, West Virginia, Virginia

The second round is in the books of our NCAA Tournament simulation and in the Midwest Region, we have our four teams playing for the right to make it to the Final Four in Atlanta.

These matchups feature a rivalry game with West Virginia vs. Virginia and a rematch from the Maui Invite between Kansas and BYU, which saw the Jayhawks top the Cougars way back in November.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

Final Score: No. 1 Kansas 87, No. 5 BYU 72

Kansas had no issue in its rematch vs. BYU but it was not an easy victory for the Jayhawks. The game was tied at 42 at the half but Kansas went on a methodical run in the second half to win by 15 points for the victory.

It was the Jayhawk defense that came out on top as they held the Cougars to just 44.4 percent from the field, and that is compared to the Jayhawks hitting 50 percent from the field. Plus, the three extra three-pointers that Kansas made also was a key reason for their win.

Final score: No. 7 Virgina 70, No. 10 West Virginia 67

Virginia nearly blew this game as they held a nine-point lead at the half over West Virginia but the Cavs held onto the win to advance. The game was seemingly over when Kihei Clark hit a three-pointer with 1:23 left in the game to seal the win. West Virginia shooting 39 percent and still being in position to win was a feat but they did not have enough to move onto the Elite Eight.

The Elite Eight waits for two teams as four battle it out in New York City.

The second round is in the books of our NCAA Tournament simulation and in the East Region, we have our four teams playing in New York City in the Sweet Sixteen.

As a reminder, we are simulating these games over at What If Sports and are doing just like the NCAA Tournament, one loss and you’re out.

East Region

Final Score: No. 1 Dayton 102, No. 5 Auburn 77

New York, NY–Obi Toppin was named an AP first team All-American this past week, and rightfully so. The high flying sophomore has helped lead the Dayton Flyers to one of their greatest seasons in program history, but he’s not alone. And as most would tell you, success in the big dance doesn’t come from just one guy scoring the basketball.

Toppin had an amazing performance last round against Colorado as he finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds. But that has been his only standout game as the Flyers took on the Auburn Tigers, it was the team’s second leading scorer guard Jalen Crutcher who sent Bruce Pearl and company home early with 32 points on 11-16 shooting from the field.

The Tigers looked to double-team the sophomore sensation all night and though a fifteen-point performance is nothing to ignore, it was an effective strategy. The one thing Auburn forgot was that basketball is a team sport and you don’t receive a No. 1 seed or top-five ranking nationally for having just one good player.

Big performances for Crutcher and fellow junior guard and former Michigan Wolverine Ibi Watson (18 points and 5 rebounds) was the dagger in Auburn’s tournament run. And as the Flyers advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since the 2013-2014 season where they fell 52-62 to the Florida Gators who went all the way to the Final Four that year. It will truly take a team effort to get past a hot handed Duke Blue Devil’s team who looks as in sync as they have all season. It shouldn’t be too tough if they can knock down fifteen three pointers again and shoot 61% from the field, just saying.

Final Score: No. 3 Duke 99, No. 10 Arizona State 89

New York, NY–If there is one lesson teams have learned on a consistent basis playing basketball in March, it is that everything comes to an end. It’s a little tougher when you gain some momentum and knock off two teams in less than five days. It’s apart of March Madness and though the Sun Devil’s looked like this region’s Cinderella the Blue Devil’s (no relation) come out on top in this one with a ten-point win and some confidence heading into the Elite Eight.

Duke is playing their best basketball of the season and received double-digit scoring from six different players but were led by a double-double from freshman post Vernon Carey with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Carey dominated on both ends in the paint also chipping in 3 blocks and a steal.

Arizona State once again played through leader Remy Martin who led the way with 23 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. And even though they kept it close with only a two-point deficit going into halftime, their efforts in the second half weren’t enough. As an offensive run to start the second half by the Blue Devils gave them just enough cushion to hold off later Arizona State advances to seal the win.

Duke advances on, and unlike their next opponents the Dayton Flyers this isn’t exactly new to them. It’s not new to Dayton either as they have enjoyed several deep tournament runs in their history, two Elite Eight appearances in the last forty years and even more success prior. But to have come this far as a mid-major team there is still plenty to celebrate, but will the Blue Devil’s let them?

There are also three double-digit seeds in the Swee 16 with No. 14 Bradley playing the role of tournament darling and their matchup is not a high seed as they are taking on No. 7 seed Arizona.

We will continue to run our simulation this week and if you are stumbling across this for the first time, these games are simulated just one time over at What If Sports to determine the winner.

West

Final score: 87 No. 8 LSU, No. 1 Gonzaga 72

The first top seed goes down as LSU came from behind to easily defeat Gonzaga by 15 points. The Bulldogs had a first half lead but the scoring just was not there in the second half as they were outscored by 22. The Tigers had six players in double figures to make it to the Sweet 16.

Final score: No. 4 Oregon 83, No. 5 Butler 55

The Pac-12 continues to do well in this tournament as the Oregon Ducks routed Butler by 28 points. The Bulldogs had just one player in double figures with Kamar Baldwin who put up 17 points, and as a team, Butler shot just 39 percent from the field. The Ducks had an all-out offensive blitz, particularly in the second half, and they made 50 percent from beyond the arc. Payton Pritchard led the way with 5 of 8 from three-point range and 23 points in the win.

Final score: No. 3 Seton Hall 93, No. 6 Penn State 81

The offense was on in this game and the Pirates got the victory by converting from beyond the arc by making 12 of 21 and it also helped that they had the scoring spread apart with four in double figures. Penn State did all it could to keep up but their own outside shooting was not helpful.

Final score: No. 10 Texas Tech 87, No. 15 Eastern Washington 76

Eastern Washington is not following what Florida Gulf Coast did a few years ago by being a 15 seed and making the Sweet 16. Texas Tech got the win in a hard fought game. The first half had this a one point game in favor of the Eagles, but the difference began when the Red Raiders went on a 9-2 run to pull away just enough to get the win and advance to the Sweet 16.

Time to see who is going to move on.

The next round in our NCAA Tournament simulation is the South Region which features a double-digit seed matchup for the Sweet 16 after East Tennessee State and Bradley pulled off some pretty big upsets.

For those who are new and stumbled across this particular post, we are simulating the NCAA Tournament using What If Sports for a one-and-done format just like the real thing.

South

Final score: No. 1 Baylor 83, No. 9 USC 72

Davion Mitchell led the way for the Bears by scoring 22 points and converting 4 of 6 from three-point range. The Trojans three-point game was their downfall as they made just 4 of 19 from beyond the arc.

Final score: 95 No. 5 Ohio State, No. 4 Kentucky 61

Ohio State handed Kentucky one of its worst tournament losses ever by suffering a 34-point defeat. The Buckeyes offense and defense was on fire by shooting 59 percent from the field while its defense limited the Wildcats shot just 37 percent from the field. Leading the way for Ohio State was Duane Washington who scored 21 points and was one of five who scored in double-digits.

Final score: No. 14 Bradley 73, No. 11 East Tennessee State 72

We may have found Cinderella for this tournament with Bradley heading to the Sweet 16 as a No. 14 seed, but it didn’t seem like that was the case. Bradley nearly blew a 14-point lead at the half and the game ended up being a back and forth over the second part of the second half.

Danya Kingsby hit the game winner for Bradley to get the one-point game in what is sure to be a classic game for the 2020 tourney.

Final score: No. 7 Arizona 92, No. 2 Florida State 83

Another big upset in the South region happened with Arizona taking out national title sleeper team in Florida State. The Wildcats got off to a fast start and raced out to a 12-point lead and held off that Seminoles rally. Arizona was never in danger to lose this game as they move onto the Sweet 16.
