The Final Four of the 2023 March Madness Women’s NCAA tournament is set and the teams are heading to Dallas, Texas.
This is the first time in program history that Virginia Tech is advancing to the Final Four and it’s LSU’s first Final Four since 2008. The two schools go head-to-head on Friday, Mar. 31st at 6:00 p.m. CT.
This is not, however, the first Final Four appearance for powerhouse South Carolina as they are looking to defend their 2022 National Championship and finish this season with a perfect record.
Iowa, however, is earning its first trip to the Final Four since 1993. Iowa’s Caitlin Clark cemented why Iowa deserved to be in the Final Four with her Elite Eight dominance. She became the first player in NCAA Tournament history to record a 40-point triple-double. The Gamecocks and the Hawkeyes battle it out Friday, Mar. 31st at 8:00 p.m. CT for a spot in the National Championship game.
Both games can be seen on ESPN.
No. 1 Virginia Tech vs. No. 3 LSU
This matchup is unexpected, but will be full of superb basketball. The Tigers are already on fire with Angel Reese dominating with double-doubles this season and seemingly endless stellar on-court performances. The Hokies are walking into uncharted waters for their program, but their head coach Kenny Brooks is leading the way and anything is possible for this team.
Both teams are coming into this matchup with some impressive statistics. Hokies Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore combined for 49 points in their 84-74 victory over Ohio State in the Elite Eight. LSU’s Angel Reese leads the NCAA in double-doubles with 32 this season. In LSU’s win over Miami, LSU guard Alexis Morris led the Tigers with 21 points.
Both sides are doing impressive things in this tournament and it is difficult to predict who might pull out a victory. In LSU’s win against Miami, 54-42, they defended strongly and kept the score lower than expected. If the Tigers can continue to use that sort of defense against the Hokies then they might pull out a win. However, the Hokies have a fire that will be tough to extinguish and if they continue to rack up points then they will punch their ticket to the championship game.
Pick: Virginia Tech
The second game features two red hot teams on a collision course.
No. 1 South Carolina vs. No. 2 Iowa
This is a matchup people have been hoping for all year and it will be the pinnacle of basketball this season. Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks are hungry for a repeat of last season and want to keep their season perfect. With big Kamilla Cardoso dominating in the paint and forward Aliyah Boston snagging rebounds and throwing up points, they will be an impressive opponent for the Hawkeyes. The Gamecocks come into this Final Four matchup after having defeated Maryland, 86-75.
Iowa’s Caitlin Clark recorded her 11th career triple-double with 41 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds in their win over Louisville, 97-83. Clark became the first player in NCAA Tournament history, men’s or women’s, to record a 40-point triple-double. Clark isn’t the only Iowa player to rack up some impressive stats in the Elite Eight. Teammate McKenna Warnock notched her 20th double-digit game with 17 points and five rebounds and Gabbie Marshall had 14 points.

If Iowa can pressure South Carolina and force turnovers then Clark will have the opportunity to do what she does and that will translate to a win for Iowa. However, this is new territory for the Hawkeyes and sometimes experience in these high-pressure situations equals victory. The Gamecocks have been here before and they understand what to expect. This gives them a slight edge over Iowa.
There are few surprises with Miami, Colorado, and Ole Miss in the mix of teams, but stalwarts are also accounted for in South Carolina, Iowa, and UConn.

The frontrunners in the tournament are still the top-seeded teams, but lower-seeded teams are peaking at just the right time and anything can happen in March.
The tournament’s second round has come and gone with upsets galore busting everyone’s brackets. Ole Miss’s upset of No. 1 seeded Stanford shattered the last bracket.
The team field is a bit diverse with only two No. 1 seeds remaining in the tournament, South Carolina and Virginia Tech, respectively. Ole Miss, Miami, and Colorado shocked viewers when they took down their opponents and made it into the Sweet 16.
The frontrunners in the tournament are still the top-seeded teams, but lower-seeded teams are peaking at just the right time and anything can happen in March.
With that said College Sports Wire tried to rank the remaining teams in the Sweet 16.
Three-time national champion Spencer Lee of Iowa was upset, ruining his bid for a fourth title.
One of the biggest upsets in wrestling history was lost in the craziness of yesterday’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, including No. 16 Farleigh Dickinson’s upset of No.1 Purdue. Perhaps even more unlikely than Fairleigh Dickinson’s own upset win.
Iowa’s Spencer Lee, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds and a three-time NCAA Champion was upset by No.4 Matt Ramos of Purdue.
Lee, entered Friday night on a 58-match winning streak and a career record of 98-6. He was a heavy favorite to claim his fourth NCAA Championship. Conversely, Ramos entered with a career record of 55-14 including 35-4 this season.
Ramos pulled off the historical upset despite trailing 7-5 heading into the final minute of the match. In the closing seconds, Ramous would pin Lee to ultimately win the match as time expired.
Now with his upset win over Lee, Ramos will move onto the finals where he’ll take on Pat Glory of Princeton. Both wrestlers will be looking for their first career national championships on Saturday.
The NCAA Men’s Wrestling Championships will conclude on Saturday with the finals taking place throughout the day. The NCAA Team Championship, however, has already been claimed as Penn State on Saturday morning won their 10th championship in 12 years and second in a row.
🚨 UPSET ALERT 🚨
(4) Matt Ramos pins (1) Spencer Lee! @Matt_Ramos2 is headed to the finals!

All stats are current through gamesSunday, March 12, 2023. While players like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, and teams like the University of Connecticut and South Carolina being on the list aren’t surprising, some other teams and players are a bit less expected.

The two then switch rankings when it comes to rebounds per game with Gustin taking the top spot with 16.6 and Reese taking second with 15.5.

Caitlin Clark could grace us with her basketball prowess for another two years at Iowa. She recently went on the Dan Patrick Show and shared that her COVID eligibility year might be something she utilizes. Clark is only a junior, so after next season she might use her COVID year and play for another season.
Caitlin Clark (@CaitlinClark22) has at least one more year with @IowaWBB, but she joined us today and said that she wouldn't rule out staying for an additional year after that. #Hawkeyes
This is a move that has become increasingly popular in this name, image, and likeness (NIL) era in college. Since college athletes are now able to monetize their NIL, thanks to the United States Supreme Court decision in Alston v NCAA, some are making the decision to stay in college longer to develop their skills, win championships, and make money through brand deals. As Clark adeptly points out in her interview, NIL is something that is still available to professional players, in fact, professional players were able to monetize long before the court case. This concept is not new and if we want to get a little legal nerdy, NIL as we know it is actually called the Right to Publicity and is an intellectual property right that is protected by law.
Clark is a basketball powerhouse at Iowa and is known for her clutch ability to score in seemingly impossible situations. She is ranked 12th in NIL valuation as per on3 with a valuation of $147,000 annually and has cemented brand deals with Nike and Topps, just to name a few. Unlike men’s professional basketball which has 30 NBA teams, 30 G-League teams, and numerous overseas opportunities, women’s professional basketball is a bit different. There are 12 WNBA teams with plans to expand by 1-2 teams in the future. That is only a total of 144 roster spots in the WNBA. Many talented players never get drafted or play for a WNBA team or professionally even if they are among the top players in their college conferences.
More options are opening up for women’s basketball players domestically with the launch of Athletes Unlimited, but many players still must go overseas to play professionally. That leads to many issues and problems for the players. Most recently the unlawful detainment of WNBA champion and Olympic medalist Brittney Griner in a Russian prison while she was overseas playing for a team there, brought the issue of lack of domestic opportunities for players to the international spotlight. But things are changing for the better and women’s college basketball fans are able to follow the careers of their favorite players past college with easier access.
If Clark decides to use her COVID eligibility then she will have time to continue to develop as a player, earn more revenue through her NIL deals, and potentially have more roster spots available to play professional basketball domestically. And who wouldn’t want more buzzer-beaters from Clark?
