Fantasy football injury report: Week 14

Latest status of fantasy football weapons who are on the mend entering Week 14.

This is a team-by-team review of any key fantasy football player injury news after this week’s practice activity and team statements. Only those players listed on the team’s official injury report will be addressed, unless the situation warrants further attention.

PLEASE NOTE: The NFL releases their final official injury report late on Friday (after 5:00 p.m. ET). Teams on the West Coast often report their injuries late and may not be included in the initial publication.

This week’s key game-time decisions: WR Mike Williams, RB Mark Ingram, RB Joe Mixon, RB Melvin Gordon, WR Brandin Cooks, WR Kenny Golladay, WR Sterling Shepard, WR Deebo Samuel, RB J.D. McKissic, WR Curtis Samuel

RB Miles Sanders – Ankle
RB Kenyan Drake – Broken ankle
RB Patrick Laird – Knee
RB Ronald Jones – Illness
WR Adam Thielen – Ankle
WR Corey Davis – Ankle
TE Logan Thomas – ACL
TE Ryan Griffin – Ankle

Chasing Ambulances

QB Tyrod Taylor (HOU) – Was examined for a wrist injury prior to Davis Mills taking over, but Taylor was so bad that the Texans will evaluate which quarterback they want to use going forward.  The next opponents are the Seahawks and Jaguars, so there could be some fantasy value here in 2-QB leagues.

QB Mike Glennon (NYG) – He was replacing Daniel Jones, who was inactive with a neck injury. If Glennon cannot clear the concussion protocol, the Giants would have to turn to Jake Fromm against the Chargers this week. It just gets worse for the Giants.

RB Elijah Mitchell (SF) – Was hit hard and bent backward. That sent him to the medical tent to be evaluated for a concussion but he was cleared and returned.

RB Miles Sanders (PHI) – Injured his ankle in the fourth quarter of the win over the Jets. Sanders goes onto his bye this week, so information may be hard to get until they are required to report for Week 15.  With Jordan Howard out, Sanders was having his best game of the season.

RB Kenyan Drake (LV) – Reported to have suffered a broken ankle in the loss to Washington and will be lost for the season. Peyton Barber is the first choice to replace Drake. Josh Jacobs is already banged up but playing through his injuries. If he were to miss time, Barber would move up to be the starter, assuming the Raiders didn’t sign someone else off the street.

TE Logan Thomas (WAS) – Believed to have torn his ACL and MCL after being hit low by the Raiders DE Yannick Ngakoue. That dings the passing attack and should see the team turn back to Ricky Seals-Jones who has been out for three games with a hip injury but expected to return.  Washington plays the Cowboys this week and need a receiving tight end.

WR Adam Thielen (MIN) – Suffered a high-ankle sprain in the loss to the Lions and will undergo tests on Monday for an idea of how much time he will miss. Most high ankle sprains last for a month or more, which could mean that he’s realistically lost for the rest of the fantasy season. His prognosis will indicate if that is the case. If he is gone as seems likely, then the Vikings would move up K.J. Osborn to the No. 2 wideout.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

WR Russell Gage (ATL) –  Led the Falcons with 11 catches for 130 yards in the loss to the Buccaneers. It was the only 100-yard performance by a Falcons’ wide receiver this year.

QB Kyler Murray, WR DeAndre Hopkins (ARI) –  Both were out since Week 8 and returned to face the Bears on Chicago on a cold, rainy and windy day. Good to see Murray complete 11-of-15 for 123 yards and two touchdowns, plus ran for 59 yards and two scores on ten rushes. Hopkins returned to post two catches for 23 yards and a touchdown to start the game. The duo is healthy for the stretch run while trying to hold onto the No. 1 seed.

WR Jalen Guyton (LAC) – The rookie Josh Palmer has been the No. 3 wideout this year, but he’s been held below 25 yards in every game. The Chargers turned to Guyton against the Bengals and he turned in his best performance of the season with four catches for 90 yards and his first touchdown of the year. He wasn’t limited to just the fourth quarter. His 44-yard touchdown came in the second quarter even though Palmer was the listed starter who had no catches.

TE Tyler Conklin, WR K.J. Osborn (MIN) – The first time they played the Lions, Conklin only caught two passes for 25 yards and Osborn finished with three receptions for 14 yards. In the second meeting, Conklin’s seven catches for 56 yards were second to only Justin Jefferson and Osborn scored on his four catches for 47 yards. With Adam Thielen out with a high-ankle sprain for a yet undetermined amount of time, Cousin has to decide where to go in the rare case that Justin Jefferson is covered. Osborn is an obvious “next man up,” but Conklin may also see a consistent uptick.

WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (DET) – The talented rookie hasn’t had a breakout performance stuck on the sluggish Lions’ offense, but he came up big in Week 13’s win over the Vikings with ten catches for 86 yards and his first NFL touchdown which happened on the final play to get the Lions that ever-elusive first win on the year.

Houston Texans – Two meetings with the Colts this year and they lost them 31-0 and 31-3. Tyrod Taylor injured his wrist and was replaced/benched for Davis Mills with similar humbling results.  Brandin Cooks (3-38) was the top receiver and the Texans aren’t even good enough to get cheap catches and yards at the end of a blowout.

WR DeVante Parker (MIA) – Was on injured reserve with a hamstring injury from Week 8 but was activated onto the roster on Saturday. Albert Wilson was the starter along with Jaylen Waddle. Wilson fielded eight targets to catch four for 26 yards while “substitute” Parker caught all five of his passes for 62 yards. Parker’s back and contributing for however long he lasts before the next injury.

QB Gardner Minshew (PHI) – Jalen Hurts was inactive and Minshew drew the start. He looked sharp completing 20-of-25 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. Dallas Goedert (6-105, 2 TD) enjoyed a career-high in yardage and his first double-score performance. DeVonta Smith (2-15) disappeared, but Minshew ended with a 133.7 QB rating. Not only did Hurts only post a 17.5 QB rating last week, but he never had as high as a 133.7 QB rating in any of his 16 career starts. The Eagles are on bye this week, and they have to make a decision.

RB Sony Michel (LAR) – Game-time decision Darrell Henderson was inactive for the win over the Jaguars, but Sony Michel made the most of the opportunity rushing for 121 yards and a score on 24 carries and even caught three passes for eight yards. Michel’s touchdown was in the first quarter to lead off the scoring.

Seahawks backfield – Now that they given up on Alex Collins, the Seahawks have opted for the popular three-headed monster approach. Travis Homer (3-80, TD) opened the scoring with a 73-yard touchdown but only was given two more carries. Rashaad Penny (10-35) and Adrian Peterson (11-16, TD) split the rest of the carries which ensures none of them will be reliable enough for a fantasy start – assuming that Homer doesn’t have any more 73-yard scores left in him.

RB Javonte Williams (DEN) – The rookie may have given a taste of 2022 when he faced the Chiefs in Kansas City with Melvin Gordon on the sideline. Williams rushed for 102 yards on 23 carries and caught six passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.  Mike Boone turned in five runs and a catch, but Williams was the bright spot in the loss.

Huddle player of the week

TE George Kittle  –  His fantasy owners hurt for the first half of the season, but he’s picked up the pace sharply in the last five games and posted a fantasy-best 39.6 fantasy points with nine catches for 181 yards and two scores in the loss to the Seahawks. He even ran for five yards. Maybe he was AWOL for the first eight weeks, but he’s roared back with a vengeance.

Salute!

Chasing Ambulances

Light week but some big names.

QB Teddy Bridgewater (DEN) – Injured his lower leg when he was sacked but was X-rayed and returned to the game despite his leg swelling. The Broncos preferred an injured Bridgewater to a healthy Drew Lock. An MRI will look at the leg on Monday, but he played with the injury in the second half.

RB Christian McCaffrey (CAR) – Injured his ankle in the second half and did not return. He left the stadium wearing a walking boot. He tried playing through the injury but was yanked from the game. McCaffrey rolled his ankle and  will have it looked at more on Monday.  Chuba Hubbard would replace him if the injury was serious, but the Panthers head onto their bye, so there are two weeks for McCaffrey to heal.

RB Trey Sermon (SF) – Left in the second quarter with an undescribed right leg injury and was ruled out for the rest of the game.  He was carted to the locker room, so the injury was more than a “ding.” Sermon is a No. 3 running back at best, so there’s no waiver wire additions involved regardless of his test result.

RB Dalvin Cook (MIN) – After a rough tackle, Cook writhed on the ground in pain and was later carted off the field. He’s been reported to suffer a dislocation in his shoulder and there will be tests to determine how much damage there was. The Vikings play at the Lions this week and Alexander Mattison will be a coveted starter if Cook remains out.

WR Deebo Samuel (SF) – Was hit in the third quarter and was slow to get up. He spent time in the medical tent and did not return to the game with a groin injury. Samuel will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the damage.

TE Dan Arnold (JAC) – Made a nine-yard catch in the second quarter  but was slow to get up. He injured his knee and did not return to the game. There is hope that the injury is not severe, but he will be tested on Monday.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

RB Austin Walter (NYJ) –  The Rice University product was undrafted in 2019 and signed as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers, got waived, joined the Giants, got waived, then to the XFL, and finally back to the 49ers, and then he was added to the Jets last May. Once there, he landed on injured reserve, was released, then joined the Jets’ practice squad in October. When Michael Carter was placed on injured reserve, they called up Walter from the practice squad on Saturday and suddenly he was playing in Houston where he went to high school and college.

Tevin Coleman (16-67) and Ty Johnson (6-42) were a bit more productive, but Walter (9-38, TD) joined the growing list of practice squad running backs that get called up and surprise in their first game. The Jets host the Eagles, so there’s a chance of another productive performance though without Carter, the committee approach is back in full use.

QB Cam Newton (CAR) – His first start produced three touchdowns and moderate yardage. His second was a disaster, despite facing the No. 28 defense versus quarterbacks. Newton only completed 5-of-21 passes for 92 yards and two interceptions before getting the hook in the second half. He had a QB rating of 5.8 but he completed a 64-yard pass to DJ Moore to start the game. The Panthers are going on their bye this week, and head coach Matt Rhule already said Newton remains the starter for Week 14 versus Atlanta. But Rhule will have two weeks to think about it.

WR Jaylen Waddle (MIA) – Finally turned in his first 100-yard performance when he posted nine catches for 137 yards and a touchdown on the Panthers. He’s already become solid with at least 60 yards each week, and now scored in two straight games.

WR Deebo Samuel (SF) – Left the win over the Vikings with a groin injury but ran for 66 yards and two scores on six rushes and caught a 12-yard pass before leaving. That made Samuel the first wide receiver in NFL history to record 1,000 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns and five rushing touchdowns in a season. He is also the first wide receiver to have scored five rushing touchdowns in a season since the Super Bowl era started in 1966.

RB Dontrell Hilliard (TEN) – Speaking of ex-practice squadders, Hilliard was a surprise in Week 11 when he ran for 35 yards and caught eight passes for 47 yards replacing Jeremy McNichols. On Sunday in a painful beatdown by the Patriots, Hilliard was the lone bright spot with  12 carries for 131 yards that included a 68-yard touchdown run and one short reception. The Titans head onto their bye, but Hilliard’s earned the right to remain on the active roster and contribute.

RB Kareem Hunt (CLE) – After missing five weeks with a sprained knee, Hunt returned to face the Ravens and flopped. He only gained 20 yards on seven rushes and failed to catch his only pass target.  Nick Chubb was held to a season-worst 16 yards on eight runs, so it wasn’t just Hunt. And he goes onto his bye only to face the Ravens yet again in Week 14.

RB Matt Breida (BUF) – Zack Moss was a healthy scratch on Thanksgiving, and Breida (9-26) shared the backfield with Devin Singletary (15-44).  Breida also added two receptions for 29 yards and scored for the second time in the last three games. His role as a receiver will be a bigger asset this week against the Patriots.

TE Cole Kmet (CHI) – Reeled in six catches for 67 yards in Week 9 and then only managed one catch in Week 10. But the second-year tight end played in Detroit and set a career-best eight receptions for 65 yards. He scored twice as a rookie but none so far this year, but Kmet is becoming a reliable outlet for both Andy Dalton and Justin Fields.

TE Dawson Knox (BUF) – Was a top tight end with five scores through Week 5 but fractured his hand in Week 6 and went on injured reserve. He returned in Week 10 with just one catch but then stepped up to six receptions for 80 yards versus the Colts in Week 11. On Sunday, he only caught three passes for 32 yards but found the end zone twice.

Huddle player of the week

RB Leonard Fournette  (JAC) –  Quite a journey for Fournette who was a 1.04 pick in 2017, a star in Jacksonville until he wasn’t, a Super Bowl and now this. His career-best performance had 17 rushes for 100 yards and three touchdowns in the win over the Colts, and he added seven receptions for 31 yards and a fourth touchdown. That was around 44 points in most leagues and plenty to get that Week 12 win.

Salute!

Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

QB Justin Fields – Ribs
RB Michael Carter – Ankle
RB Jordan Howard – Knee
RB Jerick McKinnon – Hamstring
RB Najee Harris – Head
WR Jamal Agnew – Hip
WR Jarvis Landry – Knee
WR A.J. Brown – Chest
WR CeeDee Lamb – Head

Chasing Ambulances

QB Justin Fields (CHI) – Left the game with what was called a rib injury, but there is concern that Fields may have injured his spleen as well. Head coach Matt Nagy had no update  after the game. Initial tests did not reveal any broken ribs but he’ll undergo further tests on Monday. Should he miss any time, Andy Dalton will be the starter this week in Detroit for a very advantageous situation.

RB Michael Carter (NYJ) – Injured his ankle and did not return to the loss to the Dolphins. Carter’s a central figure in the offense and emerged as the primary rusher. He’ll undergo more tests on Monday, but if he misses time, the Jets will add La’Mical Perrine to the rotation of Ty Johnson and Tevin Coleman. None of those three backs will likely offer much fantasy value even if Carter misses this week in Houston.

RB Jordan Howard (PHI) – Suffered a knee injury that knocked him out of the win over the Saints. His status will be determined Monday, but Miles Sanders had a big performance in his first game back, and the Eagles already add in  Boston Scott as well.  Howard was already due to a decrease in workload anyway.

RB Najee Harris (PIT) – A hard hit to his helmet rocked the rookie head back and he left the game with a suspected concussion. He returned later after being cleared by doctors.

WR Jamal Agnew (JAC) – The Jaguars’ wideout had his leg trapped awkwardly beneath him and suffered a gruesome-looking twisting of his leg that is described as a hip injury. Head coach Urban Meyer described the injury as “devastating,” and there is speculation that he’s lost for the season. He’ll be tested further on Monday but good results are not expected.  Tavon Austin is his backup, but Agnew was the rising star of the receivers. His slot role could be cobbled together from several other receivers.

WR Jarvis Landry (CLE) – Left the win over the Lions with a knee injury  but re-entered the game with minimal impact. He was held to only four catches for 26 yards and the Browns were already without Donovan Peoples-Jones. Barring surprising news, Landry appears to have missed any serious injury.

WR CeeDee Lamb (DAL) – Suffered a concussion in the loss to the Chiefs and did not return. This injury could be a problem since the Cowboys play again in four days on Thanksgiving. Cedrick Wilson would likely see an increase but Amari Cooper was also out and Dalton Schultz and Michael Gallup were the  leading receivers.

WR A.J. Brown (TEN) – He left the game with a hand injury and was listed as questionable to return. But he did return and then left for a second time with a chest injury. He ended with just one catch, and for the second non-Henry game, he was a nonfactor when he played. Julio Jones was out as well, and Brown gets intense coverage. His status will be clear later in the week, but the Titans play at the Patriots this week and Brown already has a tough matchup even if he is healthy.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

Patriots Backfield – While it seems to be constant change, the Week 11 rotation in the win over the Falcons is probably what most weeks will see. Damien Harris was the primary rusher and ended with ten carries for 56 yards, while Rhamondre Stevenson gained 69 yards on 12 carries and had a larger role in the second half of the already decided game.  Stevenson also had a 36-yard run called back on a penalty. Brandon Bolden is the odd man out, with only one carry for one yard and two receptions for 15 yards. Both Harris and Stevenson also had a catch.

RB Qadree Ollison (ATL) –  The Falcons depth player was a surprise lead back in the loss to the Patriots and it probably means little. Cordarrelle Patterson missed the game, and  Wayne Gallman ran for 55 yards on 15 carries in Week 10 but was only allowed one rush last Thursday night.  Ollison ran a team-high nine times for 34 yards, and Keith Smith was given a season-high three carries. The takeaway is that Mike Davis is done, there’s no rhyme or reason for the rotation outside of Patterson who carries the only fantasy value in the backfield.

QB Cam Newton (CAR) – His re-debut as a Panther didn’t get the win, but he already looked like an upgrade to Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker.  Christian McCaffrey may lose rushing scores to him, but still totaled 119 yards and a score in his first game with Newton.  He passed for 189 yards and two scores that included one to DJ Moore (5-50, TD) and he even connected with Robby Anderson (5-30) for a season-high five receptions.  Newton ran for 46 yards with a 24-yard touchdown as a rusher.

RB Latavius Murray (BAL) – Saw his first action since Week 6 and only gained 32 yards on ten carries while Devonta Freeman (16-49, TD) remained the primary back and even added six catches for 31 yards.  Murray had been the No. 1 rusher before injury, but the Ravens appear comfortable with Freeman as the main guy.

QB Andy Dalton (CHI) – Sure, they lost and HC Matt Nagy’s hot seat just was turned up to 11. But Dalton came into the loss to the Ravens midway in the third quarter and nearly pulled off a comeback when he threw for 201 yards and two scores.  Darnell Mooney (5-121, TD) and Marquise Goodwin (4-104, TD) both turned in their best production of the year. In just one and a half quarters with Dalton. If Justin Fields remains out, the Bears play in Detroit on Thanksgiving.

QB Tim Boyle (DET) – Replaced Jared Goff in the loss to the Browns and threw for a whopping 77 yards and two interceptions. So, maybe Jared Goff will be back.

49ers backfield – With Elijah Mitchell out, the 49ers went with Jeff Wilson (19-50) and Trey Sermon (10-32) in the blowout win over the Jaguars. Of course, Deebo Samuel (8-79, TD) was the most productive rusher even if he only caught one pass.

WR Elijah Moore (NYJ) – The rookie never caught a touchdown from Zach Wilson, but he’s scored four times in the four games since he left. After spinning through Josh Johnson and Mike White as starting quarterbacks, the first game with Joe Flacco produced a season-best eight catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. The seventh wideout drafted this year, Moore looks like a star just waiting for a good quarterback that can last more than one week.

RB Mark Ingram (NO) – The Saints fell to the Eagles, but Ingram looked sharp when he replaced Alvin Kamara and ran for 88 yards on 16 rushes, and added six catches for 25 yards.

RB Miles Sanders (PHI) – His first game back since leaving in Week 7, and Sanders ran for 94 yards on 16 carries. Jordan Howard (10-63) was also involved but left injured, and Boston Scott (6-16) also pitched in. The committee is not only still alive, but Jalen Hurts ran in all three offensive touchdowns.

RB Dontrell Hilliard (TEN)  –  The team that once had the biggest workhorse in the NFL now uses three different running backs and  changes their rotation each week. Adrian Peterson (9-40) took the top spot, and D’Onta Foreman (7-25) flopped just when you thought you scraped a starting running back from the waiver wire. And now Dontrell Hilliard (7-35) had his first action with the Titans after three very quiet seasons between the Browns and Texans. He added a team-high eight catches for 47 yards. He was a practice-squad call-up that replaced Jeremy McNichols who had a concussion.  Hilliard should see another chance to play based on his success, but this is a committee that may not be afforded a lot of touches in future games.

RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (KC) – He landed on injured reserve with a nasty knee injury in Week 5. Edwards-Helaire came back for the win over the Cowboys and looked none the worse. He ran for 63 yards on 12 carries with one touchdown and caught two short passes. Damien Williams was ineffective on his five rushes for 15 yards.

Huddle player of the week

RB Jonathan Taylor (IND)  –   Set a franchise record with five touchdowns against the No. 1 defense in points allowed and the No. 1 defense against fantasy running backs (that rank will drop).  He was even on the road. Taylor took over the game with 32 carries for 185 yards and four touchdowns, plus caught three passes for 19 yards and the fifth score. He scored 53.4 fantasy points. In the Huddle Expert League with 12 teams, I just lost with the second highest score, 169.10 – 156.86 thanks to playing against him. Plenty of  leagues probably had a guy like me. Ouch.

Salute!

Chasing Ambulances

QB Baker Mayfield (CLE)  – Suffered a bruised right knee and did not return in the loss to the Patriots. Mayfield was already playing through injuries and said after the game that he wasn’t sure he could play this week against the Lions.  Case Keenum will take the attractive start if Mayfield isn’t able to play.

RB Aaron Jones (GB) – Went down in the third quarter of the win over the Seahawks holding his right knee. He did not return to the game and is believed to have sprained his MCL. He had to be helped from the field, and there is concern that it may force him to miss games. An MRI will confirm the situation on Monday. If Jones misses time, AJ Dillon would be in line for an  increase in workload against the Vikings this week, and the Rams the following matchup if it were to be more than one week.

Patrick Taylor is the only other running back currently on the active roster, but he’s an undrafted ex-Memphis back who was on the practice squad until two weeks ago. His two rushes for seven yards on Sunday were his first in the NFL. Dillon is the only back sure to see an increase in work if Jones remains out.

WR CeeDee Lamb (DAL) – He’s been nursing a sore ankle but blew up for two scores against the Falcons. He also suffered an arm contusion that had him leave the game. He’s thought to have been injured in the first half and just played through it. He said that it felt like it was “a charlie horse in my arm.” It doesn’t sound like anything serious.

TE Ricky Seals-Jones (WAS) – Injured his hip and was helped from the field by the trainers, Logan Thomas hasn’t been activated from injured reserve yet, but he’s expected to return soon. The only other options are John Bates and Sammie Reyes but neither would carry any fantasy value if Thomas remains out and Seals-Jones cannot play.

TE Dallas Goedert (PHI) – Took a shot to the head and will be tested for a concussion. If he misses any time, the only other tight ends on the roster are Jack Stoll and Tyree Jackson, and neither would project as fantasy relevant even if Goedert misses any time.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

WR Rashod Bateman (BAL) –  The rookie played in just four games this year, but he’s improved each week and led the Ravens with six receptions for 80 yards in their loss to the Dolphins.

QB Matt Ryan (ATL) – after throwing for two scores and around 300 yards for the last six games, he only completed 9-of-21 for 117 yards with two interceptions in the loss to the Cowboys.

WR Michael Gallup (DAL) – Spent the last eight weeks on injured reserve but returned in the in over the Falcons. He caught three passes for 42 yards and his five targets were second only to the six passes thrown to CeeDee Lamb and Tony Pollard.

RB James Robinson (JAC) – Returned after injuring his heel in Week 8. He started slowly but finished with 12 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown, plus caught four passes for 27 yards. His heel appeared to be no issue.

RB Rhamondre Stevenson (NE) – The Player-of-the-week below not only ran for 100 yards and two scores on 20 carries and caught four passes for 14 yards but he was pulled midway in the fourth quarter or it would have been more. Damien Harris was out with a concussion, but Stevenson is buying a bigger role ongoing even when Harris returns as the starter.

WR Kendrick Bourne (NE) – All of his best efforts have been in home games, which continued against the visiting Browns. Bourne ended with four receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown, plus gained 43 yards on three rushes. His two previous games were on the road and he never gained more than 35 yards in either game.

TE Hunter Henry (NE) – After scoring in five of the previous six games, Henry scored twice in the win over the Browns. His yardage is typically low, but he scored seven times over the last seven games.

RB Matt Breida (BUF) – Both Devin Singletary (7-43, TD) and Zack Moss (7-27, TD) had more carries than Breida, but this was the first time that we’ve seen him since Week 1 and Breida ran for 28 yards and a touchdown on three carries, plus caught three passes for 22 yards and a second score. There was only one other pass thrown to a running back. And this takes a more interesting slant with head coach Sean McDermott’s recent statement that he wanted to get more from his backfield after Week 9 saw Singletary (6-16) and Moss (3-6) were ineffective against the Steelers. Notable too is that all three backs faced the Jets and their No. 32 ranked defense against running backs.

RB Godwin Igwebuike (DET) – The Lions battled to a tie, kind of a win since they were 0-8. And they did that at the Steelers by running the ball 39 times versus just 25 passes. D’Andre Swift (33-130) was the workhorse, and Jamaal Williams was out with a thigh injury that may continue into Week 11, given that he never practiced. Jermar Jefferson ran for 41 yards on three carries and scored but was carted off after injuring his ankle while crossing the goal line.  Godwin Igwebuike is an ex-safety converted to running back  and debuted with three runs for 18 yards and three catches for 40 yards in Week 8. He again filled in this week and ran for 56 yards on two carries that included an impressive 42-yard touchdown run. Jefferson appeared to have a serious injury. If he and Williams remain out this week, Igwebuike would be the direct backup for Swift in Cleveland this week.

RB Mark Ingram (NO) – Had the start since Alvin Kamara was out. Ingram ran for 47 yards and a score on 14 rushes and added four catches for 61 yards. He tied with Tre’Quan Smith for a team-high seven targets. He did a credible job filling in.

RB D’Onta Foreman (TEN) – While fantasy waiver wires were busy fighting over Adrian Peterson, it’s been Foreman who was the busier of the two. Peterson ran for 21 yards on eight carries and lost a yard on his one catch. Foreman ran 11 times for 30 yards and gained 48 yards on his two catches in the win over the Saints.

QB Cam Newton (CAR) – He just signed  with the Panthers in the middle of last week and was surprisingly active on Sunday. P.J. Walker started and threw for 167 yards on his 22-of-29 day with one interception. But Newton trotted on to throw three passes and connected with Robbie Anderson for a 2-yard touchdown. Newton also ran the ball three times for 14 yards and a touchdown, looking very much like it was old times again when he faked the handoff to the left  and ran to the right for the score. The expectation is that Newton resumes as the starter as of this week when they host Washington.

TE Gerald Everett (SEA) – He led the Seahawks in receiving in the loss at the Packers when he caught eight passes for 63 yards for a season-high. Everett hasn’t scored since the season opener, but his four road games in the seven that he’s played have all been more productive than when at home. Things go worse away from Seattle, and Everett is more  frequently used.

Huddle player of the week

RB Rhamondre Stevenson (NE)  –  The rookie is one of the most exciting players in the NFL, but only in a sense you can never quite be sure if he’ll even be active, let alone be allowed a lot of touches. And there’s that every-play tension knowing that if he fumbles, no one sees him again for a few weeks. Stevenson became the top fantasy running back this week when Damien Harris was out with a concussion. The rookie rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries, caught four passes for 14 yards and scored two touchdowns. And he didn’t even play in the latter half of the fourth quarter.

Chasing Ambulances

RB Rhamondre Stevenson (NE)
RB Damien Harris (NE)
– Both New England backs  suffered head injuries which entailed laying on the ground for a bit (not on the same play). The Patriots are rarely forthcoming about injuries but both could end up in the concussion protocol. If either back is out for Week 10 against the Browns, Brandon Bolden becomes much more than the third-down back.

RB Zack Moss (BUF) – Left in the third quarter of the loss to the Jaguars, Moss is believed to have been concussed. That makes Devin Singletary the clear primary back if Moss it out. While the Bills are not a run-heavy offense, they face the Jets and their terrible run defense this week.

RB Devontae Booker (NYG) – Was knocked out of the win over the Raiders with a hip injury but was X-rayed  and said he was fine and wanted to return to the game.  The Giants are on bye this week and by Week 11, assumedly Saquon Barkley is back anyway.

RB Chase Edmonds (ARI) –  The Cardinals back only lasted for one play when he injured his ankle and left the win over the 49ers. In his absence, James Conner turned in a career day with 173 total yards and three touchdowns. Eno Benjamin used nine carries to gain 39 yards and a score during the mop-up portion of the game. Benjamin would be a bit player next week if Edmonds remains out, but Conner would again shoulder a large workload.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

RB Christian McCaffrey (CAR)  – Was reported to be on a pitch count in his first game since Week 3, but he was just as busy as before. McCaffrey was the leading rusher (14-52) and the leading receiver (4-54). Chuba Hubbard was left with only three carries for three yards and one catch. Until he is hurt again, Christian “The Franchise” McCaffrey is back in business.

WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (CLE) – The Browns had little need to pass, but DPJ made the most of his two catches. He scored a 60-yard touchdown in the second quarter and added a 26-yard catch later in the game. He’s the favorite to replace Odell Beckham and already led the Cleveland receivers in his first start.

RB Javonte Williams (DEN) – After his first seven games rarely topped 50 rushing yards, the rookie turned in his first 100-yard effort when the Broncos beat the Cowboys in Dallas. Williams ran for 111 yards on 17 carries but failed to catch any passes for the first time as well.  Melvin Gordon still took the rushing touchdown on his 21 runs for 80 yards, but Williams is at least setting the stage for 2022 if the Broncos elect to let Gordon leave in free agency.

QB Matt Ryan (ATL) – With Calvin Ridley gone for an indeterminate amount of time, Ryan was held to a season-worst 146 passing yards and one score with two interceptions in Week 8 against the Panthers. Just when it seemed he’d taken a downward turn, Ryan turned in one of his best games of the year. He passed for 343 yards and two scores in the win over the Saints and even rushed in a touchdown. Cordarrelle Patterson (6-126) was his top receiver but both Russell Gage (7-64) and Kyle Pitts (3-62) helped out.

TE Darren Waller (LV) – The Raiders’ star tight end was stuck at 50-yard efforts this year and only scored once since Week 1. In the first game without Henry Ruggs, Waller returned as the primary receiver with seven catches for 92 yards. This week against the Chiefs should be an even more bountiful matchup.

RB Jordan Howard (PHI) – Two games since Miles Sanders left and Howard’s scored in each matchup. He ran 17 times for 71 yards and the touchdown in the Week 9 loss to the Chargers one week after rushing 12 times for 57 yards and two scores in the win over the Lions. Boston Scott (10-40) remains involved, but Howard is productive as the new lead back.

WR DeVonta Smith (PHI) – So much didn’t make sense this week. The Eagles’ rookie wideout hadn’t scored since the season opener and only managed one catch for 15 yards in Week 8 at the Lions. He faced the No. 2 defense against wideouts on Sunday against the Chargers. Naturally, he logged his best game of the year with five catches for 116 yards and a touchdown.

QB Jordan Love (GB) – The first start for the rookie could have gone better.  Facing the No. 28 defense against quarterbacks, Love was held to 190 yards and one score with one interception. He threw 14 passes at Davante Adams but only completed six for 42 yards. A score in the final five minutes salvaged his day.

QB Patrick Mahomes (KC) – At home against the No. 24 defense, Mahomes passed for 166 yards and one score. I’m just  going to leave that right there and walk away.

WR Brandon Aiyuk (SF) – The former first-round pick was a star as a rookie but then flopped this year while Deebo Samuel sponged up nearly every pass. He caught four passes for 45 yards in Chicago in Week 8 as a season-best. And he had a meeting with Kyle Shanahan where “words were exchanged,” and Aiyuk came away with a new dedication to practice. That translated into Week 9 where he again turned in a season-high six catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

TE George Kittle (SF) – Returned after spending four weeks on injured reserve and posted six catches for 101 yards and a score in his first game back. He led the 49ers’ receivers but the game was almost entirely passing since the 49ers trailed throughout the loss to the Cardinals.

RB Jeff Wilson (SF) – He was active for the first time this year but did not have a carry. But realize, the next time you start Elijah Mitchell and really need him, Wilson will probably pick that week to get some work.

Titans backfield – The first game without Derrick Henry and the Titans opted for a three-man committee. D’Onta Foreman (5-29), Jeremy McNichols (7-24), and Adrian Peterson (10-21, TD) all shared in the workload and McNichols added three catches for 11 yards. Both Foreman and Peterson are new to the team, so the distribution is likely to shift. But, there is no free agent equivalent to Derrick Henry waiting to be picked up by a team. The No. 2 defense against running backs of the Saints is up next.

QB Josh Johnson (NYJ) – 1.02 pick of Zach Wilson hasn’t thrown for more than two scores or over 300 yards in any game as a rookie. He’s been replaced for the last two games by Mike White (405 pass yards, 3 TD) and once White was hurt in Week 9, Josh Johnson (317 pass yards, 3 TD) also played better than the rookie has. Maybe Wilson should get some seasoning on the bench for the rest of the year because  his backups are turning in Top-10 performances each week.

WR Elijah Moore (NYJ) – Playing with Zach Wilson meant that the rookie wideout topped out at four catches for 47 yards and only totaled nine receptions on the year. With Mike White in Week 8, Moore caught six passes for 67 yards. With Josh Johnson in Week 9, he caught seven passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson has to go through his learning curve, but Moore’s production has spiked without him.

Huddle player of the week

RB James Conner (ARI) –  The Cardinals backfield committee lost Chase Edmonds on the first play of the game and Conner never looked back. He rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, plus caught five passes for 77 yards and a third score. He already logged three games with two touchdowns, and now has his first three-score game.
