Old Dominion vs FIU Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are overcoming issues with enough takeaways to get by.

The defense has been good enough to keep the team in games – there was close loss after close loss before finally getting over the hump with a win over Louisiana Tech.

The run defense has been outstanding, and it should be able to stuff FIU to a dead stop. The Golden Panther offense has failed to hit 300 yards in each of the last two games as the season keeps getting worse.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why FIU Will Win

FIU has to overcome its problems with lots and lots of takeaways.

Old Dominion has turned the ball over two or more times in five straight games and has yet to win the turnover margin. There’s a whole lot going right as the team is starting to play better, but it all goes away if it makes a slew of mistakes.

FIU doesn’t generate turnovers with just four takeaways, but the defense can get behind the line and there are just enough stops against the mediocre attacks to potentially be okay.

The passing game will push the ball down the field, Old Dominion has no downfield attack, and the hope has to be for the O to be more explosive.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can Old Dominion make it two in a row? It’s playing a team its own size without the defensive toughness to hold up. More importantly in this, FIU doesn’t take the ball away enough to matter.

It’ll be close, it’ll be entertaining, and it’ll come down to Old Dominion being better than third downs and in the final moments.

FIU vs Marshall Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

The passing game continues to be fun.

The wins aren’t there, and the defense is letting the team down, but the Golden Panthers have the ability to keep up and bomb away against just about anyone with one of the best downfield passing attacks in college football.

FIU will throw for over 300 yards, and then it comes down to whether or not Marshall goes Marshall and turns the ball over enough to matter. The Thundering Herd have given it up multiple times in every game but one with ten giveaways over the last three games. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Marshall Will Win

This FIU team just doesn’t do a thing on defense.

It might throw for a ton of yards, but it gives them up just as fast, allowing 382 passing yards or more in four of the last five games.

It’s the second-worst pass defense in the country, there’s no ball control with the O struggling in the time of possession battle, and when it comes to those pesky Thundering Herd giveaways, the FIU D has only come up with four turnovers.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall has to do everything possible to not turn the ball over four times. It can get away with its normal two, but the only way FIU pulls this off is if there’s a total meltdown like the Herd’s loss to Middle Tennessee.

Expect over 600 passing yards between the two teams and a lot of offensive fun, but Marshall will come up with a few stops, and FIU won’t.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

WKU vs FIU Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

The passing game will be amazing.

QB Bailey Zappe and the Hilltoppers attack won’t have any problem ripping through a shockingly awful FIU secondary that allowed an average of over 400 yards per game over a three-game stretch before allowing 199 yards against Charlotte.

Third in the nation in total offense, the Hilltoppers are exploding or over 500 yards on a consistent basis, and they should let it rip without any worry against a D that’s dead last in the nation in turnovers forced.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why FIU Will Win

FIU can wing it around, too.

There might not be a whole lot of success overall, but former Maryland QB Max Bortenschlager has been fantastic with 14 touchdown passes – two or more in every game – five picks, and he’s coming off a 466-yard day against Charlotte.

WKU has several outstanding parts on defense, but it’s having a tough time holding up. It’s allowing close to 500 yards per game with a secondary that’s allowing 327 yards or more in each of the last four games.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is going to be fun.

Both teams are going to throw and throw some more, but WKU does it better.  The pass rush, though, hasn’t shown up this season like it was supposed to, but it will this week against a Golden Panther O line that’s having problems.

The Hilltoppers lines will be stronger.

Charlotte vs FIU Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

The 49ers are fantastic at controlling games.

They’ve got a nice running game – even if it’s not consistent – and Chris Reynolds and the passing attack have done well enough to come up with wins over Duke and Middle Tennessee, but it’s all about one key thing with this team.

Time of possession.

The 49ers don’t beat themselves with bad penalties and a ton of turnovers, and they’re okay on third downs. What they’re great at is keeping the ball, holding on to it for over 33 minutes a game.

FIU has a slew of issues, and one of the biggest is ball control. It keeps it for just over 26 minutes a game.

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why FIU Will Win

The passing game has perked up.

It was fine over the first part of the season, and despite the losses over the last two weeks on the road, the offense cranked up close to 400 yards through the air against Central Michigan and 319 in last week’s loss to Florida Atlantic.

Former Maryland starter Max Bortenschlager has settled in, and the 1-2 receiving punch of Tyrese Chambers and Bryce Singleton are making big play after big play.

Charlotte doesn’t allow a ton of shots down the field, but it doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush to be a problem.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

FIU is having too many defensive issues.

Charlotte is hardly a brick wall on D, but at least the group takes the ball away and is fully rested late with all the time the O spends controlling the clock.

Charlotte’s problem is stopping the run, and FIU doesn’t do that.

FIU will be tough at home for the first time since September 11th, but Charlotte will be too consistent for a full four quarters.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Florida Atlantic vs FIU Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

FIU has lost a few tough games, and the defense might be having some problems, but the offense is starting to play well enough to keep up against almost anyone in Conference USA.

The downfield passing game is great – Max Bortenschlager is averaging close to ten yards per throw – and Florida Atlantic doesn’t have the pass rush to be a bother.

Florida Atlantic has been too inconsistent over the first four games offensively – at least on the ground – and the Golden Panthers have had a few decent moments defensively early in the season, but …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Golden Panthers have been lit up over the last two weeks. Not being able to stop Texas Tech is one thing, but Central Michigan also pushed for 400 yards through the air to go along with over 200 on the ground.

Yeah, the FIU passing game makes things happen down the field, but FAU’s secondary – despite the lack of pressure from the front line – has been great when the ball is in the air.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

FIU isn’t taking advantage of the opportunities in the red zone, and it can’t afford to miss any shots in this.

The real problem is the lack of a consistent running game to take advantage of the struggling Owl defensive front. To be fair, FAU has faced a slew of amazing ground games, but this week it gets a break.

This is always a weird rivalry game that seems to defy expectations, but the Owls should be in control of this after the first quarter.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

FIU vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

There are just enough good parts to make this a bit of a fight.

The offensive line has ben solid, the running game has shown a little burst, and the passing attack is averaging close to nine yards per throw. The potential is there for a breakout performance against a Central Michigan secondary that got lit up but both Missouri and LSU.

The Chippewas offensive line hasn’t been consistent and the defensive front doesn’t have any real pass rush. However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Former Washington QB Jacob Sirmon has been okay. He hasn’t turned it loose deep on a regular basis, but he hit close to 75% of his passes over the last two games and he’s not making a whole slew of mistakes.

It’s part of a puzzle.

Central Michigan doesn’t take a whole lot of chances – it has a formula.

Control the ball, go with the short-range plays, try not to mess up, dominate the clock. CMU holds the ball for close to 34 minutes per game, and FIU is keeping it for just 26.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Neither team has a win over an FBS team, but FIU is losing to Texas Tech and Texas State and Central Michigan is losing at LSU and Missouri.

Again, FIU has a few good parts with the talent to win plays and keep this from getting ugly, but Central Michigan is way too sound on both sides of the ball.

The Chippewa D gets a break this week.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Texas Tech (2-0) vs FIU (1-1) Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

You can throw on Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders slept through a 28-22 win over Stephen F. Austin as Lumberjack QB Trae Self threw for 343 yards and made it a fight until the end.

Texas Tech has too much experience on defense to be this mediocre, and the offense wasn’t nearly as sharp as it should’ve been – Oregon transfer QB Tyler Shough struggled – and FIU has to take advantage of both things.

The pass rush has been great so far – it has to at least make Shough rush – and Maryland transfer Max Bortenschlager has been solid, throwing for 259 yards and two scores last week, and …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Yeah, FIU lost to Texas State.

The Golden Panthers have more of an offense than it did last season, and the secondary has playmakers, but get up fast on this group and it might be over.

Chalk up last week against SFA as a weirdly unfocused scrimmage. Shough was great in the opener against Houston, the defense has been great at generating tackles for loss and ending drives with a big play, and the run D should stuff FIU to a dead stop.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

After last week’s weird performance, Texas Tech has to get the machine going.

It’ll win, and this will mostly be about trying to tighten everything up, but the team has three road games in four weeks right after this starting with a date at Texas.

FIU is an almost perfect team to play in the third game. It’s going to bring enough pass rush to throw something big at the Red Raider O, and it’s going to turn the ball over enough to spoil any hope at an upset.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

FIU (0-0) vs LIU (0-0) Game Preview

Why LIU Will Win

The Sharks had a fun spring run, going 2-2 with a thrilling opening win over Bryant and closed out with a good performance in a win over Merrimack.

This might be a program just getting rolling – relatively speaking – but the defense was good at taking the ball away, the offense was perfectly balanced – 516 yards rushing in four games, 516 yards passing – and the pass rush isn’t bad.

The FIU offense still has to prove it can do something with a passing game that was a total disaster in the shortened 2020 season. There wasn’t anything happening down the field partially do to an O line that didn’t do a thing in pass protection.

Why FIU Will Win

The Golden Panther defense should make up for the concerns on the offensive side.

This isn’t going to be a high-octane offense quite yet, but it should be able to move the chains. For all of the positives on the LIU defense over its four games, it had a hard time getting off the field. As long as FIU can be very, very careful with the ball – the Sharks are strong at coming up with picks – and if it can just keep the offense moving, it should be in control of the game thanks to the D.

The Golden Panthers have a decent front four and what should be one of Conference USA’s most talented secondaries.

What’s Going To Happen

LIU will be feisty. It’ll keep this from getting out of hand with a few takeaways, but the FIU defense will hold firm in the second half and the offense will do just enough to be comfortable.

It’ll take a little bit to get there, but the Golden Panthers will get their first win since mid-November of 2019.

1. Marshall Thundering Herd

Quick Take: It’s one of the most interesting Group of Five teams coming into the 2021 season – it’s Conference USA title or bust. New head man Charles Huff has to pull the Herd offense out of the nosedive that screwed up 2020, and he’s got the parts in place to do it – especially for the passing game. If the D isn’t the best in the conference, it’s second.

2. WKU Hilltoppers

Quick Take: The Hilltoppers will be deep in the hunt for the Conference USA title – at the very least, they’ll be among the top three teams. 5. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Quick Take: The Blue Raiders will be in for a weird season. The team isn’t all that great, but it should push for a bowl game with a whole lot of winnable games built into the slate. The secondary is good thanks to the best group of safeties in the league, but can the offense keep up the pace?

6. Charlotte 49ers

7. Old Dominion Monarchs

Quick Take: Welcome back, ODU football. After taking last year off, and with head coach Ricky Rahne having to wait a season to get his era going, this is Conference USA’s biggest wild-card team. What’s going to work right away? The offense should get going early on.
