Brock Bowers rewrites the rookie tight end record book

Raiders rookie Brock Bowers has now broken several NFL rookie TE marks, including Mike Ditka’s longstanding yardage record

Brock Bowers was quite highly regarded as a draft prospect entering the 2024 NFL Draft. The Georgia tight end wound up proving everyone correct right away with an epic NFL debut season with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Bowers already reestablished the rookie tight end record for receptions, entering Week 17 with 101. In Sunday’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints, Bowers broke the record for most receiving yards by a rookie tight end. He hit the 1,072-yard mark during the game, breaking Mike Ditka’s longstanding record.

Ditka set that record back in 1961. His 1,071 yards and 12 touchdowns both represented career highs for the Hall of Famer Ditka, coming in a 14-game season years before the AFL-NFL merger.

Bowers surpassed the rookie TE receptions mark in Week 15, breaking the mark of 89 set last season by Detroit’s Sam LaPorta. Ditka posted all those yards on just 59 receptions in a very different era of football. With his 106th catch on the year, Bowers officially has caught more passes than any rookie regardless of position.

It’s already been an unbelievable season for Brock Bowers as the rookie tight end has unbelievably set himself up to possibly be the Offensive Rookie of the Year if his dominance continues. Heading into Week 14, Bowers has a chance to do something incredible in breaking the rookie tight end reception record with four more weeks to go.

 

The record was broken last year by a breakout performance from Lions tight end Sam LaPorta, with 86 receptions as a rookie. Bowers, however, is already sitting at 84 with a handful of games still left to go, and given the fact he is seeing over 10 targets a game, Bowers should break that record this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

 

While the rookie tight end reception record would be a feat within itself, it wouldn’t be outlandish to think that Bowers could also collect the most receptions by a rookie in a season period. This record was also set a year ago by late-round superstar Puka Nacua when he caught 105 balls on the season. If Bowers averages just over 5 catches in the next 4 games, he would also surpass that incredible record. Just really a dominant performance all around by one of the best tight ends in the league already.

Widely considered one of if not the best player in the 2024 NFL Draft, Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers has put together an unbelievable rookie season as he has emerged as the top weapon on the team and as one of the best tight ends in the entire league. On Friday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, Bowers continued his stretch of dominance in a close loss in a divisional matchup in which he could not be stopped.

Bowers was unguardable against one of the league’s better defenses, hauling in 10 catches, for 140 yards, and a touchdown. This has become a fairly consistent stat line for the star rookie who now ranks among the elites in the league when it comes to his receiving totals. Leading the league with 84 catches, Bowers lands 3rd overall in receiving yardage with 884 yards through the air, which puts him in elite territory in his first season.

We don’t see performances like this from rookie tight ends hardly ever, so to say the Raiders hit the jackpot with Bowers might be an understatement. With Bowers already established as a top 3 tight end in the league, the future looks bright for the young star and this Las Vegas offense.

Why Las Vegas Raiders Will Win

Call it a hangover effect, call it bad luck, or just call it a hot mess, but the Rams are in a total free fall with no real hope of getting out of it.

The stars are hurt, the offense is a shadow of its Super Bowl self, and the defense is giving it a go but can’t do much of anything meaningful against anyone who can throw.

On the flip side, the Raiders have won three straight with two thrilling overtime victories and a strong performance to get by the Chargers. Basically, they’re the trending-up opposite of the Rams.

Davante Adams has gone off, there’s a terrific balance to the attacks and the defense has ben a rock against the run. The Raiders are now 4-1 when allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards this season and 1-6 when they give up more.

Why Los Angeles Rams Will Win

The Rams are running well.

They’re losing, but Cam Akers has revived his season, the O is getting a little production on the ground from the quarterback, and overall the attack has hit 116 yards or more in each of the last three games.

The bigger key is the Thursday night aspect. Las Vegas is playing well, but it’s a dinged up team that’s gutting it out in certain spots. It’s nothing like the problems the Rams are having, but the legs are a bit fresher – at least in the backfield.

The run defense has been strong – this is the spot where Josh Jacobs might finally cool down a tad – it’s possible to throw on the Raider secondary, and …

What’s Going To Happen

No, Baker Mayfield isn’t expected to swoop in and save the day quite yet for the Rams.

Again, even with the wins, it’s been a bit of a grind for the Raiders with the two road overtime wins and tough battle after tough battle. This will be the fifth road game in seven dates, and the short week matters here.

The Rams might be sputtering, but they’re keeping games close. The running game and a prideful day from the defense allow them to slip out with a tight, low-scoring win to end the skid.
