USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 football recap: American Heritage and Hoban fall, while Chaminade-Madonna rolls

The Super 25 will have another shakeup next week after Hoban and American Heritage fall.

The shakeups keep coming in 2023, with No. 17 American Heritage falling in a tough battle against unranked Berkeley Prep, while No. 25 Archbishop Hoban lost a close one to No. 11 Washington Massillon by a score of 7-2 — yes, 7-2.

Both finals will undoubtedly factor into the next Super 25.

For those seeking some normalcy, look no further than No. 2 Chaminade-Madonna. The top-ranked Florida program has continued to provide must-see moments while throttling opponents.

The Saturday slate in Texas kept things interesting as well, with No. 6 North Shore surviving a close call against Atascocita and No. 14 Westlake just holding on to defeat Austin-area foe Lake Travis.

Here are the final outcomes from around the Super 25.

Check it out: Jeremiah Smith is the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation…is he also the No. 1 quarterback?

Jeremiah Smith is a most unique talent.

Jeremiah Smith is a special talent and has a legitimate claim to be the top recruit in the nation. The Ohio State football commit is a five-star wide receiver who on Friday showed himself to be a five-star quarterback.

And also a five-star running back for No. 2 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Florida), who once again looked unstoppable.

Maybe the game plan for Ohio State football and head coach Ryan Day next fall to beat Michigan is to line Smith under center, have him heave the ball down the field and then let him run down the field and make his own catch.

Based off of the athleticism here, it might just work. According to 247Sports, Smith is the top-ranked player in the nation.

In Friday night’s thorough 47-7 win over Archbishop Carroll, Smith started the game with a touchdown throw off a trick play:

And then midway through the third quarter, he took a direct snap and went 65 yards for a touchdown. Impressive stuff from Smith, who is just such a unique athlete.

USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 football recap: Mater Dei rolls over St. John Bosco, plus a hefty serving of wild upsets

Mater Dei takes the CIF-SS crown, while Mill Creek, Buford and Colquitt County tumble in Georgia.

The CIF Southern Section Div. 1 Championship ended with a decisive win for Mater Dei, with the Monarchs stymying St. John Bosco’s run game while adding two pick-sixes off the passing game.

The flipped script on the regular season shutout hands the Braves its second loss of the season, while giving the Monarch program its 13th CIF-SS title.

However, the real shockers of the night came out of the Peach State and neighboring Sunshine State, where Colquitt County (Ga.), Buford (Ga.) and Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) suffered defeats in playoff matchups, and Miami, Fla. power Norland survived a close game—again!—against inner-city foe Central.

And to cap off the wild weekend, No. 21 Belleville (Mich.) lost a close one to Southfield Arts & Tech (Southfield, Mich.) on Sunday.

All of it makes for some interesting discussions (and movement) in next week’s Super 25 rankings.

Watch: Georgia football commit Dylan Raiola makes an SEC quality throw as Buford loses

Dylan Raiola’s high school season is over.

His high school career might be over, but Dylan Raiola stood tall and made some impressive throws on Friday night. The future Georgia football quarterback has shown in every game this season why he is the top quarterback recruit in the nation.

Raiola is a five-star quarterback for Buford (Buford, Georgia). His high school career is over with a 19-14 Friday night loss to Grayson (Loganville, Georgia) in the Georgia High School Playoffs.

Buford, No. 16 in the nation in this week’s USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 rankings, finished the season 11-2. Their five-game winning streak is snapped with the loss.

It was certainly a strong season for Raiola, despite the playoff loss. And he showed flashes of his enormous potential in Friday’s game against Grayson.

A half-second before getting hit, Raiola delivers this nice 20-yard pass that was perfectly dropped into his downfield target. He committed to Georgia in mid-May and it is easy to see why he was a nationally coveted recruit.

This one throw in particular showcases the kind of calmness and poise he will need in the SEC.

This throw, already a difficult one, is made even more challenging given the pressure he was facing in the pocket.

According to 247Sports, he is the top quarterback recruit in the nation and the second-best recruit in the 2024 class.

Through the first 12 games of the season, Raiola completed 147-of-236 for 2,533 yards with 34 touchdowns and an interception.

USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 football rankings as of Nov. 21, 2023

Mater Dei and St. John Bosco create a shift in the latest rankings.

The CIF Southern Section semifinals created the expected shake-up in the latest USA TODAY HSS Super 25, with Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) dropping out of the rankings and—though a close call—Centennial (Corona, Calif.) following to land just outside the current hierarchy.

That movement opened the door for two new teams this week, while others moved up the ladder after solid and very convincing performances last weekend.

The methodology: the HSS staff creates the Super 25 rankings while considering various data points, including strength of schedule, prospects, the more traditional stats—did the team win or lose?—as well as overall point differentials.

This might be the best throw Dylan Raiola has made all season (and it wasn’t even a touchdown)

Dylan Raiola made an impressive, clutch throw on Friday night for Buford.

Dylan Raiola continues to prove that he is the real deal, as the five-star quarterback and Georgia commit makes impressive throws.

But his most impressive throw, perhaps of the season, came on a rather mundane play for Buford (Buford, Georgia) on Friday night in the playoffs. The highlights of Raiola’s long throws or squeezing in a touchdown pass into tight coverage always get buzz on social media.

But on Friday night in a 28-25 win over Norcross (Norcross, Georgia), Raiola made the kind of throw that he will need to make in the SEC. On third down and with 2:01 left in the game, Raiola faced a blitz and nearly was sacked, Instead of panicking, he stood tall and delivered what was really a tremendous throw.

It was a savvy throw that actually projects well for his future in the SEC with Georgia.

What’s impressive about this throw from Raiola is that he delivered the ball accurately in the face of such pressure. That he did so in a clutch moment to seal the game for Buford only adds to the moment.

The blitzer went right through the A-Gap untouched and Raiola delivered this pass with the pressure not just in his face and bearing down but also hitting him. And yet Raiola still delivered a perfect throw for a first down to essentially end the game for Buford.

It is easy to be impressed with the throws that show his arm strength or his accuracy. But being able to hang in the pocket and produce a first down throw late in a tight game? That’s pretty clutch.

Raiola is ranked the No. 2 player in the nation by 247Sports.

USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 football rankings as of Nov. 14, 2023

No upsets or major movement as playoff football presses on to the middle of November.

The top two teams in the country were idle this past week, along with No.4 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) and No. 17 Liberty (Peoria, Ariz.). Meanwhile, the Super 25 teams in action handled the competition with relative ease, holding ground in the latest rankings.

The methodology: the HSS staff creates the Super 25 rankings while considering various data points, including strength of schedule, prospects, the more traditional stats—did the team win or lose?—as well as overall point differentials.
