IMSA, in partnership with iRacing, Michelin, and the Virtual Competition Organization is set to host the IMSA eSports Global Championship for the second consecutive year. This year’s four-race season will run from November 5 to December 16 and visit four of IMSA’s most iconic tracks: Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen International, Sebring International Raceway, and Daytona International Speedway.

The IMSA eSports Global Championship will mirror the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in format with two hour and forty-minute races featuring all four IMSA GTP manufacturers and a full slate of GT3 machines.

“In its debut season the IMSA Esports Global Championship proved to be a success, with upwards of 180,000 viewers for the four-race championship,” IMSA President John Doonan said.

“IMSA and the sport of sim racing have experienced remarkable growth in the past couple of seasons and we look forward to full fields and fierce competition in the 2023 IMSA Esports Global Championship. We are particularly excited by the fact that many of the world’s leading marques will again be participating in the series, giving sim racers and teams a unique opportunity to work closely with those world-class racing programs.”

Among the teams that will compete are Max Verstappen’s Team Redline, Porsche’s factory-supported eSports team Coanda, Williams eSports, and BMW’s official eSports team, BS+ Competition.

The announcement further solidifies the relationship between IMSA, which is owned by NASCAR, and iRacing. iRacing gaining access to and building all four of the new GTP machines in their debut year was a major milestone for the simulation company.

“iRacing and IMSA have enjoyed a productive relationship for more than a decade,” said Tony Gardner, president of iRacing. “Our partnership with IMSA enables more than 230,000 iRacers around the world to race virtual versions of the world’s fastest sports cars on the great North American road courses featured in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.

“The IMSA Esports Global Championship continues our great partnership with IMSA as well as with many of the world’s leading makers of high-performance sports cars.”

In a significant development to NASCAR’s video game product, iRacing has acquired the license to produce NASCAR console games from Motorsport Games. The transfer of the license brings control of NASCAR’s console game properties under the ceiling of iRacing, which has controlled the series’ PC gaming property for over a decade.

Motorsport Games had failed to produce a NASCAR console video game since October of 2021. Content from the 2022 season, including the Next Gen cars, was released as an add-on to NASCAR 21: Ignition, the most recent NASCAR console video game.

“When we were approached with the option to acquire the license for the simulation-style NASCAR console game, which was the console game and franchise that we were dreaming about doing, it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” said iRacing President Tony Gardner.

“Having the ability to build a NASCAR console game is a privilege we promise to execute with the utmost care. We look forward to working diligently with NASCAR industry stakeholders to deliver a product that provides an amazing experience for the gaming community and NASCAR fans worldwide.”

iRacing has steadily been growing as one of NASCAR’s more significant partners, and the game developers’ continued stewardship of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series makes its acquisition of the license one of the best outcomes NASCAR could have asked for.

“iRacing has been an incredible partner and ambassador for the NASCAR industry for more than a decade,” Nick Rend, Managing Director of Esports and Gaming at NASCAR said. “We thank Motorsport Games for its efforts over the years and are ready to work with iRacing to deliver a best-in-class simulation-style NASCAR console game that’s exciting for the gaming community and allows our fans to connect with the sport in an impactful, meaningful way.”

Motorsport Games still controls the license for video games based on the NTT IndyCar Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Wilson wins eNASCAR crown

Steven Wilson emerged from the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series Championship Four to claim his first eNASCAR title, the $100,000 grand prize, and the Dale Earnhardt Jr. trophy.

With a large contingency of family members who drove from Iowa City, Iowa, in attendance to cheer him on for the final, held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C., Wilson of Stewart-Haas eSports dominated the final race of the season, run on the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Alongside Wilson on stage at the NASCAR Hall of Fame were fellow Championship Four contenders Tucker Minter, Nick Ottinger, and Garrett Lowe. Rather fittingly for Wilson, the only driver of the four to not clinch a spot in Charlotte by virtue of a victory, claimed the title without doing so either.

After starting on the outside of row one, Wilson spent much of the race following in the wheel tracks of his backend teammate and good friend, Donovan Strauss. Wilson’s nearest competition at the drop of the green flag was Minter who started in 15th, giving Wilson a comfortable cushion to begin the 100-lap race. Strauss led all 100 laps en route to victory but the focus of the evening was on the Championship Four.

Contrary to the trend of the season, the finale from Homestead-Miami was interrupted by just two caution flags that arose in quick succession near the race’s midway point. The latter yellow set up a 45-lap green flag run that would take the field of drivers to the season’s conclusion.

With Lowe and Ottinger mired deeper in the pack after starting 24th and 31st respectively, they rarely featured in the conversation as Minter and Wilson became the focus of the night. Minter rose to as high as third in the final run, with the bumper of Wilson placed squarely in his sights. The pace of Wilson proved to be too much of a hill to climb for Minter who, having used his tires in pursuit, began to drop back with inside 20 laps to run.

This time, the late caution flag never arrived and Wilson, behind Strauss, cruised to a second-place finish that netted him the title.

“It sounds unbelievable — I can’t believe I’m in this situation,” Wilson said. “I’ve got to thank everyone at Stewart-Haas, everybody at Smithfield, and everyone here to support me. All the family and friends who came out, they’re unbelievable. I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them so just thank you so much.”

The first people on stage to congratulate Wilson were his mother and father, along with his extended family. All wearing matching t-shirts, they sat anxiously in the front row as the laps began to wind down. They, and Wilson, had been in that spot a year prior when Wilson came up short of Casey Kirwan in the inaugural edition of a live Championship Four at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

“You got to have lows to have highs, it’s just happy to have this one,” Wilson said.

Wilson’s coronation marks the fifth straight eNASCAR season with a new champion. Only Ottinger, the 2020 titlist, was in a position to break that streak but he ended the race in 13th. Minter was looking to become the first rookie, besides Richard Towler in the inaugural season of 2010, to win the title but he finished in seventh. A Hail Mary strategy call from Lowe, who had little to lose, netted him a 35th-place result.

Off the back of strong performances from its rookie pairing, Team Dillon eSports claimed the team’s championship with the work of Minter and Jordy Lopez Jr. Both drivers finished the season in the top five.

The bottom 20 drivers in the points standings will have to re-earn their spot in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. Zack Novak, the 2019 champion, was the biggest name to miss the cut-off, setting up a stressful off-season. The series’ 2021 champion Keegan Leahy narrowly avoided relegation with his finish of 20th.

The eNASCAR Road to Pro Contender Series, where the top 20 drivers will earn a spot in next year’s eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series, begins later this fall.

TITANS +3.5 (-120) at Browns – 1 p.m. (CBS)

The Browns lost RB Nick Chubb for the season and QB Deshaun Watson has not looked good thus far this season.

The Titans have played 2 close games, losing by 1 point and winning by 3. They have allowed an average of only 65 rushing yards per game. The Browns have averaged 202 yards rushing a game but without Chubb and facing a tough rushing defense, it will be hard to do much offensively.

With both teams relying on the run game and their defenses, expect this to be slow, low-scoring and close.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Eagles at BUCCANEERS +4.5 (-105) – Monday 7:15 p.m. (ABC)

The Bucs are a surprising 2-0 and are allowing only 54.0 rushing yards per game. Plus, Bucs QB Baker Mayfield has not thrown an interception yet.

The Eagles have relied on the run game (178.0 yards per game) as QB Jalen Hurts has not been as good in the pass game. The Eagles have allowed 24.0 points per game through 2 weeks.

Tampa’s defense should keep this game close.

RAMS (+125) at Bengals – Monday, 8:15 p.m. (ESPN)

QB Joe Burrow has not been good. He is averaging only 4.2 yards per passing attempt, having arguably the best trio of receivers in the league. He is also not 100%, dealing with a calf injury.

The Rams have been better than expected through 2 games. Even without WR Cooper Kupp, QB Matthew Stafford has over 300 passing yards in each game. Rookie WR Puka Nacua has 24 receptions for 266 yards in 2 games.

The Rams are No. 2 in the league in total offense. The Bengals are last.

eNASCAR’s Minter’s wild rise to championship contention

The Championship Four who will fight for $100,000 and the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series championship at the NASCAR Hall of Fame are set. The group features a former champion, a veteran back in the championship four with another shot at the crown, and a pair of drivers, including a rookie, making their championship four debut.

Garrett Lowe, Nick Ottinger, Steven Wilson, and Tucker Minter will be alongside each other in two weeks at the NASCAR Hall of Fame to decide who will take home the 2023 title. Wilson, despite claiming his car was killed after being involved in a wreck, recovered to clinch his spot in the championship four via points over the three rounds of the playoffs while Lowe, Ottinger, and Minter secured their spot by winning one of the playoff races.

While any victory in the ultra-competitive eNASCAR series requires some good fortune, most pale in comparison to the swing of luck, and emotions, that came with Minter’s win from the virtual Phoenix Raceway.

Minter had passed and pulled away from reigning champion Casey Kirwan with under 20 laps left to run. The only thing that could stop Minter from securing the win, and the coveted spot in the championship four that came with it, was a caution. That’s what he got.

Minter was now faced with the difficult question of whether to pit for fresh tires and risk the majority of the field staying out, or stay out himself and hope enough cars followed his lead to build a big enough buffer between himself and those on new tires.

He opted to stay out but watched in dismay as Casey Kirwan led the majority of the race’s 38 other drivers down pit road. Just two others chose to stay out with Minter. His cushion to those on new tires was non-existent, Kirwan would start on the row behind him.

Minter punched his desk in frustration, “I can’t believe this has happened to me,” he said. “I’ve done everything right all race, I qualified well, I drove back to the lead after getting shuffled back, and now it’s all falling apart because of a late race caution.”

The one thing that could save him now was the one thing that ruined him just moments before. After wishing against a caution for a dozen laps, Minter soon found himself desperately needing plenty over the course of the next dozen.

First, Minter needed a quick caution to send the race to overtime, and he got it. Then, he needed a quick caution to get to the second overtime – and he got it. He needed a quick caution to get to the third overtime; he got it. Finally, he needed a fourth quick caution to end the race before reaching the white flag. He got it.

On multiple restarts, the caution flew just feet before the field made it the white flag with Minter narrowly ahead of Kirwan and Bobby Zalenski. With all three of them in need of a win to make the championship four, the margins could not have been any closer. Each time the yellow appeared, it was Minter who had his nose ahead of the rest.

The astonishing change of fortune for Minter will allow him to fight for $100,000 at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the same venue where a year ago he watched in the crowd, as a fan. He looked on awe as Dale Earnhardt Jr., his childhood hero, mingled with the drivers and presented the trophy to Casey Kirwan, the driver he had just now beaten to secure his spot in Charlotte.

Minter’s journey from fan to potential champion has been remarkable, with his goals rising ever higher as he eclipsed milestone after milestone. As a rookie in the series, he entered the season just hoping to avoid relegation. That goal was squashed with two wins on the season, including the first race of his eNASCAR career in the season-opener from Daytona.

Now in the playoffs, the rookie was up against a stacked field of veterans like Michael Conti, former champions such as Kirwan and Nick Ottinger, and even a fellow rookie, Jordy Lopez, who had shown just as much promise. A 24th-place finish in the opening race of the playoffs at Michigan was partially offset by a fifth place two weeks later at Dover, but Minter was still on the outside looking in.

Whether the 22-year-old from Virginia would again be able to ratchet up his expectations was going to come down to the penultimate race of the season. Needing a win, he got it.

Aside from preparing for the biggest race of his life, he’ll have to reschedule the first exams of his college semester. They’re currently slated for the day before the finale, a date Minter is unlikely to be available for.

He wanted to avoid relegation, and he did. He wanted to make the playoffs, and he did. He wanted to make the Championship Four, and he did. Now with a title on the line, it’s time to raise the expectations again.

The NTT IndyCar Series continues to practice patience with Motorsport Games, its chosen partner for a new video game for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC platforms that was announced in July of 2021. An update provided by the series in March spoke to the myriad problems being experienced by the game developer and the unsure future of the game’s release.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1408]

In a new update offered by Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles, the owners of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway remain hopeful the company will deliver a product for its fans while being prepared to react if it does not reach the finish line.

“It’s still not clear how it will end,” Miles told RACER. “I think a lot of really good work has been done with the current partner, Motorsports Games. They’ve put a lot into it. We’ve seen evidence of how it looks. It’s amazing.

Motorsport Games has faced some well-publicised difficulties. Motorsport Images

“But they are struggling to have the resources to finish the job. So they’re working on other ways that other partnerships could be established to help them get it done. Whether that will play out successfully or not remains to be seen.”

Miles says the same timeline for knowing whether the game will proceed is unchanged.

“I think it’ll be clear by the end of the year,” he added. “One of the reasons they desperately want to finish it is they think that it is essentially a breakthrough technology in the market and will have relevance in other sports.”
