Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcat run defense has been solid. If you can’t at least slow the Iowa State ground game, you can’t beat Iowa State.

K-State has only allowed more than 200 rushing yards once, even though they don’t get into the backfield on a regular basis.

The Wildcat passing game has a decent downfield game, the special teams continue to be solid, and the team should be able to tilt the field enough to make a difference. As always, Kansas State does all of the little things right.

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Cyclones might have the best running back in college football – at least the potential top back this year.

Breece Hall has hit the 100-yard mark in every game, getting over 1,000 yards last week with a 133-yard, two-score day in the win over Baylor. The Cyclones are running well against everyone – they lead the Big 12 in rushing – and they might have the formula to work against Kansas State.

The Wildcats aren’t doing much on third downs and they’re last in the Big 12 in first downs. Iowa State is great at controlling the clock, the D is excellent on third downs, and Hall and company should keep things moving.

What’s Going To Happen

What’s going wrong for Kansas State? The offense had to go against two of the Big 12’s best defenses – West Virginia and Oklahoma State – and the O stalled.

Third downs and moving the chains have been an issue, failing to convert 30% of its chances in three of the last four games, and that’s going to be a killer against this Cyclone team.

Iowa State won’t do anything fancy. Run Hall, control the clock, rely on the D to keep the Wildcats from going off.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys might have lost to Texas in a painful way, but the defense was still good, and the passing game was great.

The Oklahoma State running game will always be the Oklahoma State running game – even if it doesn’t hit 200 yards like it didn’t against the Longhorns, it’s still effective – but having Spencer Sanders back has made a difference.

The sophomore has hit 70% of his passes, bombed away for 400 yards last week with four touchdowns, and now he gets a Kansas State defense that’s been hammered hard through the air by anyone but TCU.

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State is coming off a total clunker of a 37-10 loss to West Virginia, but overall the team is still doing Kansas State-like things to be in the mix for a Big 12 Championship appearance.

The special teams are terrific, the team leads the league in turnover margin, and get inside the 20, and points are automatic. The offensive line is playing well enough to keep the dangerous Oklahoma State pass rush from dominating, and freshman QB Will Howard needs the time.

But it goes back to turnover margin. Oklahoma State will give the ball up a bit, and Kansas State will take it away – the Cats will be +2.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State will bounce back from the West Virginia loss with a whole lot better a performance at home. However, Oklahoma State’s defense will keep on producing, the offensive balance will be steady, and everything will get back on track after last week’s disappointment.

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcat defense has been able to step up after starting quarterback Skylar Thompson went down.

This is the Big 12, where 400-yard days of total offense just get you in the door. Texas Tech was able to get 404 yards on the Cats, and that’s it – no one else has been able to crank up the O, and that includes Oklahoma.

Will Howard was terrific against Kansas and isn’t turning the ball over, the defense leads the Big 12 in takeaways, and the team has been able to keep on rolling through a whole lot of adversity.

As always, the team seems to be able to create a whole lot of breaks – no one has yet to make a field goal against the Cats, missing all five attempts.

However …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Kansas State isn’t great on third downs on either side of the ball, the pass rush is just okay, and the run defense can be pushed when tested. Turnover margin hasn’t been everything for the Wildcats, but it has played a huge role.

West Virginia only lost the turnover margin once – the -2 came in the win over Baylor.

The offense has stepped up the passing game, the defense has been excellent against the run, and the team leads the conference in total defense thanks to a strong line and a great pass rush.

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia is 3-0 this season when allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards, and 0-2 when giving up more than the mark. Kansas State’s ground game isn’t dominant, but it’s had no problems getting over 100 yards in any of the last three games.

However, West Virginia is 3-0 at home. The defenses are going to keep the score low, with the Mountaineers coming through with enough of a passing game in the fourth quarter to bounce back from the loss to Texas Tech.

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks hung around with West Virginia for a while. It was a 38-17 loss, but at least it was a good step forward.

Overall, the secondary hasn’t been all that bad – it got ripped up a bit by the Mountaineers, and the game still didn’t get out of hand – and there likely won’t be too much to worry about from the Kansas State offense.

With QB Skylar Thompson out, the Wildcat attack struggled to get the passing game going against TCU with just 117 yards. Will Howard only hit 8-of-19 passes for 117 yards and a pick, but ….

Howard ran for 86 yards against the Horned Frogs, and …

Pooka is done.

Kansas star RB Pooka Williams ran for just 196 yards in the first four games, and now he’s gone, opting out on the rest of the season. This isn’t a Kansas team that can afford to lose playmakers.

Everything has to go right to pul the Jayhawks up out of the nosedive, but there’s sign to be a problem with that – they don’t take the ball away, and Kansas State doesn’t give it up.

This isn’t going to be a hard equation for Kansas State. Run the ball, control the clock, control the tempo, don’t make mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a rivalry game, so always throw in whatever clichés you see fit. The harsh reality is that Kansas is awful, and there’s nothing that will make the lines any better.

Kansas State isn’t going to take any chances, it’s going to win on the lines, and it’ll hold the ball for well over 35 minutes on the way to a workmanlike win.
