Ladd McConkey continues rookie season tear in win over Falcons

Ladd McConkey’s rookie tear only continued on Sunday with a standout performance in the 17-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Ladd McConkey’s rookie tear only continued on Sunday with a standout performance in the 17-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

The former Georgia wide receiver had already crossed the century mark by halftime, tallying 105 yards on eight receptions. He had been targeted by quarterback Justin Herbert nine times.

Before McConkey went down with a knee injury in the final minute of the game and was considered questionable to return. But before he was sidelined, he had amassed 9 receptions for 117 yards. He averaged 13 yards per reception.

He reached a season-high in receptions and recorded his third 100-yard game, with this one joining the 31-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals (123 yards) and the 26-8 win over the New Orleans Saints (111 yards).

Practically the entire Chargers passing game on Sunday rode on McConkey’s performance as Herbert finished out the game 16-for-23 passing with 147 yards through the air.

In the last three weeks alone, McConkey has targeted 27 times, catching 21 passes for 323 yards. He now totals 815 receiving yards and is well on pace to reach 1,000 yards as the Chargers head down the home stretch of the season.

To have accomplished what he did Sunday was particularly special as he returned to Georgia in an on-field capacity for the first time since his college career in Athens.

“We lost last week, and we wanted to get that taste out of our mouths. So it was good to come in here and get done and get rolling on the back half of the season,” he said.

McConkey has been playing through injury for weeks now, but it hasn’t hindered his game. And the fact he’s performing at the level he is with that just makes him that much more impressive.

He was asked about those hindrances but seemed optimistic about the future on that front.

“We’ll regroup tomorrow. Get back out there and get right next week. It’s cool coming back home, cool experience. Just so proud of my guys.”

McConkey headed into Sunday’s game with 698 receiving yards, the second among all rookie pass-catchers and behind only former teammate Brock Bowers. He has put together a long list of accomplishments already, adding to that Sunday as his 105 receiving yards were the most ever by a Chargers rookie in the first half, going back to 1991.

Keenan Allen held the record before with 104 receiving yards against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013.

Ironically, McConkey and the Chargers will hit the road once more to face the Chiefs up next on the schedule. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. in Arrowhead Stadium.

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win the AFC Wild Card

The offense has everything moving.

Justin Herbert was hurt early in the year, the receiving corps wasn’t quite right for most of the second half, and it’s been a bit hit-or-miss at times to find any consistency. But now – with the possible exception of Mike Williams and his banged up back – the O should be ready to wing it around.

The Jacksonville defense does a whole lot of bending without breaking, and statistically it’s just fine … against teams without quarterbacks.

Houston couldn’t move the ball against the Jaguar D. Tennessee didn’t mess with the passing game with Josh Dobbs under center, and the Jets were the Jets.

Dak Prescott didn’t have any real problems getting the passing attack going, and neither did Jared Goff, Patrick Mahomes, or Derek Carr – sky point on his Raiders career.

Herbert will spread it around and shouldn’t have too many problems moving the chains against a Jacksonville defense that’s awful on third downs, the Charger D is great at coming up with takeaways, and …

Why Miami Dolphins Will Win

This is how it was supposed to work.

When you have home run hitters like Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill in the receiving corps, and a quarterback with the upside of Tua Tagovailoa, the offense is going to come up with a lot of big play.

No one in the NFL comes up with more deep plays, and the Charger secondary is getting roasted too easily allowing 230 yards or more in three of the last four games – all losses.

The Dolphins might have struggled in a road loss to a strong San Francisco team, but the offense should pick it back up, there won’t be the four turnovers  like there were in Santa Clara, and the defense should be able to hold up against the Charger running game that’s the second-worst in the NFL.

Week 14 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win

Brock Purdy went off on the Dolphins.

The former Iowa State starter was good in college, but there’s a reason he was Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft. He went off for 230 yards in San Francisco’s 33-17 win, and now it’s Justin Herbert’s turn to have some fun.

He finally got to 300 yards for the first time since the win over the Texans in early October, and he should be able to crank it all up again over a Miami secondary that’s been a little bit rocky against a slew of mediocre passing games.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

The Chargers are 1-5 when allowing 370 yards or more of total offense. Miami gets off the bus cranking out over 300 yards hitting 370 or more seven times.

Expect both quarterbacks to go off, both running games to be ignored, and Miami to get more out of its deep plays when needed late.

Denver vs Los Angeles Chargers Game Preview

Why Denver Will Win

Is this when the offense finally perks up?

After the brutal 12-9 loss to the Colts when the offense struggled and the passing game didn’t click in the red zone, now the Broncos get a Charger defense that’s just okay at holding up inside the 20 and gives up the second-most points in the NFL.

It starts with the ground game. Take the pressure off Russell Wilson to connect with a receiving corps that isn’t on the same page as the quarterback and just start running and keep going. The Chargers allow an NFL-most 5.8 yards per carry, are coming off a hammering by the Browns, and …

Week 6 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win

Yeah, the Broncos just don’t score.

They passing game isn’t consistent, the ground game hasn’t done enough with its opportunities, and the O is the worst in the NFL in the red zone. There isn’t the power to run it in, and again, the passing attack isn’t sharp.

The Chargers have to be patient. The Denver O might not be good, but the defense is tremendous at keeping teams from winging it around. As long as there’s a balance like there was last week against the Browns, and the attack takes advantage of every scoring opportunity, all will be fine.

Get to 17 points and take your chances. But ..

Week 6 NFL Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Charger defense is way too leaky.

Denver’s offense will get a touchdown on a first quarter drive, Wilson will be good, and then it’ll all stop. The early scoring won’t translate into the second half when Justin Herbert comes up with two touchdown passes set up by another good day from the ground game.
