Titleist GT2, GT3 fairway woods

The Titleist GT2 fairway woods are for golfers who want more distance and a high level of stability and forgiveness. The GT3 fairway woods are for players who want left-right adjustability, lower spin rates and a lower ball flight.

Fairway woods are among the most challenging clubs to make because they need to be versatile, easy to hit and send the ball the same distance whether a player is hitting off a tee or from the turf. For that reason, when players find a fairway wood they like, they tend to stick with it.

However, by applying the critical new feature it developed for the new GT drivers to the GT fairway woods, Titleist feels it has unlocked new levels of overall performance, blending more distance with an improved ball flight and more consistency.

Who are the Titleist GT fairway woods for?

The Titleist GT2 fairway woods are for golfers who want more distance and a high level of stability and forgiveness. The GT3 fairway woods are for players who want left-right adjustability, lower spin rates and a lower ball flight.

What should you know about the Titleist GT fairway woods?

While several other manufacturers have released fairway woods that have carbon fiber crowns, Titleist has struck with stainless steel and worked to make it thinner and stronger. Now, however, with the GT fairway woods, Titleist is adding a seamless thermoform crown piece to both the GT2 and the GT3, made using the company’s proprietary matrix polymer.

Titleist GT fairway woods
The top of the GT2 is designed with a seamless thermoform matric polymer crown piece to reduce weight. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

The polymer weighs significantly less than the stainless steel it replaces on the top of both clubs, lowering the center of gravity (CG) location and creating discretionary weight that designers could reposition to other areas.

There is no visible seam, and in the address position, the GT2 and GT3 feature a glossy black top that looks like many previously released Titleist fairway woods.

To improve performance on low-struck shots, both Titleist GT fairway woods have a forged 465 stainless steel face in an L shape, which wraps under the leading edge and into the sole. On thin shots, this allows the hitting area to flex more efficiently.

Both the GT2 and the GT3 come with Titleist’s 16-position SureFit hosel mechanism. The two cogs in the system move independently, so players and fitters can adjust the lie angle, the loft or both to ensure a good fit and distance gapping.

Titleist GT3 fairway woods
The lower portion of the hitting area in the GT3 has been a redesigned to create a deeper, squared-off look. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Titleist has also redesigned the lower portion of the hitting area, flattening it to create a more confidence-inspiring look. At the same time, the GT2 has a lower profile than the GT3, which has a taller, deeper face that lower-handicap players often prefer.

Titleist designers aspired to make the GT2 launch higher but spin less than the TSR2 fairway woods because that should equate to more carry distance. So, using some of the weight saved by going with the polymer crown, designers repositioned more weight forward in the head, which shifted the CG more forward, resulting in higher ball speeds and lower spin rates. The sole weight behind the leading edge comes standard at 9 grams, but other weights are available to custom fitters so they can fine-tune the spin rate and launch angle for players.

Titleist GT3 fairway woods
The GT3 has a five-position moveable weight in the front of the sole. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

While the GT2 is the larger of the two fairway woods and matches the GT2 driver in being a high-stability, high-forgiveness offering, the GT has a five-position adjustable weight track in the sole that allows players and fitters to give the club a draw or fade bias. The GT3 comes standard with a 12-gram weight in the track, but other weights are available to fitters.

What lofts are available in the Titleist GT fairway woods?

The Titlist GT2 fairway woods are available in 13.5, 15, 16.5, 18 and 21-degree versions, and the GT3 fairway woods are available in 15, 16.5 and 18-degree versions.

How much do the Titleist GT fairway woods cost?

The Titleist GT2 and GT3 fairway woods are $399 each with Project X Denali Red, Project X HZRDUS Black 5th Gen or Mitsubishi Tensei 1K Blue graphite shaft and Titleist Universal 360 grip.

When will the Titleist GT fairway woods be in stores?

Titleist GT2 and GT3 fairway woods are available for fitting and pre-sale now and will be in stores starting August 23.

TaylorMade P·770 irons (2024)

The P·770 is a better-player’s distance iron.

TaylorMade’s first P·770 was released in 2017 alongside the P·750, and it was a better-player’s cavity-back iron, but in 2020, it was updated and radically changed. The cavity-back design was gone, and in its place, the 2020 P·770 featured a hollow-body construction that featured a look in the address position that accomplished golfers would appreciate.

That club was updated again in 2023, and now TaylorMade has updated it again for 2024. The new P·770 irons have the same script on the side and brushed chrome finish that the other P Series irons have been given, so from a visual standpoint, golfers and fitters can opt to use them as a complete set or blend the P·770 with P·790, P·7CB or even P·7MB irons to create a blended but cohesive set.

Who are the new TaylorMade P·770 irons for?

The P·770 is a better-player’s distance iron. It is for low-handicap golfers who want a compact head shape but who also desire more ball speed and some forgiveness.

[afflinkbutton text=”Shop new TM P•770 irons” link=”https://go.linkby.com/DKDWACGB”]

What should you know about the new TaylorMade P·770 irons?

In the address position, golfers may notice TaylorMade has designed the topline of the updated P·770 to be thinner, but looking at the clubs, they might not notice the leading edge of the 3-iron through 7-iron have been smoothed and pre-worn. The sole is still slightly wider than the P·7CB and P·7MB, but it is thinner than other TaylorMade irons. According to TaylorMade, the tight leading-edge radius and thin sole should help the P·770 get in and out of the turf more efficiently while also creating a higher launch angle with the long irons.

TaylorMade P·770 irons
The TaylorMade P·770 irons have a hollow chamber filled with SpeedFoam Air, along with an internal tungsten weight in the toe. (TaylorMade)

The P·770 irons have L-shaped faces that are forged using 4041 stainless steel. They are designed to wrap under the leading edge and into the sole, and the 3-iron through 7-iron have been designed with a Speed Pocket slot that is positioned directly behind the leading edge. The slot, which is covered by a polymer to keep water and debris out of the heads, allows the lower portion of the hitting area to flex more efficiently on low-struck shots for increased distance.

TaylorMade fills the inner chamber of the P·770 with SpeedFoam Air, a light material that soaks up excessive vibrations to enhance sound and feel. Making the center of the club lighter also pushes more overall weight to the perimeter, which boosts stability without making the clubs larger.

Designers also strategically positioned tungsten weights inside each head, with the precise location and amount of tungsten varying by club. This allows TaylorMade to lower and elevate the center of gravity (CG) location based on what the club is designed to do. TaylorMade refers to this as FLTD CG, with the long irons having the most tungsten and lowest CG, so they produce a higher launch angle. Progressing through the set, the CG location rises, so the short irons feature the highest CG locations, so shots come off lower for increased accuracy and control.

The P·770 lofts are typical for modern, better-player distance irons, with a 3-iron at 19 degrees, 6-iron at 29 degrees and 9-iron at 41 degrees. The P·770 pitching wedge has 45 degrees of loft, and there is an attack wedge available that has 50 degrees of loft.

[afflinkbutton text=”Shop new TM P•770 irons” link=”https://go.linkby.com/DKDWACGB”]

How does the TaylorMade P·770 compare to other TaylorMade irons?

The TaylorMade P·770 is very similar in construction and appearance to the P·790, but the P·770 is smaller and has a shorter blade length and slightly thinner topline.

TaylorMade P·770 irons
The TaylorMade P·770 irons have a more-compact look than the P·790, but are more forgiving than the new P·7CB. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

The P·770 is slightly larger than the new P·7CB, but the P·7CB is a solid-bodied club while the P·770 is hollow. Therefore, the P·770 should create more ball speed and distance, and its slightly larger size should make it more forgiving and stable on mis-hits. The P·770 will also hit the ball higher and with less spin than the P·7CB.

How much do the new TaylorMade P·770 irons cost?

The TaylorMade P·770 irons cost $1,399.99 (seven clubs) and come standard with True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115 steel shafts and Golf Pride Z grips.

When will the new TaylorMade P·770 be in stores?

The TaylorMade P·770 irons will be available for pre-sale on July 31 and should be in stores starting on September 6.

TaylorMade P·7CB irons (2024)

The TaylorMade P·7CB irons are designed for consistent ballstrikers.

While clubs like the TaylorMade Qi irons and Stealth irons offered mid- and higher-handicap players more distance and forgiveness, within the TaylorMade stable, P Series irons have always been for more-accomplished golfers, players who want enhanced control and more feel. The P·7MB is a modern muscleback blade and the P·7MC is a solid muscle-cavity, while the P·770 and P·790 are hollow-bodied clubs designed as better-player distance offerings.

Starting about two years ago, TaylorMade began hearing from players who wanted something between the P·7MC and the P·770. Now, after both Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa tested and started using prototypes of the TaylorMade P·7CB, the Carlsbad, California-based equipment maker is releasing it to everyone.

Who are the TaylorMade P·7CB irons for?

The TaylorMade P·7CB irons are designed for consistent ballstrikers and elite golfers who want a touch of forgiveness to go along with a compact, control-oriented iron.

What you should know about the P·7CB irons

Each of P·7CB head is forged using 1025 carbon steel, but TaylorMade mills two pockets into the sole of the heads. A longer pocket extends from the heel through the middle of the sole, and it is filled with a metal matrix composite (MMC) material that is one-seventh the weight of stainless steel. A small pocket near the toe is filled with up to 11 grams of tungsten.

TaylorMade P·7CB irons
The P·7CB irons have a light metal matrix composite piece and a tungsten toe weight hidden under a steel sole plate. (TaylorMade)

By removing the 1025 carbon steel and replacing it with a lighter metal, then concentrating extra weight in the toe, TaylorMade designers can counteract the weight of the hosel, pull the ideal hitting area into the center of the face and in the long irons, lower the center of gravity (CG) location.

You can not see either of the pockets because TaylorMade adds a co-forged steel sole plate over both areas before the whole head is re-forged.

TaylorMade P·7CB 2024
The TaylorMade P·7CB has a machined face area and grooves. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

TaylorMade has machined the hitting area and grooves in the P·7CB irons to ensure the face is perfectly flat. Good players will be able to generate the spin needed to hit draws, cut shots and work the ball up and down as needed.

Visually, the TaylorMade P·7CB, with an anti-glare Tour Satin finish, fits in with the other P Series irons. The topline is slightly thicker than the topline of the P·7MC, and the blade length is slightly longer, too, but in the address position, it would take a very sharp eye to notice those things. The P·7CB has marginally less offset than the P·7MC.

TaylorMade P·7CB 2024
The TaylorMade P·7CB for 2024 has a thin sole, minimal offset and a thin topline. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Turf interaction is critical for good iron players, and with a sole that is slightly wider than the bottom of the P·7MC, the P·7CB should work in and out of the ground quickly and easily for low-handicap golfers.

As you would expect, the lofts of the P·7CB irons are traditional, with a 3-iron at 20 degrees, 6-iron at 29 degrees and the pitching wedge at 46 degrees of loft. An attack wedge is also available at 51 degrees, so players and fitters should be able to use the P·7CB with other TaylorMade irons to create a blended set.

How much do the TaylorMade P·7CB irons cost?

The TaylorMade P·7CB irons cost $1,399.99 (seven clubs) and come standard with True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115 steel shafts and Golf Price Z grips.

When will the TaylorMade P·7CB irons become available?

The TaylorMade P·7CB irons will be available for pre-order starting July 31 and should be in stores starting September 6.

Tour Edge names Tim Clarke new president

“To say we are excited about Tim joining our team would be an understatement.”

Tour Edge has announced that effective August 5, Tim Clarke, the former president of Wilson Golf, will become the brand’s new president, overseeing worldwide golf sales, strategic planning and operational performance for Tour Edge.

Dave Glod is the founder, chief club designer and majority owner of Tour Edge. He is giving up his position as president and taking on the role as chief executive officer.

In a statement, Glod said, “To say we are excited about Tim joining our team would be an understatement. We’re getting one of golf’s most respected and well-liked leaders and putting all his talents and focus into our sales and marketing efforts. This is a total coup for us to get Tim and it should have a huge impact for us moving forward.”

If Clarke’s face looks familiar, you might recognize him from the Golf Channel series, “Driver vs. Driver, which aired in 2016 and 2018.

Clarke started at Chicago-based Wilson in 1997, and after leaving in February 2023, he became the executive vice president of the golf division of Perry Ellis International. He managed the Original Penguin, Callaway (apparel), PGA TOUR, Nicklaus and Perry Ellis brands in the United States.

Clarke said, “I couldn’t be more excited to be joining the Tour Edge family and getting back to my roots in hard good sales and in the Chicagoland area.”

Tour Edge, which is based in Batavia, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago, has positioned itself as a brand that tries to bring technology and value to golfers. It has found success in sponsoring Champions tour players like Bernhard Langer, Scott McCarron and Alex Cejka, and recently its television ads have featured former football and baseball star Bo Jackson.

Adidas Code Chaos 25 golf shoes

You can expect to start seeing Adidas Code Chaos 25 on store shelves beginning August 1.

For golfers who want high-performance, traditional-looking golf shoes, Adidas has offered the Tour360 for years. It has been updated numerous times to add more cushioning, stability, traction and comfort, but it still looks like a traditional golf shoe.

In 2020, Adidas debuted something different for golfers who want a sportier, fresh look without sacrificing performance: the original Code Chaos. Made using multi-layer mesh, the shoe was breathable, light and waterproof.

Code Chaos has been updated, and special versions have dropped, but Adidas is now set to release Code Chaos 25.

Who is the Adidas Code Chaos 25 golf shoe for?

Like previous generations, the new Code Chaos is designed for people who want a golf shoe that offers higher performance than casual spikeless golf shoes but is more youthful and versatile than a traditional spiked shoe.

What should I know about the Adidas Code Chaos 25 golf shoes?

The biggest goal for Adidas with the Code Chaos 25 was to increase traction and stability without sacrificing comfort.

While Code Chaos remains a spikeless shoe, Adidas achieved that by adding a piece to the outsole (the shoe’s bottom) that it refers to as a 3D Torsion Plate. This rigid area between the forefoot and heel areas reduces bending in the midfoot area and heel slipping as you swing.

In addition to the 3D Torsion Plate, Adidas updated the positioning and side of the TwistGrip lugs on the outsole so more of their surface area comes into contact with the ground. According to Adidas, they increase traction by up to 40 percent over the previous Code Chaos.

Adidas created a hybrid midsole piece by combining its Boost and Lightstrike materials so the Code Chaos can provide more cushioning and comfort as you walk the course. The top of the upper (top portion) of Code Chaos is made using a flexible, multi-layer knit material. It has a transparent polyurethane film that makes the shoes waterproof while also creating a see-through look at the mesh and upper.

There is a traditional lace-up version of Code Chaos 25 for both men and women, but Adidas is very excited about a BOA version. After putting your foot in the shoe, a zip-up piece covers the tongue to encase your foot fully. Then, by turning a small dial on the side of the shoe, golfers can gently tighten a wire system to achieve a personalized fit. The system is called BOA PerformFit Wrap, and it is meant to give players a ‘locked-in’ feel on the course.

When you are done playing, pulling the dial out instantly releases the wires and relaxes the shoes.

How much do Adidas Code Chaos 25 golf shoes cost?

The men’s laced version of Adidas Code Chaos 25 will cost $160, and the BOA version will cost $180. The laced women’s Code Chaos 25 will be $160 and the women’s BOA edition will cost $180.

When will the Adidas Code Chaos 25 golf shoes be available?

You can expect to start seeing Adidas Code Chaos 25 on store shelves beginning August 1.

You can now own an exact replica of the putter used by the Norwegian star who won the 2023 FedEx Cup.

Norway’s Viktor Hovland arrived on the PGA Tour in 2019 having won the 2018 U.S. Amateur, been a star at Oklahoma State and been the low amateur in both the 2019 Masters and U.S. Open. With Hovland, accuracy off the tee and high-quality iron play was never an issue. But in his first season on the PGA Tour, he finished 115th in Strokes Gained: Putting (-0.048), and that won’t do.

Fast forward to this season and Hovland ranks 43rd in Strokes Gained: Putting. He has won six PGA Tour events, including the 2023 FedEx Cup, been a member of a winning European Ryder Cup team and won nearly $30 million in prize money. One of the clubs that helped him achieve that success has been his Ping PDL Milled DS72 putter.

Ping is now making a replica of Hovland’s exact putter available to the public in the same specs Hovland plays. The limited-edition PLD Milled SE DS72 Hovland Edition mid-mallet putter is milled from 1018 carbon steel and has a copper-toned patina finish. It comes standard with a head weight of 360 grams and has a single line on the thin topline to help with aiming the face. As with Hovland’s putter, it has 3 degrees of loft and is 35 includes in length.

While many milled putters have faces that feature circular milling marks, the hitting area of the PLD Milled SE DS72 Hovland Edition putter is smooth and delivers a firmer feel at impact. With a double-bend shaft, the putter is face-balanced and ideally suited for players who make a straight-back-straight-through stroke.

The PLD Milled SE DS72 Hovland Edition putter is available at authorized Ping retailers for $485.

Best golf rain gear to get you through heavy stuff

Don’t let a little rain disrupt the best round of your life!

After an extremely windy first two days of the Open Championship, Scotland has added a new element to the equation.

No matter how much you enjoy watching the professionals battle the rain from your comfortable couch, being on the course is a different story.

Some people shrink away from a little rain, but we don’t think the heavy stuff is gonna come down for quite a while. If you’re reading this, you’re not one to call off a tee time just because there’s a small chance of rain or a litttle nip in the air.

Here at Golfweek, we’ll weather the weather whatever the weather, and keep you as dry as possible on the courseCheck out our list of best rain gear below and our list of best golf rain jackets as well.

FootJoy x Harris Tweed collaboration for the 2024 British Open

Check out the limited-edition FJ x Harris Tweed golf shoes made special for the 2024 Open Championship

The most iconic hole at Royal Troon is also its shortest, the eighth hole, which measures just 123 yards. Known as the Postage Stamp, the green is surrounded by five bunkers and plays downhill, and it has been frustrating golfers for over a century.

Using the Postage Stamp hole as inspiration, FootJoy has collaborated with Harris Tweed to create a limited-edition Premiere Field and Premiere Wilcox shoe to celebrate the season’s final men’s major.

This limited-edition collaboration has hand-woven tweed with a ‘basket weave’ pattern that is designed to resemble a postage stamp, and each pair of shoes comes with a special bag made from the same cloth as featured on the footwear.

And so we are clear, this is no ordinary wool or pattern that has been added to the shoes. The Harris Tweed Act states that the fabric must be handwoven in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, which are islands off the western coast, using truly traditional methods. Harris Tweed is designed to stand up to the elements in Scotland, which any golfer who has played links like Royal Troon, St. Andrews or Carnoustie will tell you, is usually no day at the beach.

Like the standard Field and Wilcox, the FJ x Harris Tweed Premiere Series shoes come with a two-year waterproof warranty and feature the VersaTrax+ outsole that combines nine replaceable cleats with scores of traction elements to keep a golfer’s foot firmly connected to the ground throughout the swing. For added cushioning and comfort, FootJoy designed the Field and Wilcox shoes with a OrthoLite EcoPlush Fit-Bed that molds to your foot while you wear the shoes but retains it shape when you take the shoes off.
