Why Miami Will Win

The Hurricane defense forces enough mistakes to matter.

It blocks a lot of shots and comes up with a whole ton of steals, and it has the ability to force a whole lot of mistakes when everything is working. In a perfect world, the Hurricanes are great at keeping games relatively low scoring and come up with the big defensive stop late.

Florida State fouls a lot and isn’t great on the boards, but the key will be turnovers. Start with assuming the Seminoles will give it up at least 15 times and go from there. Buuuuuut …

Why Florida State Will Win

Miami doesn’t shoot well.

That’s being kind.

The Canes can’t and don’t shoot from three, they struggle to get to around 67 points per game, and they’ve been a disaster lately from the outside, failing to hit 17% or more from three in three of their last four and four of the last six games – losing them all. The FSU defense is great on the inside and good enough at pressuring from outside to matter.

What’s Going To Happen

Miami just can’t get the O going. Either the defense has to lock down hard on a FSU offense that occasionally goes into a funk, or something has to go in from three. Neither will happen.

Coaches Poll College Football Rankings: ACC All-Time Greatest Programs

What are the top college football programs of all-time going by the Coaches Poll? Here are the top ACC teams according to a CFN formula.

What are the top college football programs of all-time going by the USA Today Coaches Poll and UPI rankings? Here are the top ACC programs according to a CFN formula using all the USA Today Coaches and UPI final polls.

Coaches Poll College Football Rankings
All-Time Coaches Poll Rankings | AP All-Time Rankings
ACC | Big Ten | Big 12 | M-West | Pac-12 | SEC
1950s | 1960s  | 1970s | 1980s | 1990s | 2000s | 2010s

Which current ACC college football programs are the greatest of all-time according to the UPI and USA Today Coaches final polls?

Using a ranking system taking all the AP final college football polls and assigning 25 points to the national champion, 24 for the final No. 2 team, 23 for the No. 3 team on down, it’s Florida State without much of a problem with Miami coasting easily into second.

One note on this – this is made up of current ACC programs and factoring in their histories. Obviously many of these programs weren’t in the ACC starting in 1950.

Note, again, this is based on the CFN formula. This isn’t any official ranking coming from USA TODAY or the Coaches Poll.

Below is each ACC program’s ranking after the 2020 season, followed by the points, followed by the ranking overall.

The pre-spring version of the CFN 2021 rankings with a first look at all the ACC teams.

2021 ACC Rankings: Pre-Spring

ACC Atlantic Division

1. Clemson Tigers

Why To Be Happy: At the moment, the defense gets all 11 starters back after leading the ACC in total and scoring D. This was a young group up front, and now all the stars return. Linebackers James Skalski and Baylon Spector announced they’re returning for another year, corner Derion Kendrick is back, and on and on and on. Oh yeah … the offense did this last year without a few key receivers who’ll be back.

What To Work On: Turnovers were a bit of a problem – especially fumbling – and the running game wasn’t its normal killer self. Travis Etienne is done, but the veteran O line has to be better at pounding away.

Bottom Line: It’s Clemson. It lost a transcendent NFL QB prospect in Trevor Lawrence, the most productive ACC running back ever in Etienne, and it’s going to be even better.

2. NC State Wolfpack

Why To Be Happy: The defense loses the main man Asim McNeill from the middle of the line, but everyone else of note appears to be back. Throw in a few key transfers – especially at safety – and the Pack should be nasty on that side of the ball.

What To Work On: Most of the offensive skill parts are back – helped by the return of leading receiver Emeka Emezie – but the production has to come. The O was fine, but it wasn’t explosive enough and there were too many turnovers.

Bottom Line: NC State was great at beating the teams it was supposed to, and the experience will be there to repeat the decent level of success of 2020, but big-time playmakers have to emerge.

3. Boston College Eagles

Why To Be Happy: It was a strong first season under head coach Jeff Hafley, and he gets the pieces back for the offense to be even more dangerous. The backfield of QB Phil Jurkovec and RB David Bailey will be great if …

What To Work On: The running game has to start working again. It wasn’t a function of the offensive style, but with all five offensive linemen expected to return to pave the way for Bailey, there’s no excuse for being 118th in the nation in rushing again.

Bottom Line: Just about everyone returns on offense, and the defense that needs a little reworking needs to start getting behind the line more. The Eagles will be stronger.

4. Florida State Seminoles

Why To Be Happy: There needs to be a whole lot of work and a whole lot more production, but almost all of the entire starting offensive 11 from the end of last season is expected to be back. The defensive side loses several key parts, but instant help appears to be on the way from the transfer portal.

What To Work On: Yeah, the offense. The defensive side has to generate some semblance of a pass rush, but the O has to be more efficient throwing the ball and has to figure out how to move the chains.

Bottom Line: 2020 couldn’t have been any worse for head coach Mike Norvell and the national title-level program. There’s experience, there’s a reset mindset, and … there’s a lot of work to do.

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Why To Be Happy: The offense should be even more explosive and more dangerous. The offensive line returns almost intact, the receiving corps is loaded, and Sam Hartman – bowl meltdown against Wisconsin aside – is a terrific triggerman to run it all. There’s more than enough talent back on D to be fine, but …

What To Work On: Losing star end Carlos Basham matters. The pass rush was a problem for the Demon Deacons with him, and now it’s going to take a whole lot of work to get even more out of the D that has to work to hold serve.

Bottom Line: It’ll be more of the same. Dangerous, fun, explosive offense that should be able to keep up with just about everyone, but questionable defense that should have enough issues to make every game a shootout.

6. Louisville Cardinals

Why To Be Happy: The offense is going to be interesting with Georgia Southern option wizard QB Shai Werts transferring in to add another option. Expect more consistency and production from a team that should be able to keep up with just about everyone.

What To Work On: The receiving corps loses Dez Fitzpatrick and Tutu Atwell to the next level, and the linebacking corps has to replace almost all the starting linebackers along with nose tackle Jared Goldwire.

Bottom Line: Coming off a 4-7 season, the Cardinals have to bounce back quickly despite a slew of key departures compared to the rest of the Atlantic Division. Improvement on the O line and limiting the turnovers are a must.

7. Syracuse Orange

Why To Be Happy: The Orange have almost everyone back on offense and on the defensive front seven, and the arrival of Garrett Shrader from Mississippi State should help the quarterback room. The experience is there on both sides of the ball, but …

What To Work On: The secondary loses its top playmakers, and losing receiver and return man Nykeim Johnson to Kent State hurts, and … offensive line, offensive line, offensive line. The Orange have GOT to figure out how to block after not doing enough of it over the last few years.

Bottom Line: We know it’s possible for Syracuse to win – we all saw it a few years ago – but after a lost year with horrible play on both lines, the program has to get the infrastructure right.

Oklahoma State 37, Miami 34. The 10 ten things you need to know about the Oklahoma State win over Miami in the Cheez-It Bowl.

[jwplayer 1ix6Wves]

Oklahoma State 37, Miami 34: Cheez-It Bowl

10. Miami made way too many mistakes to pull off the big comeback. There were way too many dropped passes – and they all seemed to come on big chances deep – two turnovers, no takeaways, and too many problems on third downs converting just four of 14 tries. The Canes got close, but couldn’t get that one big break to take over.

9. The knee injury suffered by Miami QB D’Eriq King took the air completely out of the game. It turned into a fun game, and the Hurricanes did a great job of fighting back, but to lose the star of the program – who already announced that he’s coming back next year – was a gut-punch. He completed 10-of-13 passes for 113 yards and a score, and ran for 18 yards, before getting knocked out.

8. Give a ton of credit to Miami for the mental toughness to fight back. After the embarrassing 62-26 loss to North Carolina, the last thing the Canes needed was to fall behind 21-0. Check that – the last thing they needed was to lose King to an injury. The defense stepped up its play, N’Kosi Perry stepped in and was fine – he completed 19-of-34 passes for 228 yards and two scores – but the team dug too deep a hole.

7. Spencer Sanders showed up strong. The Oklahoma State quarterback was sharp from the word go, was able to make the third down plays happen, and he was red hot with good decision after good decision to get the team up big. There might have been a lull, and it might have taken more of a fight than it needed to be, but he ended up completing 27-of-40 for 305 yards and four scores, and he led the team with 45 rushing yards. This is the type of performance to make him one of the Big 12’s bigger stars going into 2021.

6. Well hello, Brennan Presley. The Oklahoma State freshman receiver caught one pass for seven yards against Oklahoma, and he ran for a touchdown against Kansas State. That was it for his regular season, and then … boom. Six catches, 118 yards, three touchdowns. Miami spent so much time worrying about Tylan Wallace – who caught six passes for 73 yards – and the lightning-quick Presley went off.

And then Presley became really vital after Wallace didn’t play after halftime. It was supposedly the plan from the start that he was just going to play for a half, but that was … weird.

5. It’s hard to get a whole lot of love and respect as a college tight end in the state of Florida when Kyle Pitts is lighting it up for the Gators, but Brevin Jordan is a big-time talent who showed why he’s suck a next-level weapon. He caught 30 passes for 480 yards and five scores in the regular season, and he helped make the O go after it sputtered early and finished with seven catches for 80 yards and two scores.

4. It was amazing how the body language changed on a snap. Miami didn’t show up for the first 15 minutes, nothing went right, and then came the King injury. It was it the defense needed a bit to get warmed up, and it was also like Oklahoma State punched itself out.

Everything worked so well early, and then there was a shot to go up 28 and put it well out of reach. The drive stalled, the Cowboys went for a field goal, there was a penalty that pushed it back, and Brady Pohl missed. The game changed on that.

3. It was a rough game for the officials. They missed a two-point conversion for Miami that would’ve made it tied at 21 – Brevin Jordan looked like he got in, but he was called short of the goal line. The officials also missed what appeared to be what should’ve been a pass interference call on an early throw to Jordan, there were too many other penalties called – 16 in all for 154 yards – and the officials were way too noticeable.

2. This was a good moment for Miami head coach Manny Diaz. He was getting roasted on social media after the awful start, and he was already getting hammered on after the 14-0 Independence Bowl loss to Louisiana Tech last year, but give him and the coaching staff credit. Everything went wrong, and yet his team had a shot at the win in the final minutes. It was a loss – the tenth bowl loss in the last 11 tries for the program – but this is the type of game to build off of.

1. It wasn’t easy, but Oklahoma State closed out with the win. It wasn’t the year many thought it could be – the Cowboys were supposed to be good enough at least play for the Big 12 Championship, if not win it – but going 8-3 with a bowl win over Miami is a good season, especially this year. This makes it four bowl wins in the last five for Gundy and a 10-5 record with 15 straight bowl appearances.

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Cheez-It Bowl

It’s the first Power Five vs. Power Five matchup of the bowl season, and it’s okay if you’re a little confused. The Cheez-It Bowl moved names from Arizona to Orlando – this used to be the Camping World Bowl – and there’s a whole lot to prove from every angle, starting with the game itself.

The Camping World Bowl was a disaster last year – Notre Dame easily got past Iowa State 33-9 – and the Cheez-It Bowl owns the gold standard for bad bowl games with TCU’s 10-7 overtime win over Cal in 2018. And then there’s this …

How bad has Miami been in bowl games? It beat West Virginia in the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl. That’s it since 2006, dropping nine of the last ten including a 14-0 clunker to Louisiana Tech in last year’s Independence. Combine that with a 62-26 loss to North Carolina to end the regular season, and the pressure is on. Unlike last year, though, the offense has QB D’Eriq King and a whole lot more pop.

Oklahoma State – who has gone 3-1 in the last four bowl games – was supposed to be a true challenger for the Big 12 title, but it faded late with three losses in the last six games. However, the offense is better and improving – even though star RB Chuba Hubbard has opted out – and a blowout to Oklahoma is the only real dud game. It’ll make this an offensive show.

Miami (8-1) vs North Carolina (7-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why North Carolina Will Win

Miami might have a gaudy record and a slew of fun playmakers including an elite quarterback, but they haven’t had to deal with a whole lot of high-end offenses.

The Canes gave up 550 yards to Clemson, over 500 to Louisville, and over 400 to NC State. They won two of them, but now they have to deal with the most balanced and dangerous attack outside of Clemson’s.

Sam Howell threw for 550 yards and six touchdowns in the win over Wake Forest, the running game rolled for over 300 yards three times and averages 218 yards per game, and now Miami’s D has to deal with all of it.

On the other side – to be fair, partly because of QB D’Eriq King running around making plays – Miami allows the most tackles for loss of anyone in the ACC. North Carolina’s defense isn’t amazing, but if it can just do enough to hold serve once in a while, the offense will do the rest.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Miami Will Win

D’Eriq King is just that good.

He might not be putting up the massive numbers he did when he was rolling at Houston a few years ago, but he’s hitting 64% of his passes, has started bombing away more and making more deep shots, and he has thrown 20 touchdown passes with just four picks – all four coming in two games.

He doesn’t do enough running, but when he had to against NC State, he pulled out the win.

North Carolina might have the high-powered offense, the balance, and the veteran playmakers, but if King is the best player on the field, that’s enough to carry the Canes.

For all of the good things North Carolina does, it doesn’t make a ton of plays behind the line. It generates sacks, but not a whole lot of tackles for loss.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

There’s still a battle with Georgia Tech to deal with for Miami, and this is it for North Carolina.

There’s no way the Tar Heels can be the third-best team in the ACC standings without a win and two straight Canes losses, but the highest-ranked available team in the ACC standings goes to the Orange Bowl. If Notre Dame and Clemson both get to the College Football Playoff, and No. 17 North Carolina beats No. 10 Miami convincingly, it could be the Tar Heels who get the big bowl.

King will be magnificent, the two teams will go back-and-forth in a wild shootout, and the Canes will end up pulling it out at home with a late drive after blowing a late second half lead.

Miami (7-1) vs Duke (2-7) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Miami Will Win

Duke’s turnover problems aren’t slowing down.

They were horrible to start the season, had a few lulls, but then roared back last week with five giveaways in the 56-33 loss to Georgia Tech. With a whopping 30 giveaways, the Blue Devils are dead last in the nation in mistakes with 15 fumbles and 15 interceptions.

Miami doesn’t do a whole lot to take it away, but it’s amazing at generating plays behind the line and there’s no problem with turnovers, giving it up just eight times so far.

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Duke Will Win

The Blue Devil passing game hasn’t been bad, and it’s coming off its first 300-yard day of the season. Chase Brice has had major issues being accurate, and Gunnar Holmberg has played a bit, but no matter what, Duke has to get throwing and keep the pressure on the Hurricane secondary.

Defensively, there’s enough from the front line to get behind the line to be a problem. The tackles for loss allowed stat is sort of skewed because QB D’Eriq King tries to make things happen, but the Hurricane O line is a bit too leaky. The Duke D has keep King from getting comfortable.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Just assume the Hurricanes will be +2 in turnover margin, at least.

Miami is still very much in the College Football Playoff hunt, but it needs a ton of help, has to get a Virginia Tech upset over Clemson, and it has to start looking the part – close wins over the last three games to Virginia, NC State and Virginia Tech haven’t helped.

Duke will be a bit inspired in its final home game of the year and Senior Day, but Miami needs to be fantastic.
