Jaguars have talked to UF, UNF about relocating games for renovation

The Jaguars are, at the very least, preparing contingency plans in the case that they can’t use TIAA Bank Field during renovations.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have contacted the University of Florida and the University of North Florida to discuss the possibility of games being relocated from TIAA Bank Field during future stadium renovations, the schools each confirmed to the Florida Times-Union.

On Wednesday, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said in a radio interview that a two-year renovation of the Jaguars’ home stadium may happen during the 2025 and 2026 seasons, and that “the team will have to play somewhere else” during the project.

While the veracity of those claims by Curry have been called into question — especially when the Jaguars don’t even have a renovation proposal yet — the Times-Union’s report shows that the team is, at the very least, preparing contingency plans.

“The University of North Florida has had initial contact from the Jaguars, and we understand the team is exploring many options. No decisions from any side have been made, and we look forward to future discussions,” a UNF spokesperson told the Times-Union in a statement.

Similarly, Florida Gators athletic director Scott Stricklin said that the Jaguars “expressed interest in having future conversations about where they would play games during the renovation.”

UNF does not have a football team, but the school’s soccer teams and track and field teams play at Hodges Stadium, a 9,400-seat facility in Jacksonville.

The Gators’ Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is significantly larger with a capacity of 88,548. However, “The Swamp” in Gainesville, Fla. is a more than 70-mile drive from TIAA Bank Field.

On Thursday, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer’s office told Spectrum News 13 that the city’s venues staff hasn’t had any conversations with the Jaguars about the possibility of using Camping World Stadium.

Jaguars reportedly sign 5th round pick Yasir Abdullah

The Jaguars have a deal in place with fifth-round pick Yasir Abdullah, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Jacksonville Jaguars reached terms with another draft pick. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jaguars signed fifth-round pick Yasir Abdullah to a rookie deal.

Last week, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston reported that the Jaguars reached a deal with sixth-round pick Parker Washington. Wilson also reported Wednesday that the Jaguars have a deal in place with seventh-round pick Derek Parish. None of the three deals have been announced by the Jaguars.

Details of Abdullah’s contract weren’t revealed by Schefter, but it’s projected to be a four-year, $4,205,216 deal with a $365,216 signing bonus.

Abdullah was a highly productive pass rusher in college, racking up 23.5 sacks and 43 tackles for loss during his time at Louisville. The Jaguars finished the 2022 season near the bottom of the NFL in sacks with 35. The team hasn’t made many changes to address the issue and hasn’t yet signed a veteran after losing Arden Key in free agency.

Jaguars 2023 schedule leaks tracker: Every game we know so far

The Jaguars’ 2023 schedule will be released Thursday night, but a few of the matchups have been revealed ahead of time.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2023 schedule will be released Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET with coverage provided by ESPN2 and NFL Network.

Two of the Jaguars’ games were released a day ahead of time when the NFL announced its slate of international games. Jacksonville will become the first team ever to play two games out of the country in one season when it faces the Atlanta Falcons and Buffalo Bills in back-to-back games in London.

In the hours leading up to the release, some more of the matchups will get revealed ahead of time.

We’ll be tracking all of the Jaguars’ schedule leaks here ahead of the full release tonight:

Jaguars reportedly agree to deal with 7th round pick Derek Parish

Derek Parish and the Jaguars have reportedly reached terms on a four-year rookie contract.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly reached terms with another one of their draft picks. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston, the Jaguars agreed to terms on a four-year, $3.925 million deal with seventh-round pick Derek Parish.

A week ago, Wilson reported that the Jaguars reached an agreement on a four-year deal with sixth-round selection Parker Washington. The Jaguars haven’t yet announced any signings of 2023 draft picks.

Parish was a defensive lineman for the Houston Cougars, but is expected to switch positions and play fullback for the Jaguars.

In five seasons with Houston, Parish recored 16 sacks and 32.5 tackles for loss. During the 2022 season, he dominated a road game against Texas Tech, finishing with 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and 11 tackles.

Parish was the last of a franchise-record 13 draft picks made by the Jaguars in April and the third seventh-round pick. He’s expected to count $771,331 against the team’s salary cap during the 2023 season.

Jaguars to be featured on Roku documentary about 2023 NFL draft

NFL Films was allowed into the draft rooms of the Jaguars, Panthers, Colts, and Cowboys for a Roku documentary.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of four teams that will be featured on an untitled Roku Original documentary focused on the 2023 NFL draft, the league announced Thursday morning.

According to a press release, NFL Films cameras were given access to draft rooms and the documentary will also show behind-the-scenes looks at the players green room, team headquarters, and other aspects of the three-day draft.

In addition to the Jaguars, the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and Dallas Cowboys will be the focus of the documentary.

A targeted release date for the documentary hasn’t been announced.

While Carolina and Indianapolis both drafted a quarterback in the top five, Dallas and Jacksonville were both near the tail-end of the first round. The Jaguars negotiated two trades before picking offensive tackle Anton Harrison.

Jacksonville was also one of the most active teams on the last day of the draft, making 10 selections in rounds four through seven.

Lenny Curry: Jaguars may play elsewhere during 2-year renovation

Jacksonville mayor Lenny Curry says the Jaguars are likely to play at an alternate site during the expected renovation of TIAA Bank Field.

The Jacksonville Jaguars appear to be nearing a massive renovation of TIAA Bank Field. According to Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry, that project will likely force the Jaguars to play elsewhere for a couple years.

“Best case scenario, I expect that the renovation will take two years, two seasons,” Curry said Wednesday on 1010XL. “The team will have to play somewhere else. The goal would be to play somewhere in Jacksonville. Those discussions are happening. Two years is the goal.

“I know that [the Jaguars] are considering certain sites that are local that could accommodate them for at least two years. … The goal is to play those games in Jacksonville. I know they care about that.”

No deal is currently in place for the renovation, although negotiations between the city of Jacksonville and the Jaguars are ongoing. In October, the Florida Times-Union reported that the price tag for the project is expected to be in the $600 million-$1 billion range.

Curry, whose term as mayor ends on July 1, said that he doesn’t expect a deal to be wrapped up before the next administration takes over. He also said that the renovation will make TIAA Bank Field look like “a brand-new stadium” and that 2025 and 2026 are likeliest to be the seasons when construction takes place.

Any deal between the mayor’s office and the Jaguars will also need to be approved by both the Jacksonville City Council as well as the other NFL team owners.

While Curry says the Jaguars hope to play games at an alternate site in Jacksonville, there aren’t many options. Even if the team hopes to follow in the Los Angeles Chargers’ footsteps by playing in a tiny stadium (the Chargers played in the 27,000-seat Dignity Health Sports Park for three seasons), there’s no facility aside from TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville even close to that size.

Jaguars to face Falcons, Bills in back-to-back London games

The Jaguars will travel to London to play a “home” game against the Falcons in Week 4 and a road game against the Bills in Week 5.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will meet the Atlanta Falcons and Buffalo Bills in a pair of London games in Weeks 4 and 5, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Jacksonville has played one of its home games in England every year since 2013 with the exception of 2020 when the NFL’s international slate was cancelled due to COVID-19. That’ll be the case again when the Jaguars “host” the Falcons at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 1.

A week later, the Jaguars will play an away game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against the Bills on Oct. 8.

Both games will kick off at 9:30 a.m. ET with coverage of the Week 4 game on ESPN+ and coverage of the Week 5 game on NFL Network.

Jaguars president Mark Lamping, who previously told the Florida Times-Union that consecutive games in London was a strong possibility for the 2023 season, said that the back-to-back games will allow the team to maximize efficiency on its trip across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Jaguars are the first team in NFL history to play two international games in the same season. They will presumably have an advantage over the Bills who will attempt to acclimate to the travel to play a team that has already been in London for nearly two weeks.

Jacksonville’s remaining schedule, including a slate of eight games at TIAA Bank Field, will be revealed Thursday night.

Jaguars’ schedule rotation for 2023 and future seasons

The NFL’s 2023 schedule will be revealed Thursday, but we can already figure out who the Jaguars will be playing in future seasons.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will reveal their 2023 schedule Thursday, but the opponents have already been determined.

Schedule makers for the NFL rely on a rotational formula that ensures that no two teams will avoid playing each other for more than four years, at the most. It also means almost all of the Jaguars’ opponents for the next few years are set, as well.

The only exceptions are the teams that will be determined by the Jaguars’ finish in the AFC South in the season prior. For example, as the reigning champs, Jacksonville will play the AFC West, AFC East, and NFC West champions (Chiefs, Bills, and 49ers, respectively) in 2023.

Barring an adjustment to the current rotation or a wild scenario like a divisional realignment or an adjustment to the amount of games in the regular season, here are the Jaguars’ opponents in the next five years:

Elorm Lumor of XFL’s Battlehawks invited to Jaguars camp

The Jaguars are bringing in a pass rusher from the XFL for camp.

Defensive lineman Elorm Lumor, who most recently played for XFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks, received a camp invite from the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to the XFL.

Lumor is listed at 6’3, 242 pounds by the Battlehawks, so he may be a better fit as a linebacker in the Jaguars’ defense.

After spending the majority of his collegiate career at Rutgers, Lumor transferred to Towson for his final season in 2021. After going undrafted by the NFL a year ago, the Battlehawks picked Lumor in the XFL draft in November.

Pro Football Focus graded Lumor as one of the top players on the Battlehawks. After a relatively slow start to the year, he finished with four sacks in the last five games of the year for St. Louis.

The Jaguars finished near the bottom of the NFL in sacks a year ago, but didn’t add any defensive players in the first three rounds of the 2023 NFL draft. The team picked Louisville pass rusher Yasir Abdullah in the fifth round.
