However, last week’s action has already created a shift among the best of the best.

The 2023 Super 25 champ and current No. 3 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) took out then-No. 25 Kahuku (Hawaii) 33-7, while No. 10 Milton (Ga.) overcame a tough test against then-No. 21 Buford (Ga.), 13-10.

From the Sunshine State, a preseason shocker created a small amount of buzz, with nationally ranked American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) losing to Blanche Ely (Pompano Beach, Fla.) 50-7.

Sign of things to come?

USA TODAY Sports Super 25 football score recap, Aug. 19, 2024

High school football scores from around the Super 25 as action moves to the week of Aug. 19, 2024.

High school football is still in Week 0—or awaiting opening kickoffs—in some places around the country, yet we’ve already had some big-time results that will shift the next USA TODAY Sports Super 25 rankings.

Last year’s Super 25 champ and current No. 3 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) dispelled any concerns about losing key offense pieces, handling No. 25 Kahuku (Hawaii) 33-7.

Raul Lara is in as the new head coach at Mater Dei football

Raul Lara is the new head coach at Mater Dei.

One of the top football coaches in California is on his way to one of the nation’s premier prep coaching job. On Thursday, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, California) announced the hiring of Raul Lara as their next head football coach.

Lara is an accomplished head coach in California, who is perhaps best known for his 13 years spent at Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, California) where he won five Southern Section championships while compiling a record of 142-30.

Last fall, Mater Dei finished third in the nation in the final USA TODAY Sports Super 25. Mater Dei went 13-1 under head coach Frank McManus.

The school has produced three winners of the Heisman Trophy.

There is a connection to Mater Dei for Lara through the school’s president, Michael Brennan. As noted by the Ocean County Register, beginning in 2014, Lara spent five years as head coach at St. Anthony (Long Beach, California) where Brennan was then the president.

USA TODAY High School Sports All-Super 25 selections for 2023 season

The standout athletes on offense and defense for each team in the final Super 25.

The high school football season came to an end in December 2023, with Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) taking the national champion nod atop the USA TODAY Sports Super 25.

Overall, it was one of the tightest races to the championship crown in recent Super 25 history, with a handful of top-tier teams making a case for supremacy. And throughout the action, standout athletes headlined the season that was packed with upsets, close calls, and statement wins.

As the High School Sports staff closes another chapter on the storied franchise that began in 1982, we’re looking back at the final 25 and highlighting two players—one on offense and one on defense—who stood out this season.

Here are the All-Super 25 selections…

Final 2023 USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 football rankings: Bishop Gorman adds 4th national champ title

The final Super 25 showcases one of the closest races in recent years.

For the first time since 2016, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) stands atop the Super 25 rankings, marking the program’s fourth title.

Like last year, it was a close race down the stretch, with Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Calif.), Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and DeSoto (Texas) making a case for consideration.

To that, the teams that just missed the top 25 were probably the most reviewed in recent years, with five shining above the rest.

But after much conversation and consideration, the 25 teams below earned a spot in the final 2023 rundown.

As we close another chapter of the USA TODAY Sports Super 25 football rankings, we congratulate all the teams that appeared this season. That’s an incredible achievement when considering the massive scope of high school football.

The methodology: the HSS staff creates the Super 25 rankings while considering various data points, including strength of schedule, prospects, the more traditional stats—did the team win or lose?—as well as overall point differentials.

USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 football recap: No. 5 DeSoto sets a points record, Duncanville tops North Shore in Texas battle

Expect more shakeups in next week’s final Super 25.

No. 10 Duncanville handed No. 6 North Shore its first loss of the year while securing the Texas 6A Div. 1 state title. It’s just one more headline-hitting outcome this week, which began with a fantastic finish in the Georgia 7A State Championship, where No. 22 Milton took out No. 12 Walton.

To close out the Super 25 schedule, No. 5 DeSoto (Texas) made it clear that it is a top 5 team, setting a record for points scored in a 6A state championship game.

All of it will undoubtedly have a new look when the final rankings are released.

The 2023 high school football hierarchy holds firm with only one week before the final Super 25.

No. 3 Mater Dei dominates in CIF championship game over No. 17 Serra

Mater Dei put together an impressive win on Saturday.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) put forward a convincing performance to be the top team in the nation, following a comprehensive win on Saturday night in the CIF State Open Division championship game.

In last week’s USA TODAY HSS Super 25, Mater Dei was ranked third in the nation. Their opponent on Saturday was No. 17 Serra (San Mateo, Calif.).

And Mater Dei simply rolled over Serra with a 35-0 win. Quarterback Elijah Brown, a Stanford football commit, threw for four touchdowns.

It was the most impressive win of the weekend for any of the nationally ranked teams. But the argument could certainly be made that Mater Dei’s win, considering the quality of the opponent, might be the most thorough and complete win in any championship game in the country this fall.

Could Mater Dei be the top team in the nation when it is all said and done? That would be a difficult mountain to climb. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) hasn’t faltered all season and Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Florida) seemed to get better every week.

Mater Dei, at 13-1, has an interesting argument to make now following Saturday’s win. Few thought they would be as dominant as they were against a team as good as Serra.

A top finish in the Super 25 would break a tie for most all-time, which the Monarchs currently share with perennial power De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)

USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 football recap: Norland goes down in epic Florida upset, DeSoto and North Shore hang on, plus more

Mater Dei and Chaminade-Madonna continue to make a case for No. 1, while Norland gets upset in a Florida battle.

The Lone Star State showdowns between Super 25 teams headlined the weekend action, with No. 7 North Shore (Houston, Texas) holding off No. 15 Westlake (Austin, Texas), while No. 5 DeSoto (Texas) topped No. 25 Southlake Carroll (Texas) in a one-score game.

Berkeley Prep (Fla.) was the team creating some of the most significant buzz, though, after taking out No. 8 Norland (Fla.).

With No. 3 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) capping off the evening with a state title over No. 18 Serra (San Mateo, Calif.), the Super 25 scoreboard is now final.

Is Jeremiah Smith ready to (tomahawk) chop Ohio State?

Jeremiah Smith could be trending towards a recruiting flip.

Five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is sure making waves like a change in his recruitment could be coming. The Ohio State verbal is set for an official visit this weekend to Florida State.

This visit will be a week after Smith wore Florida State gloves during his final high school game, a 56-0 win by Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Florida),  over Clearwater Central Catholic (Clearwater, Florida) in the state playoffs. Chaminade-Madonna finished the season ranked second-overall in the USA TODAY HSS Super 25.

On the season, Smith had 77 catches for 1,206 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.

He is a consensus top-five recruit in the nation. Smith has been committed to Ohio State for nearly a year, having given his verbal on Dec. 14.

Smith was recently named the No. 1 player in the nation by Rivals.

Now, going on an official visit to Florida State is not good news for Smith’s commitment to Ohio State. Nor is wearing Florida State gloves during his playoff game.

A post shared by 247Sports (@247sports)

There is a reason why Smith is at the center of such an intense recruiting battle. He not only has been productive at the college level but his physical tools are very impressive.

A 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, Smith has great size and length. He is a physical wide receiver who catches the ball at its highest point and is elusive when in the open field.

He has long been considered a possible flip to Florida State, but that talk has intensified over the past three months.
