Ohio State men’s tennis settles for NCAA runner up

In case you missed it, the Ohio State men’s tennis team fell short of its goal of a national title with a runner-up finish. #GoBucks

That outdoor national championship remains elusive for the Ohio State men’s tennis program.

After entering the 2023 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships as the No. 3 seed, the Buckeyes made it all the way through the bracket, even upsetting No. 2 seed TCU in the semifinals 4-0 to earn a right to play for a national title against defending national champion and No. 5 seed Virginia.

But that’s where things ended down in Orlando.

Unfortunately for the Buckeyes. they never really found themselves in the match and fell to the Cavaliers 4-0. OSU lost the doubles point when it dropped two of the three matches to fall behind 1-0 and never really recovered in the singles matches to make a game of it.

UVA got straight-set wins on courts one, two, and three to secure the win easily 4-0. Justin Boulais (6-4, 6-2), Cannon Kingsley (6-4, 6-2), and JJ Tracy (6-2, 6-1) all fell with James Trotter, Alexander Bernard, and Jack Anthrop all still in action but no longer needed to determine the outcome.

With the loss, Ohio State finishes the season with a 34-3 and comes just a whisker away from winning the national title again while taking home the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles.

Focus will now turn to the individual and doubles NCAA championships with Kingsley, Boulais, Tracy, Trotter, and Bernard all in action for the singles tournament, and Andrew Lutschaunig and Robert Cash joining teammates in the doubles tournament.

Ohio State men’s tennis advances to national championship match with win over TCU

Playing for a national title on Sunday! #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s tennis team will be playing for an outdoor national title on Sunday thanks to a dominating 4-0 win over No. 2 seed TCU on Saturday in Orlando, Florida in a semifinal matchup of the Men’s NCAA Tennis Championships.

Unlike the previous match against No. 6 seed Georgia on Friday, the Buckeyes this time got off on the right foot by taking the doubles point in a thrilling tiebreaker of the third match with James Trotter and Andrew Lutschaunig coming up clutch.

From there, OSU dominated in singles with Jack Anthrop notching the first win by way of a 6-2, 6-2 victory to make it 2-0. Justin Boulais then took the next point to make it 3-0 Ohio State with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Freshman Alexander Bernard then sealed it for the second straight day with a 6-4, 6-4 win to send the Buckeyes into the national championship match.

The other three matches in progress then didn’t need to finish.

As great as Ohio State has been under head coach Ty Tucker, the outdoor title has been achingly close without breaking through. The Buckeyes will have a chance to finally knock the door down when it faces defending champion and No. 5 seed Virginia on Sunday at Noon.

We’ll all be rooting and watching.

Ohio State men’s tennis wins thriller vs. Georgia to advance to NCAA semifinals

On to the semifinals! #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s tennis team turned the tables from what we saw in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and beat the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.

But it was far from easy.

Getting the doubles point can be so crucial in tournament play against the level of competition the Buckeyes are facing as they move further into the national tournament. However, OSU dropped that point against Georgia rather handily, 6-3, 6-3, for a quick 1-0 hole in the race for four points. It would take all the Buckeyes had to win four of the six singles matches.

James Trotter started the comeback with a smooth 6-4, 6-4, victory to even the score at 1-1, but Ohio State fell behind once again when Georgia notched another victory. Jack Anthrop pulled OSU even at 2-2 though with a 6-4, 6-0 victory on court six, and the stage was set for a wild finish.

Ohio State had put itself in a pretty good position by winning the first sets of four matches and got the results it needed when Cannon Kingsley again pulled the Buckeyes even at 3-3, but freshman Alexander Bernard seemed to be running into trouble on court 5 after winning the first set 6-4. In the final, clinching match of the day, He fell down 4-0 and 5-2 in set two but then rallied using a more defensive style.

Instead of allowing the second set to get away, he got a couple of breaks and then served out the match to win 7-5 and send Ohio State on to the semifinals with a thrilling 4-3 victory.

With the win, the final four is set with OSU taking on TCU (who beat Michigan), and Texas doing battle with Virginia.

The Buckeyes match is scheduled for Noon ET on Saturday in Orlando, with the winner playing for the NCAA championship on Sunday.

It was a thrilling and tense match on Saturday for No. 3 seed Ohio State, but at the end of the day, the Buckeyes did what they needed to do on Saturday in order to survive and advance to Orlando, Florida, for the quarterfinals of the 2023 NCAA men’s tennis championships.

Ohio State men’s tennis receives No. 3 overall seed in NCAA Tournament

Can the OSU men finally pull off that elusive outdoor title? #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s tennis team will give it another run again in 2023. The one thing missing from head coach Ty Tucker’s resume is an outdoor title. The Buckeyes won the indoor national title twice, a gob of Big Ten regular season and conference titles, but have always fallen just a wee bit short this time of year.

To do it, OSU will have a favorable path. It will host rounds one and two at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center on campus. The Buckeyes will host East Tennessee State on Saturday at home and will advance to take on the winner of Texas Teach and Louisville on Sunday with a win.

Ohio State is 29-2 and ranked No. 3 in the country. The Buckeyes have won 17 straight conference regular season titles and 15 Big Ten tournament titles after pulling off the double feature again this season.

Ohio State men’s tennis secures another Big Ten Tournament title

Big Ten Tournament champs again! #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s tennis program’s dominant run under head coach Ty Tucker continued on Sunday. The Buckeyes had already secured a Big Ten regular season championship with an undefeated conference run, and it doubled down with a 4-1 victory over Michigan on Sunday to win the program’s 15th total.

It was the third victory over the Wolverines this season thanks to an early season matchup in a nonconference tournament, the regular season victory, and the Big Ten Tournament championship tussle.

It wasn’t as easy as most matches, but the Buckeyes got the doubles point to start things off in Bloomington, Indiana. Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy started things off with a 6-3 win on court three, but that was followed by Michigan’s 6-4 win on court one to even things up 1-1. It took a tiebreaker for Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter on court two. Michigan served for the match at 6-4 in the tiebreak, but the OSU duo came back and rallied for the victory in a 9-7 thriller.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

The singles didn’t have nearly the drama.

James Trotter won easily in two sets, 6-4, 6-2, and that was followed by Robert Cash easily disposing of Michigan’s Jacob Bickersteth 6-1, 6-4. With the Buckeyes up 2-0 in the singles and inching ever closer to the tournament title, Justin Boulais beat Andrew Fenty after falling to him twice already earlier this year. He took care of business by winning set one in a tiebreaker and set two, 6-4, in the second to clinch the title.

Tucker has amazingly been a part of all 15 Big Ten tournament titles for the Buckeyes. He was on the team as a player for the first one in 1991 and has been coaching through the last 14. It has been one of the most dominant runs of any Big Ten program of any sport and has no signs of slowing down.

Ohio State will now turn its attention to where it heads for the nationals. It has been ever so close to winning an outdoor title, but that’s been the one thing missing through the period of success under Tucker. The selection show will take place on Monday evening, with OSU likely hosting the first and second rounds.

Ohio State men’s tennis claims outright Big Ten title

Congrats on another Big Ten title for the OSU men! #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s tennis team already secured at least a share of the Big Ten title earlier this weekend but decided to be selfish and take the title all by itself on Sunday, beating Indiana to polish off an undefeated conference slate. It is the program’s 20th title and 17th straight overall.

OSU once again got off on the right foot by taking care of business in doubles to go up 1-0 by securing the doubles point. Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter finished first with a win, downing IUs Patrick Fletchall and Ilya Tiraspolsky 6-0 in just 14 minutes. OSU’s Robert Cash and Justin Boulais started with a 5-0 lead over Sam Landau and Luc Boulier, then finished things off on serve 6-2 to secure doubles in its favor.

The singles matches went even better. In fact, all games were allowed to conclude with the Buckeyes sweeping all six contests. Ohio State won the first set in each and every match and went on to win in straight sets across the board to cap off a 7-0 victory.

OSU will now look toward the Big Ten tournament where it will be the No. 1 seed. Ohio State will begin play in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. ET vs. the winner of the match between Penn State and Indiana.

Ohio State men’s tennis beats Purdue to claim share of Big Ten title

Big Ten champs again! #GoBucks

The Ohio State men’s tennis team just keeps on rolling. On Friday night, the Buckeyes disposed of Purdue easily 4-0, but that’s not the biggest news to come from the match.

With the win, OSU clinched at least a share of the Big Ten title, it’s 17th in a row. Yes, you read that right; 17 in a row and counting. There’s no doubt that despite falling just short of winning an outdoor title over those years, Ohio State is front and center in the team picture for the best men’s tennis programs in college football.

And on Friday, the Buckeyes made it look easy.

Ohio State won the first two doubles matches to take the all-important point there to go up 1-0. Andrew Lutschaunig and JJ Tracy won 6-1 and Robert Cash and Justin Boulais took care of business 6-2.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

In the singles matches, James Trotter got the first win, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win to put the Buckeyes up 2-0, and that was quickly followed by Alexander Bernard, who also made quick work in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. And with OSU up 3-0, the last domino fell when No. 20 ranked Cannon Kingsley would finish his opponent by a score of 6-1, 6-4 to seal the victory.

All told, it took Ohio State just 24 minutes to win the doubles point and just a little over an hour to secure the three wins in the singles matches.

With the win, the No. 2 ranked OSU team is now undefeated in Big Ten play and improved to 25-2 overall on the season. Next up is a date with Indiana at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center on Ohio State’s campus Sunday. A win would secure the outright conference title. The match is set to begin at Noon ET.

Ohio State men’s tennis beats No. 4 Michigan to take over first place in Big Ten

A big one up in Ann Arbor for the men’s tennis team. #GoBucks

The No. 3 Ohio State men’s tennis team traveled on the road to No. 4 Michigan on Sunday with the inside track to the Big Ten title on the line. As the Buckeyes have seemingly done on an almost yearly basis, they took care of business when it mattered most in the conference, beat the Wolverines for the second time this season, and now sit alone atop the Big Ten standings.

The Buckeyes got the crucial doubles point by taking two of the three matches to go up 1-0 and set things off on the right foot. After OSU dropped the first doubles match, the pair of Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy won 6-2, followed by a 6-4 win by Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter.

On the singles side, JJ Tracy put the Buckeyes up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 25 Patrick Maloney. That was followed by a 7-5, 6-2 win by James Trotter to put OSU up 3-0.

Michigan would make things interesting with wins on courts one and two, but then the door was shut by freshman Jack Anthrop in a three-set 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, victory to clinch the 4-2 team win.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 6-0 in the Big Ten and 23-2 overall. Michigan drops to 4-1 in the league and will now need some help to get back even in the regular season Big Ten race that Ohio State has now won 16-straight times, looking for No. 17 in a row.

The Buckeyes are next in action against Penn State back at home on Saturday.
