Boise State a two-touchdown favorite?

The 2019 Mountain West title game is this week and it is a rematch between Boise State and Hawaii. This will mark the second time these two have played this year and the first matchup saw the Broncos easily top the Warriors, 59-37.

That final score was not as close as the final score indicated as Hawaii scored 16 points in the fourth quarter when Boise State started to play backups, including third-string quarterback Jaylen Henderson.

With that first matchup in the books and how these two teams have played since then, it comes as no shock that Boise State is a big favorite to win its second title in three years. The shock is that the Broncos are a 15-point favorite and also the over/under is surprisingly low at 63.5.

The large line is due to the 21-point win Boise State had over Hawaii, the Broncos have just one loss since then, and the Warriors have suffered two defeats which include an odd loss to Fresno State.

The Hawaii offense has the potential to keep up with Boise State when it is clicking on all cylinders but when the Warriors have faced good defenses like Boise State and San Diego State, Hawaii has not played all that well. Also, to consider is that the Warriors are splitting quarterbacks with Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordeiro, but a counter is that Boise State is playing its third-string quarterback.

There is no doubt that Boise State should be the favorite but 15 points seem a little bit high. We will see how that line changes leading up to Saturday’s kick.

Three Keys to a Colorado State Victory

1. Play Like There Is No Tomorrow

One of the fatalistic things about college football is that one it’s done, it really is done. 13 seniors will play their final game in a Colorado State uniform and some may never get the chance to put on pads and play the game of football again. Ever.

Colorado State is going to need to remember that when they take the field on Friday. There truly is no tomorrow for some of these players. This is the final competitive football they will ever play and they get to go out by playing against one of the better football teams in the country. So play fast, free and hard.

From a coaching perspective, they have to pull out all the stops but still be smart. Surprise the Broncos at every turn and sometimes just man up and beat them at the point of attack. Keep Boise State on their heels and make the key adjustments as the game goes on.

2. Pray For Breaks

It is unlikely that Colorado State is going to beat Boise State in a straight up match up. Especially when you consider that the fact that Colorado State has continually shot itself in the foot with penalties at key times and with turnovers. They are going to need some help from Boise State if they are to beat the Mountain Division champs. If and when the Rams get those breaks whether it’s a fumble, shanked punt, of a penalty of some kind, the Rams have to turn it into points. Preferably touchdowns cause, well, the kicking game hasn’t exactly been a lock this season.

3. Pride

The Rams are staying home for the holidays for the second year in a row. While it’s been a down two years for the program, there is still pride left and that is the final ingredient to pulling off an upset. Pride in knowing that a win against Boise State will be the first one for Colorado State and a loss would ruin any chance Boise State has in getting to the Cotton Bowl. Pride in sending out the seniors in their final game with a win.

Prediction

This isn’t the Boise State of Kellen Moore and Doug Martin. The Broncos have had issues winning football games on the road this season. They had to come from behind against Florida State, San Jose State and lost at BYU. This is no gimme for Boise State but there is too much on the line for them to not pull it out. BOISE STATE 37 – COLORADO STATE 28

Rematch between Warriors and Broncos

Even though there is still one week left in the regular season, the Mountain West already has its football championship game solidified. Boise State won the Mountain Division as they boat-raced Utah State, 56-21 and the game did was not even that close.

Boise State will take on Hawaii which squeaked past San Diego State, 14-11, to win the Western Division for the first time since joining the Mountain West eight years ago.

The Warriors won the low-scoring game by the Aztecs missing a game-tying field from 42 yards out.

The hosting duties go to Boise State because they will be the higher-ranked team in the College Football Playoff rankings.

This will be the second meeting this year between the two schools. They faced off in Boise back on Oct. 12 with the Broncos easily winning, 59-37.
