Why Duke Will Win

Syracuse isn’t stopping Duke.

The Blue Devils scored 79 in the first win – a 20-point victory – and hit ten threes, and they ripped it up in the rematch in Syracuse making 54% of its shots from the field in a 97-72 win.

How do you beat the Syracuse defense – at least when it’s working? You pass the ball around efficiently, and no one in the ACC does that better than Duke with a whopping 51 assists in the two games.

Normally you might think Syracuse – who hasn’t been all that great over the years in the ACC Tournament, but knows how to rock in the NCAAs and used to be great in the Big East tourney – is kicking it in when it all matters, but it’s catching the wrong team.

Indiana 18-3 when it hits 42% or better from the field, and Michigan’s defense allows teams to hit 45% of their shots.

Even in the wins the Wolverine defense is struggling to stop teams from getting easy baskets and it’s not doing a thing to stop the three.

Indiana might not have a high-powered attack and doesn’t take a lot of threes, but if it can just generate a few easy baskets and get on the move early, it’s got a shot to start its season over and go on a decent run.

Michigan vs Indiana: What’s Going To Happen

Can Michigan hit its free throws?

Forgetting that Indiana made all ten of its free throws its last game against Purdue, it struggles on the line. Michigan won the first and only meeting between the two teams back in late January because it was unstoppable fro three and idd just about everything right.

It was also one of Michigan’s best defensive performances of the season in the 80-62 win.

Indiana’s defense will keep this really, really close, and the offense will have its chances down the stretch, but the mediocre free throw shooting will prove costly.

The offense isn’t totally miserable. It’s not dangerous from the outside and it doesn’t do any one thing all that well, but the defenses allows teams to average 77 points per game and hit 41% of their shots – Toledo can shoot.

More than anything else, the Rockets should own the boards. Central Michigan can’t and doesn’t rebound, but it did in the second meeting and still lost. It was closer, but it still wasn’t enough.

Why Washington Will Win

This team is finding ways to win lately.

It collapsed as February rolled on, but it picked things back up over the last few weeks with a 3-1 run thanks to better shooting helped by generating assists.

The backcourt has to move the ball around and it has to generate makable shots. It sounds simple, but there are too many problems when the offense tries to force things.

It’s 5-0 on the year when coming up with 15 or more assists and 7-2 when it has 14 or more.

It came up with 17 in the first win over the Utes.

It’s not like beating Washington State, Oregon, and Oregon State is all that big a deal, but at least Washington is playing well – especially defensively at just the right time. What is it doing over the last few weeks?

Can the team that showed up against Georgia Tech in the 84-74 first round win come back to MSG for this?

Louisville played one of its strongest games of the year with a hot first half before putting it on cruise control. It wasn’t great defensively in the second half, but it hit 48% from the field, and most of all, it only turned it over nine times.

It’s Virginia, and this isn’t the best version. It’s a good team, but it’s hardly infallible and it’s not quite able to squeeze teams like it usually does.

It’s all about Louisville’s ability to stop the three. Virginia missed all nine three point attempts in the loss to Virginia Tech, it couldn’t hit from the outside in the loss to Florida State, and overall the team is 6-7 when it can’t get to 28% from three.
