Patriots announce QB Mac Jones has a back injury

Mac Jones has a back injury, according to the Patriots.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones will not be available to the media on Sunday due to a back injury sustained in Sunday’s 20-7 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Boston Globe beat writer Jim McBride reported the news after the game.

The Patriots struggled to provide much resistance along the offensive front later in the game, and Jones took some hard shots while trying to deliver throws from the pocket.

It was an ugly game overall for New England.

When plays needed to be made, there was never a go-to guy for Jones, outside of wideout Jakobi Meyers. That isn’t to say the second-year quarterback didn’t miss a few throws, including a deep pass to Nelson Agholor late in the fourth quarter that probably would have went for six points.

The hope is that the injury to Jones isn’t anything significant that might cause him to miss time. Backup Brian Hoyer would obviously be the next man up, if it came to that, with rookie Bailey Zappe waiting in the wings.

It’s a tough way to begin the season for the Patriots, who have the Pittsburgh Steelers and their vaunted defense next on the schedule.

Patriots QB Mac Jones was in x-ray room after Sunday’s game

Mac Jones was seen entering the x-ray room after Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones reportedly headed into the x-ray room with team medical personnel, following the 20-7 season-opening loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss commented on it after the game.

There’s no certainty of what he might have been getting looked at, but it’s obviously something to keep an eye on moving forward.

The Patriots got dominated by the division rival Dolphins on the road. After a strong start to the game, things quickly unraveled and started breaking down around Jones, who stood in the pocket and took some good licks.

One of the biggest concerns for the Patriots entering the season was the struggles along the offensive front. Granted, the unit did have some good moments, but there were also too many of those head-shaking moments that continued to cost the team on the field.

If they’re not careful, it could end up costing them their quarterback as well.

Patriots’ QB Mac Jones receives enormous praise from throwing coach

Tom House has high praise for quarterback Mac Jones.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is receiving high praise from his throwing coach.

Tom House’s name may sound familiar, as he has also worked with Tom Brady. Now, he is working with a promising second-year player in Jones. The latter looks to have another strong season after turning heads last year by leading the Patriots to the playoffs for a second straight season.

Jones has been busy working out this offseason with several of his Patriots teammates. He has also shown a commitment to the weight room, as his slimmer physique has opened eyes. In the meantime, the quarterback’s progress has impressed House, as he told Phil A. Perry on the Next Pats Podcast.

“The sky is the limit with this young man,” House said. “Here’s a young man that’s just at the beginning of his skill acquisition window, which is age 19, 20 until age 34, 35.

“What I see with these elite guys, they try to get a little bit better every day. Not 20 percent better today. Like one percent, two percent. And that’s what you see when you work with and hang out with Mac. You’re looking at a young man that is trying to get better at something every stinking day. The result will be that, what was a question mark about how well will he throw down the line, it’s getting better every day because he’s working at it.”

New England will need Jones to play at a high level, as divisional opponents in the AFC East significantly improved in the offseason. In Week 1 alone, the Patriots will have their hands full with Miami Dolphins wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Jones’ development will be key if New England wants to have a successful season. At the very least, it seems like he’s put in the work this offseason in hopes of avoiding a sophomore slump.

NFL.com writer believes Mac Jones is not a top-100 player

An NFL.com writer is questioning Mac Jones’ placement on the NFL Top 100 Players list.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones recently made his debut appearance on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022 list. Some were supportive, while others took issue with the rankings.

NFL.com’s Jeremy Bergman is among those who questioned the quarterback on the list.

Jones had a strong year in 2021. He tallied 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. In last Friday’s preseason finale, he got in some action against the Las Vegas Raiders in a game where he went 9-of-13 passing for 71 yards and an interception.

Despite an impressive rookie campaign last season, Bergman counted Jones’ inclusion on this list as one of several things players got wrong.

Bergman wrote:

“…QBs coming off their rookie year have cracked the Top 100 before, most notably Dak Prescott at No. 14 in 2017, Robert Griffin III at No. 15 in 2013 and Justin Herbert at No. 56 just last year. But each of those men had just won Offensive Rookie of the Year, an honor Jones looked primed to receive before being outran by the obvious correct selection, Ja’Marr Chase.”

Jones led the Patriots to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth in his first season with the team.

After starting out the season slow, the Patriots and Jones got into a bit of a groove with the rookie quarterback showcasing the ability to lead the team to six regular-season wins in a row.

Now, we’ll see if he can start the season off on a better note. Jones and the Patriots will go to Miami, where they both started and ended the season last year.

The second-year quarterback’s ability to win in Miami will be tested, as New England looks to begin the 2022 season on a high note.

Patriots QB Mac Jones finally opens up on locker photo of Bills playoff loss

Mac Jones talks about the Bills playoff game photo in his locker.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has a reminder of last season’s opening-round playoff loss in his locker. The photo was discovered earlier this month, and now, we know the reason why it’s there.

Jones received his first action of the preseason last Friday, as the regular season inches closer. He played a minor role in the Patriots’ 20-10 win over the Carolina Panthers by going 4-of-8 throwing on the evening for 61 yards.

Following the game, he went into great detail about why he has that particular photo in his locker, as transcribed by Zack Cox of NESN.com. It’s a motivational tool for him and something he uses as he gets set to enter his second season in the NFL. Two poems in particular also fuel him for motivation.

“I’ve always been a big fan of having motivational stuff in your locker,” Jones said. “My dad actually — the two things that he’s always showed me is the poem ‘Man in the Arena’ and ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling. Those are the two that are more important to me. But I’ve always done that. (The photo is) last year, but I think it’s motivation to just come in here and work every day.

“I do love the two poems a lot. That’s a big shoutout to my dad because he kind of gave me those when I was probably like 6 years old and kind of explained everything to me, and as I grew, I continued to just enjoy that. Actually, the ‘If’ poem was in Wimbledon, so that’s where he learned about it in the locker room in Wimbledon. So that’s pretty cool.”

Jones and the Patriots will need to have a strong 2022 season, as the team looks to keep pace with the Buffalo Bills. An improved Miami Dolphins team is no slouch either, as the duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle should give the secondary fits.

The Patriots have one final preseason tune-up before they go on the road to Miami for the season opener. They will take on Josh McDaniels and the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday.

Patriots QB Mac Jones complimentary of Matt Patricia’s play-calling

Mac Jones called Matt Patricia a “brilliant” football mind.

The New England Patriots have chosen to go with a communal effort on offense. Matt Patricia has had a hand in calling plays, although the team has not named an official offensive coordinator.

Patricia does have a bit of prior experience on the offensive side of the football, having been an offensive assistant in 2004. He called the offensive plays for the entirety of Friday night’s game after splitting the duties with Joe Judge in last week’s preseason opener against the New York Giants.

Quarterback Mac Jones was impressed with Patricia’s abilities and believes the coach can lead him to success in the future, as transcribed by Zack Cox of NESN.com.

“I think Matt, he’s done a great job,” said Jones. “He’s one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever been around in terms of football knowledge. Between all the coaches we have, they’ve done a great job preparing us. He’s really starting to get a feel for it. That’s the thing, he’s just growing each week and making sure that we can stack good days together.

“He’s very easy to talk to on the sideline, very easy, laid-back kind of type coach but he demands a lot, and I respect that about him. Hopefully we can grow for a long time.”

Patricia and the offense will get one final tune-up before regular-season action. The Patriots will take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday, as they face a familiar face in head coach Josh McDaniels, the team’s former longtime offensive coordinator.

Consistency offensively will be important, as Jones looks to grow in his second season and help the Patriots take the next step.

Patriots QB Mac Jones uses this photo for motivation ahead of 2022 season

Mac Jones uses one photo as a source of motivation.

Many athletes have sources of motivation that they use to help them prepare for an upcoming game or season. For New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, he has to look no further than the final game of the Patriots’ 2021 season.

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Patriots by a 47-17 score in the AFC Wild Card game in January. Jones and the entire Patriots offense struggled in the game. The quarterback went 24-of-38 on the evening, throwing for 232 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

It was a difficult game for a Patriots team that entered the playoffs limping a bit. They struggled during the back-half of the 2021 regular season.

Now, Jones is ready and motivated to turn the page for 2022. In the now deleted tweet, Brian Hines of PatsPulpit.com snapped a photo of the inside of Jones’ locker last week, per NBC Sports Boston. It appeared to be a picture from the playoff loss to the Bills hanging in it.

Buffalo will be a team to contend with in 2022.

They return much of the same roster as last year, and added eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller.  New England and Jones will have their hands full, as they look to improve upon a successful 2021 season.

Patriots WR Jakobi Meyers effusively praises QB Mac Jones

Jakobi Meyers threw his support behind Mac Jones in a recent interview.

New England Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is praising quarterback Mac Jones ahead of the 2022 season.

Jones had a successful rookie season that ended with New England landing a playoff berth. Several in the Patriots organization have praised the quarterback throughout the course of training camp. The wide receiver did so on Sunday during an interview with Mike Giardi and Scott Pioli

Meyers caught 83 passes for 766 yards and two touchdowns in 2021. The wide receiver was a frequent target of Jones, as the latter continued to get his feet under him throughout the course of the season.

Meyers had back-to-back games of 70-plus receiving yards at the end of last season and recorded his second touchdown of the year against the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 3.

In addition to Jones’ quarterback play on the field, the veteran wideout is particularly impressed by his demeanor off it, as transcribed by Keagan Stiefel of NESN.com.

“He’s just down to earth,” Meyers said. “If a guy went into the locker room right now and met Mac, you wouldn’t really recognize that he was the first rounder, the tenth pick, you know what I mean? It would just be like a guy, you might not even think he’s a football player.

“He’s just a humble dude, a great guy to be around. He don’t really step over nobody, but when he wants something done he’s going to make sure it gets done. So, you respect him but it’s not really a fear-based thing where he thinks he’s better than anybody. That’s why I love him.”

Meyers could still be a big-time target in what has become a revamped wide receiver room for New England. As he continues to grow as a player, his confidence in his quarterback is growing as well.

Bill Belichick beaming over ‘dramatic improvement’ and ‘tremendous strides’ from Mac Jones

Bill Belichick had surprisingly effusive praise when asked about Mac Jones.

At this point last year, Bill Belichick had very little to say about quarterback Mac Jones — except perhaps that he had a long way to go. This year, Belichick is singing his young quarterback’s praises as Jones heads into his second year with the New England Patriots.

What a difference a year makes, right?

“He’s made tremendous strides,” Belichick said of Jones on Tuesday during a press conference. “He did a great job last year, but he’s starting from a much, much higher point this year than where he started last year. His offseason work has been significant and I think everyone recognizes how well he prepares and how much further along he (is) than he was a year ago.”

Belichick detailed some of the finer points of Jones’ offseason work.

“I think Mac’s done a great job. He’s worked extremely hard. He’s got a tremendous work ethic. In all areas, I think there’s a dramatic improvement,” Belichick said on a Tuesday morning Zoom call. “His physical work and conditioning, working on his mechanics, working on his footwork, working on his understanding of our offense, of opponent defenses.

Jones nearly won the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2021 while he led the Patriots to a 10-7 record and playoff berth. He posted 3,801 passing yards,  22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 17 games. Though the season ended with an ugly postseason loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots are growing bullish about what Jones can do for the team in 2022.

Receiver Jakobi Meyers, for example, detailed the immense command Jones has displayed over an offense — which is undergoing some alterations. And even though the Patriots are making some adjustments to their playbook in the wake of former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels leaving for the head coaching job in Las Vegas, Jones is versed in what New England is doing.

“We’re just a lot further ahead in the conversation,” Belichick said. “The plays that we talk about or concepts that we talk about, Mac’s already done them before, and it’s easy for him to say, ‘Well, are we going to do this on that? Are we going to do this on something else? What do you think about splitting them a little bit wider or splitting them a little bit tighter?’ Suggestions like that. That type of thing comes up all the time. Now it comes up with the background and the experience of doing it.

“He might have had some of the same questions last year, but without really having the full knowledge that he has this year. He’s just a lot further along in the conversation, and we have a much better feel for what he can do, what his strengths are and how to play into those.”

Before Patriots fans going running through the streets in celebration (or running to their sports book to place a Super Bowl bet), they should hear Belichick’s final thought on Jones and the offense.

“I’m not saying we’re there yet,” Belichick said. “I’m definitely not saying that. We’re nowhere close to being where we want to be or where we need to be. But we’re definitely making progress.”

If the Patriots have an impressive season in a crowded AFC, they will need Jones to be as impressive as Belichick has made him out to be during the 2022 offseason.

Should we temper expectations for Mac Jones in fantasy football?

ESPN’s Eric Karabell is tempering his fantasy expectations for Mac Jones in 2022

Mac Jones is generating a lot of buzz, both on the field and in the fantasy football world. As fantasy owners begin to formulate a draft strategy, many are wondering what his stock is for the upcoming season.

Jones was in the middle of the pack fantasy-wise as a rookie. He was behind Jimmy Garoppolo but ahead of names such as Matt Ryan and the recently retired Ben Roethlisberger, per FantasyPros.

Last season served as a good starting point for Jones, and now the Patriots have begun to put playmakers around him. DeVante Parker and Tyquan Thornton headline the new acquisitions on the offensive side of the football.

New England sits in the middle of the pack with the 16th-hardest schedule for the upcoming season. Games against the Ravens, Bills, Cardinals, Raiders, and Bengals could provide a challenge to New England’s passing game.

Many pundits are expecting Jones to improve in 2022, despite the tough schedule. ESPN’s Eric Karabell has a more even-keel outlook, at least from a fantasy perspective.

Venerable Patriots coach Bill Belichick could not care less about fantasy football and wasn’t looking for statistical upside when he selected Jones with the 15th pick out of Alabama in 2021. He desired a mature, mistake-free leader to win games right away, and he got that as Jones started a playoff game.

He finished second in NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year voting to Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase, but barely in the top 20 among quarterbacks for fantasy points, falling short of 4,000 passing yards and 25 touchdown passes and there is little expectation of Jones adding to his stats in future seasons. Still, he is safe, with a reasonable statistical floor. One can do worse.

Drafting Jones in fantasy could be a safe move for a team looking to grab a quarterback in the final rounds of the draft. Surrounding him with strong skill players throughout the roster may be ideal for a championship run if with Jones under center.
