Jags final injury report for Week 2: TE Tyler Davis lone player to be ruled OUT

The Jags will go into Week 2’s game against the Titans relatively healthy, but Tennessee will be without a key receiver.

Just like last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars only rule one player out for their Week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans and that was rookie tight end Tyler Davis.

Per coach Mike Vrabel, ascending receiver A.J. Brown (knee bruise) was ruled out as well as rookie running back Darrynton Evans (hamstring) on the Titans’ end.

The absence of Brown could be huge for the Jags as he put up 135 receiving yards and a touchdown on them in their last meeting. The Titans also went on to win that game handily by a score of 42-20.

Brown missing Sunday’s game will put the pressure on Corey Davis now, who had a solid Week 1 and led the team with seven catches for 101 yards against the Denver Broncos. Tight end Jonnu Smith could also pose a threat after hauling in one of the Titans’ two Week 1 passing touchdowns.

However, on the other side of the field will be Jags rookie CJ Henderson, who had one of the best rookie debuts of Week 1 with five tackles, three pass breakups, and a pick. Tre Herndon will be the Jags other starter at cornerback and will be coming off a game where he had four tackles.

Jags injury report: TE Tyler Davis out for season opener vs. Colts

The Jags will be without just one player to open the season against the Indianapolis Colts: Tyler Davis.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be close to 100% when they take the field Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. In fact, they only had one player on the injury report in rookie tight end Tyler Davis who is dealing with a knee injury.

Davis, who the Jags drafted in the sixth-round in April’s draft, has surfaced on the injury report since Wednesday and was held out of each session.

Without Davis, the Jags currently have two tight ends on the active roster in Tyler Eifert and James O’Shaughnessy. If the staff isn’t comfortable with just those two players, both Ben Ellefson and Matt Flanagan are available on the practice squad for a call up. The Jags could also use fullback Bruce Miller as a tight end, too, if needed.

Jags officially sign RB Dare Ogunbowale, send Devine Ozigbo to IR

With Devine Ozigbo recently sustaining a hamstring injury, the Jags went to the free-agency wire to find a replacement in Dare Ogunbowale.

As previously reported, the Jacksonville Jaguars were in the process of signing former Tampa Bay Bucs running back Dare Ogunbowale and completed the transaction Thursday morning. To make room for his addition, they placed running back Devin Ozigbo (hamstring) on injured reserve.

Ozigbo was projected to see a solid workload alongside James Robinson and Chris Thompson this year as the team recently waived Leonard Fournette. However, after showing up on the injury report Wednesday, his time on the field will be put on hold.

Under the new rules for IR (changed due to COVID-19), players now only have to wait three weeks before they can return from the list. There is also no limit on the amount of players who can return from IR in 2020.

As for Ogunbowale, he was a casualty of the Tampa Bay Bucs adding Leonard Fournette. He’s served more of a pass-catcher type running back since entering the league in 2017 and will enter his Jags tenure with 286 career receiving yards. Ogunbowale also has spent time as a special teams returner, with 360 career yards in the category.

RB Devine Ozigbo listed among 3 players on Jags’ first injury report

The Jags first injury report of the season only had three players, but one of them was RB Devine Ozigbo.

The Jacksonville Jaguars first injury report of the 2020 season only had three players on it, with one simply having a day off in tight end Tyler Eifert. The other two players to surface on the report were running back Devine Ozigbo (hamstring) and Tyler Davis (knee), both of whom didn’t practice.

Of course, when looking at the Jags’ running back situation Ozigbo’s injury is the one that sticks out. The Jags already have Ryquell Armstead on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, and according to Doug Marrone, he will be out for “a while,” which has concerned many fans.

Ozigbo is one of three running backs on the active roster alongside rookie James Robinson and Chris Thompson. They also have fullback Bruce Miller on the roster and Nathan Cottrell on the practice squad if needed.

As for Davis, his situation is worth watching, too, because the Jags would only have two tight ends left on the active roster in Eifert and James O’Shaughnessy, both of whom have injury concerns. Again, if needed Miller could serve as a tight end and the team has options on the practice squad in Ben Ellefson and Matt Flanagan.

Jags to hold LB Dakota Allen, safety Daniel Thomas out of Tuesday’s practice for injuries

The Jags added to players to their list of players to sit out of practice Tuesday in LB Dakota Allen and safety Daniel Thomas.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they would be having two additional players missing Tuesday’s practice session. Those two players were linebacker Dakota Allen and safety Daniel Thomas due to hip and hamstring injuries, respectively.

The Jags also announced that Taven Bryan (knee bruise), Dede Westbrook (shoulder), and Quincy Williams (core muscle) would continue to miss time, too.

Allen, 24, was a player who many expected to see more snaps with Williams out, however, it will be up to someone else to step up as a reserve weak-side linebacker behind Myles Jack. Some potential candidates to do that could be second-year linebacker Joe Giles-Harris or undrafted rookie Nate Evans.

Thomas, 22, was drafted by the Jags in the fifth-round of April’s draft out of Auburn. Some (including us) thought it was a possibility he could’ve pushed for a starting role, however, his injury is one that could hinder that. Still, even if he misses significant time, the Jags have depth at safety behind starters Ronnie Harrison and Jarrod Wilson as Andrew Wingard, Josh Jones, and J.R. Reed are behind them on the depth chart.

TE Josh Oliver placed on season-ending IR after foot surgery

Josh Oliver’s season is officially over as the Jags announced he’d be going on injured reserve Thursday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that tight end Josh Oliver was officially placed on injured reserve, ending his 2020 season. This news comes after it was revealed that he broke his foot earlier in the week and had surgery to repair it on Tuesday.

This is definitely a worrisome blow to the Jags’ offense as many were eager to see what Oliver could bring to Jay Gruden’s offense after being selected in the third-round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Last year, fans didn’t get to see a lot of Oliver as a rookie, either, as he missed all of the Jags’ preseason games and the Jags’ first six regular season games with a hamstring injury. He was limited to just four games when he returned as he sustained a back injury Week 10 against the Indianapolis Colts, sending him to injured reserve for the season.

Now, it’s on veterans Tyler Eifert and James O’Shaughnessy to lead the way at tight end as the No. 1 and No. 2 players at the position, respectively. That may worry fans because Eifert has missed over 50 career games, while O’Shaughnessy is coming off an ACL tear.

The Jags also drafted rookie Tyler Davis in the sixth-round out of Georgia Tech. With Oliver now out of the picture for 2020, the rookie will now get more looks and it would be huge for him if he impressed in the process of camp.

Jags LB Quincy Williams undergoes successful surgery for core muscle injury

Jags LB Quincy Williams underwent core muscle surgery recently but coachmen’s Doug Marrone isn’t sure on the timetable for his return.

It was announced that Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Quincy Williams would “miss time” with a core muscle injury last week and we now have an update on him. During Monday’s pre-practice media presser, coach Doug Marrone announced that the second-year linebacker had to undergo surgery to repair the injury and also revealed that it was a successful process.

As for a timetable, unfortunately, there hasn’t been one set yet but core muscle injuries often take approximately four to six weeks to return from. However, it’s worth noting the severity of Williams’ injury hasn’t been revealed.

Williams, 23, was drafted in the third-round of the 2019 draft out of Murray State. Coincidentally, he was drafted alongside tight end Josh Oliver last season, who also will be missing some time due to surgery this summer.

Williams was acquired last year as a result of veteran Telvin Smith retiring and leaving the Jags with a hole at weak-side linebacker. He ended up starting in eight games for the team, but had a brief period where he was benched as a result of struggling to adapt to the league’s fast-paced game. Still, he ended up with 48 total tackles and a pair of tackles for loss.

Williams’ injury comes as Marrone had announced that he liked the depth at linebacker last week, so the Jags should be able to maintain if Williams can return in the early stages of the regular season. Some non-starters who could fill his role as a reserve linebacker include Dakota Allen, Joe Giles-Harris, and Central Florida rookie Nate Evans, who the staff has mentioned often.

Jags TE Josh Oliver suffers broken foot, surgery scheduled for Tuesday

Jags coach Doug Marrone shared some bad news with the media as Josh Oliver broke his foot Sunday in a non-contact drill.

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Josh Oliver suffered a broken foot Sunday according to head coach Doug Marrone who met with the media Monday morning. This unfortunate news comes a year after he missed a majority of his rookie season, too, suffering a hamstring injury in camp and a back injury in the regular season.

Per Marrone, Oliver’s injury was a non-contact one and it occurred while he was simply running during practice. Marrone also announced that he’ll have surgery on Tuesday, but didn’t offer a time table on his return or discuss the severity.

Oliver was a player Marrone mentioned last week, stating that he was eager to see the second-year tight end’s development after he came into camp with a new and improved physique. He was set to help the Jags at a position that was considered a huge need to start the offseason, however, another veteran will now have to step up.

With Oliver set to miss the beginning of the season, the Jags have five tight ends on the roster still. Leading the way will be Tyler Eifert, who has injury concerns of his own (has missed 53 regular season games). However, it’s worth noting he participated in every game for the Cincinnati Bengals last season, and hopefully, that’s the case in 2020.

The team recently got James O’Shaughnessy back from the Active/Reserve list this month, too, after he tore his ACL last season against the Carolina Panthers (Week 5). But again, when looking at the positives, he was a favorite target of Gardner Minshew when healthy.

Behind the two veterans, the Jags have rookie sixth-round pick Tyler Davis, undrafted rookie Ben Ellefson, and second-year player Charles Jones. Of the three, Davis should be the one who benefits from Oliver’s absence the most, but only time will tell how the Jags move forward at the position.

Jags LB Quincy Williams to “miss some time” in camp with a core muscle issue

Jags second-year LB Quincy Williams will be missing some time in camp with a core muscle issue, giving Dakota Allen a chance to step up.

According to Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone, weak-side linebacker Quincy Williams will be missing some time on the field due to a core muscle issue. This comes as the Jags are in the process of their ramp-up period, working there way into padded practices which will take place next week.

Williams, 23, is entering his second year with the Jags after the team drafted him in the third-round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Murray State. He ended up starting in eight games for the team as a rookie, but struggled and was benched as a result. However, he still managed to accumulate 48 tackles in the process.

Now, with Joe Schobert set to start at MIKE linebacker, Myles Jack will start on the weak-side, making Williams the top backup at the position. With the second-year player being sidelined, Marrone said Dakota Allen will take a majority of Williams’ reps.

The time Williams spends away from the field could be huge for Allen, who was a seventh-round pick for the Los Angeles Rams in 2019 and joined the Jags’ practice squad last December. After being drafted, Allen was a player who flashed in the preseason for the Rams so the potential is there for him to impress the Jags’ staff. If he can, it could make the depth at linebacker more interesting as it’s a position where the Jags are already strong.

Jags remove TE James O’Shaughnessy from PUP list

The Jags no longer have a player on the PUP list as James O’Shaughnessy was removed from it Wednesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars removed yet another player off of their Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday in tight end James O’Shaughnessy. With his addition, the Jags now have zero players left with a PUP designation.

O’Shaughnessy, 28, is returning from an ACL tear he sustained Week 5 against the Carolina Panthers last season. The injury occurred on a play where Gardner Minshew II hit him for a pass in the flats, and in the process of trying to advance the ball, O’Shaughnessy went down and immediately grabbed his knee.

The veteran’s return is one that may be bigger than some fans realize as O’Shaughnessy was a popular target for Minshew early last season. In fact, two of his touchdown passes were to the veteran, who ended up finishing the season with 14 catches for 153 catches and two touchdowns on the season.

O’Shaughnessy will now join forces with veteran tight end Tyler Eifert, who the Jags signed in free-agency, and 2019 third-round pick Josh Oliver. O’Shaughnessy’s presence should also help the Jags groom rookie selection Tyler Davis, who the team snagged in the sixth-round of April’s draft.
