Experts picking Panthers over Washington for Week 13 matchup

Nobody thinks the Panthers can upset the Saints on Sunday.

The experts were all in on the Saints last week over the Panthers. This time pretty much everybody is picking Carolina over Washington.

Here’s a review of this week’s expert picks.

ESPN: Panthers

Everybody at ESPN is predicting a Panthers win, including the Pigskin Pick em’ machine.

CBS Sports: Panthers

It’s the same thing at CBS, where all eight experts are picking Carolina.

SB Nation: Panthers

Nine out of 10 panelists for SB Nation are also picking the Panthers. Alexis Chassen is going with Washington.

NFL.com: Panthers

Gregg Rosenthal at NFL.com has Carolina winning 23-14.

USA Today: Panthers

It’s another sweep at USA Today, where everyone is predicting a Panthers win.

Pro Football Focus: Panthers

More of the same at PFF, with all eight on Carolina’s side.

If you’ve seen Washington play this year, you know they’re a hot mess. Until Dwayne Haskins develops more, it’s going to be tough for them to compete with anybody, especially on the road. Panthers 31, Redskins 17.

Norv Turner says D.J. Moore is ‘becoming a complete receiver’

Panthers fans who are feeling down about their team and are looking for things to be thankful about today should reflect on D.J. Moore.

Panthers fans who are feeling down about their team and are looking for things to be thankful about today should reflect on D.J. Moore.

About a month ago, Moore was having a mediocre second NFL season. Despite consistently moving the chains, he wasn’t making the kind of impact one usually expects from a top-notch prospect. Some people were openly wondering if Moore was really worth a first-round pick to begin with.

Over the last four games, Moore has utterly destroyed that idea with a string of fantastic performances.

Offensive coordinator Norv Turner told reporters today that he’s becoming a complete receiver, per Alaina Getzenberg at the Charlotte Observer.

On film, Moore’s improved route running is what jumps out most. The separation he’s getting is far better than it had been in his first season and a half in the NFL.

Here’s a look at what Moore has done over the last month.

Opponent Catches/Targets Yards Yards/catch Touchdowns
Titans 7/10 101 14.43 0
Packers 9/11 120 13.33 0
Falcons 8/15 95 11.88 0
Saints 6/9 126 21.00 2

Solid stuff. Moore is now up to No. 5 in the league in receiving yards.

Panthers S Tre Boston expects to be fined for hit on Ted Ginn Jr.

Panthers S Tre Boston expects to be fined for hit on Ted Ginn Jr.

Playing safety in the NFL properly almost requires you to make borderline hits every week that may or may not draw a fine from the league.

Tre Boston knows that’s the nature of the job. He told Joe Person at the Athletic that he expects to be fined for his hit on Ted Ginn Jr. in Sunday’s loss to the Saints.

Boston has already been fined once this season for a tackle on 49ers tight end George Kittle. The NFL hit him up for $28,075 for that one.

Ginn used to play for Carolina. He’s been relatively quiet this season, posting 348 yards and two touchdowns on 24 catches. Ginn might be worth considering as a deep fantasy football sleeper for his Thanksgiving game against the Falcons, though.

The Carolina Panthers have placed two players on the injured reserve list, ending their 2019 seasons.

Defensive tackle Dontari Poe suffered a quad injury in Sunday’s loss to the Saints. He underwent surgery on Tuesday. Left guard Greg Van Roten also went down with a toe injury in the same game. Both are now on IR.

As for their replacements, the Panthers have been trying to plug the holes over the last couple of days.

On Monday, the team promoted offensive lineman Garrett McGhin from the practice squad.

Yesterday, it was reported the team is signing former Raiders and Redskins DT Stacy McGee. That move is now otticial. The team has also signed Woodrow Hamilton, who was with Carolina during the summer.

The Panthers may not be done making moves. They released safety Rashaan Gaulden on Monday and haven’t added another DB as of yet.

Report: Panthers signing former Raiders, Redskins DT Stacy McGee

The Panthers are signing former Redskins and Raiders defensive tackle Stacy McGee, according to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN.

The Panthers are signing former Redskins and Raiders defensive tackle Stacy McGee, according to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN.

The team needed more interior defensive line depth with Dontari Poe suffering a quad injury in Sunday’s loss to the Saints. Josina Anderson has reported Poe had surgery scheduled for this morning, which would end his 2019 season.

McGee (6-foot-3, 339 pounds) played his college football at Oklahoma then got picked by Oakland in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL draft. After four years with the Raiders, he moved on to Washington, where he played the last two seasons.

In 75 career games (29 starts), McGee has totaled four sacks, 14 quarterback hits and six tackles for a loss.

NFC playoff picture: Bubble teams like the Rams are running out of time

Here’s an updated look at the NFC playoff picture after Week 12.

There’s still five weeks left to play in the NFL’s 2019 regular season. We already have a good idea who’s going to be in the postseason, though.

Here’s an updated look at the NFC playoff picture after Week 12.

Playoff teams

1. San Francisco 49ers (10-1)
2. New Orleans Saints (9-2)
3. Green Bay Packers (8-3)
4. Dallas Cowboys (6-5)
5. Seattle Seahawks (9-2)
6. Minnesota Vikings (8-3)

Still in the race

7. Los Angeles Rams (6-5)
8. Chicago Bears (5-6)
9. Philadelphia Eagles (5-6)
10. Carolina Panthers (5-6)

The gap between the teams that are currently in line for a playoff spot and those that are trying to work their way in is significant. LA’s mortifying loss to the Ravens on Monday night might have made it impossible for them to catch up with Seattle and Minnesota for a wild card spot.

If there’s going to be any change, Dallas could end up losing the NFC East race to the Eagles, which would give Philly the No. 4 seed. Other than that, it’s hard to see any of the other five playoff teams dropping out at this point. The Seahawks have been winning a lot of close games and are due for some regression. It hasn’t happened yet, though. Meanwhile, the Vikings have a pretty cushy schedule to close out the year.

Panthers open 9.5-point favorites vs. Redskins for Week 13 matchup

According to BetMGM, the Panthers are 9.5-point favorites this time around as they prepare to host the Redskins this week.

The Carolina Panthers couldn’t finish their epic comeback against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. However, nobody expected them to even compete considering they were 9.5-point underdogs going into the game. When you’re reeling from an emotional loss, a bit of home-cooking against a bad team can be just what the doctor ordered.

According to BetMGM, the Panthers are 9.5-point favorites this time around as they prepare to host the Redskins this week.

Washington remains a dysfunctional mess under the leadership of Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen, who alienated their best player in left tackle Trent Williams in the worst kind of way and then failed to deal him at the trade deadline. Williams won’t be suiting up for the Redskins again and it’s hard to blame him given the circumstances. This disaster is typical of a franchise that’s been floundering ever since RGIII’s knee injury in the 2012 playoffs.

As pathetic as they look, every NFL team is a threat if they’re not taken seriously. They are also coming off their second win of the season on Sunday against a Matthew Stafford-less Lions team.

There’s not a ton of history between these teams. They’ve met 14 times, with Washington taking eight, including the last one in October 2018. That team had Alex Smith at quarterback, though. Dwayne Haskins has time to prove he’s one of the top QBs in his class, but he’s gotten off to a rough start – throwing three times as many interceptions (six) as touchdowns (two).

Anything but a dominant win for Carolina this week should be considered a disappointment.

Panthers come in at No. 15 in Week 13 power rankings

Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire has Carolina at No. 15 in this week’s power rankings.

The Panthers came up just short against the Saints on Sunday. An upset win would have no doubt given them a big boost in our power rankings. Taking a Super Bowl contender down to the wire is commendable, though. Thanks to their gutsy showing in New Orleans, they actually moved up a spot.

Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire has Carolina at No. 15 in this week’s power rankings.

“The Panthers did enough to upset the Saints — they really did. Kyle Allen completed 23 of 36 passes for 256 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. . . It was a heartbreaker for the Panthers, but they have to be encouraged by Allen’s development and the knowledge that through most of the game, they were able to hang with a team that appeared to be much better on paper.”

Indeed.

If nothing else, Allen has proven he’s about as capable as any other backup quarterback in the league these last few months. He may yet develop into a legitimate starter if he can consistently avoid turnovers and show the same poise he has against the Saints twice now.

It won’t help them in the standings any, but Sunday’s loss proved this team has enough talent to compete with the best in the NFL. A change of leadership at the top might be needed for them to reach their full potential, though.

The Carolina Panthers just announced a couple of moves.

Offensive lineman Garrett McGhin (ECU) has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. They needed more offensive line depth with the injury to left guard Greg Van Roten. McGhin likely will be inactive on game days, though.

The Panthers may also be in need of a new kicker after Joey Slye missed three easy kicks on Sunday against the Saints. While Slye is still on the roster, the team added free agent kicker Greg Joseph to the practice squad, so they at least have another option.

Expect more moves to come this week. Defensive tackle Dontari Poe is reported to have surgery scheduled tomorrow morning for a quad injury.
