The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Previewing Week 15’s biggest NFL matchups

In the latest “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys get into Week 16’s biggest matchups, the BIlls’ run game, and the Eagles’ backslide.

It’s time for Week 16 of the 2023 NFL season, and Greg Cosell of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup, and Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire and the USA Today Sports Media Group, are here to get you ready for the most important games and interesting matchups:

Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings — How rookies Sam LaPorta and Jahmyr Gibbs have come to define the Lions’ offense, and what the Bengals may have taught the rest of the NFL about how to attack Brian Flores’ crazy-quilt Vikings defense.

Dallas Cowboys at Miami Dolphins — Why the Cowboys had best be ready for Raheem Mostert and Miami’s run game, and the keys to the Dolphins’ drastic defensive improvement in the second half of the season.

Baltimore Ravens at San Francisco 49ers — Speaking of drastic defensive improvement in the second half of the season, did you know that the 49ers rank first in the NFL in Defensive DVOA since Week 10? A severe test for Lamar Jackson and Baltimore’s offense, especially without rookie running back Keaton Mitchell.

The guys also get into how the Seattle Seahawks beat the Philadelphia Eagles with the same play twice, and the Buffalo Bills’ amazing journey into becoming a force in the run game.

Watching tape and talking music with New York Jets cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner

New York Jets cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner recently sat down with Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar to talk music and watch some game tape.

Great players can’t always control their circumstances.

In the case of New York Jets cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, who came off a 2022 season that saw him win the consensus Defensive Rookie of the Year award, the expectations were that with the addition of Aaron Rodgers, the Jets were Super Bowl bound. Of course, that went out the window when Rodgers was lost for the season early in the team’s regular season debut, and at that point, you just have to make the best of it.

Which is exactly what Gardner and the Jets’ defense has done. While Gang Green has rifled through quarterbacks, and the offense ranks last in the NFL in DVOA, the defense ranks third, behind only the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens. Gardner has been a big part of that, allowing 27 catches on 44 targets for 236 yards, 75 yards after the catch, one touchdown, no interceptions, and an opponent passer rating of 83.1. Gardner and his guys on that side of the ball have maintained a standard of performance with no margin for error.

I recently got to sit down with Gardner and go through some of his best plays from the 2023 season. Gardner was representing his role in Verizon and UNINTERRUPTED’s “Verizon Run the Playlist,” a one-of-a-kind content series offering exclusive access to the music that inspires fans’ favorite NFL teams,

Doug Farrar: First of all, tell me about your involvement in “Run The Playlist.” The Jets playlist must be of specific interest to you. Were there specific songs you wanted on that playlist?

Sauce Gardner: I feel like the ones I chose were the ones that specifically stuck with us throughout the season. Like “SkeeYee” by Sexyy Red was in Hard Knocks — we used that in training camp. There was another song called “Talk” by Yeat, that’s one of Garrett Wilson’s favorite songs. Those two songs kind of summarize the season.

DF: I’ve talked to other cornerbacks through the years – most specifically Richard Sherman – about how interceptions aren’t usually the best arbiter of performance. This would seem to be the case with you this season, because you don’t have an interception yet this season, but you’ve played very well. How do you feel about the lack of picks?

SG: I just feel that I could have gotten the ones back that I didn’t. Make the most of those opportunities. At the end of the day, I’m not getting targeted much, but I still had those opportunities earlier in the season.

DF: You rarely travel from side to side – this season, you have 93% of your snaps on the defensive left side, whether it’s outside, the slot, or a split alignment. Is this your preference, or would you perhaps like to move around more often?

SG: It doesn’t matter to me — wherever the coaches want me, I’m gonna play.

DF: I’m in Seattle, so I know how good D.J. Reed was up here. What makes him such a great (and underrated) cornerback?

SG: Man, he’s just always working. He’s always watching film, taking care of his body, and finding ways to get better. He’s a guy I always watch, and that’s my dog right there. We’re always with each other, picking each other’s brains, asking each other what we see from receivers, and what we can expect.

DF: Through the season, the Jets’ defense has been on point. What does that say about you guys that you’re able to maintain a level of performance regardless? And what does that say about head coach Robert Saleh?

SG: We’re hungry. We’re always finding ways to get better. We play fast — Coach Saleh, he always tells us what to expect, and who we need to stop when we’re playing against an offense. He’s a defensive head coach, so he knows everything about our defense. He’s a great head coach, and we appreciate having him. [The problems] happened on offense, and they’re our brothers, but as a defense, we still have our jobs to do.

With that, let’s get into the job Sauca Gardner has done this season.

Aaron Rodgers won’t play again for Jets this season

Aaron Rodgers is not ready to return and is done for the season

The New York Jets are out of contention for the playoffs and that means Aaron Rodgers won’t see the field for Gang Green in this regular season.

Rodgers went on “The Pat McAfee Show” for his regular Tuesday appearance and provided the update that he is not 100% yet.

Worst of the Week for Week 15: Pickens and Toney, Sean Payton’s meltdown, Ron Rivera’s folly

MIke Tomlin, Sean Payton, Kadarius Toney, George Pickens, invisible Panthers fans, and the Jets. It’s time for the NFL’s Worst of the Week!

Football is a wonderful, thrilling, inspiring game that can lift us to new heights in our lives.

But football is also a weird, inexplicable, at times downright stupid game that may force you to perform Keith Moon-level furniture destruction in your own living room.

So, as much as we at Touchdown Wire endeavor to write about what makes the game great, there are also times when it’s important to point out the dumb plays, boneheaded decisions, and officiating errors that make football all too human.

Folks, it’s time for the Worst of the Week for Week 15 of the 2023 NFL season.

New York Jets eliminated from postseason for NFL-high 13th straight year

The New York Jets will fail to make the playoffs for the 13th straight season, and it’s all about a horrible, putrid offense.

The New York Jets were eliminated from the playoffs today, which makes 13 straight seasons without a postseason for Gang Green. That’s the NFL’s longest current streak, and the longest such streak since the Cleveland Browns went 17 straight years from 2003 through 2019. Before then, you’d have to look up the Buffalo Bills, who went from 2000 through 2016 without a playoff game.

There’s no secret as to what the problem has been for Robert Saleh’s squad this season — it’s an offense that becomes more putrid as time goes on. Things were especially dire in the Jets’ 30-0 Sunday loss to the Miami Dolphins. In the first half, quarterback Zach Wilson completed four of 11 passes for 26 yards before he left the game for what was first termed “Hydration” and later was clarified to be a “Head injury,” and later, a concussion.

The Jets didn’t even make it past their own 42-yard line until the third quarter, at which point backup Trevor Siemian threw this helium ball of an interception to Brandon Jones.

Siemian finished his day with 14 completions in 26 attempts for 110 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 32.5 — which was worse than Wilson’s 44.9.

And if you think Aaron Rodgers is eager to return to this debacle, well…

Dolphins may have done Aaron Rodgers favor by clobbering Jets

The Dolphins destroyed the Jets in a thorough thrashing

If the New York Jets were thinking about returning Aaron Rodgers to the field in 2023, hopefully the Miami Dolphins quelled those thoughts on Sunday.

The Jets fell to 5-9 while being shellacked by the Fish, 30-0, in Florida.

Remember, this was a Dolphins team that did not have Tyreek Hill, who sat out with an injured ankle.

The Dolphins rolled to a 24-0 lead at halftime and coasted from there, getting a pair of field goals from Jason Sanders after intermission.

It was another quarterback fiasco for Robert Saleh, who started Zach Wilson and replaced him after a head injury that was not considered a concussion, whatever that means.

The Jets had 103 total yards on 55 plays. They had 55 penalty yards. They also committed four turnovers.

Rodgers could be eligible to be active in Week 16 at Washington. However, given the Jets’ record and non-existent playoff hopes the risk seems far more than any reward.

Jets erupt for 2 touchdowns in third quarter against Texans

Zach Wilson and the Jets’ offense has taken off … finally

After a first half Sunday at MetLife with nothing but punts between the Houston Texans and New York Jets, Gang Green exploded in the third quarter for 2 touchdowns.

It was the second time the Jets had scored 2 TDs in a game.

The first score came on a pass from Zach Wilson to Randall Cobb.

The next one came when Xavier Gipson took a handoff and found paydirt.

What did the first 30 minutes look like?

Breece Hall responds to 43K NFL fine for hit that put A.J. Terrell in concussion protocol

A huge fine has Breece Hall taking to social media to complain

New York Jets running back Breece Hall was fined $43,709 for a hit that left Atlanta Falcons DB A.J. Terrell in concussion protocol after a Week 13 game.

Hall was perturbed by the NFL’s decision to dock him a significant amount of money for the play that took place early in the game.

Twitter reacts to Zach Wilson’s reported refusal to play for the Jets

The Jets have poisoned their quarterback situation to the point where former 2nd-overall pick Zach Wilson reportedly doesn’t want to play.

The New York Jets’ 2023 quarterback situation, ending as it did in a competitive sense a few plays into the regular season when Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles tenson, is one of the worst in NFL history.

It’s bad enough at this point that Zach Wilson, the second overall pick in the 2021 draft who never quite panned out for the team, is now reluctant to return to the field for the team that drafted him — this per reports from Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.

Wilson had started a team-high nine games this season, but has been part of a merry-go-round that showed just how clueless the franchise was with any sort of backup plan for a Rodgers injury. Wilson has completed 190 of 321 passes this season for 1,944 yards, six touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 73.8. That’s not amazing by any stretch, but if you stack it up against the performances of Tom Boyle and Trevor Siemian, Rodgers’ other backups in this crazy quilt, Wilson looks like… well, Aaron Rodgers in comparison.

In their 15-8 embarrassment of a loss to the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday, Boyle completed 14 of 25 passes for 148 yards, no touchdowns, an interception, and a passer rating of 56.7 before being benched in “favor” of Siemian, who completed five of 13 passes for 66 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, three sacks, and a passer rating of 55.3.

As for Wilson, he was benched in the Jets’ 32-6 Week 11 loss to the Buffalo Bills, and relegated to third quarterback before the Jets’ 34-13 Week 12 loss to the Miami Dolphins. In that Black Friday game, Boyle threw a 99-yard pick-six to Miami safety Jevon Holland.

So, you can understand why Wilson might have some hard feelings about the ways in which things have gone, though he hasn’t come close to looking like a functional starting quarterback in the NFL to date.

The Jets next face the Houston Texans next Sunday. Stay tuned to see who will be suiting up at the game’s most important position!

Worst of the Week: Clete Blakeman, Jamal Adams, Ron Rivera, Broncos in the red zone
