The Carolina Panthers, for the third straight week, gave their heavily-favored opponent a scare. But unfortunately for them, it ended the same way the last two did.

Here’s everything we know from Sunday’s nail-biting loss to the Philadelphia Eagles:

  • As expected, running back Saquon Barkley was the engine of the Philadelphia offense. The Offensive Player of the Year favorite rushed for a game-high 124 yards on 20 carries.
  • Carolina’s running back also kept his offense moving. Chuba Hubbard, who reached the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the first time in his career, notched 92 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries.
  • Quarterback Bryce Young kept the Panthers alive with his clutch playmaking ability. Young—who completed 19 of his 34 throws for 191 yards, a touchdown and an interception—helped Carolina convert on three of their five fourth-down attempts on the day.
  • The Panthers defense also gave the team a chance for the upset, holding quarterback Jalen Hurts to just 108 passing yards while racking up four sacks.

That clutch play from Young really showed up on the Panthers’ very last possession of the game, which started on their own 3-yard line down by six. He was able to trek his unit down to the Philadelphia 37-yard line, where they faced a fourth-and-9 with 37 seconds remaining.

Young, however, could not connect with wideout Adam Thielen—giving the Eagles possession and the ballgame.

  • RB Chuba Hubbard: 26 carries, 92 yards, touchdown
  • WR Adam Thielen: nine receptions, 102 yards
  • LB Josey Jewell: 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks

Carolina’s mini-NFC East tour will continue into Week 15, when they travel to face the Dallas Cowboys (5-7).

The Panthers’ hopes for an actual winning streak were scratched on Sunday.

  • Poor tackling from the Panthers defense opened up quite a few big-play opportunities for the Bengals. The most lethal instance came around the midway point of the second quarter, when Cincinnati wideout Ja’Marr Chase bounced off multiple would-be tacklers en route to a 63-yard touchdown.
  • The suboptimal form also leaked onto the ground, where the Bengals rushed for 141 yards and two scores. Second-year running back Chase Brown led the way for Cincinnati with 80 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Carolina’s ability to establish the run on their end kept them alive. The Panthers grounded and pounded for 155 yards and a touchdown on 29 attempts.

Despite being down 31-14 with under three minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Panthers made a ballgame out of it. Carolina chipped away with a 21-yard touchdown connection between quarterback Andy Dalton and receiver Diontae Johnson, and then a 48-yard field goal from kicker Eddy Piñeiro.

But the Bengals put the comeback on ice, forcing a three-and-out of the Panthers offense with under five minutes left in the game. Cincinnati then proceeded to bleed clock, giving way to a 46-yard field goal from Evan McPherson for a 34-24 lead at the 1:14 mark.

Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints game recap: Everything we know

Let’s be nice and just say that the Panthers didn’t exactly get off to a roaring start in 2024 . . .

  • The Panthers were beat by their offense, which converted on one of their 10 third-down attempts and one of their three fourth-down tries.. Quarterback Bryce Young, who was largely errant on the afternoon, completed just 13 of his 30 throws for 161 yards and a pair of interceptions.
  • They were also beat by their defense, which allowed New Orleans to score on every one of their first nine possessions of the game. Carolina ended up relinquishing 379 total yards and a Saints franchise record for points in an opener.
  • Oh, and they were even beat on special teams. The Saints got four field goals from kicker Blake Grupe, a 47-yard punt return from wideout Rashid Shaheed and a blocked punt from tight end Juwuan Johnson—who also scored one of the team’s five touchdowns.

It was over when . . .

. . . it started.

The Saints never allowed the Panthers a centimeter of oxygen, dialing up a 59-yard touchdown pass to Shaheed on the very first possession of the afternoon. Then, on Carolina’s very first touch, Young was picked off on his very first pass of the season by cornerback Will Harris.

New Orleans never even thought of looking back, scoring on each of their next eight drives.
