Ashley Rogers leads Tennessee to victory over Missouri

Recapping Lady Vols’ win over Missouri Friday night.

Junior pitcher Ashley Rogers posted another stellar performance in the circle Friday night to help the Lady Vols find their way back into the win column.

Rogers surrendered just one hit and one walk in No. 16 Tennessee’s, 4-0, victory over No. 15 Missouri at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

Rogers had five strikeouts against the Tigers (35-14, 13-9 SEC), who picked up their only hit of the contest when shortstop Jenna Laird singled in the top of the first inning.

The Lady Vols (39-10, 12-9 SEC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Ashley Morgan singled home Kiki Milloy, who had three hits, a stolen base and two runs.

Ivy Davis had a two-run homer to make it 3-0 in the second.

The Lady Vols closed out the scoring when Chelsea Seggern’s single plated Milloy in the fifth.

Rennia Davis named TSWA Player of the Year

Rennia Davis recently completed her stellar basketball career with the Lady Vols.

The former Lady Vol picked up another honor Wednesday: She was named Women’s College Basketball Player of the Year by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.

Davis, a 6-foot-2 guard/forward from Jacksonville, Florida, was recently selected by the Minnesota Lynx in the first round of the 2021 WNBA draft. The Lynx took her with the No. 9 pick.

During her senior season on Rocky Top, Davis averaged 17.3 points and 8.8 rebounds, leading Tennessee in both categories.

She had 10 double-doubles during the 2020-21 campaign and scored 20 points or more 10 times last season for the Lady Vols (17-8).

Tennessee, which posted a victory over South Carolina in Knoxville last season, made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Lady Vols swept by Mississippi State

Mississippi State sweeps softball doubleheader against Lady Vols.

The Lady Vols entered Wednesday’s Southeastern Conference contest against Mississippi State having won four consecutive league series.

That streak came to an end as No. 15 Tennessee was swept in a doubleheader at Nusz Park in Starkville, Mississippi.

The Bulldogs (29-22, 5-15 SEC) edged the Lady Vols, 2-1, in the opener. Mississippi State prevailed, 6-2, in the nightcap.

The first game of the afternoon was scoreless until Mississippi State produced a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Tennessee (38-10, 11-9 SEC) scored its lone run of the contest when Amanda Ayala’s double plated Anna Fox.

Tennessee out-hit the Bulldogs, 6-4, and had three doubles in the game as Ally Shipman and Madison Webber came up with extra-base hits.

In the nightcap, Mississippi State wasted little time pouncing on the Lady Vols as it scored six runs in the opening frame.

Tennessee plated a run in the second when Webber had a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Kiki Milloy.

The Lady Vols pulled to within 6-2 in the top of the third when Ashley Morgan’s RBI double drove in Ayala.

Milloy Morgan and Ivy Davis each had two hits in the nightcap.

Joella Lloyd named SEC Newcomer of the Week

UT redshirt freshman Joella Lloyd named SEC Newcomer of the Week.

Lady Vol redshirt freshman Joella Loyd has been named Southeastern Conference Track and Field Newcomer of the Week.

Lloyd, a native of Bermuda and sprinter for Tennessee, received the honor after breaking a national record in the 100-meter dash at Saturday’s Tennessee Challenge in Knoxville. The mark stood for nearly three decades.

Lloyd clocked a time of 11.19 seconds in the event and shattered a 28-year old record.

The time also broke a 13-year record in the UT track program.

Lloyd’s time also ranks fourth in the SEC this season and eighth in the nation in 2021.

She also ran the second leg of the 4×100-meter relay for the Lady Vols on Saturday.

UT’s team posted a time of 43.59 seconds. That mark is tied for fourth in program history. It is also third in the conference and eighth in the nation during the outdoor campaign this year.

The Newcomer of the Week award was established by the SEC this season and is given to redshirt freshmen and sophomores who missed the conference’s season in 2020, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Lady Vols earn sweep at Auburn

The Lady Vols had to erase an early deficit on the road Sunday afternoon to capture their first Southeastern Conference series sweep of the 2021 season.

Tennessee, ranked No. 18 in the country, notched a 2-1 comeback victory over Auburn at Jane B. Moore Field. Tennessee has now won four consecutive SEC series, and with the win Sunday, the Lady Vols (38-8, 11-7 SEC) won three consecutive low scoring contests against the Tigers (26-19, 6-15 SEC).

Tennessee fell behind, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning as starting pitcher Callie Turner surrendered an RBI single to Auburn designated player Lindsey Garcia.

Turner, who picked up the win in the circle Saturday night, did not pitch past the second inning.

Junior Ashley Rogers entered the contest and posted a solid performance in relief.

Rogers (22-6) pitched in all three games during the series, recording a pair of wins and a save. She pitched six innings in the series finale, giving up one hit and striking out six.

The Lady Vols scored both of their runs in the top of the fourth inning when Ivy Davis came up with a two-run double that plated Josie Willingham and Ally Shipman.

Next up for Tennessee is an SEC doubleheader at Mississippi State on Wednesday.

First pitch for the first game is slated for 2 p.m. EDT in Starkville, Mississippi State.

The Lady Vols had a three-game set postponed in early April due to COVID-19 concerns within the UT program.

Lady Vols win series at Auburn

For the fourth consecutive time, the Lady Vols have won a Southeastern Conference series.

No. 18 Tennessee sealed its latest series victory when it withstood a late rally from Auburn, notching a 3-2 win at Jane B. Moore Field.

The Lady Vols will go for the sweep of the Tigers (26-18, 6-14 SEC) with first pitch set for 2 p.m. EDT.

On Saturday, the Lady Vols (37-8, 10-7) darted to an early lead by scoring two runs in the second inning and adding a another in the third.

Chelsea Seggern scored  the game’s first run when Ally Shipman stole second and took third on an errant throw. The throw allowed Seggern to come home to make the score 1-0.

A sacrifice fly by Kiki Milloy plated Shipman, who had two hits and stole a base against Auburn. Ashley Morgan gave the Lady Vols a 3-0 lead with an RBI single in the third.

The Tigers pulled to within 3-1 in the fifth when Maddison Koepke homered. Auburn added a run in the seventh.

In the circle, Callie Turner and Ashley Rogers hurled a combined four-hitter.

Turner (10-1) went five innings. She gave up one run and two hits, while striking out two.

Rogers pitched the final two frames to earn her third save of the season. She surrendered one unearned run, two hits and had two strikeouts.

Tennessee-Mississippi State rescheduled for May 5

Lady Vols’ softball series against Mississippi State rescheduled.

The Lady Vols’ softball series at Mississippi State has been rescheduled.

The Southeastern Conference series, which was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns in the Tennessee program earlier this month, will now be a midweek doubleheader on May 5 at Nusz Park in Starkville.

Game times are slated for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. EDT. Both games against the Bulldogs (25-21, 1-14 SEC) will be streamed on SEC Network+.

The No. 17 Lady Vols (35-8, 8-7 SEC) had their midweek doubleheader canceled at Western Carolina on Tuesday due to a mutual decision by both schools.

The cancellation was not COVID-19 related.

Tennessee, which travels to Auburn for a three-game series against the Tigers, has won its last three SEC sets.

Lady Vols fall to Georgia in extra innings

Recapping Lady Vols’ loss to Georgia Sunday.

Despite out-hitting No. 21 Georgia (29-14, 7-11 SEC), the Lady Vols dropped an extra-inning game to the Bulldogs Sunday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium, 11-8.

No. 17 Tennessee had the potential winning run on third base in the bottom of the eighth, but could not score.

Georgia won the game in the top of the ninth on a three-run homer by Jayda Kearney.

The Lady Vols (35-8, 8-7 SEC) could not score in their half of the frame, but overcame an 8-3 deficit with five unanswered runs to force the game into extra innings.

Ashley Morgan had a pair of two-run doubles for Tennessee, including one that tied the game, 8-8 in the fifth.

Morgan went 6-for-10 during the weekend set and helped the Lady Vols win its third consecutive conference series. Tennessee out-hit Georgia, 11-9, in Sunday’s contest.

Kearney’s game-winning blast was one of three home runs for Georgia. Ellie Armistead and Lacey Fincher also had homers in the series finale for the Bulldogs.

Tennessee sets meet records in Louisville

Wrap-up of second day at Louisville track meet.

The University of Tennessee men’s and women’s track and field teams had a big day Saturday to close out the Clark Wood Open meet on a cold and rainy day in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Volunteers and Lady Vols combined to set a pair of meet records on the second day at Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park.

In the men’s triple jump, graduate transfer Jah-Nhai Perinchief, making his outdoor debut for the Vols, posted a mark of 16.04 meters (52 feet, 7.5 inches) to set a meet record.

Perinchief transferred to UT from Texas Tech. His mark in the triple jump is the seventh best in the history of the outdoor program.

In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Lady Vol redshirt junior Alexis Duncan set a meet record by posting a time of 13.26 seconds in the event.

Tennessee’s Domonique Turner finished second in the race with a season-best time of 13.31.

Other personal bests for UT included Ainsley Cooper’s effort in the women’s 1,500-meter run as she completed the race in 4 minutes, 46.80 seconds.

Abigail Smith clocked a time of 10:49. 32 in the women’s 3,000-meter run. Her mark is a personal best.

In the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, the Vols’ Matthew McMillan posted a personal best time of 9:28.82.

Tennessee athletes record personal bests in Clark Wood Open

Tennessee track athletes set personal best marks Friday.

Several University of Tennessee track and field athletes posted personal best marks on the first day of the Clark Wood Open in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday.

In the men’s long jump, Carey McLeod broke the school long jump record as he leapt 8.21 meters (26 feet, 11-25 inches) in his first attempt.

He broke the Volunteers’ previous record, which was set by Darius Pemberton in 1995. Pemberton’s jump was 8.00 meters (26-3).

McLeod now has the second best mark in the NCAA and is fifth in the world for the 2021 outdoor season.

Also in the men’s long jump, Anthony Riley helped UT claim the first two spots in the event as he came in second with a mark 7.54 meters (24-9).

In the women’s long jump, Tennessee’s Prom’Myse Hoosier recorded a personal best leap of 6.33 meters (20-9.25) to win the competition in Louisville and set a meet record.

In the men’s high jump, the Vols’ Darryl Sullivan posted a mark of 2.27 meters (7-5.25) and had a personal outdoor best. He is No. 7 in the world.

Other personal records for Tennessee Friday included: Emily Knight’s time in the women’s 800-meter run (2 minutes, 13.74 seconds); Kiarra Rhodes (women’s long jump, 5.85 meters, 19-2.5); and Will Mazur (men’s 800-meter run, 1:52. 20).
