Five reasons why Michigan can win the national championship

Michigan got past Alabama, but what can the Wolverines rely on to get past Washington?

The Michigan Wolverines are one game away from their first individual national title since 1948, but they’ll have to get by the Washington Huskies and their fearsome passing offense to do it. Head coach Jim Harbaugh and his team are the No. 1 team in the country and favored by multiple points in the big showdown, but where does Michigan have the biggest advantage?

The Wolverines showcased their strengths throughout their undefeated season with statement wins over Penn State and Ohio State, and they finally got to show their resilience in a Rose Bowl comeback over Alabama. Here are the different ingredients Michigan needs to rely upon or prove to walk away with the program’s first College Football Playoffs National Championship trophy.

Washington has only allowed 11 sacks in their 14 games this season, and their offensive line was awarded as the best in the nation this year for their ability to protect quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The Wolverines showed they can absolutely wreck an opposing offense in Pasadena, as Michigan’s defensive line pressured Jalen Milroe on 12 of his 35 dropbacks and combined for six sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter kept faking pressure and bringing different blitzers to change the picture, making it impossible for the Crimson Tide to adjust. Penix handles muddy pockets much better than Milroe does, but star pass rushers like Mason Graham and Kris Jenkins could prevent the Huskies from throwing downfield as often as they’d like.

The Michigan running back has done two things better than anyone else in the country this season: find the end zone and move the sticks. Corum compiled 1,111 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns through 14 games this season, and a large portion of his prominence comes when he’s only a few yards away from success. PFF credits Corum as one of just seven Power 5 running backs to convert more than 70 first downs this season, and he’s the only one in the group with fewer than 250 carries. He landed the knockout punch against the Crimson Tide with a 17-yard rumble into the end zone in which he bounced off of at least four defenders. Michigan’s offense relies on staying ahead of the sticks, and Corum can keep turning third and 2 or third and 3 into first downs.

Washington has three future NFL receivers in its offense right now, including a future lottery pick in Rome Odunze. The Huskies average 350.0 yards per game through the air. It’s strength-on-strength, however, as the Wolverines allow just 150.0 yards per game. Washington will be Michigan’s toughest test yet, but the defense held a successful Alabama passing attack to just 116 yards on 23 attempts. Only two teams have thrown for more than 200 yards against the Wolverines, and both of them threw two interceptions. Michigan has allowed just seven passing touchdowns and intercepted 16 passes. If they’re going to beat the Huskies, they need to keep Penix quiet, and they might be the only team capable of that.

The Wolverines had never trailed in the second half of the 2023 regular season, so it was fascinating to see how they’d react when Alabama surged to take the lead late in the Rose Bowl. I wouldn’t say the Michigan passing offense passed with flying colors. The Wolverines punted on their first three second-half possessions and could only move the ball 20 yards after an Alabama fumble gave them a window. However, with less than five minutes on the clock and trailing by seven points, the Michigan offense led an eight-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy only dropped back to pass on four of those eight plays and two of them were flat routes, so the dropback passing offense is not a checked box if Washington somehow gets up by 14 points or more. But the Wolverines don’t need to lead for the entire game, either, and that’s a much larger margin for error.

The Washington defense has only allowed 24.1 points per game this season, just outside the top 50 in the FBS. As a pass defense, however, the Huskies are feast-or-famine. They have 16 interceptions as a unit, tied for the ninth-most in the country, but they are in the nation’s 11th-worst defense in passing yards allowed per game (267.1). They’ve surrendered 23 touchdowns, one of the highest totals in the Power 5. The Huskies’ defensive philosophy was on full display in the final drive against Texas, when they let the Longhorns drive all the way down the field before swatting away the final pass. It’s worked so far, and Texas has better receivers than Michigan, but that is too thin a margin to rely upon against the best team in the country.

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy says ‘about 80 percent’ of college teams steal signs and accuses Ohio State

J.J. McCarthy said the practice is common among college teams and said Ohio State did the same thing to Michigan in 2019-20.

Michigan is getting ready for the national championship next Monday, but the Wolverines can’t outrun the sign-stealing investigation that has hung over their entire season.

After head coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for the final three games of the regular season, quarterback J.J. McCarthy downplayed the act on Wednesday during a media session and said it was a common practice.

“I’d say a good number, 80 percent of teams in college football steal signs,” McCarthy said. “We actually had to adapt because (in 2019 and 2020), Ohio State was stealing our signs, which is legal.”

McCarthy said the Wolverines simply needed to make the game an even playing field.

Michigan staff member Connor Stalions, who remained at the center of the investigation and resigned in November, attended the Wolverines’ Rose Bowl victory, according to a social media post from former Michigan player Chase Winovich.

USA TODAY Sports lists Tennessee, Ole Miss as bowl season winners

USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg named the Volunteers and the Rebels, as well as the playoff champs, as bowl season’s biggest champions.

With bowl season in the rearview mirror, USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg took to the internet to decide who the biggest champions were from the past two weeks in college football.

The list of course kicked off with the two playoff champions, Michigan and Washington. The Wolverines finally got over the hump for their first playoff victory after coming up empty the previous two years, and the Huskies rode a superstar performance from quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

Outside of the final four, however, Myerberg pointed out a trio of SEC teams. Tennessee got glimpses of promising young quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who put up 178 yards of offense and scored four touchdowns against Iowa’s formidable defense, while Missouri’s win over Ohio State issued a statement about the Tigers’ place in the college football pantheon.

Ole Miss set itself up for some positive 2024 momentum as well by capping off the first 11-win season in program history. The Rebels will only get better as Myerberg pointed out quarterback Jaxson Dart’s 2024 return and the best incoming transfer portal class in the nation will set Lane Kiffin’s team up well for the 12-team playoff.

The USA TODAY Sports writer rounded out his column by tabbing Kansas, who beat UNLV in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, and Northwestern, who defeated Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl, as other big winners. His full insight, as well as his losers list, can be found here.

Heading to the CFP National Championship is going to cost a pretty penny

Better tap into the savings if you want to go to the national championship.

The title game is set. The No. 1 Michigan Wolverines will take on the No. 2 Washington Huskies in Houston, Texas, for the national championship.

These two teams last met in 2021 in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines won 31-10. The last time they met in the postseason came in the 1993 Rose Bowl, Michigan also won that game. The year prior in the 1992 Rose Bowl Washington won 34-14.

This is the fifth postseason meeting between the two schools with each team winning twice. Overall, Michigan leads the all-time series 8-5 with back-to-back wins. Michigan and Washington become conference rivals next season with the Huskies leaving the dying Pac-12 for the Big Ten.

As of Tuesday, the cheapest ticket available on Vivid Seats is $1,078 and that puts you on the third level. The most expensive ticket would cost you $13,464 to sit on the front row at the midfield behind the Michigan bench. Sitting behind the Washington bench will cost you $11,016 per ticket.

The best photos from Michigan’s Rose Bowl comeback

The best photos from Michigan’s 27-20 overtime victory that saw the Wolverines drive down the field to overcome a touchdown deficit in the final minutes.

The Michigan Wolverines won their first College Football Playoff game on Monday with a miraculous comeback against Alabama, scoring the game’s last two touchdowns for a 27-20 victory in overtime.

The Wolverines defense dominated the first half, sacking Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe on five of his 15 dropbacks and holding the Crimson Tide under 100 total yards of offense in the first two quarters.

A slow day on offense and some special teams blunders meant Michigan only led by three at halftime, however, and Alabama’s offense started to churn in the last two quarters. The Crimson Tide scored a touchdown to retake the lead and kicked a long field goal to extend the lead to 20-13, forcing Michigan’s hand in the final five minutes.

The Wolverines offense responded, however. Blake Corum and Roman Wilson led the Michigan offense down the field, exchanging big plays before Wilson caught the game-tying touchdown on a flat route.

Corum took his turn with a touchdown rumble in overtime, and the Michigan defensive line stuffed Alabama on fourth down a few minutes later to punch their ticket to the national title.

Here are the best photos from Michigan’s victory.

Michigan comes back to beat Alabama in Rose Bowl and punch ticket to national championship

The Wolverines scored the game’s final two touchdowns after trailing in the fourth quarter for the first time all season.

Michigan defeated Alabama for a 27-20 victory in the Rose Bowl on Monday for their first College Football Playoff victory under head coach Jim Harbaugh and a chance to play for the national title.

The game nearly became a nightmare from the opening snap for the Wolverines after quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw an interception on the first play from scrimmage. The play was overturned after it was deemed Crimson Tide freshman Caleb Downs had been out of bounds, but the offense still couldn’t capitalize on the break with points. After a muffed punt three minutes later led to Alabama’s first touchdown, it seemed like the game could teeter away from Michigan.

The Wolverines defensive line answered the call and absolutely dominated the first two quarters, however. Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe dropped back to pass 15 times in the first half and got sacked five times as the Wolverines’ defense mixed pressures and brought blitzers from everywhere in the front seven.

The Michigan offense started to churn late in the first quarter, too. Star running back Blake Corum, who had an FBS-leading 24 touchdowns this season, ran for 51 yards on nine carries and caught an eight-yard touchdown for the Wolverines’ first touchdown. A few possessions later, wide receiver Tyler Morris caught an underneath crossing route from McCarthy and raced 38 yards to the end zone, and Michigan had the lead.

The Wolverines bungled the extra point to keep the lead just 13-7, however. Despite Michigan outgaining Alabama 197-96 in the first quarter and converting nine of the game’s 14 first downs, a Crimson Tide field goal in the closing seconds of the second quarter left the lead at just three points.

Both teams traded punts for the entire third quarter, each trying to gain the upper hand in the field position game before Alabama’s offense finally struck again. The Crimson Tide got the ball near midfield and, after a few first downs, an 18-yard rumble from Milroe up the middle inside the 5-yard line set up an easy Jace McClellan rushing touchdown to take a 17-13 lead.

After another Michigan punt, it looked like the Crimson Tide offense had a chance to put the game out of reach, but Milroe fumbled on Alabama’s opening drive to inject life into the Michigan sideline. After a failed flea flicker lost seven yards on the ensuing drive, however, the Wolverines missed a field goal that would have made it a one-point game.

After Alabama kicker Will Reichard made his second field goal from 50 yards away or farther, Michigan’s offense had fewer than five minutes to find a game-tying touchdown.

They delivered.

McCarthy found Corum for a huge gain on fourth down before star wide receiver Roman Wilson took over the drive. He made a leaping catch to get Michigan into the red zone before catching the game-tying touchdown on a flat route.

In overtime, Michigan’s offense ran through Corum. The star runner traveled all 25 yards of the opening overtime possession in just two carries, breaking about 50 tackles on his way to the end zone. Alabama tried to sneak Milroe up the middle on fourth down, but the Wolverines’ defensive line stuffed the Crimson Tide quarterback to cement the comeback.

The Wolverines will await the winner of the Sugar Bowl between Washington and Texas to play for the national title.

Alabama players not watching film individually for Michigan preparation, Isaiah Bond says

Alabama players are not watching film individually in light of Michigan’s sign-stealing investigation, Isaiah Bond said on Thursday.

Alabama is not watching film individually this week in light of Michigan‘s sign-stealing investigation, wide receiver Isaiah Bond revealed during a media session on Thursday.

Bond said the Alabama coaching staff insisted players watch film and prepare in groups rather than on their own. The decision was made about a week before his media session.

“We’re able to watch film with the team, but like, personally, we can’t watch film,” Bond said. “Some reason with Michigan stealing signs, but I’m not really too keyed in on that.”

The Wolverines have been under investigation by the NCAA for the scandal for most of the season, with head coach Jim Harbaugh suspended from the sidelines for the final three games of the regular season.

Michigan players downplay reaction to Alabama as shock

“It wasn’t really, like, fear,” a Michigan player said about the team’s viral reaction to drawing Alabama in the College Football Playoff.

When the College Football Playoff committee revealed Alabama would be the fourth seed and play Michigan in the semifinals, the world sat stunned that undefeated Florida State was not chosen.

The top-seeded Wolverines responded with what sounded like a different emotion. A groan rippled around the room as the Crimson Tide logo flashed up on the screen, captured through ESPN’s live feed at each potential team’s watch party.

Several Michigan players addressed the video during media sessions on Thursday, and the team insisted it wasn’t the emotion the internet thought it was. The Wolverines said they were simply just shocked undefeated Florida State would not be a playoff team.

“It’s funny that I keep hearing everybody say we’re scared because we got ‘Bama,” linebacker Michael Barrett said. “It was more like the shock of not seeing an undefeated Power 5 team…It wasn’t really like fear, never that, of any team.”

Several of Barrett’s teammates echoed the statement, and linebacker Junior Colson suggested with a grin that maybe Alabama was the scared team after the Crimson Tide hired former Michigan assistant George Helow ahead of the Rose Bowl.

USA TODAY’s Dan Wolken wrote in a Friday column that he didn’t believe the new messaging.

“I’ve seen people get more excited opening letters from the IRS,” Wolken wrote about the video.

The Rose Bowl kicks off at 5:00 p.m. ET on January 1st.
