Why UMass Will Win

FAU doesn’t seem to do the whole scoring thing on a consistent basis.

It rolled against FIU last week in a 38-19 win with the running attack rolling throughout, but this isn’t the type of team that’s going to normally win by winging the ball all over the yard or hanging up 40 in the first half.

The UMass defense could use the break.

Not a whole lot went right for the Minutemen in the first two games – losing to Georgia Southern and Marshall by a combined score of 92-10 – but if the pass rush can some how get going early, there’s a shot this won’t be a total wipeout. The FAU offensive line is having a rough time so far, but …

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Owl defensive line is living behind the line with the best pass rush in Conference USA.

Wille Taggart’s team can’t consistently find anything that works all that well with the passing game, but the running game is great, there aren’t a ton of turnovers, and the defense has been taking care of the rest.

UMass is having a hard time getting anything moving averaging just 190.5 yards per game in each of the first two. The D is struggling against the run, it’s not coming up with third down stops, and it should be steamrolled over from the start.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Very, very, very, very, very, VERY quietly, Taggart is putting together a strong first season at FAU. It’s beating up on a slew of mediocre teams, but it gave Marshall a push, the defense has been excellent, and it’s about to have a nice, easy win over a punchless UMass team looking for something to go right.

Why UMass Will Win

Did anything go right in the UMass 41-0 loss to Georgia Southern? Not really. However …

The offensive line wasn’t bad. It didn’t generate enough of a ground game, but it was decent overall, and now it gets a Marshall defense that doesn’t generate a whole lot of tackles for loss. The Thundering Herd is great at getting to the quarterback, but it doesn’t live behind the line against the run.

It’s all about incremental steps for the Minutemen. Merely scoring this week would be a positive, but they can turn it loose. There’s no pressure whatsoever, but …

Why Marshall Will Win

UMass really couldn’t do anything against Georgia Southern.

The passing game couldn’t complete anything down the field, the running attack had a few good moments, but not enough of them, and the defensive front got ripped apart.

The numbers are skewed going against the Georgia Southern option rushing attack, but if Marshall wanted to crank out 309 rushing yards against the UMass defensive front, it could.

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall should be able to call its shot. The offense will get up fast, put up a few good scoring drives in the first quarter, and then rely on the best defensive in Conference USA to close it down. Be shocked if UMass hits 50 yards rushing and 150 yards of total offense.

Georgia Southern (2-1) vs UMass (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why UMass Will Win

After a disastrous 2019, what should work for a UMass team that’s just getting started?

The offensive line is full of veterans and has enough size to be able to provide a wee bit of a push. Pass protection was a major problem, but the receiving corps is in play to be a problem for a Georgia Southern defense that’s giving up close to 300 passing yards per game.

Can the Minutemen slow down the Eagle running game? A whole lot of defensive parts are back, the experience is there to see a bit of an instant improvement, and there’s been a whole lot of time to prepare for what’s coming.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The Eagles are getting the ground game working like they need it to. It’s not controlling the clock, but it’s coming off a 340-yard rushing day in the win over ULM, the defense is doing a decent job of taking the ball away, and after three games, it’s going to be in football shape and UMass won’t be.

UMass has to do a whole lot to be night-and-day better than it was last year on the lines. The defense was among the worst in the nation, allowing 320 rushing yards or more in five of the last six games.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

UMass is going to need a while to get everything going. It’s not going to be pretty against a Georgia Southern team that’s had a hard time in three tight battles to start the season. The Eagle running game should blow past 300 yards in an easy win.

2020 Preseason CFN Independent Offensive Player of the Year

OT Liam Eichenberg, Sr. Notre Dame

OKAY, fine … so the Fighting Irish offensive tackle probably won’t turn out to be the best offensive star among the independent teams – but if he isn’t, he won’t be far off.

A few Notre Dame options like QB Ian Book or RB Jafar Armstrong might be flashier options, and don’t sleep on what Liberty RB Joshua Mack could do with a bigger role. Eichenberg, though, might just be the first draft pick off the board among all the options.

[vertical-gallery id=516414]

He’s soon going to be some NFL team’s starting left tackle.

The 6-6, 305-pounder might not be as big as some next-level types might like, but he’s great as a pass protector and he can move. He’ll also be one of the key parts to make a great-looking Irish offense go.

2020 Preseason CFN Independent Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Sr.

S Kyle Hamilton made a whole lot of huge plays last year and could easily be in this spot, and statistically, others – like New Mexico State’s Rashie Hodge and BYU DT Khyiris Tonga – make a whole lot of noise.

Owusu-Koramoah is the best of the Irish defensive bunch coming into the season.

While he’s only 6-1 and 216 pounds, he’s quickly rising up the draft charts as an undersized-but-fast outside linebacker who flash into the backfield. Part safety, part outside linebacker, he made 80 tackles with 5.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss, and now he and Hamilton will spend the year wrecking a whole lot of gameplans.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: UMass Minutemen Offense 3 Things To Know

Head coach Walt Bell is about offense. The former offensive coordinator at Florida State, Maryland and Arkansas State has a brutal task to try getting the UMass football program going, and it starts with being able to move the ball.

The O averaged fewer than 300 yards and 20 touchdown per game with no downfield passing game whatsoever and without enough of a ground attack to make up for it. Now it has to move on without its best offensive star.

Cam Roberson was the second-leading rusher with 355 yards and two scores, but now he’s likely being moved to wide receiver. JUCO transfer Ellis Merriweather is a 6-1, 220-pounder who’s built to carry the workload along with 225-pound senior Gilberto Torres.

[jwplayer ipD5QeqP]

Four starters are expected to return back to a line that wasn’t miserable in pass protection, but didn’t do enough for the ground game. 6-7, 300-pound senior Larnel Coleman is a keeper at left tackles, and there’s decent size across the board.

The passing game needs to be able to rely on a steady quarterback after four got a shot last year. 6-4, 215-pound JUCO transfer Kyle Lindquist was brought in to settle everything down, but 5-8, 170-pound Andrew Brito is back after seeing time throughout last season, throwing for 830 yards and seven scores with six picks.

Leading yardage receiver Zak Simon returns after catching 32 passes for 355 yards and two scores. Brennon Dingle is transferring to UTSA, Jessie Britt is transferring to Duquesne, and top tight end Kyle Horn is bolting.

However, 5-10, 165-pound sophomore Jermaine Johnson is back after leading the team with 37 grabs – he’s a short-range target and 6-1, 200-pound junior Samuel Emilus brings a little bulk – he caught 27 passes.
