Why Minnesota Will Win

Wisconsin is really, really banged up.

Northwestern’s defense is just that good, but it also helped that Wisconsin didn’t have top receivers Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor, and TE Jake Ferguson played through pain throughout the game.

There wasn’t anyone open for Graham Mertz to throw to.

Combine that along with the program’s issues with the coronavirus, and the team is – in some ways – operating on fumes.

Minnesota’s offense can match what Wisconsin likes to do – the Gophers own the clock, they’re great on third downs, and they don’t turn the ball over. And …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The Minnesota defensive front is about to be in for a bad day.

The Gopher passing game has the ability and talent to be far better, but it’s not clicking like it should be. The biggest problem is a deceptive line that got hammered by Michigan, Maryland and Iowa on the ground, and now has to deal with a Wisconsin running game that got stuffed too often by Northwestern, but is good enough to hit 200 yards.

On the other side, the performance by the Badger defense was lost in the narrative against Northwestern – it held the Wildcats to 24 rushing yards and allowed just 263 yards of total O.

Will the Badgers turn it over five times again like they did against the Wildcats? Minnesota has only forced four takeaways in five games.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the longest rivalry in major college football, starting in 1890 with the battle turning into an annual fight for the Paul Bunyan Axe.

There’s a big concern about whether or not Minnesota can go after suffering a bout with the coronavirus. Even if the Gophers are at full strength, they’re about to get a Badger team that’s not going to turn it over five times for a second week in a row, won’t get hit with the same sketchy pass interference calls, and will bring a D that won’t allow 300 yards of total offense.

Why Purdue Will Win

Can Minnesota show up on a weeknight game? It gacked away a loss to Maryland, and it didn’t do much of anything in a stunningly bad performance in a 35-7 home loss to Iowa last week.

The Gopher offense is moving the chains, and the running game isn’t bad, but the run defense has been a disaster, there’s no pressure into the backfield whatsoever, and the pass defense isn’t coming up with enough big plays.

Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell is coming off a rough day against Northwestern, but he’s not making a whole lot of mistakes, and he’s averaging over 300 yards per game through the air. The Purdue offense is working well enough to pick apart this Gopher D, but …

Why Minnesota Will Win

Purdue has yet to face anyone who’s interested in running and running some more.

Illinois doesn’t have much of a ground game, and Northwestern doesn’t have the ability to pound away too much, but Iowa was able to run for close to 200 yards and averaged over five yards per game in the opener.

Minnesota has to keep this simple. Run Mohamed Ibrahim, and run him some more. He’s been overworked as is – with 130 carries in four games – but he’s producing with 715 yards and ten touchdowns.

Get him going, and then hope Tanner Morgan can be the 2019 version. He hasn’t been sharp so far, but last year he hit 21-of-22 passes for 396 yards and four scores in the 38-31 win over the Boilermakers.

Can Minnesota avoid making a whole slew of mistakes?

Purdue has been strong in turnover margin so far, and Minnesota has turned it over twice in three of the four games. In this, though, the Gopher offensive line will catch a bit of a break with no Purdue pass rush to worry about.

Why Iowa Will Win

Start running, keep running, and then run some more.

It took a few games to get everything up to speed, but even though it ran for 195 yards and two scores and averaged well over five yards per carry against Purdue, everything really kicked in against Michigan State.

The Hawkeyes went with what they do, got a huge day out of the offensive line, and they rocked the Spartans for 226 yards and four scores, controlling the game throughout.

Minnesota’s run defense hasn’t been powered on as much as it’s been run through against Michigan and Maryland, and gave up 181 yards to a relatively punchless Illinois.

Why Minnesota Will Win

Iowa is getting yards out of Spencer Petras and the passing attack, but he’s not accurate enough – hitting only 54% with three interceptions and just two touchdown passes – and it’s been a killer to keep things moving.

The Hawkeye offense was a rock over the last two seasons on third downs – early rolling for over 40% conversion rates on a regular basis – and this year, Petras and the offense aren’t clicking to keep things moving only converting 33% of the time.

On the flip side, for all of the problems Minnesota has had, the team is moving the chains and it’s dominating the time of possession battle.

Overall the offense is working. It just needs its defense to hold up.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams were able to finally get their respective seasons going last week with dominant wins, but which one was more real? Minnesota’s offense has been fine throughout the season, but it needs the defense to stiffen against a decent offense.

It’ll happen this week.

The Gopher run D had a slew of issues against Michigan and Maryland, but both teams got big games on the ground out of their quarterbacks. Spencer Petras isn’t going to take off enough to be a problem, and he won’t be sharp enough with the passing attack.

Why Minnesota Will Win

The offense is more than fine.

The passing attack could be a little crisper, and there’s been a problem producing for a full four quarters, but the O isn’t really the problem. The weapons are still there.

Mo Ibrahim leads the nation in rushing yards per game by a mile. It’s only been two games, but he’s averaging 173.5 a game – almost 23 more than No. 2 man, Iowa State’s Breece Hall – coming off a 207-yard, four-touchdown effort in the collapse against Maryland.

The Illinois run defense has been fine, but the secondary has been next-level bad, allowing Wisconsin’s Graham Mertz and Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell to completed 88% of their passes for a combined 619 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging over 11 yards per throw.

Why Illinois Will Win

The Minnesota defense hasn’t shown up yet.

The pass protection might be among the team’s biggest problems, and the team hasn’t been remotely consistent, but the defense has been the biggest issue with its inability to come up with a meaningful stop against Michigan, and collapsing late last week as Maryland did whatever it wanted in the fourth quarter.

The Gopher D has been equally bad against the run and the pass, there’s no pressure into the backfield, and the third down defense has been non-existent in key moments.

But that pass protection – that’s going to be Minnesota’s issue against an Illinois pass rush that’s been among the Big Ten’s best over the first two games.

What’s Going To Happen

Illinois doesn’t have the skill parts in the backfield to do to the Gophers what Maryland did, but it’ll make this a nasty battle on the lines.

Minnesota won’t mess around too much. It’ll have a more balanced attack, the running game will go for a full four quarters, and the passing game will be more explosive with Rashod Bateman and the offense overcoming another rough day from the defensive side.

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Maryland offense still doesn’t work.

Northwestern might have a solid defense, but to start out the season with a 43-3 loss – only generating an early field goal, and that’s it – with just 207 yards showed just how far the program still has to go.

Minnesota night have struggled in the opener against Michigan, but the D should catch a break this week, and the offense should be able to open it up a bit after the rough start.

Tanner Morgan and the passing game shouldn’t have a problem, but the Mohamed Ibrahim and the rushing attack should go wild against a defensive front that allowed 325 yards of Northwestern rushing offense.

Why Maryland Will Win

Eventually this offense is going to work.

QB Taulia Tagovailoa is a good enough talent to be far better than he showed against Northwestern, and Lance LeGendre hit all four of his passes. There’s talent in the receiving corps, there’s speed, and there’s enough in place to be far more explosive once it clicks.

Michigan came up with a great offensive balance against the Gophers and always had an answer against a Gopher defense that couldn’t do enough to get into the backfield. On the other side, the offensive line couldn’t stop the Wolverine pass rush. Maryland has to sell out on one side of the line, and it has to give the quarterbacks time to work.

What’s Going To Happen

Maryland did next to nothing right against Northwestern, but now it’s getting a shot at home to turn this around in a hurry. It won’t happen.

Minnesota is far better than it looked against a strong Michigan team that owned the lines. This week, this will be the Gopher team many thought would show up last Saturday night. The running game and the offense will control the clock for close to 40 minutes.
